She certainly had unlimited potential. But the poor girl suffered badly from the disease of addiction. I sure hope she is resting comfortably. I still get chills when I listen to “Didn’t We Almost Have It All”. I’d like to hear Regina Belle sing it...she can soar the same way Houston did and she has worked with Walden also.

She had to do certain records and be packaged and marketed a certain way because they weren't really playing black artists in the _mainskream_ all like that. She did what she had to do in order for black artists to be accepted, worldwide. Some artists didn't mind being pigeonholed to one thing, but the majority of artists want they art to circulate throughout the world. But anyway, I like you, Narada Michael Walden. You gon be my new uncle. I like when she told you not to change the key. Singing the way she did was a cinch to her. She was naturally able to pitch her voice in them high keys. You don't hear that type of singing anymore w/ perfect pitch, clarity and enunciation. Now see, I had the biggest smile on my face until y'all mentioned Sam Smith. I don't care for him. His face and voice just annoys the hell outta me. He had no business tryna sing Auntie's song. No soul, flavor or passion. When I first saw that, my spirit saddened. I felt hella gloomy inside. While, I'm here, I'm also getting tired. I'm tired of him being played on all formats while Eric Benét has to sing abroad over in Korea. I'm tired. The singing/talent doesn't match or eclipse the mass exposure. If anybody in power reads my posts, please change this narrative. Eric Benét obviously looks, sounds and sings better than Sam Smith. Why doesn't the overall talent match or eclipse the mass exposure? If it's an *"age"* thing then what's the big deal? Sam Smith and Eric Benét are indeed the same age (51). Why would you say that Sam Smith and Eric Benet are the same age? Anyway, since you want to make it about color... why don't you ask black people why they aren't buying Eric Benet's records? Maybe it's because he doesn't beat his woman, or because he doesn't leak dick pics on social media. This is 2018. Artists aren't at the mercy of the Clive Davises, anymore. I guess that more Koreans are are fans of Eric Benet than Black Americans are. and BTW - throughout most of Whitney's career, it wasn't just other Black singers who were shading Whitney. Most of the Black audience was giving her a hard time, saying that her SINGING didn't have enough soul. I agree with that he is an amazing artist, writer and producer and I’ve met him once. But I frequently remember entertainers who make negative comments about their most successful and popular work.
Don't forget this is the guy who replaced Billy Cobham in Mahavishnu. That stat alone would be enough to retire on but he goes on to become a multi chart topping producer as well.

She was a far better singer than Mariah Carey. Her loss is an absolute tragedy. She was a superb talent with total control of her voice, and a lot more vocal complexity. Mariah just sounds like a squeaky toy.

first of all, I adore Narada...maybe the most 'spiritual" producer in the business...his approach to cutting records with some of the greatest divas and egos, is not something that can be taught...because he has to know the technical side of engineering a session, but he also has to adjust and handle these egos that are coming thru the door before the artist does. doing that. And he has a gift for doing that, much like Quincy Jones.
Uh, Whitney?...is the greatest POP vocalist Ive ever heard, male or female. And Im nowhere near her biggest fan. Yea, she could sing, gospel, could probably sing the blues or light opera..and if given a shot, she would've OWNED Broadway, where she could have shown off her chops on one of those great musicals. But when it came to interpreting a pop song, there was NO ONE better. She was better than Streisand, Dion, Carey, Franklin, LaBelle, Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Tina Turner and even her cousin Dionne, at conveying all the little nuances an artist needs, to win over the record buyer who favors pop, over anything else. And those are some great pop artists, I mention...but she was the best of all of them, hands down.
There is a live concert recording, on RUclips, of her singing in San Francisco (dont know where in SF)..this was before she REALLY blew up (1984, I think)..and so she didnt have a lot of her own material to work with. So, she was singing other songs from other singers, as well as a few songs of her own. Well, she did a version of Jennifer Holliday's "Im Changing" from "Dreamgirls", that completely took my breath away. My mouth dropped at the power (as Narada calls it) coming out of her face and all the breath control, she showed....it is really something to behold. And so effortless...it was like listening to someone who simply has to open her mouth..and her vocal chords, does the rest. You wont get another one, like her.
And this man will now play drums in Journey

Priceless interview. Never heard of this guy till today. But he hit the nail on the head on some many aspects of WH. The first thing you (I) noticed when I first heard her sing and saw what she looked like. That much power and volume, range...from a very slim woman. Almost skinny. Usually you get that kind of voice from larger women. Heavy. Yet she was able to project effortlessly. She never sounded like she was struggling to hit the notes she did and hold them. So sad we lost her...however it really happened.
The way she was found. Naked on the floor of her Beverly Hills Hotel bathroom. Don't recall any one saying she had a stroke or if it was a OD. Those "questionable" deaths of major stars. Just as odd as Bruce Lee's death.
Bruce Lee was cocky. Had to have told the wrong people off a few times. Was WH that way? Shrug.
As for no one sounding like WH...there's a Dutch singer that comes awfully close..Glennis Grace. If you closed your eyes you could swear WH was there. Came back to life.

I hate when people say that there will never be another! Such a dumb statement, in my humble opinion. People are people and human! To say “never” is unfair and unreal. Of course , there will be another. It’s just that it may not be in a person’s lifetime, but in another person’s lifetime. I’m glad that I lived to see Whitney, Prince, Michael Jackson and Aretha. Even though these were great artists, there will be others just like them in the future. Things just cycle around. I’m glad that I saw each of these originals. However, there will be future artists, on this level, for another generation. Count on it! Peace.
I believe it's logical to state given the incredible number of people on this planet now and in the future that others will hit the genetic lottery in regard to vocal ability.
However, her specific sound and tone is indeed unique and will likely never be matched. It's part of the reason why her so short prime and ultimate decline and death is so sad and tragic. She was a remarkable talent.
