- It is January 1986 and we are witnessing the crowning of the new Pop Music Princess, Ms. Whitney Houston!
She had made several television appearances prior to the one in this clip, but this is the performance that was seen by many millions of people. Here Whitney delivers her song "How Will I Know?" in this truly memorable performance looking stunningly beautiful!
one of their rare times that the artist's live version is even better than the studio record version. Pure talent..
+musicisunityandlove yeah whitney didn't even need to try. Heaven just poured out of her mouth anytime she wanted to.
Bob Billings yesssssss!!!!! 😍😍😍
She did the same with "Love Will Save The Day" at 1988 Special Olympics. I'm amazed everytime I see a performance I've never seen before or forgot about over time during this time period for her.
I swear this performance is beyond great
One of her amazing 7 in a row number one songs. An enduring classic from someone who burned out way too soon. Another artist who made 80s music so great and memorable.
I LOVE at 2:50 when she says *_"Why don't you love me, say you love me, I know you doooooooooooooooo"_* 💖💖
+QUEENKIM4EVER yes, YES! I LOSE it everytime i hear that part !! I love this woman :'(
that high note slays me everytime I watch this
Oh yeah that moment rocks... and she kinda never repeated it... but I could listen the whole day to that one moment :D
SAME HEEERRREE GAAWWWDDDD I LOVE IT WHEN SHE SAID TOO, THE VOICE N QUEEN FOREVER!!!
I just about lost it. I truly miss Whitney ... sigh
Whitney came out there and shut it DOWN, from start to finish. The sound was messed up and she still Shut Shit Down; that's what you call a real, true singer. Her voice was so powerful that it over powered the technical difficulties.
Maverick 260 😂😂😂
The smile on her face while she sang, it's like she said in her head, "They don't even know I'm about to blow ALL of their hair back!"
😂😂😂 queen diva
Hands down, the BEST live rendition of "How Will I Know".
Tamone Bacon if you haven't seen it you should check out her performance of this in San Francisco 1986, id say it's on par with this 😜
Tamone Bacon finally found it
Yes Amazing
Tamone Bacon i love love this version omg
Tamone Bacon, I do Concur. Yes Gawd 😂😂🕺🕺🕺
She could've dropped the mic and left the stage after 2:40 - 2:53. Perfection!
Whitney's live performances are always better than the actual recordings because she's able to sing the songs the way she wants to by adding more soul and less pop to her songs.
Damn she is so good
When we run out of words...then we will have described this women!! Shall we continue
Shes Fantastic! ;)
It’s Whitney , say no more
*The Greatest Singer Of All Time*
is mariah. and wbk.
희경 Wrong. It’s Ms Whitney Elizabeth Houston aka The Voice. Now if you want to talk about being great at whispering songs and lip sync then yeah you can shout the name Mariah Carey. Carry on.....
희경 it’s their opinion stfu this is a video about Whitney not mariah so cut the shit please
Jo Buck87 Whitney debuted before Mariah Whitney has smoother runs but Mariah has a wider range and Mariah writes her own music and is inducted into the songwriter hall of fame
Agreed!
2:38 - 3:04 ... the greatest display of spontaneous vocal mastery I've heard -- and she makes it look effortless... What a talent!
Justin Marsh Actually she did this regularly with her live performances of this song. It's likely this wasn't the first time.
@@biggityboggityboo8775 I don't understand why she didn't include that bridge section on the original album version. It's far superior to what it ended up being.
@@jasonrfoss248 In my mind, there are two reasons. First, she might not have even thought of it when she did the original recording session. Second and equally likely, Clive Davis probably wouldn't have allowed it on a record he intended to release to pop radio.
Agree 100%!
only whitney could rock that damn wig and get away with it so damn stunning
She looks like a beautiful lioness and great as usual.
She was looking like a young Mary Wilson to me here.
A daughter of Zion, The Lion of Yahudah! !!
Wow she is stunningly beautiful and cute
TheFunfairfan I am the same age as Whitney. I remember these times so well and my admiration for this girl. She was pretty/beautiful and sing everybody under the floor. Lol I had hair and outfit just like this. Whitney was radiant
Whitney always could tear up some vocal arrangements! Note: 2:40+ That was one of her gifts as a vocalist. You never knew what to expect when she did a song live. She was magnificent.
those adlibs are awesome
Whitney’s talent was God given! Something you only get the privilege of witnessing once in a lifetime! She is IRREPLACEABLE without a doubt.
That was the big debut that blew everyone away. I remember.
Actually this was. ruclips.net/video/Wg8t31edfuE/видео.html
Yes! Everybody at school was talking about it the next day! It was like she went from star to superstar and it just kept going from there.
Sang to a track. Sang! Live. No band. No dancers. No nothing but just the voice and that talent on stage. Not sure we will ever see another like her. Always loved. Dearly missed. When marriage equality passed last week and there was celebration...I could just hear Whitney singing "all at once"...it happened!
Derek Jones Excelent!! ESto no es playback, como podria decir algun tiernito.... Esta es la voz de la señora. Genial!!
Look at Whitney Houston show out. She just knew she could sing. She almost never disappointed in the 80's, matching or going above and beyond what she did on record. I just love her so much. R.I.P.
Me too. I miss her so much.
LaChele just imagine waking up and knowing you THAT bisssh.
@@TheLowCountryDrone okayyy
1:59 | 2:49 | 3:18 she was just too much! So right sister Lachele❤️💯
She never disappointedd…
shes one of the best pure singers of all time
she can really belt it out
even with a crummy instrumental in the back
she gots 1 of the best voices ever
Thee best
ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS THAT NOTE AT 2:53!!!! GAVE ME CHILLS!!
LOVE YOU WHITNEY!!!
really?
@@Dino-su2wh the problem is???
Once again better live than studio....wow!!
One thing about singers like her, sounding better their tracks, they're probably told to hold back in the studio, so they can blow you away live.. Like so☺❤
@@tashawoods7807 Exactly. "We know you good and know what you can do, but we gone temper it down in the studio". They knew what she was capable of live, and just saved that for the live performances.
Shes a legend POINT BLANK! They couldn't handle Whitney back then #WeLoveYouWhitney
More than a legend Royalty Lifted On High in the music world her and Michael are the highest ranking ever
+Will Jackson honestly
De'Jhaun Bercy lol!😂😂😂
Her beauty, was extraordinary!
Whitney knocks it outta the park
TheCrunchySopa Home run all day long
After a rough start, she got it 2gether THEN... as U said
Nobody i can remember is history or present had this rich tone in their voice it is going to b hard to replace this women...from the grunt growls head voice runs crazy crazy crazy
well mariah carey for me has the whole package to!!
AMEN JOHN B...AMEN.
Xavier Martin listen to how she scales on the “how will i know”.. i think mariah is good as well but she doesn’t have as much of a full time as whitney did
Xavier Martin did you like the performance at least damn
@@MARTINBABEH Mariah could NEVER. ALWAYS stiff. The only thing that moves on MC is her fluttering hands. 😁
The bridge alone is worth the whole performance!! My favorite, and although she duplicates it on other performances of the song, it is at its best, here.
SHE HAD A POINT TO PROVE AND MADE THEM LEARN IT. SHE RAMPED IT ALL THE WAY UP ON THE BRIDGE THAT WASN'T PART OF THE SONG
Her resonance and vocal brilliance is amazing! Her belting is so full, clear, and powerful that it can fill the room. She had the most beautiful tone to her voice too. Her head voice was also so beautiful, colorful, operatic, vibrant, and powerful too! She was definitely THE VOICE and this is the reason why. She also had so much conviction in her voice even with dance tracks like this one! This is classic Whitney! There will never be another Whitney! She's often imitated, but not duplicated.
Whitney's voice makes my heart melt.
Omg... The actual voice.
2:50-2:54 - DROP THE M'Fn MIC ... sends chills every time I hear that part. This was Whitney at her finest ... will always remember this Whitney's vocal ability - comparable to no other.
we will never see a singer as good as this again EVER!! there's a handful of amazing singers but whitney back in her prime out does them all and everyone knows it even the other amazing singers as well
+Simon Waite i agree with you
totally true
Simon Waite Mariah was good in her prime too
and MARIAH 1990-1994,... Seriously thats why the press compared them. Both of them had an exceptional talent. Whitney IMO had much much greater control of her voice though. Even in her later years. Mariah isnt even 50 and is pale in comparison
@@iamshamarbutler3288 lol
the greatest female voice ever on planet earth
but she ...
+Christian Primig We were truly blessed.
yes she is. so glad god blessed us with her angelic voice!!
Blackskye211
Just look at what we have out there now.....bummer.
+DetroitLives313 right what a shame now its more so about looks.
On planet fucking earth!
This was the first time I ever saw her sing live. I wanted her to sing my favorite song, "Saving All My Love For You". But, she sang this song, which I'd never heard until that night. I was blown away. The way she attacked that stage from the start...I was in love. She went to church on that song. And to have the audience clap to the beat without her even motioning with her hands??? That's TALENT!!!! I was a fan from that moment, till the day she died. I still am. R.I.P. Nippy!!!
I get like a mini chill at 3:47. Its like, she went so soft...and then BOOM! Her voice is so dynamic its crazy! And then those growls and riffs during the bridge, was fricking amazing! She changed up the song so much, but it sounds so good! Ugh I JUST CANT.
I remember watching this on television. She's phenomenal!
I LOVE HER IMPROVISATIONS!
32 people will NEVER KNOW
Yes, 32 fools is what they were.
Mariah fans im sure.
Cassiopeia Wilson lol
I keep hitting the replay button on this one. Can't help it! Such a contrast between her slim feminine figure and that grand powerful force of a voice. Magnetic.
guideher yeah same here. She was truly sensational wooooow!!!
Pure genius ! She was and is still untouchable! Her improv , stage presence , soul without trying or exaggerating, and able to entertain with just a mic ! Whitney is the platinum standard ! She to that bridge up just having fun! She is incomparable!
One of the best vocal talents to ever step foot on planet earth...
THE BEST
She knew she was the best. Look at her confidence! She owned the stage. She knew she was the greatest voice of all time✨
These people had no idea how great of a star she was. I would've been on my feet. She deserved it even then.
You are right. She was 7 months older than me
I lived her rise. She was amazing!! And we had no idea how remarkable she was. Thank God for video
@@michele2855 yes she was the best. I grew up on her music. I was born in 83 and the first I can remember of her is The Greatest Love of All. It was pure devastation when she passed but I now know she is with God still singing.
Big hair, Shoulder pads to the heavens, voice that pierce through your every being... Absolutely GLORIOUS!!!
That damn audience should have been on their feet during this whole BREATHTAKING performance and gave her the standing ovation she more than deserved at the end! Smh
that is THE VOICE. wow. she showed up and sang...as she always did...to the end. she did not need to judge a reality to show that she is the BEST LIVE SINGER EVER. and so so missed.
We are so grateful for this rare video
Whitney i miss your magical voice 😔
2:40 to 3:01.........OMG!!!!! Absolutely incredible. Not in my life have herd such greatness.RIP whitney.who is watching 2017?
THOSE HEELS!!! Work, Whitney!
I think it's unfair of me not to cry, I just miss this woman so much as if I knew her in person😭😭just so sad momma had to exit this life so suddenly..life's just unfair
Lovely to see her getting more and more confident and singing with true freedom, happiness and effortlessness as she gets into the song.
I had this on video tape when i aired and i must have watched it a hundred times a day for a week or more. I was sooooooooo blown away by her.
You know you're good when Stevie Wonder is grooving in the front row. Amazing talent.
Wow that voice was so clear, powerful and agile
she had it all, beauty, height, talent, voice... I CANT STOP WATCHING THIS... SO BEAUTIFULLLLL
those runs are freaking amazing!!!
Wow. No autotune, no computerized vocal effects or echoes over her voice, no lip synchronizing to pre-recorded live vocal business, no pyrotechnics with a troupe of stripper tease dancers behind her. Just powerful, good singing. This should have gotten a standing ovation!
Absolute incredible voice and performer!!!
There will never never, ever, be another with a voice like this!
No gimmicks. No trashiness. Just unfiltered talent.
I was listening to the radio just the other day here in NYC.And i am convinced that we will never hear a voice like Whitney's again, ever.Just as there will never be another MICHAEL,there will never be another WHITNEY!
My God, she was absolutely beautifully Stunning and her Voice, OMFG!!
I got the album for my fifteenth birthday, but after this performance at the AMA and singing the superbowl anthem, I knew no one was going to top this, and never did. I myself even stopped singing for a while. A fan from Holland.
I was 1 here. What a great upload to see this musical legend. Wish I could travel back to this great era of music to experience it.
impossibly perfect. can't even put it in a proper way. she is just... beyond any expectations.
Just Whitney, the stage, and that incomprable voice. Raw pure talent. I'll forever love you Whitney! Rest in God's loving arms 💜
This is the night I fell in love with Whitney Houston.
i am OBSESSED with everything about this performance.
It doesn't make sense that a girl that thin can have big and powerful instrument like that! She had it all! God bless!
And a lot of people used to say that she wasn't soulful. This video alone kills that notion.... the greatest voice of my lifetime....
shawn moore who said that?? Nobody literally
iLuv Visa It was said back in the day when she first came out. Blacks weren't too receptive of other blacks who didn't sing like traditional black singers like the one's at Motown during the 60s, for example. Any black person singing a type of music that sounded like it was crafted for a certain audience(white people), they immediately dismissed them and thought the only way to show "soul" was by whining and crooning like a lot of old school singers used to do. And also doing excessive runs.
When my old Chorus teacher would use Whitney as an example of good singing, and the kids would look confused, I'd tell them to go to youtube and watch these old live performances. Then they'd come back and go, "WOW!!" This is actually my favorite version of her singing this song.
There was a slight technical problem , but Whitney carried on like a true pro! Sounding splendid because she was a true talent and not just something hyped up to be a star!
lol I didn't even notice it
+DetroitLives313 the beginning? missing a few bars. certainly around 2:04.
*****
When the sound went a bit haywire and the loud distraction coming from the sound system.
DetroitLives313 the sound guy started at the wrong time mark, but Whitney handled it like the pro she was.
Not like Mariah Carey at NYE LOL !
Thee VOICE PERIOD WHITNEY just hits way different the rest even today they can't compare Miss you Nippy REST IN LOVE...
What a fucking voice!
gosh! her ability to glide between all those notes and climb those octaves and interval! WOW!
GOD SHE WAS AMAZING! RIP WHITNEY!
I have never encountered such full, soft, resonant, intensive, solid, dynamic, PERFECT voice.
Even way back before, she was already graceful, class and beautiful, she is worth it to watch and listen for... nobody sung like her today...period...
This was performed in 1986. I was born in 1990 and remember this song being played on the radio throughout my childhood. It's 2011 and I just rediscovered this after it was played on an oldies radio station. Been rockin' out to this for two days now. Live on, Whitney!
She’s so cute 😭💔 it hurts me to this day whenever I see her. Such a beautiful talented soul. Rudy was right when he said “Whitney’s voice is all the proof I need that God exists”
there is nothing compared to a confident talented people who perform to the world and show how they can do their job perfectly.
I just wish I got the chance to see her in concert just ONCE! Damn my parents were so lucky to experience her touring in her prime! I will always love me some Whitney Houston.
Wow Whitney! The greatest of all time... She's dearly missed by her beloved fans!
WoW.. so there really was a time when performers sang 'live' on TV... with just a standard microphone over a backing track.
1:58 is my favourite part of the whole song. the roughness and rawness on the word "know" is INSANE!
I feel an incedible sadness when I hear any 80-90s
Whitney Houston song. She was amazing. Despite everything, I hope her family remembers her for the talent that was often shrouded by craziness.
Oooh My God! What A Voice! I have No Words to describe how talented this woman was! Nobody will ever surpass her! Without a doubt! I mean, people sometimes say that Mariah Carey has some kind of “better” voice than W.H. and I just want to laugh out loud! Come on! Even M.C. said that Whitney Houston was a big influence in her career and even growing up so, that’s it. You can’t beat A Voice that came from the Angels and that was given by God himself. I miss you Whitney, we all do and may you Rest In Peace (this of course goes to your daughter too). May both of you be Happy with a capital “H”. Lots of Love ❤️ 💖⭐️💘💝💫
Ooooh and I NEARLY FORGOT TO SAY... SHE WAS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. She was SO BEAUTIFUL that NO/ZERO PLASTIC SURGERY WAS NEEDED!!! THAT’S REAL BEAUTY! Beauty at 100%. Okay, she had a stupid boob job, so what!?
The BEST!!!
Damn, Whitney tore this UP!!!!!!! Best singer ever.
A true lady. A great singer and wonderful entertainer. Never be another like whitney. Ever. The Voice. No band here. Dancers. She was clothed. Class and talent prevail.
when whitney was young and fearless. an unforgettable performance. the riffing was the best part.
Whitney was a blessing from the hand of the Lord himself. Xxoo
I wish I could explain the feeling I get when she sings "whenever we meet" because that's the magic of Whitney. It just goes all over me.
This was the first time I heard her sing Live. I was floored!! She toyed with this song! Then she showed her Gospel chops.. ! The Voice! 💯💖
She was having fun at that bridge, wow!!
The live spontaneity was perfection. She was able to control and conduct her voice perfectly with every line. Just perfection. No one can ever top her performances.
love her. i remember this night...she blew it away and people started to recognize she was going to be a force to reckon with in the industry
This version is better than the studio version. My God she’s amazing.
There's nothing like young Whitney ❤
Absolutely brilliant in every way.
Simply AMAZING!! There will never be another female artist above Miss Whitney Houston. Even in death she reigns as queen!
