If anyone was a step out of beat, that could've been a disaster. But Whitney and her team were PROS' pros, so it's not surprising. I love revisiting this performance. Her voice was on FIRE that night...and she was LOVING every minute of tearing that stage UP!!!!! Am I the only ones who REALLY BELIEVES she is a few weeks pregnant here. Her face on the close up shots is unusually puffy and really resembles how she would look when she became pregnant w/BK. She also looks fuller and curvier under that loose fitting jacket. I'm assuming she was filming...or very close to, The Bodyguard because that's the wig she wore for the film and her miscarriage during filming was well-publicized.

    *LYRICS*
    I'm not in no hurry
    We can fly, my baby
    It's your move, baby
    Baby, decide
    Baby, decide, oh yea
Play baby, (ah, yeah) Go, Go, Go, Go, Go (It's time to tear)
Go, Go (I'm your baby tonight, It's time to tear) Go, Go, Go
    (I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, (ah, yeah, I'm, I'm)
Oh, C'mon no?, (ah, yeah) ah
From the moment I saw you
    I went outta my mind
    Though I never believed in
    Love at first sight
But you got a magic boy
    That I just can't explain
Well you gotta, you gotta way
    That you make me feel
I can do, I can do
    And anything for you, baby
    (I'll be) I'll be
Lay all my cards out tonight
Just call on me, baby (Just call)
I'll be, It's your move so, baby
    Baby, decide
(Whatever you want from me) Whatever
(I'm giving you everything) You all about
(I'm your baby tonight) I'm Your, I'm your baby
    (You've given my ecstasy) Ecstasy
    (You are my fantasy) Fantasy
(I'm your baby tonight) I'm every your baby
Whatever I do (Whatever I do)
It's all about you (It's all about you)
And ain't it the truth, boy
I'm helplessly in love with you (I'm helplessly in love with you)
What else I can do (What else I can do)
    But be there for you
You gotta, you gotta way that
You make a me feel I can, feel I can
    Do any, do anything
I can do, anything, yeah ey!
    All right!, Oh yea, C'mon
    Whatever, You all about
    (Looks like I'm fatal)
    (It's all on the table)
(And, baby, you hold the cards) Ooh, ooh
(You got the magic) Ooh, ooh
(And I've got to have it)
(I don't want the pieces) Ooh, ooh
    (I want every single part)
    (I'll be your angel)
    (I'm ready and able)
(Whatever you want is fine) I'll be your angel
    (Whenever you're ready) Ooh
    (Just call on your lady)
And I'll be your baby tonight
I'm your baby? I'm your baby
    (It's time to tear)
    (Well, anyway)
(My name is not Susan) Go, Go, Go, Go, Go, Go
    Go, Go
(Don't wanna hear about Susan) Go, Go
(I Think my song my this, Ih)
    One night not long ago
    I fell for you
Too easy to let go, baby
(She) She was one from your past
    One of the few
    You said it didn't last
Now Romeo you know I can't believe
Your tongue would slip so easily (easily)
I know you think I oughta let it be
But get it right (get it right), next time (next time)
    Say goodbye to me
(My name is not Susan) Oh
(So watch what you say) Yea watch what you say
(And if you still need her) need her, need her
(Then be on your way) oh
    (Don't wanna hear about Susan)
(She's got nothin' on me) She's got nothin' on me
(So show some respect for the love you receive) Re- receive

This is an excellent, high energy performance! Vocally, I think this is one of Whitney’s top uptempo performances ranking with her 1986 AMA performance of “How Will I Know” and her 1988 Grammy’s performance of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)”…
To address the comments about Whitney losing “steam” with the I’m Your Baby Tonight project, let’s put the facts in perspective in the time period of this performance being completely unbiased. Yes, there were critics that tried to write off her popularity because of the emergence and immediate success of Mariah Carey’s debut album and the high rise popularity of dance music and its’ dominance on Billboard Charts. By 1991, Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson, C&C Music Factory, MC Hammer, Blackbox, and other artists were having massive success on radio, clubs, and visual platforms with its appeal to the large group of music buyers. Whitney was a real Singer, whose music was nothing but pure class and not a fad. There are rumors that the I’m Your Baby Tonight Album was made with more R&B influence in response to a reference point of the friction she faced by Black America (research Al Sharpton’s campaign against Whitney Houston) which was displayed at the Soul Train Awards when she first met Bobby Brown either in 1988 or 1989. Yells of boos from the audience whenever her name was called when she was nominated was a blow.
However, this album by anyone standards was a successful album in sales and hits with 2 number ones on the Billboard Hot 100, another Top 10 hit with “Miracle”, a Top 40 Hit “My Name is Not Susan”, and Top 10 R&B Hit with “I Belong To You”…
Maybe by Arista or Clive Davis expectations, this album did not live up to the previous predecessors in sales, but still a great album. This era produced 4 songs that are apart of my all-time Favorite Whitney songs “Lover For Life, Dancing on a Smooth Edge, I Belong To You, and Feels So Good”.
So yes, Whitney did lose “steam” facing competition by peers in the industry. But she stuck to her talents, and that’s what kept her well beloved amongst music listeners
However, we would soon come to find out in less than 12 months from this performance, how Whitney reinvented and surpassed her previous popularity with The Bodyguard Soundtrack…
