  • Shōgun, the hit new miniseries, populates its gritty historical drama with a number of intriguing characters, all with their own secrets and desires. Trapped in the prison of her past and torn between two worlds, Toda Mariko has to fight to keep herself afloat, all the while looking impeccably calm. Her life has been shaped by death and suffering, but through it all she remains focused on moving forward - though more out of a sense of fealty than personal desire. So who is Mariko, really? Let’s take a deeper look at Mariko on screen, the page, and her real life counterpart to truly figure out what’s going on behind her steely gaze.

In the book, Mariko has a sense of duty that keeps her alive in a world that is her personal hell. She is the strongest character in the book and portrayed wonderfully in the series

Anna Sawai is doing brilliant work at portraying Mariko. She has been a highlight and stand out this season. She has a quiet strength and intelligence, which is very captivating to watch. She is my favorite next to Lord Yoshii Toranaga and Usami Fuji.

I am watching this series as I am taking a college class called “Age of the Samurai”. In fact, every Thursday night in one of the classrooms, my professor (who is one of the historians interviewed for the Netflix documentary miniseries, “Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan”) even sets up a viewing of each episode after it comes out on Hulu and then we post a comment in an online discussion.

Thanks for covering Mariko. I would like to ask that you cover Fuji too. She has far fewer scenes and lines but has a major impact on every scene she’s in. She’s one of my top characters on the show.

I'm a big fan of the novels and of the 80's miniseries, and this newest adaptation is just killing it. Anna Sawai is a revelation in this series, and the writing for Mariko is sublime. I'm enthralled with every episode. Thanks for making this!

As a professional legal and conference interpreter, I can say that Mariko is not a very reliable interpreter, as she puts too much of her own beliefs, interests, and criteria into her interpretations. A good interpretation must be accurate, and impartial. The interpreter must detach themselves from any personal opinion or interest. In other words, it is not the interpreter's business if the person we are working for screws up or says something rude or utterly stupid. I must admit, however, that Mariko has saved John's ass more than once by modulating what he says. Otherwise, I love Mariko as a character and admire her quiet, understated intelligence, resilience, and strength.

She has saved John's ass but also herself and her feelings, lol. For example when Kiku and John return from the brothel and Kiku says she wishes the Anjin comes back there, Mariko only translates "she's honored" (something like that), showing that she maybe felt jealous. I think the disparaging between what is said and what is translated makes the characters and their relationships way more interesting

Mariko is not a professional interpretator. This was made clear in the book, with the comparison with the Jesuit Priest and his simultaneous translation.

This show is super amazing! I was worried they would do another version of the 1980s film which was… lacking. I’m so impressed with the costumes (historically accurate!) and storylines and characterizations

    • @sld1776

The show is more loyal to historical accuracy. For example, body modesty: James Clavel wrote that the Japanese had low body shame, but this was inaccurate. So the show portraits body shame correctly.

It is unfortunate that part of the ending of the Shogun series was spoiled in the video. The spoiler warning in the video; *”warning some book spoilers ahead”* does not make it clear that there would be spoilers for the TV series.

This show is the complete fantasy of a white guy from the 1970s. That would be par for the course in the West, except they make it obvious who these characters are actually representing in history. They then proceed to have them do countless things that not only they never did, but would not have done given the chance. Hosokawa Gracia, as a devout Catholic convert, would be outraged at having been depicted initiating an affair with a married man only weeks after having witnessed her husband fighting to his supposed death to protect them all. They should have wrote totally fictional characters in a random year of that period if the show is going to be total fantasy. Not even a disclaimer is run at the beginning, yet the show constantly has PR about its historical accuracy.

The present series is not Shogun the Novel, or the perfect TV series.
Instead, it is the usual meddling infantile millennials, who think they know better, changing everything about the NOVEL and the HISTORY the novel was about, to suit the modern tropes and ideas of the children who watch things while breathing through their mouths, incapable of actually reading a book.
