Absolutely one of my all-time favorites. Film-making at its best, in my opinion. Superb acting -- can't even imagine any two people as a better fit for Lillian & Lewis, or any of the other characters! -- wonderful cinematography & locations, wonderful story line, & the musical score is amazing!! I bought & watched this movie back in the mid-to-late 90s, but love it as much today as then. Tonight, for the first time, I watched the Director's Comments. All the things he pointed out, that he thought he could've done better, such as changing what he thought might be potentially corny lines, I totally disagree with. It is PERFECT just as it is!! And the emotional scenes where Lewis is leaving Zip with the little Indian girl? I LOVED it -- he was SO real!! Just a beautiful movie!! So AUTHENTIC!!

@F Whitewolf So nice of you to respond! I forgot to say.......every time we watch the movie with friends ......I always ask......what would they do if they were Gates and Lillian? All my friends say they would come back to civilization....but.....not me....I would leave civilization and stay with the tribe. My great grandmother was a Cherokee princess....she came down the New River in a canoe in the Southwestern part of Virginia. Eventually she met and married a white man. The story of their meeting was very interesting.....her horse wouldn't cross a stream....so her "husband to be" attempted to help her but she rebuffed him...preferring to make the horse cross the stream herself. I guess that's where I get my independence from!!!!

My best friend of 63 years gave me this movie and I fell in love with it. My friend is Native American and we learns a lot from each other. I love the whole idea of Native Americans untouched by white people ways, wouldn’t that be a wonderful thing to happen, we could learn so much from them. I wanted to be Ms.Hershey in the movie to live native..........who wouldn’t want to share a hut with Mr.Tom Berenger.

Written and directed by the same guy who wrote Disney's The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, Tarzan, Atlantis The Lost Empire and Brother Bear.
