This is such an underrated and forgotten gem of a movie. It's funny as hell and a great spoof of westerns. It's full of both subtle jokes and sick and twisted humor. Patrick Wayne's character is great; Tom Berenger to Patrick Wayne; "I thought you were one of the good guys!" Patrick Wayne; "I'm a lawyer you idiot!"
They need to make more movies like this or like the 1994 Maverick, or Airplane and etc. I love hilarious slapstick comedy movies. We don't have enough of them in the movie's archives.
The best comedy Western movie. Not slapstick, but layered absurdity in a riveting story. Packed with unforgetable one-liners and concepts. A huge bonus is the great song and music score. Stellar cast. Forget Blazing Saddles, see this movie.
I think to really appreciate this movie you'd have to be one of us "kids" that spent their Saturday afternoons in a dark theatre watching double feature westerns. The beginning is especially good when it goes from B/W in 4:3 aspect ratio to full color in "wide screen" to indicate the change in modern styles. The only cliché they missed were guns that had endless ammunition. Ex: Bad Guy 1 "Let's go he's fired all his bullets". A dozen more shots ring out. Bad Guy 2 "Thought you said he was out of ammunition?" Bad Guy 1 "Guess he has those new 30 shot revolvers". They would have gotten it better/funnier, but you get the idea. Today when I watch the old westerns I notice things like guns that fire 19 shots and I wonder why the 12 bad guys are running from the 2 "good" guys chasing them, but I'm glad I never took notice when I saw them in the movies.
Gay Gunfighter. I'll pass. Buster Scruggs is also a don't watch comedy western. An insult to Clint Eastwood and all the best westerns made. Magnificent Seven , Tombstone and others.

I love that later in the movie, the doctor is talking about how there is an epidemic of people with holes in their hands and that he thinks it might be some type of new bacterial infection.
These guys just blew my western movies out of my mind in the direction of their acting and craftsmanship of movie producing which is even more exciting.
This was truly a funny western spoof..... It makes me think of The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs, and with that underrated great comedy actor G.W. Bailey, by Tom Berenger's side. I have to see this whole movie again.
Same for me and my wife. We must have watched it 25 times. Hard to name a favorite quote, but "I'm kidding, just some real estate guy" is hard to beat!

Funniest Western movie ever. Before you go into Blazing Saddles, that was as much a parody of film making and movies as it was Westerns. Rustler's Rhapsody was pure Western.
Western spoofs don't get any better than this! I have never met anyone who has heard of this movie and yet when they watch my DVD of Rustler's Rhapsody they all love it. For a one word line you can't beat Andy Griffith's henchman's response to "Throw another faggot on the fire". It's too bad so many people are missing out on this brilliant comedy.
Roger Ebert gave it a thumbs down so a lot of people didn't go see it. It seems nowadays people don't pay that much attention to movie critics like they used to. This is still one of my favorite movies ever.

I use a line from that movie whenever I have a lot of pain all over. I am disabled. If someone asks me how I feel, I say, ‘I feel like I have been eaten by a coyote, and shit off a cliff.’ That is one of Tom Berenger’s lines.
