Best indie game dev hands down. 33 now been following blow since I was 21. Thanks for all the inspiration man.
Its one thing to be smart - its another thing to put actual effort into thinking. Intelligence is like a muscle - it is trained by regular effort. Most media - not just games - nowadays make you feel like you are smart by cheating and lying behind the scenes. This is like trying to weightlift with helium baloons. Very few games make you actually think - and thus really make you smarter in the end.
I'm very happy that those few games exist.
so excited for the new edition. despite being a longtime fan of Jon's work, it will be the first time I've actually gotten the chance to play Braid. really looking forward to it.
by fan of blow's work do you mean you played the witness
@@andytheaardvark1not exactly. i have not beaten the witness. i’m maybe like 40-50 hours in?
I mostly am referring to watching him code, loosely following his language development, and listening to his speeches/talks/streams.
his longer talks with casey are gold mines for developers - so i’m really looking forward to the commentary
Cool idea to release the discussion recordings as a podcast.
A Jon and Casey podcast is something I’ve always hoped could happen. The lectures and streams have always been insightful and entertaining. Excited for the game release. This bonus content is awesome!
This was a really superb talk. Jonathan is genuinely one of the smartest people I've ever heard speak. I grew up playing Braid so I eat up any information about the game, especially behind the scenes details.
I feel the same. Both braid and the witness are games that forever stick with me
Yeah, I enjoy listening to him talk about anything really.
I don't disagree with Blow, but man is it refreshing to hear an interviewer say, "Is that really true?"
He's used to podcasting with Jeff who just makes shit up all the time 🤣
a little bit into the interview and it sounds like we're lucky we got Braid instead of a Velocity Raptor-like
I could listen to talks like this for days! Such a great gift to release the additional material as a podcast. Can't wait to play B:AE and, after all the in-game commentaries, to binge all of this! ;)
Thanks for making this and providing a deeper understanding of Braid.
My favorite part of Prince of Persia was how the character was telling a story and when you died and rewound the narrator would say "No, no, no, that's not what happened" or something to that effect
yes, I remember that, and loved it!
Yes! It would mean that the Prince also narrated all the times you were screwing around and not progressing the story in any way.
@@htpkey lol it's a pretty funny concept to think about.
Still one of my favorite games
Calvino's work, man, what a precious piece of literature. Great interview btw, was a joy to listen.
Rage quit this game game back in the day. Started playing it eventually again with my then 5yo who wasn't already conditioned by decades of video game tradition and blew right through the whole game. Several times it was a just question from my child 'why don't you just jump over there?' or 'why don't you just x the y'. Amazing game
This was great! Can't wait for the anniversary edition!
This is so awesome! Hearing about the origin and philosophies behind the game is really inspirational and thought-provoking. I loved hearing about the influence from Calvino and Sands of Time, and especially the process of transformation from several random ideas to a real integrated concept. Thanks for making this podcast, excited for more! :D
Never played Braid. Watched a lot of Jonathan making Sokoban & working on jai, and talking about the state of things. Just preordered anniversary edition & excited to play!
20:53 did you just tell on yourself that this was recorded in 2022? It's been a wait, but looking forward to the Anniversary commentary - can't wait for next week!
Anniversary Edition was announced in 2020, I think. This podcast is supposed to include content that didn't make the cut for the final release's commentary segments, so it makes sense that some of it may span years back.
Super interesting talk!!! Can't wait to try the new Braid edition!!!
I can’t wait for the rest of this podcast and the new version of the game!!!
Great video. Always appreciate your directness and willingness to share your thoughts
This is fantastic! I truly enjoy listening to you-the way you articulate your thoughts, the sound of your voice, and how often I find myself agreeing with your perspectives. I've always wished you'd start a podcast, and now that you have, it feels even better than Christmas! I really hope you'll continue making more podcasts in the future.
braid is one of my favorite games of all time and if you haven't played it I cannot recommend it enough. it's sublime, start to finish
They used the going back in time power from Braid itself to explore the origins of Braid
Super interesting, just pre-ordered and looking forward to playing the updated version.
18:30 a platformer game where the main character is invincible and manages to make the mechanic good? Wario Land 2 and 3 are good examples.
Thanks for the podcast, really hyped for this game!
Thanks for putting this out, always interesting hearing your perspective on things! Really looking forward to revisiting Braid - played it when you first released it on Xbox Live Arcade so it's been a while!
Nothing beats the deep insights about our life than your climbing game though ;)
So grateful for this Jon ❤🎉
love this podcast! what a nice surprise!
Fell in love with braid before I fell in love with Calvino. Would never have thought the two were linked, but my god this makes me so happy. Thank you so much for all you create and all the ways you inspire :)
I just learned Casey was on the team that worked on the witness, that's pretty cool
Well, he barely was. He did some minor stuff. You will find a bit on his blog about doing some IMGUI cleanups. Then there is "Killing the walk monster" and a talk he did for the university of Twente(?) about planting grass. (Thinking about it, I think there also is a blog post about that).
He probably did more but in one video he was even questioning if the Witness actually counts as a game where code of Casey is included.
His walking code was included, he literally shows it being used in The Witness in the video where he talks about it. The grass stuff was also for The Witness.
@@SpeedfreakUK what video?
@@bahshas ruclips.net/video/YE8MVNMzpbo/видео.html
Loved it. Very inspirational.
Thank you for this, amazing interview.
~Casey thinks rewinding should be in every game~
Sometimes I have no idea at all what Casey is talking about.
You’re one of the few people I could listen to talk day Jonathan
The background image looks really damn good 🫦
So hyped!
This is very insightful. And the dialogue exploring thoughtful impetus & influences behind creations promotes deeper thinking, too.
Looking forward to the continued podcast. Thank you both for this series.
Braid AE pre-ordered. 🫡
Finally some Jon Content. Jontent.
Thanks for making these! I'm looking forward to revisiting blade with 9x the pixels in two weeks.
Blow of Jonathan has spoken, let us celebrate.
Jonathan, you are my hero!
Thank you
A new video for our game history. :D
Sound is fine :)
It is yeah!
What an enjoyable talk
Bought the game already. Can't wait for it to release :D
Take a shot every time Casey says "right" while Jon is talking. (good episode though)
Folks, please, go preorder the game, it is really good. I did (and own the original). Help good people make more good games.
Боюсь представить, сколько бы часов было записано для The Witness....
Надеюсь когда нибудь узнаем)
Love that a minute in we're already getting a digression on Invisible Cities - very on-brand.
Great content, looking forward to the release! A couple of suggestions for an even better listening experience:
Audio Balancing: Jon’s rounder, even voice could be louder to balance Casey’s bright, sharper tone. This would help smooth out the somewhat unpleasant audio transitions between them.
Response Tokens: Casey’s frequent "m-hmm" and "yes" can be disruptive. Reducing these could clear up the flow and let Jon’s points stand out more.
Looking forward to the next episode!
5:58 After hearing the bit about making analogies about human behavior using laws of physics, I want to get my thoughts down in case they're affected in the course of listening to this. For a long time, I've thought Braid's overarching sort-of meaning has to do with regret and using time as a way of exploring that, from the trivially small scale (candy from a baby) to the largest scale. And also kind of the law of unintended consequences, and how new inventions or technology that we romanticize and wish for, often don't solve the problems we expected they would and also create new problems. Like we wish for a solution to our past regrets, but if or when we get it, we end up with new regrets, in a cycle. I think ultimately you have to accept the immutability of the past and build a strong foundation in the present moment.
Are theses interview going to be part of the Braid anniversary edition, or are they published here at the same time?
There are 15 hours of commentary in the Anniversary Edition. This is Jon's outlet for the rest. And Jon loves talking about Jon's work.
Really cool
I already pre-ordered on Steam.
that sounds like a super comfy blanket
Anyone know if the anniversary edition is going to be released on physical on Nintendo Switch? I played Braid on PC in 2018, so hyped to play it again on handheld (switch).
All releases are digital only iirc.
Nintendo Switch has the time rewind mechanics in some of its Nintendo Online emulators (SNES?). It makes playing Earthbound extremely delightful. ;)
Great podcast. Nice to have an expert interview where the interviewer is not a dumbass.
We need to succeed in the gaming industry
Finally!!!!!!!!!
Cosmic Comics seems like an interesting series.
Does it come out on GOG?
19:45 Am I going insane or did Jon just say that the capital of Thailand is Shang Hai😂
I enjoyed the podcast. Casey's audio sounds weird... like two microphones at different distances are picking up his voice.
Pog
I’m sad that I currently just have a damn MacOS. Should I expect to be available? I will probably buy anyway 😂
I was wondering what project is jon refering to at 26:13?
It was a prototype of a spellcasting RPG called "Galstaff" that I did for a little bit before Braid. I did a presentation on it at the GDC at one point, so maybe you could find info out there on the internet. It was never really a playable game though.
@@jblow888 Thank you for replying Jon
Will you upload the video of the lady doing Tai chi?
Okay okay
Played Braid after The Witness. The ending of The Witness stuck with me, Braid didn't. I have high hopes for Jon's next game, even if it's to an extent "just a tech demo" for his cool new language.
In russia, in school, the sands of time and it's sequel were GOTY games
Hello! I'm in Sweden and Braid anniversary edition is not available on Netflix.
That's because the launch day is May 14th.
So early that there's no audio 😢😂
Ah never mind started working🤩
When is the compiler gonna get open sourced?
You know that's not appropriate to ask here. And since you asked, you probably also know that the plan was that it'd be "some time after releasing the Sokoban-like game" (paraphrasing) and that there is no promise of Thekla doing so. The answer hasn't changed in all these years, as far as I'm aware.
@@Muskar2 then what's the point on making all those videos showing a language that you might not even release? Just to tease people who want to try it? He will never make money from a language, so why hoard it?
@@user-ov5nd1fb7s As far as I'm aware, the primary reason is to ensure it'll be really good. Also that its fundamental beta stages won't negatively affect too many, and that the attention on / support from it won't be too much to manage. But it doesn't matter, because it's their code and ultimately their choice.
@@Muskar2 of course, it's their code. However, there is dissonance between that and the fact that the language is being advertised.
@@user-ov5nd1fb7s Perhaps. I'm guessing that's in the eye of the beholder, but my knowledge of their public speaking isn't exhaustive. However, while I've seen Jon highlight it, I'm not aware of them actively advertising the language. To me it's always sounded more like having an open discussion about closed source technology, like they mentioned Carmack did for Doom. I may also be colored by the fact that I heard Jon say roughly half a year ago that the interest in the language was too high.
better not just copy what industry does, unless you want to copy. cheers, for all the mutes and bans. that means it.
If you are too lazy to reread _Einstein's Dreams, Cosmicomics, T-Zero_ and _Invisible Cities_ so that you aren't struggling to paraphrase them from memory then either don't be so pretentious to bring them up in the interview, or accept that by doing so you demonstrate how unprofessional you are and potentially lose sales and devalue the commentary that is supposed to "add value" to _Braid: Anniversary Edition._ Absolutely fine if you want to embed cryptic in-jokes for your fart sniffing friends that practically no one else can decipher, or when they determine some metatextual reference to a David Lynch film it does nothing to elevate this towards Art as it has nothing to say. If it did this commentary would not be lazy.
Regarding game companies not sharing the details how they made their games: I've taken up a quest to reach out to game developers and interview them and invite them to share how they've *actually made* their games.
I'm running the podcast for 4 months, and already I can feel the split:
1. People who made the game solo or as small team are willing to talk and they don't treat their game development as *secret*.
2. Developers working as a *company* treat this very sus
I've already had an interview with an extremely talented engineer who couldn't disclose the details of his work due to NDA.
The other example is the well known AAA company which *processes* the request for my potential interview with a developer friend working there, for couple of months already
However there are successful studios happy to share more in-depth information, like Croteam (Talos Principle 2 - ruclips.net/video/IM0nSKL2WIw/видео.html)
Maybe try to get some old school gamedevs from thief and the like. I'm sure they would have no problem discussing how they made stuff.
So many references to books , talks. etc. It would be nice to collect in one place.

-Einstein’s Dreams by Alan Lightman
-Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino
(Side note: Italo Calvino is an amazing writer. “If on a Winter's Night a Traveler” is definitely worth reading as well. And if you like it and him, you’d like Jorge Luis Borges too, who is arguably the best short story-ist there is.)
