  • I finally found the perfect place to build the ultimate car guy compound. Tons of car parts, tools, and a motorcycle were left behind. So today we're going to sort through everything, throw a ton of stuff away, and start cleaning things up. A new house, a new shop, and a place to build cars better than ever before... but the house has some strange secrets of it's own.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------
    Common Questions:
What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Goldwing, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make RUclips videos.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?
    Instagram: WatchJRGo
Facebook: WatchJRGo (or JRGo, FB hates my branding)
Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

With a shower, it is great to have grab bars. We all get old, right? Now is the time to put some 2x6 pieces flat between the studs so you have actual wood to screw into. I like to stack two 2x6 pieces. There is code in most places for placement of grab bars. When my lower back is out I really appreciate a grab bar at the toilet. When wiring became a thing, every room had one bulb in the middle of the ceiling. Kids grew up hating that and went to lamps. And then the next stage, and then the next stage.

So many houses of that era had switched outlets to turn on table lamps. I don't mind having that but I always like overhead lights as well for when you need real lighting in a room.

As for replacing 2x4's bc of the glue, you can leave the old ones in place and sister new ones to them or stagger a 24" on center layout if the glue is on both sides. Straight lumber is hard to find these days, I wouldn't tear it out

My parent's home, built in 1937 in Austin, Texas had overhead fixtures in every room, hallway, porch. Not enough outlets throughout the home like we have today though. JR, I enjoy all your videos, but these building/remodel are fantastic - I like that you find ways to modernize and reuse technology like your rack mounted whole home sound system. Keep at it cause you are going to have a valuable property once completed.

Judging by the insulation of some of the wiring (the more round black insulation) you may have some aluminum wiring - that in and of itself it's a major concern although if you're already "in there" it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to replace it with some 12-2. It was also very common to run 14-2 in bed rooms and other areas of the home that weren't kitchens or where appliances were going to be - the thought was only lighting and perhaps a radio would be used - I'm sure your PC would pull a lot more juice - might be time for an upgrade....

Our living room doesn't have overhead / ceiling lights either - EVERY OTHER room in the entire house does. Just outlets for floor lamps... I believe a lot of the switches you can't figure out what they switch are for floor lamps (switched outlets) - check to see if the top or bottom of a duplex outlet works all the time and the other only when a nearby switch is flipped. My house was build in the late 80's (1989) but with features that were common in the 50's - 70's I have switched outlets in almost every room of the house (except for the bathrooms, kitchen and basement bed rooms.

The way living rooms were lighted in the 60, 70 and 80s was with lamps. Either floor standing or table lamps. That way the lighting could be moved with the furniture. Often either the top or bottom half of the receptacles were connected to a switch that could be turned on from any of the entrances to the room. The lamps were usually equipped with 3-way bulbs for either mood lighting or task lighting so each person could adjust the lighting to suit their needs without having to get out of their chair. The switched circuit allowed the last person leaving the room to turn all of the lights off at once.
