i remember the square method from coloring book activity pages. I was always HORRIBLE at them despite drawing since I was a toddler. I didn't really get "good" at it until late in college in theater set painting we use this method on a large scale. I'm still scraggly in the small scale or anything with a lot of detail. graphite transfer paper has helped me a LOT in my pet portraits. But for my original pieces I would use a light board. When I don't have one, the window method is okay but a vertical space is easier so I would use my tablet with a word document open as a light board, or stick lamps under my glass desk for bigger pieces.
It’s a huge temptation to just trace the outline.
