To keep your paper clean, lay a clean sheet of paper over the drawing where your hand rests. Another way of drawing those fine white hairs is with Scotch tape, the kind with a matte finish, not the shiny cellophane type. Very important: Pull off a piece of tape, and tape it firmly onto your shirt. This picks up tiny fibers so it won't be as sticky. Lay the tape lightly onto the portion of the drawing where you want to draw white hairs. Don't press down hard on the tape. Use a fairly hard sharp pencil, like an H or 2H to draw on the tape, pressing down firmly but not too firmly. You don't want to dig into the paper. Remove the tape. Voila! If you don't like the results, just blend them out or draw over them.
GREAT TUTORIAL! Really loved how you worked from light to dark and accentuated the light baby hairs at the end. I always have troubles with my going to light and struggling with the mid tone blues…😊 I have to go a lot darker. Thanks for sharing.
Question - Why do you prefer the electric eraser over a Tombow mono 2.3 eraser for certain highlights, hair strands, animal whiskers, etc.? The electric eraser seems to have been loaded with a 2.3 eraser...in the two tutorials that I have watched. (I do understand that the eraser size can be changed in the electric eraser.) From a neophyte. Thank you.
Wonderful tutorial. I watched your shorter version with an animal subject. That tutorial gave me a sense of optimism for working on animals that I draw. I've been spooked about applying any meaningful shading, etc., for concern about totally ruining the piece. The tutorial here, of a girl's hair,still is applicable. I have learned a lot. Thsnk you.
