  • Various shots of class 483 units in their final months of service. By November 2020 only 006 and 008 remained in service and were looking very tatty.
These ex-London Underground trains were built in 1938 and are the oldest trains in regular service on the National Rail network. After overhaul to become the class 483 2-car EMU, they were shipped to the Isle of Wight in 1989 and have provided the Island Line service ever since. These workhorses will be retired in early January 2021. The Island Line will then close for three months to allow for infrastructure modification / improvement works. The replacement Vivarail class 484 enter service in April (themselves D-78 underground stock).
