Josh McDaniels will be returning for his third separate stint in New England. Can he help Drake Maye take the next step as a franchise QB? Brandon Perna & Tom Grossi discuss NFL news, NFL players, and football.

Mcdaniels is actually a very good OC, he just can’t lead a locker room
McDaniels is an elite OC, are you kidding ? He even made Mac Jones look good lol
Mac had a similar physical toolbox to Brady so he could run that same type of offense. But when he went to Denver and Vegas he tried to force an offense that didn’t fit the players he had. Hopefully he won’t do it again.
@ /sigh In Denver and Vegas he wasn't the OC, now was he????
Not to mention made the skeleton of Cam Newton serviceable
I think Mayo needs to be a coordinator for a while. A full defensive coordinator. Then make his own connections. I think Mayo is smart enough to be valuable in this league. I’m not sure as what, but he was put in the WORST position for last year by Kraft
All I gotta do is point to the Mac Jones rookie year. We were a damn good offense that year and Mac looked good
Just gotta make sure you have a good running back and hope it snows every single game and then boom ur undefeated
@@chuggingtargenuinely wdym? Drake maye will carry the offense
@kevinhilton5180 mac jones only played good when it was really cold, kinda same with drake maye, he didn't start playing good until it got cold out
@@chuggingtar that’s just flat out wrong. His first game he was 29/39 for 281 and 1 td. His best month was oct with 1527yrds with 7tds to 3ints. His comp% was above 65% for 4/5 games in oct and above 95qbr in those 4/5 games.
I disagree with this take. In 2021-22, with Mac Jones as the QB, Pats had the sixth highest scoring offense. I get its a bit redundant, but the offense just needs stability and development, and Josh McDaniels can do that.
That team had the strength of schedule of a wet paper bag and beat the Bills in a blizzard where Mac Jones threw 4 passes. Then the Bills curb stomped them 80-38 in the following two match-ups. Teams stats were inflated as hell.
@@dabbingtoast7743 And? Your point?
@@claycassin8437”Josh McDaniels is a terrible hire.” Sounds pretty clear to me
@TPrime85 lies Josh is great and should be Dallas' new HC.
He also was bradys qb coach before he was anything josh has been in the patriots organization from the begining his resume is stacked bellow the head coach level
McDaniels is basically the OC counterpart to Spagnuolo.
Both are great coordinators, but have awful head coaching records.
Big disagree Mac looked pretty darn good with Josh and Drake is much better than Mac
You missed your chance to name the classic Nickelodeon mid 2000s show 'Drake & Josh'.
This is very easy to clown but McDaniels is objectively an elite OC, he’s just terrible at being a head coach. In 2021, the Patriots had the 6th ranked offense with Mac Jones at QB.
And what did that get them?
@ The playoffs, with a less than mediocre quarterback. That was his point.
@@claycassin8437 it got then one and done lol cry
^ he had no point they suck and got destroyed
@ Huh? Is English not your native language? I'm sorry, I did not understand you. Could you try again?
Look what Josh did with Mac in 21. If he stays in NE we still have Mac AND keep making the playoffs. I'm glad he's back home.

@@dabbingtoast7743 Oh, you're one of those obsessive copy and paste people. Right. Bye.
bro, imagine thinking mac jones falloff is because of coaching and not because he was a bad player who began to be surrounded by even worse players 😭
@@claycassin8437way to not address his points
@@rosecoloredglass1917Bro, imagine to expect others to take you seriously when you articulate in the manner of an insufferable 13 year old...
At least if McDaniels does well, there's almost zero chance he'll be poached for a HC job again. If they instead found 'the next great OC', he'd be gone in a year or two. Maye hopefully gets some consistency with his OC.
Option you're not thinking of. What if Josh could only coach while having Bill Babysit and Brady command the offense. Now we have a problem where we ruin Drake Maye
@ Well, he has a better quarterback than he did before, by quite a bit.
Saying it was Brady it's a wrong take, the reason McDanields ended in Denver was the Matt Cassel Season, where the Patriots ended 10-6 and missed the playoffs for some reason, and the Mac Jones first season where he played in the pro bowl, and got the Raiders gig
The Patriots were actually 11-5 in the Cassel year.
Its crazy to think that Josh McDaniels is only 1 year younger than Vrabel, and both are under 50.
Disagree, he'd dragged Mac Jones to the playoffs, 3-1 with Jimmy G and Jakobi, and did well enough with Cassel too, let him have a WR and a semi-competent line and let him cook.
You forgot what he did with the corpse of cam newton
Cant wait for Vrabel to hire pencil next as their DC
They already hired Terrell Williams.
Mac Jones had his best year and looked like a franchise QB the one year McDaniels was there. When he left, Mac looked less than.
If anything, McDaniels has only been good in NE as OC
I have never seen EVERY single comment disagreeing with a video. This is crazy I’ve never seen a more objectively wrong take just be posted
Mayo was HC was way more Kraft than Bill
Hmm made Cam look good and got Mac to the playoffs. But I understand, Perna HATES the Pats, so if you dont like it, it must be GREAT....
I was going to comment about Cam on top of Jones, Josh is a good OC but a terrible HC.
2021 Patriots had the luxury of Damien Harris's prime as well as an easy schedule (AFC South and NFC South). It was the one good year McDaniels had as OC without Tom Brady. Not sure if bringing the snake back was the right move.
Easy? They played the superbowl winning tampa bay bucs who had 11 wins. The narrative you spin is ignorant.
@@jimboshrumpwow one game. That they scored 17 points in.
As a Pats fan I trust Vrabel more then Mayo. If he thinks McDaniels will be good he’ll be good
I completely disagree with this take about Josh. He’s objectively a great OC.
This will be a very good take by Perna next year, the McDaniels glazing in the chat is hilarious.
Ppl really must be forgetting what a clown he is. Also
Nobody is addressing the part where he said “lacks creativity”. That is the Patriots in general.
Tom just one pointer - Mayo was not chosen by Bill, it was 100% on Kraft
I think that everyone looks at the failures of the offspring of the Belichick tree in the context of them as HC's and use that to say they weren't really that good they were just carried by Bill and/or Tom and leave it at that. but i think it's more they just weren't good at being individual leaders on their own and that didn't let their skills translate well to the role, they were talented trainers and play schemers, but they needed Bill to be a hard ass vet and keep em in line, grab em by the collar and make them do their job in the limited areas they exceeded at. Cause clearly these guys did something right for them to be part of SB winning teams and not get kicked out right away. McD sucked as a HC but maybe he'll slot back into this role and help out more than anticipated, but if he still sucks then ya hard carried by Bill and Tom lol
He was only good with brady because brady himself was a offense coach😂
Uhhh look what Mac did with Josh and now look at him. Went from being lights to clueless. If Josh doesn't leave NE we still have Mac and keep making the playoffs. If we didn't play Buffalo in the wildcard we mostly likely win.
He was great with Mac Jones in his rookie year. Look at Mac with McDaniels vs how he’s looked everywhere else.
He made Mac Jones look good. That was not easy, dude.
@@willgriffin5647 Counterpoint: he couldn't do anything with Bradford and the Rams when he was OC for year, and both before and after he was OC, they improved from when he was there.
@@claycassin8437 that's fair, but jones wasn't the worst imo.
First time Perna and I disagree. I get the logic, but the team needs schemes and trees.
First time…really? Have you seen the man’s rankings?😂
I mean McDaniels made Mccorkle Jones a pro bowler in 2021, i think he can work well with Maye but we'll see
Why is McDaniels hated for backing out of the colts job but bill is praised for doing the same thing with the jets?
Belicick didn't want Mayo. That was all the krafts.
I mean, isnt he just the same type as a Kliff Kingsbury? Terrible HC but great OC?
We’ll be fine.
McDaniels did make Mac Jones a playoff QB.
This just means that McDaniels is gonna become the HC of the Chiefs after Reid. He won't rest until he brings all the AFC West teams to ruin.
"Please god let this happen because it would be so fucking funny"
Vrabel and McDaniels are the Krafts last chance of maintaining their championship woobie. Vrabel is their best chance for it and I'm hoping it works out. It seems a little too desperate though.
At least they can't hire Matt Patricia as DC.
Josh is a good oc not a good head coach, he understands offense but he cannot coach a whole team and every position.
What's so weird about Terrell Williams? Well, other than the fact he just came from one of the worst defenses in the NFL. He was a good coach in Tennessee, though. First time DC...I'm rooting for him. Hope he is better at that than Aaron Glenn.
Oh, and McDaniels is a fine offensive coordinator. Look at how good he made Mac Jones look his rookie year. That takes a LOT of talent to do that. He just is a proven terrible head coach.
I feel like those saying he can improve the NE offense are forgetting that, when he left and went to Denver and then the Rams from 2009-2011, the Pats offense did not dip. There was no change between him being there and him going away. When he was with the Rams as OC, they went 2-14 and got significantly worse than the year prior (I know it can be argued that Sam Bradford had to do with that, but Bradford did show improvement the year after McDaniels), which I bring up as a counter to those saying Mac Jones' rookie performance is a good measure of him away from Brady. I don't think it is.
I think his performances away from Belichick and Brady are a much better measure of his ability, and not a single run with him anywhere other than under Belichick has been good. I think the Pats will improve, but I think that will be because of Vrabel, not because of McDaniels.
Extremely rare Perna and Grossi L take. Mcdaniels amde make jones look good. Mcdaniels made Garoppolo and Matt Cassel look great. This is one of the worst Perna and Grossi takes
You both are so comically wrong
Hate it
As a Bills fan I love the hire! Here I was all worried that Vrabel combined with hitting on Maye would actually make them competitive… and then BOOM, they bring in Josh McDaniels 😂😂😂 I get Pats fans are hoping he can repeat his Brady success, but it’s a different league now and he’s shown over & over & over that he’s unwilling (or unable) to adapt. Sure he made the playoffs in 2021 w Mac Jones but that team still had some leftover dynasty players and he literally burned LV to the ground and made them WORSE after making the playoffs the previous season and then ADDING Devonte Adams!!! Idk, maybe I’m wrong but I think this was a HUGE mistake… the league has adapted to him and what he has to offer.
Imagine what he will do with Maye after managing to make Mac Jones look like a quality quarterback. I would not be so cocky if I were you.
Except the same thing happened in Denver and he was able to repeat his success in NE. Yes, he had Brady. But he also ran the offense with Cassel, Garoppolo, Brisset, and even made Mac Jones look competent. It remains to be seen how he’ll work without Belichick, but it seems like a decent hire for Vrabel.
@@iamskyfall And he even won games with a washed-up Cam Newton.
@@claycassin8437the Patriots suck dude. That 2021 team was also better.
