    So the Citizen's got a better movement, applied markers, framed day/date window, it's smaller (more preferable imo), more solid bezel, never heard or seen one with allignment issues like some SKXs, is used by an actual navy and it still loses somehow...

      @@sebastiang.480 You can say that the overall quality of the Citizen is superior, as it is for the Orient Ray 2 (which has even the hacking on a inhouse movement at almost the same pricepoint), what really pushes the Seiko over them (by a very little in both cases) it's the design, history and reliability. I have the SKX and the Ray Raven 2, and soon the Citizen, and I have to say that on the Orient I feel superior quality, it's undeniable, but I can't love it more than the SKX because it's just so unique and gorgeous. Anyway they're all great divers from very respectable brands, so there's no right or wrong answer here, it's just a matter of taste.

    • @BlagoP
      @BlagoP 4 года назад +77

      @@bonzerrrrr The numbers are lying though. Giving a watch an "8" in quality when it has alignment issues is a joke, especially at this price range. The quality of the Seiko is at best a 6. His durability numbers are just a guess, there is no proof that one is more durable than the other. Design, style, "x-factor", that's all subjective. He's a Seiko fan boy so he gives the Seiko higher marks. The Citizen has a higher value, it comes with a hand winding movement that is more accurate. A non hand winding watch at this price range is unacceptable.

    The Miyota 8203 easily beats the 7s26 in terms of reliability imo, first produced around 1976 with the code 8200, is the same caliber as all the other 82xx miyota calibers with different codes and rotor weights designs, is in service essentially 40+ years and considered one of the most tough economic movements.. People tend to forget this and think it was first released in 1997 together with the particular watch..

    I have the SKX007J and the NY0040 and honestly I like the NY0040 better. Just being honest here. The Citizen is better in the fit and finish dept. The bezel action alone is better and more precise in the NY0040. The fact that the movement on the NY0040 also has hand-wind is a plus as well. The SKX is so ubiquitous and that makes the NY0040 a little special as well. I love both watches but a slight edge in favor of the Citizen NY0040. Note: side by side, the Citizen is slightly smaller and wears smaller as well.

    I am a lover of automatic watches and own the two models mentioned in the video, and over the months I could analyze advantages and disadvantages between the two brands.
    The most conservative Seiko and the most innovative Citizem.
    Resistance: The seiko has a more scratch-resistant case
    Lighting: When you wake up at dawn with the light off the Citizen's lighting is perfect lasts all night, and the Seiko will turn off in a few minutes.
    Precision: In the silence of the night there was the operation of the Seiko, already the one of the Citizen is not heard. Reason why the Citizen machine should be tighter and therefore more accurate.
    The citizem accumulates more load on the rope and lasts three days out of the wrist, since the Seiko just over 24 hours
    Finishing and perfecting the Citizen is most beautiful just look at the frames around the calendar numbers, then mark embossed on the trim pin.
    For these reasons I choose Citizen ... I am lover of both brands ... Excuses, but I think that Seiko stopped in time, had to innovate more!

      @@Michael-4 The funny thing is, 5 years after you made this comment, the opposite is true. The SKX is now way more expensive, both “new” and used. I've owned both for years, and have worn both a LOT. Love both. But I still prefer the Citizen. To me Seiko is better in two ways: 120 click bezel both looks better and operates smoother, and knurling on the Seiko crown is much more functional. Seiko is certainly the more iconic/historical of the the two. But as an actual timepiece, Citizen is better in pretty much every other way. Being able to handwind the Citizen is a HUGE advantage, because you can get it running in time more or less instantly when putting it on. Citizen is significantly more accurate; mine gains a few seconds/day and has been stable for years. Seikos usually gain/lose more than that and they're more prone to "drifting". Citizen face (IMO) is much nicer with the metallic rimmed markers and outlined window. Believe it or not, the lume on the Citizen is every bit as good as the Seiko. Location of the crown is a non-issue.

Try it on a perlon strap... Somehow when I first got it, it ran 5 seconds slow per day. After a month or so, it now runs + or - just a few seconds a day. Very accurate. It's also semi-hackable when it's on a low charge. Just turn the crown backwards slowly and the seconds will stop.

    Another nice video, TGV. Loved the intro with the chess board as a metaphor for the upcoming duel. Personally, I would have given the Citizen higher marks for design over the SKX *because* of the destro crown. This design really works on a dive watch for right handed people that wear their watch on the left wrist. It makes the watch considerably more comfortable to wear, especially with the larger crowns that dive watches have. My EZM has a destro crown, and yes, while you wind and set it "backwards", I really do prefer it on a watch. Just my dos pesos. Cheers, Stephen

  • @SinnerAndSaint
    @SinnerAndSaint 8 лет назад +5

    Great comparison as always, TGV! But I definitely have to disagree with the design score on the Citizen. It derserves at least an 8, if not a 9. Why? Well, the 'strange' position of the crown you mentioned several times in the video simply has it's occasion in the design. As you also mentioned in the video the Promaster was used by Italian Navy. The famous watch company Panerai also has a strong connection with the Italian Marine. And they made a left-handed Panerai Luminor (today the PAM 557) in the 1940's to comply with the requirements of the Italian Marine. Their frogmen used a compass and a depth gauge on their left arm so their watch has to sit on the right. Therefore it's much more useful to operate the watch with the left hand when the crown also sits on the left side.
    And this is the reason why the Citizen Promaster also has the crown on the left side. They also put them on the 8 o'clock position for more comfortable wear on the wrist and better handling if your right arm is stretched out to operate the watch this way. And that's why the Promaster definitely should score in this category, definitely doesn't deserve a 7 for this thoughtful design decision on the watch!
    Best regards from Germany,
    Daniel

      Great information. As a left handed person who wears his watch on the right wrist , i can totally relate and appreciate the crown at the 8 o'clock position! I am still smitten by the SKX 009 Pepsi looks and respected iconic status in a relatively low cost entry level diver! The Citizen could win a duel with the SKX 007. At under or about $200, one could get both the citizen (on a bracelet) and the SKX on a band or both on a NATO.

    I put 200+ dives on my citizen. Also have the seiko. The crown on the odd side or at 4 o'clock is better than 3 o'clock as it prevents the crown digging into your hand or catching on you gloves when working with you hand at a weird angle. The luminescence of the citizen seems greater -which is a plus if you work in the dark or silty water... Citizen actually beat seiko to the water proof market in 1959 as opposed to seiko coming in at 1965. Seiko's history is better documented and they are easier to find. The fit and finish of the citizen is way better.. the seiko feels floppy. The old 6309 diver was actually more solid. The skx was a down grade in quality to mass produce more for cheaper. That said I wear both.

    Great overview. I have a NY2300, which looks even more similar to the SKX because it has the crown at the 3 o clock position. I agree with almost all of your points. I prefer the Citizens because they wear a bit smaller, and because of the better timekeeping and hand winding capability. In terms of heritage, the Miyota 8200 series movement was introduced in 1977. The Seiko 7S26 in 1996. Having said that, the 7S26 is the descendant of a long family line of iconic movements and divers, like the 6105, Tuna, 6306 and 7002.

    I've just ordered the Citizen to replace my Seiko as my tool watch. I love my Seiko SKX (especially its looks) but a few things bug me : not the best fit and finish, really not accurate at time keeping, not a great power reserve and the impossibility to manually wind it (wich makes it a pain when I leave the SKX in the drawer for a few days to wear the other watches).

    Important detail: the crystal in the skx is hardened, versus the promaster's normal mineral glass. I've owned two of each, and never scratched the Seiko, even after banging it and marring the bezel insert, while the Citizen would pick up scratches from brushing up against the zipper on my hoodie, or the keys on my lanyard. Both wonderful watches, but Seiko's hardlex chrystal has definitely been more scratch resistant in my experience. Something to consider if scratched glass bothers you.

    Both watches are great for entry level automatic divers, I’ve just bitten the bullet and purchased a NY0040-17 as I wanted the blue dial, the citizen just wins out for me as it’s slightly smaller and a bit more unique. They seem to be fitted with the Miyota 8204 which is hacking too and makes it at bit better, I’m hoping mine will have it when it shows up.
    Obviously the modding scene for the skx is massive, can’t help but wonder why no one has decided to make stuff for the promaster, might make the watch a lot more popular if you could get lumed bezels and sapphire crystals, especially with the price of the skx going up.

    Just got my SKX009 about a month ago. This is my first Seiko since i'm Citizen fan. I actually received SKX009K2 and the NY0040-09W at the same time. I'm a little bit bummed out about Quality Control at Seiko. My lume dots do not align with the chapter ring and the bezel has a slight play to it. I have various citizens and none have never had any issues. I paid the NY0040 130$USD and the SKX009K2 210$USD. Yes it does keep great time but I think for this price it is unacceptable from Seiko that Quality control isn't properly maintained.

    Come on TGV, you can do better than this can you not? I think the clear winner here is the Citizen. The movement is better equiped, the durability is great, it is ISO certified, the bezel is better, it is a winding movement, the watch has provenance and you got the historical numbers wrong, the watch dates back to 1989. The movement of the Citizen is 40 years old. It is 500 meters WR tested by the italian Marines. There is really no reason why the Seiko should win this test really. The alignment of the Seiko bezel is shitty in many cases, this never happens to the Citizen and Jody from JOMW hates Seiko for that cause it costs a lot of money with lots of QC issues. I think this review is more on the subjective side really. Looks are stunning on the Citizen to my eyes.

    I'd disagree with the crown placement. I wear on the left hand and the crown does not dig into the back side of my hand when my wrist is bent up. The crown placement was a major factor in my purchase. I would not purchase a watch with a crown on the right.
