    The tombstone with the metal doors is called a columbarium and contains urns with cremated remains. The VA uses them in newer cemeteries.

    Since this cemetery is in Indiana, the last, large brick building in the video that’s been shuttered up tight could have been the old charnel house for the cemetery. Before morgues and morticians had constant refrigeration for the secure storage of bodies, there was no place to put a body in the winter months, when the ground was frozen and a grave couldn’t be dug. So cemeteries built small buildings with racks in them, as a place to temporarily hold the coffins after the funeral, and once the ground was thawed and their grave could be dug, the cemetery crews would start burying them. I only know this because my home town had a public mausoleum where you could be buried (very beautiful inside, with space to hold funerals and several chapels). Around the turn of the 19th century, it had a small storeroom- like place they used as a charnel house, and my great-grandfather spent four months in there (he was a volunteer fireman who died fighting a church fire on New Year’s eve, 1896).
    Cool video, very respectfully done!

      Juliemac63 In many cemeteries, these were referred to as “Receiving Vaults’. Abraham Lincoln was in one until they could build his tomb. Also, if there was a pandemic and there were a lot of deaths at the same time, they would rest in a receiving vault until graves could b built. Or, if a wealthy person had an elaborate tomb being built, they would rest there until built.

      I have never heard the term "charnel house". I have heard them called receiving vaults. Interesting. Now I'm. going to go investigate where that word came from.

    The empty space at the top with the vents is for escaping odors.... I used to be a Mortician and vaults and tombs can really reek at times... Mausoleums usually have intricate ways or guiding the odors up and out of the building.... Don't forget, behind those sealed slab lids are decaying flesh whether or not they have been embalmed....

    I have lived my whole life about 200 ft. away from 2 cemeteries that are side by side..one cemetery is for the poor and the other is for rich. The 2 cemeteries are separated by gates & elaborate fences. In the cemetery for the rich (no plots remain available), there are many little mausoleum houses just like you pictured in your video. These houses were also from the 1800's. Since I grew up with these cemeteries and the mausoleums, I thought this was normal, and I'm surprised to find that most cemeteries don't have "little house mausoleums". As a child, we played in the two cemeteries. The doors/gates on the little house mausoleums in the summertime would be opened I assumed to "air out" or ventilate... The doors would be open, & then they were re-locked at some point most with padlocks but I am sure the cemetery caretaker had keys to all of them even if they had "permanent type" locks... I never went inside of one (I didn't think about it then, but now I would like to do so!!), but I can tell you some creepy stories about the little houses. My friend & I used to take a tennis racquet and hit tennis balls on the side walls of the mausoleums. When I was a teenager, it was discovered that one mausoleum we played around and hit the tennis ball off of frequently, had a cache of explosives stored in it. Dynamite, the works. This would have been in the late 1970's. And then at another little house mausoleum, there was a person stealing bones out of it...the man was arrested and imprisoned. After he got out of prison, he went back and stole more bones at the same cemetery!! I don't know what happened to this man after the 2nd time he got caught. It is unknown to me if the bones were replaced. At another local cemetery where family members are, there are very OLD AND decrepit little house mausoleums. These were from the late 1700's to 1800's. One fascinates me as it is collapsing upon itself, and the cross on top of the building is standing strong though. I believe it has an Italian last name on it. I don't know what the cemetery is going to do when the little house DOES cave in...They are patching it now with plywood, etc. At the other local cemetery I just mentioned, the little house that is caving in on itself, there is a road in front of it, and right along the roadside is a survivor buried from Titanic. She was 18 years old when Titanic went down and I could only imagine what this woman saw that fateful night. She lived to be a healthy age of late 70's before passing. In this cemetery alone, there are 6 survivors of Titanic buried, but this is the first grave I found. Also at this cemetery, where there are mausoleums that hold a few hundred people (my Dad is in this one, and I will be out there along with my Mom when we pass...) I know large mausoleums are common, but in a "new section" of this same cemetery are BRAND NEW little house mausoleums...one is so elaborate, I would like to live in it!! Lavender purple glass, statues, wow, just incredible. These mausoleums must cost a fortune to build. Many are hand painting on the outside, and carved in the granite/marble are portraits of the person, pictures of their homes, animals, etc. Very interesting to walk around a cemetery. I've never been afraid of living by the 2 cemeteries, but when I visit one particular old grave in the "poor" cemetery, I tell the man, named "Bill" (he was 18 when he died) and the poem that is inscribed on his headstone is SO haunting it is his mother and him talking to each other. It's beautiful. I always say. "I'm leaving now, Bill.....I'll be back, don't follow me home"!! I do believe in ghosts by the way. I don't need ANOTHER ghost in our house. We have a few already!! I'm dead serious!!

      I may sound too "eeek" but can I ask you where you're from ? You mentionned graves from Titanic survivors so I guess you're either from Ireland or from Canada ? There not many mausoleums in France where I live, well, not in little towns cemetaries, there are some real old graves. What you will see in EVERY cemetary is either a 14-18 memorial or a 39-45 one, sometimes both. I live near a cemetary and believe me or not, I used to play with stones in my garden and veeery oftenly found bits of headstones all around hahah. I wasn't scary back then, I mean, I was always there so eh. But now I'd completely lose my shit if I ever randomly kicked on a bit of a headstone while gardening (which I don't because I'm lazy af but you get my point-) Gravestones here are mostly stone but the old ones are big metal crucifixes that always looked.... well, I can't put an exact word on it, haunting ? Old ? Strange ? I could write pages and pages about it;

    Hi Matt, I have not seen all of your videos yet, but I think I love this one most. It is so astonishing, that people spent such a lot of money to build these Mausoleums for dead people. On the other hand it makes me sad to see the decay, the damage and the disregard of the still living family members. Don't they have any respect anymore? If I knew, that such a beautiful building would be my final resting place, I would care for it, clean it up and bring flowers from time to time, make it look the brightest one on this graveyard. Well, some of the still living might have moved, but surely not all, and where do you want to be buried? In your home country - or not? Even the graves in there look sad and lonely, because nobody seems to care anymore ...........

  • @davidbrown8303
    @davidbrown8303 6 лет назад +4

    I think I know why some were never used. It's because it was thought out for family members and even the very young family members. but as the younger ones get married they started a family of their own and as time went by they wanted to be buried next to their own kids and spouse. It's a beautiful find and at the same time spooky. You did very good filming thank you for showing us.

    Love the video!
    Mausoleums always remind me of a story my mother told about a local man, here in small town Texas, who passed when she was a child and was interred in a small mausoleum. His widow would visit every day by going in to actually view her husband (I don't know if it was a windowed coffin or if she opened it up). Before long, nature started taking over and decomposition set it. She started going crazy, according to Mom, and family had the mausoleum taken down and her husband buried in an effort to restore some of her sanity. Creepy, but so sad.

      There is a similar story on one of Faces of the Forgotten. The guy that does that one was invited to go in to a mausoleum with a family member. The family member told the story of her great uncle or someone like that, who would go into the mortuary daily to view his mother. They eventually sealed her tomb in a way that he couldn't open it anymore.

    Yes those doors were very common on recessed monuments made for Cremation Urns. The lock allowed family members to remove the Urns at special times of the year like Christmas or an Anniversary. Many would bring the Urns home for a visit and afterwards return them to the Monument.
    Customs have changed now. Many people keep the Urns at home in a locked cabinet. Cremation is the very best way to deal with a body after death. Great video very interesting.

    Spaces in mausolea are called "crypts," not graves or vaults. People are entombed in a mausoleum, not buried. Interment (not internment-which means to be held in a facility by a government during wartime ) is specifically in-ground disposition. A columbarium is a crypt for cremated remains. Trust me on this. I've been a funeral director for 30 years. The marker with the doors on it is probably for cremated remains; the stone looks thick enough to hold simple urns.

    Many members of my family are buried in this same cemetery. Imagine my surprise upon watching this video today when seeing the mausoleum! I have taken photos of this mausoleum before when paying respects to loved ones buried there. Also, this cemetery has some lovely sculptures and statues. One huge statue has a weeping angel on it with the family name "AMOS" carved into it along with the words "And God shall wipe away all tears". There is a mass grave up on the plateau near the Catholic section of a plane crash that happened back in the 70's in Rosemont, Indiana. The bodies were transported to this city and buried there after an exhaustive search to find the identities of the victims. A local mortician kept a diary of the whole scenario and the utmost of care and respect was taken even if it was only a victim's finger recovered. I was in high school when it happened but recall it vividly and how the community rallied together. The city does a good job of keeping this cemetery clean and well kept. Unfortunately, I have made many treks up the hills while burying my loved ones there. May all who sleep there rest in eternal peace. Thank you for the respectful way you done your video.

    That super thick-looking Tombstone, was holding the ashes of two mortals. Which is why they locked you out.
    Further, that "Huge Mausoleum" you wanted to look inside of, was the "Care Taker's Equipment shed".
    And if you go back to the row of 1800's mausoleums and note the name of the last mausoleum, Some of those tombstones were of the same last name.
    And yes, That set of logs stacked, the top log at least, was petrified redwood.
    Great tour.

There were several spots available w/in the family crypt, wonder why these folk were buried separately? Perhaps unrelated, but w/same surname - or mebbe on the outs w/the family?

      The Staten Island Cemetery reminds me of Woodlawn cemetery in Toledo, Ohio. The Stranahan Family (Champion Spark Plugs);The Devilbiss Family,(Adomizers and sprayers); Ryder (Attorney, Willys-Overland Motors--JEEP); Libby Family (Libby Glass); Spitzers, (Spitzer Paper Box Company,later formed into National Paper Box Company then brain-childed the Jeep that won the government contract during the WWs while at Willys-Overland. Personally got a tour of the Spitzer Mausoleum. The number of crypts were by the dozens. It was one of the largest ones that I have had the honor to tour inside in the 70s.

    Beautiful buildings .. Very sad that they’re now left to disrepair and the elements ... surely there must be family born later that could care for these magnificent Mausoleums !! Here in U.K. up in North London is there are two Cemeteries with Swains Lane separating them in Highgate. One being Highgate Cemetery- There are short guided tours on a Sunday in this one as a few famous people are buried in here. Up at the back there also are a few Mausoleums, one being the size of a proper house, it’s huge and only one person was ever buried in this one. The other few are similar to the ones in this vid .... it’s actually lovely in there, it is like a woodland, quite overgrown in a managed way by a group called - The Friends of Highgate Cemetery .... I know it may sound a bit morbid, but I like cemetery’s and like looking round the older parts at the ages-lengths of time a person lived ....

      @missjeanferalcatsrmylife5335 5 лет назад +1

      Not morbid at all. I greatly enjoy visiting cemeteries because during daylight hours they can radiate peace and are wonderful places to pray for the repose of all interred. As a latter of fact, sometimes I will stop in to eat my lunch then spend time walking around praying. Also, I love history and look for the oldest graves and the graves of veterans. AND, if you happen upon a really old graveyard you can see some amazingly artistic stonework. Yep! I love visiting cemeteries and have done so for almost 30 years. A blessed New Year to you from Arizona!
