      @nitish.anand99 Год назад

      And if you look closely, his face drops into a low and mellow state just before they leave as the camera lingers on his face for those extra few seconds. I think it means that Joel is scared of the fact that her happiness affects him out of his control. For a man who has been emotionally away from everyone so that he never has to experience loss again, that feeling that someone surpassed his boundaries must have made him happy but more terrified at the same time. Masterful display of depth of emotion right there.

    I honestly agree that the lack of infected actually took away from some of the depth of this ending. @@PeachesandCream225 It's not that the cure wouldn't have come about - or that's not the main thrust of the criticism as I understand it anyway. It's that the cure wouldn't fix the main issue with the infected themselves. The Fireflies get the cure. Would they give it to everyone else? How would they do that if they wanted to? Say they did, somehow, with whatever ratty supply lines they've got: You get a cure injected into you? Sure hope it helps when that bloater comes around. This is even more pointed in the show, where there are no spores. At least in the game, the threat of the spores themselves would be neutralised by a cure. But even then, it doesn't fix everything, even in the slim chance that it got to everyone.

Unlike Bill, though, he wouldn't be able to go through with offing himself, or even facing those emotions, a second time (having been through it with Sarah's death). This time he doesn't want, or want to allow, Ellie to make the choice about her own life (the way Frank got to make the choice about his life).

    I like how the show really hammers home the raw brutality and darkness of Joel’s decision to save Ellie.
    When I first played the game I was a teenager so the weight of that decision didn’t really resonate with me, it was jus another cool action sequence where I get to gun down anonymous soldiers.
    But now that I’m older I understand more of its horrific nature. And the show did a great job illustrating that. Joel was laying waste to men and women, even to the ones who lowered their weapons and surrendered he still executed. At one point there was a soldier (looked like a teenager) who took off running and Joel actually shot at him as he was running but missed. (Maybe that part will play into the season 2 story)
    but they did not shy away from Joel’s dark side. I liked that

  • @Aleckai
    @Aleckai Год назад +202

    I think they could have added more conflict here and there, for sure. One episode that stands out to me as a case for this was the one with Henry and Sam. In the game, you spend a bit of time with them before things go south. Henry even rescues Joel and Ellie from drowning, building the trust between all of them. In the show, they could have easily had a sequence of the 4 of them dealing with infected in the tunnels, and displayed the same dynamic of Henry seemingly abandoning them but double back to save them. This would have made that impact of their fate that much more severe.
    Same idea with David. In the game, he saves Ellie from an infected, they fight them together, this causes the player to want to believe that maybe he's a good guy afterall. In the show, having a sequence like this, even if very short, would have created so much more internal conflict for the viewer.
    All in all, loved the show. Hopefully they can hear the feedback for the 2nd season, because it seems like this is the common criticism at this point.

    I actually preferred getting a solid explanation to Ellie's immunity, cause although there are steps to possibly recreating it, Anna was alone when giving birth and also told Marlene that she was bit after Ellie was born, the fact she never turned probably convinced her enough to never question it again... only when the doctors in the hospital are able to examine her further do they know she was "infected" since birth and so is immune, but we also don't know how lucky Anna was, maybe her cutting the cord when she did was a 1 in a million shot. So even if they tried we don't know if it would work... either way it gave us a backstory the game never did and I for one am more than happy with the addition to the existing story... I also really wanna point out how good that other extended scene in the army med station was, where instead of Ellie giving Joel the photo of Sarah, Joel gave us the story of him the day after she had died and his attempted suicide, how he didn't see the point of going on, very topical given Ellie's current mood being more "quiet" than usual. I found it to be a great way to show how much he's bonded with her and him saying "it wasn't time that did it" when Ellie says time heals all wounds... its safe to say I was in tears

      It's definitely intentional, so that on one hand you have the fans who accept the angle that Joel "has it coming", opposite those who consider Joel and Ellie's entire circumstance building up to the climax because they're familiar with TLOU part 1.

    Having gone into the series not playing the games (but knowing what goes on), I thought the show was an excellent take on the end of the world. Acting wise, it was great from every party involved. I could see Pascal and Ramsey getting some noms come award season next year. The feeling of the world was fantastic, this overgrown and rundown life where the happiest ending can still make you cry.
    The finale gripped me from beginning to end, with a final act I'll be thinking aboit for a while. Who knows if Ellie would have gone through with the plan the Fireflies had for getting a cure if she was told it, or would they, like Joel, have to lie to make her play into their game? And seeing Joel go full "Dad Wick" mode, yeah that was so well deserved. Like when Ellie brutally attacked David in the 8th episode, it was a deserved moment.
    Would I have liked more Infected/Clickers? Maybe. But I was more invested into the character drama and the relationships between Joel and Ellie and the people they encounter. And yes, that includes episode 3 (which joined the very small list of movies/shows I cried at, no shame) and episode 7. And having more Infected might have gotten in the way of the thing I was more involved in.
    Overall, I've loved this show. It's been a fun thing to talk about with people about the story, the characters, where we go next, their thoughts and feelings. Curious as to how they'll adapt Part 2 since I know it's SUPER split opinion-wise (thanks NakeyJakey), but we'll find out.

Glad they both exist, and really looking forward to season 2, since I think that game offers more of an opportunity to improve upon the source material in a TV series than the first game did.

      Fights with the infected help solidify their relationship and the show took virtually all of that away.

The _casual_ way in which he kills a man, grabs his gun, shoots the guy surrendering, grabs the next weapon, and moves on. That was on _purpose,_ and I love it. My only gripe is that in my opinion some of the line deliveries seemed super stiff. Especially when either or Joel or Ellie had to deliver a badass line like "You'll just go after her" or when Ellie met Cannibal boys and had them at gun point I felt like I was watching a play with how bad they were delivering those lines. Not that Bella or Pedro didn't do an amazing job but I'd be lying if on more than one occasion I was taken out of it.

    I honestly really liked that they toned down the amount of just regular people they were fighting and focused heavily on the emotional/relationships aspect of the characters. Games it makes a lot more sense to have a lot of fights, but in the show it just felt right that they toned down the human on human fighting a bit more and just focused on the characters developments. I really liked that there's usually one big fight moment in a lot of the episodes but the rest is all story building. It definitely is the only reason my mum ended up being drawn in, the first couple ones she was hesitant because she was afraid it would end up too bloody in general, she doesn't mind watching some action but doesn't want to sit down and watch something where that's the main focus. I think they made a really good choice there to tone it down a bit and draw in a much wider audience than just the gamers.

    I thought Joel revealing that he tried to kill himself felt a little forced in the moment. The whole giraffe scene and following dialogue was fantastic, built the expectation that Ellie is prepared to see their mission to the end and Joel is now more focused on keeping her safe. 5 minutes later, Joel unpromptedly decides to reveal this massive moment in his life to Ellie, right before we get to the hospital. I don’t hate the scenes inclusion, in fact it adds a lot of weight to Joel and Ellie’s relationship, but wish that reveal could have had more time to sit with the audience in a prior episode.

      Yeah the dialogue in general has been pretty bad. All the subtlety from the game was replaced with the characters saying exactly what their thinking even though it doesn't fit their character at all. Joel isn't the kind of guy to randomly open up about his suicide attempt umprompted. The whole "it wasn't time that did it" was also super awkward.

    Something I think the show set up really well is the dubiousness of the “cure”. Remember that back in episode 2, we were shown an expert in the field claiming that curing cordyceps would be functionally impossible. Perhaps the Fireflies did find a miracle, but it seems more likely that they were pursuing a doomed pipe dream. The choice before Joel was far from Ellie vs the world, but more so Ellie vs a fool’s hope of saving the world.

      exactly. there was absolutely no guarantee that killing ellie to obtain what made her immune would prove fruitful. i have no doubt in my mind it was a pipe dream. developing a cure in a post apocalyptic world like the last of us was bound to fail. best case scenario the “cure” works for a few people. there’s no shot it would’ve been this 100% effective success which i believe completely vindicates joel.

    Just finished watching and Wow! What a finale! The most emotional episode of all 😲😱😢 Also, was happy to see Ellie's VA from the Game (Ashley Johnson) come on the show (we knew it but still), is very poetic, but also despite it being brief, you could see that Anna and Marlene had history and the latter's reluctance to kill her friend, palpable. Then you see Joel all happy and chatty, and his open expression of love and caring about Ellie made me smile. Then Joel talks about Sarah again (that part guts me every time I play the game as a dad who lost his lil girl) and just made me feel for Joel. I love that Ellie and Joel have grown closer and Bella and Pedro's chemistry sells it really well. Glad we got to see the Giraffe and have it follow the game to a t.

      Terrible finale! The explanation of immunity is so boring. What is Ellie's mom was immune too and just passed the immunity on to her? We'll never fucking know because the show executed the mom and fed us this garbage origin story. I am going to save myself the trouble and not watch season 2 because obviously, this show will never get better.

    The only thing I missed was the while trying to find his way out of the hospital while being chased by fedra. That was the most emotional part of the game for me, trying to escape knowing you can't fight back was so intense. Other than that, great episode.

    I absolutely love the music and moments it was implemented in the game. It was a huge aspect of Last of Us for me. I didn’t hate it but some of the initial ideas for the game sound so much better than what we got. 1. Joel and Tommy killed some people when they were hunters and Abby survived. 2. Abby and co infiltrate Jackson, become one of them and then ‘ betray ‘ Joel and co. The audition for Abby would have been a good addition as well, imo. Apparently the actress was using a knife and got emotional because Joel wasn’t giving her the reaction she wanted. I just feel like more emotion/mystery on Abby’s side would have done so much better.

    Really liked the backstory with Ellie’s mom. Marlene promising to look after her from birth, to then seeing her willing to sacrifice her to potentially save humanity just makes it that much more tragic. Wish it was a little longer however, would of liked to spend more time seeing Joel’s rampage through the hospital while trying to reach Ellie. I did like the montage tho, and seeing Joel shoot people after surrendering was great. Kinda wish he killed the women in the surgery room tho. I know they weren’t a threat, but I don’t think Joel would even be considering that in the moment. He doesn’t wanna risk anything happening, and he probably wouldn’t wanna leave witnesses behind, plus it would just add to the shock factor and would show just how far he’s willing to go to save Ellie. All in all tho great season. Wish we saw a little more infected here and there but I guess not seeing as many was a more realistic approach. Even them just coming across one that they have to try and take out would go a long way. Who knows tho, with season 2 being confirmed, maybe they’ll have a bigger budget to incorporate more infected scenes.
