The political landscape in Kenya is characterized by high-decibel wars over words, which mirror the complexity defining the nation's social, ethnic, and economic dynamics. Words are not about intellectual exchanges but about accumulated historic hurts, ethnic rivalries, and struggles for power and resources. In Kenya, political discourse takes place from traditional media such as television and radio to social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook. The debates are taken by politicians and their supporters with passionate arguments, at times even hostile. In the run-up to elections, mainly presidential and parliamentary, these fights intensify as candidates and their respective parties try to woo the people with rallies, speeches, and campaign advertisements. The common denominator seems to be an effort toward proving various accusations of corruption, nepotism, and tribal favoritism, either trying to discredit the other or galvanizing one's base. For instance, during the 2022 presidential election, it was sharp exchanges over economic policy, security, and the legacy of past administrations that dominated the campaigns of both Raila Odinga and William Ruto. Cases involving inflammatory speech and dissemination of disinformation are also frequent, while growing tensions and real-life incidents of violence are common results. Civil society organizations-not excluding government departments-work out initiatives that are meant to provide lessons to people on how to foster peace through civilized speech and words, but obviously such roots are strong, thus a solution would hardly come out so quickly. Despite these challenges, the robust nature of these political debates also reflects a vibrant democratic culture in which citizens are engaged in the political process, though within a framework that can be contentious and polarizing.
