Thank you so much for posting! I followed along as an “adventurous beginner” and am now well on my way in creating the shawl. Will have to watch a few more times for the rest of the rows, but you explain things very well :)

Thank you so much for this lovely pattern and the free video and instructions. Unfortunately, I just realized row 2 has an error in the video, where you begin you drew out and said Chain 5, and it's a chain 4 if you compare it to the written pattern. I accidentally made a whole shawl like this and wondered why one side came out uneven. I was just starting a 2nd shawl as a gift and I realized the error now as I was going over the video for the 4th or 5th time. It's just a minor detail but I went on the video to use those instructions for my whole 1st shawl...woops

Hi. Thank you so much for reaching out. I have watched the video again twice. It's only in the first row that your chain 5. The number 5 you see in the video is the fifth chain from Row 1.
In Row 2 both in the diagram and when demonstrated, the instructions are to chain 4. I checked the pattern and everything matches up correctly.
It is probably seeing the number 5 in the diagram that threw you off. If you listen to the verbal instruction and count the chains that I draw in Row 2 you will see that it calls for a "Chain 4" to start Row 2.
In Tunisian there is a bias that happens in the fabric, whereby the right-hand side can be more elongated than the left hand side (This is for right-handed crocheters. For left-handed crocheters it would be the opposite.) This happens because the loops on the right side can tend to get looser as you go and tighter on the left side. If you are careful to keep all loops as even as possible it can mitigate this issue. Even making the starting loops very tight can help too, like the first few.
Have you posted any pictures of the shawl online? I'd love to see yours!
Thanks again for reaching out. And sorry if there was any confusion. If you go back and watch the video again for Row 2 you will see and hear the instructions for "Chain 4" to start the row.

One question: What do you do when it gets too big for your crochet needle? Meaning: How do you keep all the loops on one needle without them falling off the edge?

The adjustable tunisian hooks. She recommends the Denise tunisian hooks. They are expensive, in my opinion,. There are some less expensive adjustable tunisian hooks. I've heard a couple of designers recommended the Denise hooks. If you can afford them. I have the knitters pride bamboo ones. I love them! They're light not heavy hooks. It took me several months to save up. The set I bought have hook sizes 4.5mm to 8mm. And then it has the extensions in different lengths. YOU can also use the hooks without the extensions as regular crochet hooks. I don't know the prices on these. Kim Guzman has great tunisian patterns and Tony at Tl yarn crafts has a Top 5 best tunisian crochet interchangeable hook sets. Hope this helps

There are some tunisian crochet hooks that come already joined. They're not interchangeable. They're cheaper than the interchangeables.

Your welcome. I do have some fixed and some fixed cable. I bought knit picks. They're a little higher than some but I've had good luck with them

Good replies here. Sometimes at a craft store like hobby lobby you can find a single Tunisian hook with a cable. Otherwise I recommend the Denise set. It is not cheap but you are getting a whole set and they are very durable and nice to use.
