  • This was once the tower of St Martins Church. The church was demolished in 1900 to make more room for traffic. The tower is now a landmark of Oxford and is considered to be the centre of the city. It's open during the day for people to climb to view Oxford from a height, for a charge.
There are six bells in the tower with a 15cwt tenor. They were cast in 1676 by Richard Keene of Woodstock, and hang in a frame made by Taylors in 1899.
Carfax tower has an unusual clock chime which can be heard elswhere on RUclips. It also has two quarter jacks on the side of the tower below the clock dial.
I was priveliged to be invited to join the Oxford Society of Change Ringers as they spent the afternoon ringing at a variety of colleges and churches through Oxford, to herald the wedding of HRH Prince William of Wales and Miss Catherine Middleton, now Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. It has been a joy to see and hear of all the ringing that has taken place for this happy occasion.

Thank you so much for this post. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Note: in your description it says "Dike and Duchess of Cambridge." That is not a nice thing to say about the future king.

@1235train I think the ringing here is, apart from ringing outings, on special occasions or quarter peals.

I think it was a description of us as survivors because over the day there was a fair few more people who rang with us at various towers, who were all Oxford based so I don't think Merton would scare them in the least bit. They smply only came for part of the day, had quarter peal attempts in other places or just stayed in the pub...

I love the fact that no one has noticed that I fell over at the beginning of the video!

@anonmonen Huh!! I just enjoy going to different & new towers, Im not particularly bothered by how many I have!! Although 160 in less than 6 years isnt bad for someone who can't drive!! And 4 of those were Australian Towers!!

Very nice sounding ring!! Go well?
Where else did you go? Get any other recordings? On the day of the wedding, I did a 20-mile round cycle to Bishopstone & Ashbury (watch this space for video of the latter) to give them a hand; it was the first time the 8 had been rung on Bishopstone's new gallery, and Ashbury was a grab for me!! And then I cycled back to help at a Rodbourne CHeney practice... THe things I do for a grab!!

@anonmonen Oh, shut up!! At least I did go for a secondary purpose - I made up a decent band for some nice rounds, and I didnt just grab the Tenor and scarper - I grabbed the 2nd before making a break for it!! Alright, we only rang for 2 rings!!
