  • The bells of Carfax Tower, Oxford, ringing fully muffled with the tenor open at backstroke on Good Friday 2019. The first extent of a quarter peal of Grandsire Doubles. Bells cast 1676 by Richard Keene of Woodstock for what was then St Martin's church. The tower is all that remains of the church, demolished in 1896.

why is the tenor normally left open at backstroke? is it only to be fully fully muffled on the death of the monarch?

I think it is so it sounds like its tolling slowly, but I'm not sure, the muffle might of fallen off, but I'm not sure if they left it open on purpose or not🤷‍♂️
