Tempest is one of my favorite arcade games of all time. These are cool, but they'll never have that same effect as the actual old arcades. Like I was playing asteroids one time and I was like man I need some shades for this game lol
With the Missile Command buttons on the left and free of the right side for a better spinner replacement. We will have to see how to get a GRS. Spinner working
Finally got around to assembling mine last night and not sure if anyone posted this yet as there’s so many comments to scroll through but when I installed my marquee, I didn’t install the dowels I just used the screws on each side - this allowed me to tilt the marquee to be angled properly like the original cabinet. On the top filler panel I just trimmed the length of where it is notched and it slides in perfectly into the cabinet slots since the tilted Marquee doesn’t need as long of a panel. You have a bit of a gap between the marquee and the speakers now but you don’t notice at all from your viewing angle. Looks way better and the way it should’ve come from factory!

This version looks so much bigger than my Gamestop wave 1 preorder version. And that look you have in the reflection is one I know well. You filmed right after someone in your home gave you the "ANOTHER F$%#ING CABINET ARE YOU INSANE?!?!?" speech.
The original Tempest arcade spinner didn't spin freely like the GRS spinner either. Also, spinning too quickly in Tempest doesn't help much, especially when pulsars come out to play starting Level 17 (i.e., the red tubes). I got mine today from Game Stop. I found a couple things different from my old 12 in 1. Aspect ratio is inaccurate in some of the games (Tempest narrow, Centipede wide, etc), sound is muffled (probably from location rather than quality) and was really surprised that Major Havoc is controlled by the trackball rather than the spinner. The display is a lot sharper as well.

I still have those two cabs as well as the Tempest. Those two do need the GRS, Tempest, does not. It is weighted and free-spinning just like the original arcade. Don't take everyone's opinions seriously unless you've weighed it against plenty of others to verify. If you check other vids on the cab, you can see everyone else has zero issues with it. I'll be posting my demo later today.
Great Review! Touching on all the key points w/ the components, screen orientation, button mappings. But if this is the best so far, I'm still disappointed. Seems optimized for Asteroids. Missile Command fail is a bummer.
Thanks for the great review. I agree the controls for Missile Command are just bad. The arcade machine has the trackball on the right and buttons on the left. They really should have sprung for one more button and put 3 on each side. Also should have put them a bit closer together and moved the middle button up a touch. I think that would have been more comfortable. The audio in Asteroids is off. When you fire, the audio for the shot triggers twice (also happens with the UFO's fire). Asteroids Deluxe does not have that glitch. Hopefully we'll see a firmware fix, but I won't hold my breath.
still no - I just got this cabinet, and I happened to get a stock spinner that works much better than the one reviewed. I reached out to GRS, and they do not have a spinner for this wave of Tempest Legacy (even with the extra board).
At $315 now without the riser at Walmart, although I found online deals from last year where it went for about $250 with the riser during a sale. But either way, I like what Arcade1Up is finally doing with their new cabinets adding WiFi and Global Scoring Boards through the internet -- so I will wait. That feature of head to head online gaming (in their new Street Fighter and perhaps other games) and the global top score tables is worth the extra $ to me for updated cabinets. I do wonder why a true vector graphics monitor is not viable for retro asteroids, tempest, battle zone, etc type games. Can anyone make such a cabinet? Would the tech be too expensive? Thanks for your review!
Another RAD review PDubs! I absolutely love the Tempest cab! The spinner works fine and I got a full rotation around the map off of one spin while playing Tempest. I haven't installed the GRS spinner yet because the GRS Trackball wasn't as good as the stock.. yeah I know that's weird. It might have something to do with taking out the jumper like what you have to do on the Partycade. It worked fine in the menu but during gameplay the sensitivity was way off.. it was almost as if I was using the OG trackball on the Partycade. Missle Command LOL Just Get Good! Yes it's a bit weird using the second player select button as opposed to using the three button layout on the right side but I got use to it. Then again like I said being a lefty in a right handed world forced me to be ambidextrous so I've been able to try both sides without issue. All in all I'm so glad I scooped this up! I have added a subwoofer for a little more punch, eclipse led buttons, I'm waiting on a 3d printed coin door, Govee RGBIC led strips underneath the marquee and black carbon fiber vinyl tape for the tmolding just to give it a personal touch. Keep up the great work and game On my brotha!
I think with practice I could get good at the missile command here - it's just weird for awhile with how they have it set up. Should've just put a different game on here
@@PDubsArcadeLoft I honestly think they could have just put three buttons on the left side and left the second player button alone. There's definitely enough room on the panel that way you could have at least have a choice on how you wanted to play.
Good review Pdubs. Bummer on the spinner and the button configuration for Missile Command out of the box. But as you stated, you can upgrade the spinner.
It is an absolutely beautiful cabinet, BUT Tempest is a vertical game and the monitor in this cabinet is horizontal, they should have sacrificed the horizontal games and put all vertical games on that cab. It’s not an authentic experience playing it like that. Bad job arcade 1up should have been vertical.
I would look to make sure your spinner isn't binding. I got their 2nd gen spinner and it spins 30 seconds freely, I couldn't count how many rotations. It would be weird if they made a third gen that went cheap again. Obviously Glens is the way to go, I can see he's not everyone wanting to spend the money on a brand new cabinet
Weird that their "updated" spinner isn't free spinning. I had bought one off their site previously for the 12in1 frankenstein cab I had put together and it worked great. Wonder if they changed something or if something is over tightened?
good review Pdubs. I admit that the new cabinet looks great but I really dont see a reason for me at least to get rid of my 12 in 1 for this. with upgraded controls my cabinet plays well and looks just as great. Plus , I happen to enjoy Lunar Lander.
I'm glad you enjoyed the review. I don't think in the review I said folks should upgrade at all. Review was for those most likely who don't own the other atari, those are super super hard to find these days.
Great review pdubs and the cab looks very good. I've been almost debating cancelling my pre-order just because all the other cabs coming. It's so hard to just keep purchasing and making space. I'm really trying to be picky about only getting my favorites of all time at this point. Oh the struggle
@@PDubsArcadeLoft Yeah it's quite upsetting. From the get go I knew there would be problems with GameStop and knows their past. Why not use Walmart I did that whit the Starwars cabinet and no problems.
Thanks for the review. I am a Tempest snob because I've owned the real Mccoy since 1983. What is puzzling t is 1up not putting in a decent spinner, especially since the entire cab theme is Tempest; it's not like Tempest is a game they threw into there as a free-be extra. And its not "Opps, we overlooked that minor detail, sorry maybe next time". For whatever justification, they selected that specific spinner. Could be they approached Glen, and asked "We love your spinner and want it" but a deal could not be reached, or manufacturing would have taken a lot longer to meet the number requested. Or, more likely, it all came down to the cost\profit of the chosen spinner. I have speculated that they selected a cheap spinner because they know collectors will replace the spinner anyway, and non-collector will not care no matter how bad the spinner might be. But, I really have no idea.
Hey Neal thanks for the comment. My personal feelings were in the video however many owners in all honesty feel the spinner included is more than sufficient and arcade accurate. I just prefer to play like a madman
For some of us, even assembling these things is a bit of a nuisance. Therefore I see a red flag when I see a recommendation that the spinner and track-ball be replaced. To say that the included spinner is better than the unplayable spinner from a few years back is no compliment at all! Also, glad you mentioned the button layout on Missile Command. It’s a crucial game in the line up and the button lay out is a pretty big deal. In all, a good review.
Have the original 12 in 1 & can't wait for mine. They picked the right games to get rid of, especially Lunar Lander with no analog controls. Quantum was fun & would've benefited from the difficulty more than any other game. HIGH score Saves!!! Can't wait to see the John Connor Missle Command game over screen again instead of entering my high score just to be erased.
@@PDubsArcadeLoft Yeah it fits just fine but the pinouts are totally different. Glen reached out to A1U with no response (shocking) so hes looking for someone to send him a board to do tests on
@@PDubsArcadeLoft One thing that works and looks great is the GRS trackball. Plug and play. Have no clue why they included such an ugly yellow trackball with that cab
Definitely the nicest looking Cab by Arcade 1Up. So much effort goes in the replicating the look but Arcade 1 Up seem to have a different design team working on the riser. The requirement by the later team must make sure their design must totally clash with the faithfully replicated cabinet. Bonkers!!
Great review p-dubs. The GRS spinner does not show it to be compatible with the Legacy machines. Can you confirm this with Glenn please? Happy Memorial Day
Mine was just delivered you timed this just for me thanks Pdubs! Will you do a follow up switching out the spinner? Or is it pretty simple? This and Star Wars (for me) are the two best looking games. Where do you rank it overall?
I actually sold my old 12 in 1 for this one even though it had a new spinner (from A1U) and a lit marquee. I just couldn't pass up the Tempest cabinet.
PDubs, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS REVIEW! I held off getting this one to possibly upgrade my Atari 12 in 1 (Centipede/Asteroids) machine, because I REALLY WANT THAT TEMPEST CABINET DESIGN. Sigh. But still, I'd rather hear the whole truth than to get burned again. Thank you for your honesty. The only thing, besides the design I wanted from this cabinet, was that incredible monitor upgrade. Oh well, maybe next iteration :) I agree with you on Missile Command. Owning and playing so many hours of Missile Command on the original Atari 12 in 1, it would feel to weird to me. It's supposed to take you back to the arcade. Bummer. As for Lunar Lander... I grew up playing the original arcade cabinet with the original analog throttle controller. I played so much Lunar Lander in the Arcade, my opinion may be a bit more critical. Arcade1up's digital button solution to act as the throttle wasn't satisfactory to me (neither was that crappy clicky dial they used instead of a spinner). And I know Arcade1up isn't going to put out a dedicated Lunar Lander cab, but this is a game they shouldn't have attempted having known this. Don't get me wrong, I had some fun playing Lunar Lander on the Atari 12 in 1, it is playable with a digital button, but I always felt like it was the joke entry on the cabinet. But you know what would've been cool? Have you seen those transition levers found on video mixers? They move forward and back, the same motion you'd see on a Lunar Lander throttle. Picture the gear shift on Arcade1up's Outrun cabinet (only smaller), but set flat on a control panel. I think this would've been a great solution for Lunar Lander. As an aside, I'm also glad they replaced Quantum. I liked that game in the Arcade, but Arcade1up, though the Atari 12 in 1 had the proper physical controls to play it, butchered the calibration and it felt nothing like the arcade version. Too bad Code Mystics wasn't working with Arcade1up back then. Space Duel is a good consolation price, I love me some Space Duel, but I've never heard of Akka Arra until they announced this cabinet. I hope it's fun. Always good to give Glen some love, I have his spinner in my Atari 12 in 1. It's a shame that Arcade1up couldn't have worked with Glen, possibly offering a higher price skew of this cabinet with his spinner for those of us willing to pay a little more for quality. Arcade1up keeps talking about possibly offering different quality tiers of cabinets, but unfortunately it's been all talk. This Tempest Atari Legacy cab would've been a great opportunity for that. Gosh, I talked your ear off again, but you make such solid reviews that you deserve a good comment. Thanks again for all you do and have a great one! vgv
Does Asteroids play well ? I was concerned when I saw the 2 buttons on the left more spaced out than The arcade . I guess you would use 2 and 4 finger ?
The redesigned spinner still sucks majorly. Mine has the redesigned version and I'm still trying to figure out if I can go from the six wire spinner to the four wire. I'm looking for an exact connector to make my own cable
Good day! Maybe this was already answered but how can I upgrade the trackball and spinner for this machine. I ordered the 12 in 1 spinner/LED Trackball from Glen's Retro but I cancelled after seeing the seller stating in the comments that the spinner won't work in the Atari Legacy... Thoughts?
Has anybody found a way to replace the spinner on this one? The one that is there is "fine" but it sucks compared to the original game. Had been waiting for a GRS spinner for this one but that does not seem to ever be coming.
@@PDubsArcadeLoft It's a GEM. If you could load the rom on here and configure the Trak-ball for runninf and spinner for throwing, it would rock! Can this be modded to add roms?
Good critique! That was the very first time you played Asteroids - right? lol. . .Not sure why a lot of these Arcade1Up cabs put their buttons so far apart. Major Havoc should really get more praise than it does. One of the greatest IMO.
After half a year of A1up, and GameStop blaming each other for not shipping, or ordering enough units to meet demand, I was finally able to escalate the complaint, and got word from GameStop's executive customer service, that my unit is finally en route, and they, themselves are personally following the shipment, to ensure it gets here. :)
Thanks for the review. I'll definitely be replacing that spinner. I have a GRS spinner, on hand, at the ready. I'm also going to have to do something about that monitor. It DOES bother me, considerably, to know I'm paying for an iconic machine, who's marquee title is being presented smaller, on a 4:3 aspect (wrong) type of monitor. I really wish Arcade1up would STOP mixing formats on us. Well, off to Amazon, I go, in search of a Fresnel lens to magnify the screen. Geez. Still waiting for mine, by the way. LOL Looking forward to the new channel, by the way.
I was hot for this cab until I saw the button layout. Honestly I’ll stick with my Partycade Asteroids (8 game), Partycade Pac-Man (4 game though newer ones are 8 games) and Centipede Partycade (4 games) swapped Ralph’s Retro Trackball. (Good). Because of button layouts. Though Tempest is weakest on the Asteroids Partycade since it’s close to the side and close to my knuckles.
Great review, though I strongly disagree with their choice (or was it an oversight?) to make it impossible to reset high scores. Same problem on the Namco Legacy. IMO, a high score save feature, but without the ability to reset them back to factory, is only a half-implementation of the feature. There are many reasons why one might want to nuke their high score table, and not being able to do so is a major annoyance!
Ummm not sure if I got lucky and I know this comment is a year old but my Atari cab saves the high scores. Might be a bug in some of the Atari legacy cab but my legacy saves the hi scores
@@Plutonic_Blue The issue wasn't the saving of high scores, the issue is that there's no way to *reset* the high scores that get saved. As far as I know, I'm not sure even the newer cabs have fixed this yet. There's no way to nuke your score tables!
No, you cannot sadly. Although the two tethered ship gameplay is represented as a selectable option at the start. You just play using both ships. Still adds another interesting dynamic without the second player.
Base's loaded ,home run would be vertical screen like you mentioned the marquee game is tempest so they should have foollowed that and made the horizontal games play vertical
Great review i added glens track and i added volcano buttons agree %100 about the spinner i have a party cade they started putting better spinners in those models but still not arcade old school tempest quality
Overall it looks like a winner... but the spinner? You'd think after all the previous complaints that A1Up would try to source one that will make people really happy...

Either black or at least a clean white! Lol just my opinion. Thank you for the comments and feedback!
Did Glen ever release a spinner for Tempest?
No
still no - I just got this cabinet, and I happened to get a stock spinner that works much better than the one reviewed.
How do the vectors look in Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe? They looked pretty bad in the original cabinet.
They look ok here - no smoothing filters - harder to show on camera.
Thanks Kenny!
Appreciate and understand the feedback as I stated in the video the mix and match of games on here will bother some.
Personally I think they went cheap again buy I'll open her up shortly to put glens spinner in and check it out.
My spinner works pretty good on the old 12n1, but on a tempest themed cabinet, really should have Glens anyways
Yeah, I am curious about that as well. My replacement from A1U was awesome at a fraction of the price. Might have to get it for this cab as well.
Weird that their "updated" spinner isn't free spinning. I had bought one off their site previously for the 12in1 frankenstein cab I had put together and it worked great. Wonder if they changed something or if something is over tightened?
Perhaps. As I showed in the video it will spin just about 1.5 rotations before it stops. I'm only able to review the unit that I have.
@@PDubsArcadeLoft Yea weird. I tagged you on facebook to the video of mine spinning just to show you the difference.
good review Pdubs.
Great review, thank you,
Thank you!
I pre ordered mine back in January and STILL havent gotten it yet... WTH :(
Gamestop is a hot mess
Thank you
Did you really have a hard time assembling this? It takes an hour.
@@SLURM187 Read what I said. It’s not only assembly, but recommendations that the trak ball and spinner be replaced.
Appreciate the comment and opinion!
Getting one tomorrow hope the spinner doesn't suck....
Tried to put GRS spinner on this and its not compatible. Been talking to Glenn about a solution
Really? Didn't know that - we need that!
@@PDubsArcadeLoft Yeah it fits just fine but the pinouts are totally different. Glen reached out to A1U with no response (shocking) so hes looking for someone to send him a board to do tests on
@@franklaronca3653 very interesting!
@@PDubsArcadeLoft One thing that works and looks great is the GRS trackball. Plug and play. Have no clue why they included such an ugly yellow trackball with that cab
@@franklaronca3653 so your saying all the connections are not plug and play ?
Definitely the nicest looking Cab by Arcade 1Up. So much effort goes in the replicating the look but Arcade 1 Up seem to have a different design team working on the riser. The requirement by the later team must make sure their design must totally clash with the faithfully replicated cabinet. Bonkers!!
Awesome review Dubs, but it’s impossible to get this one...
I'm glad you enjoyed the review
Great review p-dubs. The GRS spinner does not show it to be compatible with the Legacy machines. Can you confirm this with Glenn please? Happy Memorial Day
Mine was just delivered you timed this just for me thanks Pdubs! Will you do a follow up switching out the spinner? Or is it pretty simple? This and Star Wars (for me) are the two best looking games. Where do you rank it overall?
Yes I will do a video swapping out the spinner. And in the looks department definitely up there with Star Wars
I actually sold my old 12 in 1 for this one even though it had a new spinner (from A1U) and a lit marquee. I just couldn't pass up the Tempest cabinet.
It is quite lovely to look at!
Getting it new in box today for $200!
Enjoy!
PDubs,
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS REVIEW! Oh well, maybe next iteration :)
I agree with you on Missile Command.

Now that you’ve had it for 10 months, is it worth $450 for someone in the fence? Any issues? Are stock controls crap?
Stock controls are fine but I always upgrade to GRS controls cause I enjoy them
@@PDubsArcadeLoft cab still holds up though? No issues? And GRS doesn’t make a spinner for this correct?
@@MG-jz3ur no issues. Grs spinner is going through final testing will be released soon
@@PDubsArcadeLoft awesome. Thanks.
I agree. They should have left missile command out. That said. I absolutely love this cab. These games rock.
Any defective encoder boards?
Not for me, for others yes
Does Asteroids play well ? I was concerned when I saw the 2 buttons on the left more spaced out than The arcade . I guess you would use 2 and 4 finger ?
Thanks for review. ..Can't wait to put Dell 20" vertical mount on mine and make things wrong with this cab. Is the cab width same as other A1up cabs?
Yes same width
Looks impressive ❤️
Thank you Adam, she's a looker!
@@PDubsArcadeLoft 🏁👍
The redesigned spinner still sucks majorly. Mine has the redesigned version and I'm still trying to figure out if I can go from the six wire spinner to the four wire. I'm looking for an exact connector to make my own cable
is glenns spinner gonna fit?
Good day! Maybe this was already answered but how can I upgrade the trackball and spinner for this machine. I ordered the 12 in 1 spinner/LED Trackball from Glen's Retro but I cancelled after seeing the seller stating in the comments that the spinner won't work in the Atari Legacy... Thoughts?
How did you get it so quick??
Qvc
What are smoothing filters and what’s the best edit of having them on ? Also you can’t reset the high scores ??
I was 2nd wave for gamestop and never got charged or shipped for mine so everyone enjoy theirs!
Sorry to hear this. I heard gamestop just started shipping this week.
Great Pdubs!
Great job!!
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it!
Has anybody found a way to replace the spinner on this one? The one that is there is "fine" but it sucks compared to the original game. Had been waiting for a GRS spinner for this one but that does not seem to ever be coming.
Need Food Fight, but yeah!
Lol I don't hear people talk about food fight much
@@PDubsArcadeLoft It's a GEM.
I think ur riser is upside logo
Nope
After half a year of A1up, and GameStop blaming each other for not shipping, or ordering enough units to meet demand, I was finally able to escalate the complaint, and got word from GameStop's executive customer service, that my unit is finally en route, and they, themselves are personally following the shipment, to ensure it gets here. :)
Looks Amazing..!!!!!😎👍✔ They should of put Lunar Lander... It's like they don't want to give us more than 12 games...🤨
I would've taken a Bakers Dozen! Lol
@@PDubsArcadeLoft 13 . 1 for good luck..😎👍
Please tell where I can get one from in the UK thanks 🙂🇬🇧
Cabinet is one of the best ever
Appreciate the feedback my dude!
Interesting point I didn't even think of. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing!
Did Anyone preordered this from GameStop? Haven’t seen any new email updates on when orders will go out. Anybody else have the same issue.
I got mine from QVC. I heard on some fan forums that some gamestop orders just started shipping yesterday
@@PDubsArcadeLoft Thanks for the update! I’ll keep checking my email
Can you play co-op ( 2 player ) in Space duel?
You know what...I haven't even tried
No, you cannot sadly. Although the two tethered ship gameplay is represented as a selectable option at the start. You just play using both ships. Still adds another interesting dynamic without the second player.
Now down to $250 on Amazon! Unbelievable
Crazy right
Base's loaded ,home run would be vertical screen like you mentioned the marquee game is tempest so they should have foollowed that and made the horizontal games play vertical
They did. It works just like the arcade. Don't believe the hype.
