A lot of overlanding rigs are deceptively heavy too, and this guy had a pretty nicely outfitted rig. Water+mud+freezing+time+weight would surely have worked overnight to build up quite a lot of suction. I love watching Rory take advantage of the many options he built into Trail Mater. It may not win any beauty contests, but it's amazing what he can do with it, both off-roading, and recoveries.

I am always amused when I watch your videos. One of the things that amuses me the most is how these vehicles, which sometimes appear crude, are engineered and built from the ground up for a very specific purpose and how they go out and retrieve "Consumer" off roaders that are not. Run what you brung is clearly the way to go. I am reminded of an incident that took place a few years back. A friend of mine, who lives in Ft. MacMurray Alberta Canada, had purchased and H2 Hummer with a very expensive price tag. He thought he could climb Everest with that thing. He had had it for about a week when he tried to ford a local river to get to an island and when about 200 feet offshore he high centred and could go neither forward or back. The local towing companies essentially said, "Not what we do and let us know how you make out." Now my friend was desperate to get this tank out of the river because he had told his wife he was going shopping which of course didn't involve any river crossings. He had heard of a fellow that did off road recovery so he gave him a call. When the fellow showed up he was about 25 and was driving a beat up old 1969 GMC that looked like it was totally piecemealed together with baling wire, bubble gum, tin foil, and spit. The kid surveyed the situation and immediately drove out to the H2. He tied his winch line to the trailer hitch, let out some slack, and backed out of the river to the bank pulling the H2 along with him. Took him all of 10 minutes. We had a good look at his rig and my friend asked how much it had cost him to build the rig up. He said he had spent about $40,000 on it and a few hundred hours of his own time. My buddy just shook his head and muttered, "Good gawd. Forty grand and some time to pull out my $106,000 go anywhere Hummer." The Hummer was sold off after about a year of poor performance and seven miles per gallon on a good day...............
lol. "Go anywhere." There's a huge difference between the H1 and the H2. The H1 was based upon the HMMWV, or Humvee. It was manufactured at the same factory as the military's Humvee. The H2 sits on a Yukon/Tahoe/Silverado/Sierra/Suburban/Escalade chassis. It is a far cry from the H1. Your buddy could have picked up a fully-loaded Yukon Denali for about $50,000 brand new in 2008. The H2 was for those people that watched CSI Miami and had more money than brains.

As a retired intensive care nurse you would be surprised on just how many babies were saved by putting them in ovens (the door was always open.) Premature babies can't regulate their heat and would die of hypothermia otherwise. The babies that usually didn't make it had breathing problems that 80+ years ago there wasn't anyway to cure. Ed is the reason those ole' school guys are just tougher. If you put a preemie in a shoe box and then in an over to keep them warm now society would have a meltdown. Ed you are THE MAN.
We used to be born in caves. Now we need a $300MM facility and a team of 15 people (all with masters degrees, minimum) just to pop out a kid. What is wrong with humanity?
Premature Babies in the oven and on the open door was the way to save them before there were many hospitals in rural Utah and Idaho. Am an old guy who's heard these stories.
I live in Utah, and have been watching your show for a while now. We do a LOT of offroading and exploring in Utah, and my favorite thing is seeing you guys go places we've been or that we know (which is more often lately, as you come north for jobs). This particular video, I missed the beginning where you said where you were going, but immediately recognized Capitol Reef, Factory Butte and the cliffs of the San Rafael Swell. I've been on this road and made that river crossing (before the floods this year). I recognized the Henry Mountains in the background. That whole area is one of our favorite places to visit and explore. I love this state, and I love that you guys show off so very much of it. We show people your videos so that they understand why our red sand is so special, and how it turns into sludge when it gets wet. Keep doing what you do.
@@Patrick.Weightman income tax is illegal anyways. It was never ratified and corrupt politicians got it squeezed into place. Before then this country got by fine without income taxes.
@@mcqueenx75 I'm more than aware. That can be said for the overwhelming majority of taxes. But go ahead; don't pay them, and then use that in a court of law. Watch them laugh as they sentence you anyways, because the law only goes as far as they acknowledge it.
Trail Mater is a surprisingly stout rig. For its length and overall size, it’s quite heavy too. I really enjoyed watching you guys working together on a recovery. Even if Mater did do all the work.
We have crossed there twice, once in 2018 and again in 2019. In 2018 the folks that were buried there in their Jeep Rubicon were VERY happy to see us. Was a quick recovery with MaxTrax and his winch on my truck as an anchor. This area can be deceptive as it has multiple crossings which can change every year. We've personally not had any issues as we always scout out and walk the creek to find the best crossing possible. Just cause the GPS shows it crossing in a particular spot doesn't mean its the best spot to use. It pays to do some scouting, walk the crossing and ensure a smooth crossing.
Yeup the river isn’t fast or anything (unless doting melt or flash flood) but that bottom can be very deceiving. Especially if a bunch have rigs have gone through each digging in
Several years as a teenager riding Motorcycle trials taught me to walk before committing. When I was a young adult and had my first car (Peugeot 504) I used to go camping in areas most people used 4wd to access. I used to over pressure the spare tyre, drop a few lb of pressure on the driving wheels and use careful scouting to determine my path. Never got bogged once and went past numerous bogged 4WD on certain tracks caused by people stopping being tourists and then trapping others trying to rescue them using snatch ropes. Never understood why they either stopped in waterlogged sand trails or thought HP could rescue them. A few logs or a winch plus logs would have seen a quick and painless recovery. I used to sit in 2nd gear and around 40 km/hr on those kind of patches. Never jumped on throttle and if I lost traction would jump out chuck a few bits of wood down and get back up to speed with no wheel spin. River crossings I did not do as without 4WD or a gravel bottom a 2wd car is as good as stuck.
I’ve spent lots of time in Loa. My grandpa (102 years old now ) and grandmother lives there for a long long time. Stan’s burger shack is the best! Great video as always.
Your tale of how Ed was born premature and had a shoe box in the oven as a bet hits close to home for me. I was born 3 months premature back in 1963. When my parents brought me home they used my dad's handkerchiefs as diapers and I too slept in a shoe box in the oven. Ed and I are "Box Brothers"!!! LOL
Between the two of you guys, you could take-over the towing game over the whole state of Utah, I see a line of tow/rescue vehicles, and a string of garages for the taking, great video guys, thanks for sharing.
"Put little baby Ed in the oven to keep him warm" Just that think on your feet and we'll be ok no matter what attitude is amazing, no wonder he's the Ed everyone loves, came from good strong stock by the sounds of it.
Same story with my grandmother. The doctor gave her to my great-grandfather in a shoebox, and he put her in the oven. This would have been around 1900 in rural Nevada, so not much else you could do at the time. I am also sure it would have been a wood burning stove..
I thought this video looked familiar, I already saw it on Rory's channel with Matt on cellphone camera. 👍 Love that Trail Mater, Mad Max would be impressed. Sorry Morrvair you look good too. Thank God Ed's parents didn't forget to take him out of the oven when he was done. 😂😂😂

Thanks crew, and I hope the Dew and Maverik snacks got put to good use!
You're right by the only place I've ever seen a vehicle seriously damaged by a snatch-um strap, same concept as your ropes. An F-150 driver decided to play in the river at that crossing for a bit and burried it up to the rocker panels. Other vehicles with him had connected 2- 30ft straps together and got a big run at it. The strap had somehow cut/broke off the back of the tow vehicle and shot back hard enought to go throught the plastic grill and radiator of the F-150 and destroyed the cooling fan as well. They had plenty of help and we didn't have a vehicle that would have helped any so all we could do is wish them luck as we continued on our way.
That was crazy watching Trail Mater being flung backwards and that 4 runner just didn't budge . I 'm glad you have friends like { Rorey } ? Very cool recovery Matt , even though you didn't get to try . Even better was the rolling start " Rorey " never took his eyes off you then he left you in the dust. @@StuArts-Kustoms i mean it depends on the era, i heard back in the 30's and 40's they were putting people in gas ovens. lol
sorry, i like dark humor.
In an OVEN for real dude is as tough as nails
Ed, born in a shoe box, baked in an oven
And the customer comes and has lunch with you too. you are all so freaking wholesome!
Gotta love the sound of a Big Block!!!! Doesn't matter if it's a Chevy, Ford, Dodge, or a Caddie!!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘
I love that it's a group that goes together instead of just one person all the time there's safety in numbers
Ed is the reason those ole' school guys are just tougher. If you put a preemie in a shoe box and then in an over to keep them warm now society would have a meltdown. Ed you are THE MAN.
GOBBLESS BROTHER
"Poverty makes strong men!" silly point of view. you should go to a cave the like real strong men did before they needed society to help them.
We used to be born in caves. Now we need a $300MM facility and a team of 15 people (all with masters degrees, minimum) just to pop out a kid. What is wrong with humanity?
@@bradhowlett1 guess what the survival rate for women giving birth, and children under 5 was like compared to now
Premature Babies in the oven and on the open door was the way to save them before there were many hospitals in rural Utah and Idaho. Am an old guy who's heard these stories.
I love the banter between everyone and its always a treat to see Rory and Trailmater. The drag race at the end was fantastic
Utah is absolutely perfect for 4x4. If it wasn't for the heat and the income tax I'd move in a heartbeat.
@@Patrick.Weightman where do you currently live? I'm in California and the income tax is way higher here than Utah.
@@Hebrew42Day Washington. So I pay 0%. *ANY* amount is too high, regardless of what others pay.
Right? I was surprised when he said it's 6800 lbs.
7200lbs walking away from the Morrvair is insanity! That was awesome! Can’t wait to see Matt’s supercharged LS2 👀👀👀
Yup. I was surprised but he gaptized Matt lol
No replacement for displacement
Lizzy doing cartwheels is just right for the end! Thanks.
That's a beautiful 3rd gen 4runner
So much fun! Love it when Matt works with Rory. Two delightful gents!
You know you're in for a ride when Rory shows up; damn I love his rig!
Oh my trail Mater sounds awesome , that was a great run … y’all are all awesome !!!!
I’ve spent lots of time in Loa. My grandpa (102 years old now ) and grandmother lives there for a long long time. Stan’s burger shack is the best! Great video as always.
4:09 Lizzy with her casual use of godlike powers.
I do appreciate her putting on the muck boots, just to make us mortals feel better.
LOL
Rory has a great wrecker for recovery , racing Matt, rock crawling and a wench fro any occasion.
Great show just wish it was a little longer.
He also has winches.
Trevor’s excitement at being in the front seat makes me happy
Between the two of you guys, you could take-over the towing game over the whole state of Utah, I see a line of tow/rescue vehicles, and a string of garages for the taking, great video guys, thanks for sharing.
We’re moving to Hurricane just because of this channel. You all are amazing and I still wear my wonder towing hat with pride
Man that sounds scary, but I suppose the other option is death so the risk is worth it.
I thought this video looked familiar, I already saw it on Rory's channel with Matt on cellphone camera. 👍
Love that Trail Mater, Mad Max would be impressed. Sorry Morrvair you look good too.
Thank God Ed's parents didn't forget to take him out of the oven when he was done. 😂😂😂
When i watch your chanel and lizzy is on it , i get a big grin on my face.she has a great personality, everyone there does have a great personality.
Lizzie finally figured out how to keep her feet dry. Just stay on top of the cold water.
Good job everyone ! 👍
That ol’ big block walked away on ya, Matt. Gonna need more power now. Rumor has is that Paul just got a crate full of ponies.
I have heard Paul say that his new crawler just has to out run mat in the morr
@@Clawson_customs once he has all cylinders firing, I’m sure the Yota will walk away. Then Matt will upgrade so he can out do Paul. It’s going to be epic!
Paul has a new motor for it
Matt's expression when Mater is passing him is priceless.
I love how that expensive overlander rig was pulled out by a rig that was literally pieced together from other vehicles. :) I love the content here.
True, but a vehicle on dry land has a big advantage over one stuck in mud.
Two rigs custom built by their owners for 2 very different and specific purposes.
I mean no shit. One was built to overland and the other was made to literally rescue off-road vehicles.
Just the most amazing, happy, unbeatable recovery crew in THE WORLD!
Matt you alway brighten my day with your humor and quick witted responses. 💛 of course this includes Lizzy, Trevor, and the rest of the wrangler rascals 💛
Well, I'd say Ed came out pretty well done, 'cause he's done pretty well in life... Everyone loves Ed!
😊👍
I love these videos, I've been watching since early 2019. I even got a chance to meet Matt, Rory and some of the crew a week ago, but I can't say I was able to contain my excitement and I kinda spazzed out. They were super cool about it though, really nice people. If you get the chance to meet them, plan what you are going to say before hand so you don't just babble like I did!
Super nice truck , What a great mash up of different things going on. See you on the next one. Cheers.
Is there nothing Lizzy can't do? Equestrian, musician, fabricator, recovery team, gymnast, dance instructor. I am impressed.
Trailmater is a runner. Sounded good. I'm surprised it walked the moorvair. The shift's too spot-on dudes a driver.
Big Block
Nice recovery and smart of Matt to get Rory to the frozen Toyota. Interesting on Ed's baby story and must have been more common than I first thought with story of my grandmother also being a preme baby at 2lbs. born in 1911 in eastern Kansas and kept warm in a shoe box in a oven.
I miss Tucker on these recoveries, he's a mini Matt, great kid.
Looks like the big Mack military tank wrecker in mini . Awesome winch man love it. The big Mack tank rig wrecker is what my uncle drove in service. Well one of many he had tracked one as well. He taught me everything I know about mechanic Craft. It's an honor to be his apprentice.
Trevor and Lizzy with the "tiptoe off" at the end had me cracking up. All you guys are such great people.
Wow a Nice 3rd gen 4runner !🤙🏼
So Ed’s Papa said,we’ll get him out….of the oven….🤣😂
Slow cooked
Trail Mater really moves!😮
We've been in that spot in our Ram 1500 and had no issues on the trail. Season matters when you do water crossings!
Wow, trailmater really is quite the unit! Can go anywhere off-road, get anything unstuck, and even win a race at the end of it all!!
Matt should have him build one of those trailmater's for his business.
Lizzy and Trevor joking around about who's taller on the outro is hilarious! Watching Trevor slowly getting shorter had me in stitches.
The best channel on RUclips no doubt.
Trevor getting to sit in the front seat twice is like bringing a Make-a-Wish kid along
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 can’t stop laughing!!!!
Justin Sane - That's one of the most genius backhanded compliments i've ever seen. Well done.
Last time he got hit in the head quite nicely. I guess the team just isn't sure how long they are gonna have him, if he keeps with the shenanigans...
I think I'd be offended if I could stop laughing 🤣 Well played sir.
Brutal 😅
Old rolling grounds. Crossed the Muddy River many times in TJ and JK. Remote country between Goblin & Factory Butte. Glad you got him out.
I love Tow Mater, beauty of a truck.
What an awesome rescue and collaboration! So rad Rory and Trailmater were able to extract the rig. That was a rad race at the end. The Trailmater is a beast. Hope y’all had a great lunch?! Keep up the awesome videos.
Way to save day rory nice to see you working with the crew
I love that man's truck!
Its badass. Something you would see in mad max.
Gives bun in the oven a whole new meaning, lol!
Couple of weeks ago I saw Rory's video. Good job of helping him out filming it. In time he will be as good as the rest and eventually have his own cameraman. Surprised there was not water in the rear end , he must have had good seals.
Oh Matt, that seniority joke was a dirty trick to play 😂😂😂
I am hooked on Matt’s recovery. It’s great family fun entertainment .
Rory, “It’s 6,800 pounds, without me in it”🤣
