- This is my grandmother's recipe for real Southern Style Cornbread cooked in a Cast Iron Skillet. It is so good with margarine for a meal or mixing it up in a cold glass of milk. Cornbread just has to be one of the best Southern Recipes.
This is what I have looking for no sugar so tasty thank you from Ireland
Both of my parents and grandparents made and my parents still make cornbread as a staple - as do I! Each recipe varies from region to region and the varieties are endless as to what you can add or not add! This is exactly what many southerner's were raised on! Sugar wasn't included in ours but who is to say that is wrong? I love milk and cornbread too. My parents could and can do either milk or buttermilk, but I'm not a fan of buttermilk either - just in cooking! LOL. Well done - thanks for sharing.... keep home - cooked recipes and traditions alive.
@Benjamin Eby Cornbread with sugar is *corncake*
I miss it like crazy .. my momawas from ok. Ozark's was onley one in kansas that i knew made it basicly this way .. 👍
A big THANK YOU for making cornbread the way real Southerners make it.
HOW COME THEY NEVER SHOW THE RECIPE
@@robertadams4496 you got to be smart enough to listen.
Yes, it was!
Thank you for making this video my mother passed when I was 19 and I never got a chance to learn her cornbread I only knew bits and pieces. The only thing different is she used butter in her iron skillet but I'm thrilled to have found this watching it brought tears to my eyes I'm going to make it today for my family. THANK YOU❤️
I love cornbread!!! With butter. Or with vegetable beef soup. Or with pinto beans. Or with speckled butter beans. Or with ice cold milk (which my father-in-law always called "depression ice cream"). That's just good eatin' right there, ma'am! Thanks for the great recipe!
I recall when I was young my father would have cornbread, left from supper, in milk for a snack before bed. Kind of a replay of growing up in a tiny house with three brothers and their little mother. His dad had died. I have really gotten talkative tonight. Sorry, goodnight. God bless all. ❤
In the Deep South, we often fry 1 pound of bacon in the skillet first, and use the bacon drippings for oil, reserving some bacon drippings to smooth over top of batter before baking the cornbread in the skillet. This gives the cornbread a wonderful flavor and creates a crunchy crackling crust. Serve with some delish pole beans simmered with onions and salt pork. Yum!
My grand father loved corn bread crumbled in milk. I never have cared for it that way but I do love corn bread and still make it like your grand mother and mine.😊 Except I never use prepared mixes. Cornbread is so easy, I don't see the point of commercial mixes.
Good to see that you don't ruin it by making it sweet and cake like.
I made it yesterday, following all of your directions, and I heated the skillet THIRTY MINUTES in 450°. It is magnificent! You are THE Queen of real Southern cornbread!!!!
bonnie stone Wow, thank you. I guess it was my grandmother that was the queen though, cause I made it just like she used to do it. Thank you for an awesome comment to wake up too this morning. Have a great day!!
Best Real Southern Cornbread video I've seen yet!! Thank you Debbie for sharing!
my little grandma had cornbread crumbled up in sweet milk every evening. She choked the whole time she ate it, but she did love it. Sweet memory!
Great! No sugar! Just like my mom's Thanks!
Thank you, Debbie! It looks just like the one my mother in law gave me nearly 50 years ago. I just measured across with a ruler and my pan is 8 inches. Thank you so much for this video. I couldn’t remember her recipe exactly. (She’s been gone now for several years) when I made it there always was something missing. Your recipe was like watching her make it. I tried yours tonight ... the minute I tasted it I knew the missing ingredient was the buttermilk! It was amazing. It’s funny how food can take you back in time! Thank you again! Now I can pass it down to my children!
Awwwww... thank you so much!! You made my day. I'm so glad you were able to make yours and it was like the one you remembered. You have a wonderful week!!
No bloody sugar this is it the real McCoy ! Loved it.
Looks so yummy, being a southern gal i love my cornbread with pintos and turnip greens ;)
Pinto's Yes! Fried pork chops or chicken!
Yes, my mama made this on Saturday and we stuffed on it all dah
My daddy would crumble his cornbread in milk too but he loved it in a tall glass of cold buttermilk the best and yes momma would make soup beans and cornbread for dinner with chopped vidalia onion to go on top
When I first saw the amount of oil going into the skillet - I thought it would be way too much, but then you incorporated most of it into the cornbread batter....It must make it deliciously soft on the inside but super crispy on the outside....drooling!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your Grandma's recipe. Liked and subscribed too :).x
Hard to find a woman like you anymore. That cornbread recipe is very correct. That is the way all true southern women cook cornbread. You stole my heart with that Cornbread!!!!! Great Video!!
Ah thank you. That makes me feel good cause that's exactly how my grandma made it. Thanks for the best compliment. You have a great week!!
Cornbread and whole Buttermilk is my go to snack topped off with sweet onions sends me into a deep sleep.
I eat cornbread and sweet milk all the time. I eat it because I love it!!! I'M 63 NOTHING NEW TO ME!!!
My Mama always loved her some cornbread and buttermilk too! (I can't drink buttermilk either. Blech!) She never measures and she always pours her hot oil into her batter. Pretty much exact same recipe. Yours looks amazing!
Side note- Margarine and canola oil are both really bad for you! Believe it or not, the old folks were right. We're back to butter and bacon grease!
Perhaps I'm one of the "mental" problems who just simply Despise joey xiden & VP Harris had no qualms about being NexT in power tho her sheer STUPIDITY & O'Bummer's Intensity created the exact horror your imagination was not meant to be seen. Horrible President as far as I'm concerned 😡
Well I use baccon🤔drippings if I'd oven-fried some of those pig parts for grease alone Except for the Bacon parts and wherever the Hams leave the body and that's all I know OR Want to know!
Clear ?
Thanks,
Les
That was like 1/2 cup of oil, not 2tbsp. Lol
LiveLaugh MakeLove that was 1 cup!
I said the same thing to my husband. LOL
She started out with 2tbsp when your a southern cook you eyeball everything for how you like it when you have made cornbread since you were a young teen you know what it looks like.... she added the extra oil so it would cover the skillet and have extra to go in the skillet
That’s what I was thinking!! 😁
This is a LOVELY Corn Bread !!!! Just like my Moms !! Thank you !
When cream has been separated from the full fat milk, what is left is skimmed milk. The cream is churned and becomes butter. What is left is buttermilk.
Love this. No sugar.
My Mama was from Texas and she used this exact same recipe for cornbread. She didn't put the cast iron skillet in the oven though. She oiled the skillet and got it good and hot on the stove. She added oil to the batter at room temp, not hot. Then she poured the batter in the skillet with the fire set high and cooked it on the stove for a few minutes to get a nice thick and crispy crust on the bottom before putting it in the oven. Love it when it first comes out of the oven... can bearly touch it... burning your fingers cutting off the crust to butter it and eat it hot... just the best! Oh... and adding sugar makes it corn cake, not "cornbread" from my perspective.
You are Absolutely Correct but I'm trying one recipe after another looking for perfection and never really going back to the best ones I know about the "Dumb" with a cap D!
Yes my mother also made her cornbread without sugar as well.
dinner at your house...love southern women, yawl are the best
ya'll
Y'all
That looks like the perfect pan of cornbread. I always have to have a piece of corn bread when it is fresh out of the oven, slathered with butter. Nothing better.
That's the way my mema made cornbread.. thank you for sharing this it reminded me of her.
Debbie, that cornbread looks fabulous! Just like my mom's. It has been awhile since I made it and I couldn' t remember the recipe exactly (I had never written it down). Think I found what I was looking for. Btw, I can't stand sweet cornbread either! Love your channel. --Lila
You make it exactly like I do! And you’re sooo right about it NOT being sweet! I use about that amount of oil as well and let it heat up in my cast iron skillet first- it will never stick when you do it that way. I’m making it for dinner this evening! And will wash it down with my southern sweet tea! Thanks for sharing! And by the way I’m a Georgia gal myself! Born and raised and cornbread and sweet tea is our staple!
...two tablespoons??🥺
My Arkansas born and bred parents and grandparents for that matter, probably didn't know what canola oil was; let alone cook with it. They kept a Cristo can on the back of the stove for collecting bacon and salt pork drippings. It aged like fine olive oil in that Cristo can and imparted the unforgettable taste, and velvety texture of my mother's cornbread, which I now prepare as well as my daughter.
Sorry but we didn't use bacon grease in our cornbread. My grandmother would fry fat back and that was the grease she used but I haven't been able to find that for a long time. I can't imagine bacon grease in cornbread. Ugh!!! I don't think that is a southern way of making cornbread. Have a great week!!
@@DebbieFoodPrepping
Trust me. It's much more Southern than canola oil will ever be...and with a proven generational track record.
@@DebbieFoodPrepping Lard is lard anyway you cut it. We used to kill a hog and render our own lard in a cast iron kettle over a wood fire. Just Sayin'.... that how we made it in rural Texas.
I tune in as often as I can 'cause you are always so uplifting.
Thanks
Flour??? No no no no no!!! REAL Southern cornbread doesn't use flour. White cornmeal (stone ground if possible), egg, butter, soda and full fat buttermilk. Also, use bacon fat in the skillet instead of canola. Thank you for not putting any damned sugar in it. I hate that stuff that folks call cornbread that is actually just glorified corn muffins/cake.
The flour adds body so it will not come apart in your mouth like a spoon of meal.
I’m 6 th southern generation and the family recipe includes 1 cup flour and 1 cup cornmeal, no sugar. Her recipe is spot on.
Maybe you like eating your cornbread with a big spoon, cause that is what will happen with out some flour in it. You sound like Yankee making comment like that.
Sorry, but NO! No flour. Mine comes out just fine (no spoon needed). The eggs hold it together no problem. Oh, and I've lived on the Gulf Coast (yeah, that's pretty damned SOUTH) for over 60 years. Bless your heart. It's CORN bread, not corn/wheat bread. That's how my Grandmaw made it, my Mom made it and how they taught me how to make it. If you want to put wheat in your cornbread, go right ahead, won't bother me none. Won't call ya names over it either... have a fine day.
@@gparish6766 Don't you know the difference between plain cornmeal and SELF RISING CORNMEAL??? How do you think your folks cooked it without adding flour?? Just kidding about Yankees because all southerners know about self rising corn meal, or I thought they did. Now you have a good day. We're not talking about Hush Puppies.
praise God..no sugar!!!!! ha.
how about honey &/or molasses?
Yes and Amen! ☺
You not a southern if you dont put sugar in the corn bread. Most southern do this depend what part of the south you from. Sweet corn bread and butter milk.
@@carolyngardner4999 Must be the part of South you from. South Carolina with one grandma from Georgia (and she was old, old school) no sugar.
@@carolyngardner4999 I never put sugar in my cornbread and I was born and raised in SC, which, if I'm not mistaken, sits squarely and firmly in the South.
Oh yeah!!! Love me some corn bread in cast iron skillet!!!
This is the cornbread recipe that I'm accustomed to using..Finally someone that knows how to make homemade cornbread!!!
thank you so much and we also eat milk and bread crumbled up in a bowl and we are from louisiana! lol thanks for real southern cornbread with no sugar! Milk and bread is delicious. my friends say it's gross but you and i know better. no butter milk but sweet milk or regular milk as it is better known as.
Exactly how my momma did it. Pour the grease inside the mix. Perfect!!
Now that's what I call cornbread. I like how you used the cast iron skillet to heat the oil. I also the sound it made when you poured the mixture in the skillet.
I agree with you...southern cornbread is not supposed to be sweet when you serve it with a meal like beans, etc. I also love to eat it with fresh milk (yummy!) This is a great recipe. Thank you!
I just made this...oh my is it amazing!!! Especially the outer crunch 🤤
Ohhhh thank you, I'm so glad you like it. It's the only way I know how to make cornbread and yes the crust is so good. Now you have to try it in a cup of milk. Just mash your cornbread up in a big cup and pour cold milk over it and eat it with a spoon. Yum yum yum!!! Have a great week!!!!
Yessss. Corn bread and milk is my favorite
I also like the bottom when it's good and crispy slap you some butter on there boy is that good
No sugar is the omly way!! Sweet cornbread is cake. What state is south to you? I was raised in East Tennessee. I wish I had seen your video before I made mine tonight. I haven't been cooking for real for years....I used to be able to cook.
I'm working to get the "feel" of it again. Something good for this pandemic...staying in and cooking. Thank you!!!
My southern state is North Carolina and West VA to the west. I used to cook a lot of prepared foods when I was married. Now I'm divorced for 20 years i cook like my grandma's did. Lol. Have a great week and thanks for commenting!!
@@DebbieFoodPrepping Divorced? You need someone to cook for, besides yourself.
Thank you for making it without sugar. Glass of cold buttermilk.
Real delicious looking cornbread. Are those garden grown tomatoes? Happy down-home cooking.
Looks delicious, but should have let it rest a little longer so it wouldn't have crumbled. I want to jump through the screen and eat it now anyway. Yum, yum, yum. I have altered the recipe a little bit. I made a sweet, spicy and salty version via jalapenos and bacon. Yum.
I like the sweet corn bread.
Your recipe for cornbread is pretty much like my grandma's. Instead of the oil she ( and therefore I ) used bacon drippings in the cast iron skillet. And don't even think about making cornbread in anything but a black cast iron skillet! You cannot get the mahogany brown crust on the bottom and sides of the bred in anything other than that good old black cast iron skillet and no southerner worth his salt would ever serve anemic cornbread to polite society!!!
Being a city kid, I was used to cornbread being made a different way, especially without the addition of baking soda. One holiday some elder relatives came up from the south to dinner. My mother's great aunt asked "where is the cornbread"? Mom hadn't made any. I was twelve or so and I remember watching both my parents from time to time make their versions of cornbread I guess the way they had been taught. So, I attempted it and lo and behold, the was very little baking powder left in the house. So, just on instinct I added some baking soda to the mix. When It was done, I presented it to the table. My mother's great aunt looked at it and asked "did you use baking soda:? I replied yes ma'am. She laughed and said "now that is real southern style cornbread". At that point, visiting the south almost every summer, I had never had their version of cornbread. To me, that addition of baking soda was just out of necessity so that the bread would rise. But my were they pleased about what I had brought to that table. I did notice that the baking soda gives a stronger aroma than just the kind made with baking powder only. Great recipe and great vid.
Buttermilk is like beer. It is an acquired taste. I love the stuff. Found your channel.
I don't drink it but I sure do cook with it. It definitely gives foods an amazing taste. Hope you will enjoy my channel. Happy New Year!!!
I love it in milk and a dash of salt. Black eye peas with juice over cornbread and/or greens over cornbread too.❤👍👍👍👍👍
❤ This Is Almost The Way I Cook My Cornbread Iy Looks So Good
California here, I heard that past the mason/dixon line the farther north the more sugar in the recipe pretty soon it ain't bread it's cake!
Real corn bread doe not have sugar, my grandma made johnny cake that be another story...I really love your recipe and your how to you tube it was like it was sitting in a chair by your table thankyou
Hello Debbie Great Video. I used to watch my mother and grandmother make cornbread. And this is exactly how they made it. Love it. I’m to subscribe if you don’t mind. So I can see what else you have. I wanted to ask how come you switched your oils. I’ve actually stopped buying olive oil because it’s so expensive and I’m not even sure which is real
Finally, someone who knows how to make cornbread, you brought a smile to my face when you talked about buttermilk and cornbread, my mother loved it.
You're not cookin unless you make a mess !'
It's so good in buttermilk with a bit of salt and a bit of pepper.
Oh my god I used to watch my great aunt eat cornbread in a glass of milk! I thought it was the craziest thing ever! Wow, so she wasn’t the only one! I was probably a young teen at the time.
You ain't tried it? Try it you'll like it.
Oh my goodness! That oil at the beginning! Thank you for sharing!
I made this today and it was good but I guess I added too much baking soda. 1 table spoon is what you said (I think) did you mean 1 teaspoon? Gonna try it again with less baking soda! I have been longing for good southern cornbread without sugar. Sweet cornbread is good but there is something special and reminiscent about this kind!!
Wow! Never knew it was so easy to make cornbread! Can't wait to try! :)
My mammaw did the buttermilk and cornbread all the time
Love it right out of oven with melting butter on it
Great looking cornbread. Best Wishes, jas from Mississippi
I put my skillet on the top of the stove. get skillet really hot. then put the oil in to get hot.
Thumbs up baby, this rocks,it's how my mama made it.
I add a glop of Dukes Mayonnaise into my cornbread. It turns out so moist.
My grandma used to use her bacon drippings for the corn bread! Other than that all is the same!!!! Yummmmm!
Thank you for sharing.
Good cornbread video, its like my mother-in-law makes. She calls hers sothern style also since it is not sweet. But both sides my family are from the south and they make it sweet. So not sure where it came from that the south did not sweeten their cornbread, but some of them did evedently. Thanks for posting I did enjoy it and I gave you the big thumbs up.
+Texas Style Cuisine The North makes sweet cornbread all the time.Every southerner I know does not.sweet cornbread tastes like cake.I do not like cake with the meal. After is ok
debbie greer you know Debbie I have heard that. Especially from my mother-in-law whos family is from Tennessee. My grandfathers family was from Alabama he was born in the 1899 and he ate sweet cornbread. Now his wife, my moms mom made sweet cornbread and she was a 1st generation immigrant from Germany. My other grand parents ate sweet cornbread also. Grandmas family history was Texas as far back as I know and he husband who was born in 1900 ate sweet cornbread and his family was from the south. Also if you look in the quartermaster cookbook has sugar in the recipe and it says to omit sugar for southern. I understand that must be the standard. But my family ate it sweet, but not as sweet as cake. My dad used to crumble up the left over cornbread into a glass and pour milk over it, ate it our of the glass with a spoon. I like sweet cornbread, but never turn down any kind cornbread sweet or unsweet, either way it is good stuff. Thanks for commenting on my comment my mother-in -law will be proud of you. lol have a great day.and I love that cornbread skillet. Mom used to have one like that, but her mom usually used cornstick pans. I still love those crispy corn shaped sticks.
I have never heard of adding vinguar to milk like that to make butter milk. Does it taste good? I love butter milk. I can't always find it where I live. Great video thanks for sharing.
Thomas Tommy Thanks for watching and your question about the vinegar. It's a known fact that mixing vinegar with milk with sour it like buttermilk. I've never tasted it because I wouldn't drink buttermilk but it sure works when you don't have buttermilk for a recipe. Have a wonderful day!
Just the cornbread should be, not sweet. Add pinto beans and about 1/2 dozen tamales and this Texas boy would love to sit and break bread with y all !!!😗
I've never had a tamale but you could bring those and I'd bring the other food and we'd have a feast for sure. You have a great week and thank you so much for commenting. :)
How do I get the recipe so I can put it in my recipe box?
Corn bread is great in sweet milk when it is still warm
Funny, I was just watching another channel on making corn bread and he mention 'Jiffy Mix' too. I love Jiffy Cornbread! I am doomed in the real corn bread world:-(
Modern buttermilk is not like the old fashioned kind. I am not crazy about the new kind either.
It's cultured and is sour, not sweet like real butter milk.
Me either, doesn’t even taste the same.
THANKS !
I love cornbread and milk. I love buttermilk to cook with, but cannot not get buttermilk past my nose to drink it. I have tried many times, but, I just can't. I love it in biscuits ,pancakes ,waffles and other foods as long as I cook with it. I love the flavor it gives to foods when I cook . I also love cornbread in many ways and I grew up eating unsweetened corn bread. Sweet cornbread to me is corn cake, not corn bread. I like your corn bread recipe.
I am exactly like that. My grandparents and my dad always put their cornbread in buttermilk but I can't do it. It tastes and smells terrible. But I love love love cornbread and regular milk. 😋 Have a good week!!
Wow Yes My Grandmother who raised me always had a glass of cornbread NOT SWEET with a glass of buttermilk before bed I do not like sugar in mine I like plain cornbread with some sweet milk
Must try ,thank u for sharing,
If you want good crust as I do put your iron skillet on top of the stove with about 1/2 stick of butter let it heat while you make your mix when it gets hot sprinkle a little meal in the pan while you stir your mix just before you pour it in your pan add just a little hot water to you mix, pour it into you HOT skillet and let it fry for a couple minutes then put it in you hot oven. The best crust you ever ate. Any vegetable is better with cornbread, no sugar in my cornbread ever. There is a cafeteria close to my home that I would eat just for their cornbread and vegetables then one day they had sugar in the cornbread (yuk) do not ear there anymore.
Love me some cornbread, buttermilk, diced onion and black pepper!!! Yum...yum!!!
I like the very soft part of the cornbread I hope you make another cornbread recipe that is even better.
now i am hungry for ham and beans......hope you are happy! great vid. i have a young'en that would live on this!!
I could live off of cornbread and milk. Lol I just love my cornbread mashed up in a good cold glass of milk. Thanks for commenting. Oh I love cornbread with pinto beans and the bean juice over my cornbread. My grandmother called it "mush." :)
Also good with a cold glass of butter milk.
I have never used canola oil in cornbread.. but its nice to know you can .. I don't always have bacon grease handy.. so this is great.. thank you
I cook mine like this too...yum with butter and Karol.
that is how my mom use to make it,that looks delish!
Lol my grandmother ate cornbread with buttermilk I only like cornbread made with buttermilk I use your recipe to make mine
It definitely passes my eyeball test😅
Edit: Thanks, it turned out quite nice. I used regular milk with the vinegar trick also used one cup and a quarter of milk
(Since that was advised for cornbread on my bag of corn meal)
Anyways it fell right out of the pan 😁
That's great!
Debbie, I just found u on You Tube. I was looking for cornbread & cranberries dressing & I saw your Southern Cast Iron Corn Bread recipe. Thank you, now I know how my Dad's Mother made her corn bread that he loved so much. Thanks to YOU now I can cook more recipe like Grandma did. Your video are great. lol
What part of the south are you from? My grandpa is from Alabama, would this be similar? He said loved it as a kid with buttermilk.
Yes!!! This would be the exact cornbread recipe that he would eat. It isn't sweet and it is amazing with pinto beans. Give it a try...he will love it. :)
ThisWondrousWorld My grandfather ate his with buttermilk too! I like it with either milk. My grandmother made him what she called a "pone" of cornbread in her iron skillet every night. Real southern cornbread ain't got sugar in it! So glad to know others are carrying on these things!
i like warn to hot cornbread after i eat a meal i ll take the cornbread cumble it up put in a small med. size bowl pour cold buttermilk over the bread then eat it . it makes me feel not bloated no acid and just good i love this stuff.
I love it in milk but not buttermilk. Now my grandparents loved it with buttermilk. Have a good week!!
I love unsweetened corn bread
I have made a buttermilk plenty of times with milk and vinegar that it works as if it smells like let him out when you let us have about 5 minutes that's how I do mine but I'm doing everything that you do but I also know a lot of people don't know but I also put a big tablespoon of mayonnaise in my cornbread mix then it tastes great is very moist that's just like if I have to use a box cake which I hardly ever do but if I do I also use a tablespoon of mayonnaise heaping tablespoon and it has more of a homemade taste to it try it sometime. Why do you have to lose nothing you'll be surprised does the old trick from the south just like vinegar and milk
Cornbread and BUTTERMILK the only way to go.
That's the way I like to make my cornbread, in a cast iron skillet. I like to add a can of corn to mine too and use the liquid from the canned corn in place of some of the milk. I add a big spoonful of mayo to mine. It helps make it moist.
Just curious, what kind of cornmeal are you Using ? White ? Yellow ? What approx is the size of each kind?
U rock, thanks
