Six-figure debt + moving to a state with one of the highest cost of living indexes in the country = rough financial life
Agreed brother. They should pay it off before they move to save on interest.
The price of food is through the roof in Hawaii, for example.
@@adamtatusko Higher than NYC or any of the big cities in Commifornia??? A coworker of mine is moving to SF and they will be paying $2400 per month for less than 500 sqft. All this before you consider $3.50 per gallon gas and high taxes.
Mister Johnson Good thing they are using Dave's program!
Rice and Spam, Spam and rice.
These guys are about to go rent an ocean view high rise condo for sure.
benwhitnell 😆
You don't take "amazing" jobs in Hawaii to live like a hermit :o0
For sure
“Uh uh, ok, uh huh, ok”, she couldn’t wait to get off the phone. As soon as he said, “cheap apartment and second hand couch”, she was gone.... 😂
Sucks for people that are too good to live within their means
“What do you mean I can’t sip Starbucks from my porch overlooking the sea for the first 18 months?”
This is why Aloha means hello AND goodbye...
I’m from Hawaii and I couldn’t wait to get out, too expensive and lack of opportunity , I get why people wanna move there because of the scenery and ocean, but that gets old especially when your broke the majority of time, I live in Texas now, lower cost of living, high income job, be smart people
Hawaii is not that great.
My friend from high school was stationed in Hawaii. He hated it and said he felt claustrophobic.
Mac Neoh yep I don’t think people realize that it truly is an island and it’s not that big
Not much opportunity outside of tourism
Aloha Brother, what are you working on? There are plenty of opportunities on the state and remotely if you want to succeed.
I love Dave, but as an accountant I would appreciate him considering TAXES. The length of time he suggests to pay off debt is rarely ever plausible because Uncle Sam isn't going to wait for you to run him his check.
Johnny Five math isn’t simple if it’s wrong. It’s just...wrong.
I was thinking the same thing.... It's crazy that he is not accounting for taxes
Unless you're into tax evas...(cough cough) TAX PLANNING
uncle sam don't play with his $$$$
a lot of time they say after tax
I'm astonished at how amazed some folks are with basic math really?
I'm not. We have a math problem in this country (USA).
Montemex23 literally read that while chewing
@Montemex23 - Americans spend *way* more time playing with their phones than they do eating
@INFJ Mindset eh not totally true. I'm from the state consistently tank #48-#51 and there's plenty of us who graduated with pretty good scholarships. It's all about how you apply yourself. America has more of a laziness problem than an education problem
Why do I feel like this lady has absolutely no intention of moving to Hawaii and finding the cheapest place she can find and buy her furniture from a garage sale? LOL.
Bengta Hoffman Godda celebrate that 2 year anniversary and get a nice ocean view condo, new furniture, new car! Heck maybe even a mini vacation to American Samoa before hubby starts his new job.
Maybe because you are negative by nature?
@@pasoapasonails6052 not really. Most people when they start making decent money do not live like they are still broke. She is being realistic.
mac1bc they got that new money.
Good luck. She's blinded by the island life and how many Instagram pics she'll get out of it.
AddictedToSpeed OMG we made it, we are moving to HAWAII!!!!!
Girl- OMG OMG MOM AND DAD WE ARE MOVING TO HAWAII AHHH I’M SO EXCITED.
Parents- SWEETIE I’M SO HAPPY FOR YOU.

Freight Sales rep for 6 years here- your car shipping to Hawaii will cost more than 5K...... don’t do it! Listen to Dave, sell it!
TeacherPhilEnglish hey sorry for the late reply ! A standard 40 ft container to HI is going to be around $4K, but you’ll also need it pulled out of the port with a drayage company which could be $600-$1000, and then load it onto a moving truck because it isn’t going to a warehouse for distribution. You get 2 free hours to unload that trailer into the moving truck which would be a nightmare too, after that, there is detention pay, which is usually 35-$50 per hour. It’s just really expensive!
TeacherPhilEnglish yes sir, if you ever need any freight pricing or questions let me know, always glad to help! Thank you!
TeacherPhilEnglish you cant understand why people would bring more than a small backpack when moving? Hahaha what world do you live in.
OMG they are moving from a low cost state of *Iowa* to Hawaii the most expensive state🤯. I hope they make it 🙏
Iowa
Hawaii is the most expensive state ?
A31 Ya Dig one of the highest like Alaska. Everything is imported to the island. Almost like $6-$7 for a gallon of milk
Still not as expensive than California. Go see what the prices for rent in California's big cities are. You can't even live in a studio apartment In sf for under 3200 a month now.
SteelCity1981 yeah California particularly San Francisco, LA and Oakland are all more expensive then Honolulu. New York is more expensive to live in and Washington DC is one nobody talks about but is another very expensive place to live. Even more so than Honolulu. But Honolulu is crazy as well.
By all means, do not move to Hawaii! I'm born and raised here on Oahu and its rough. We do not work minimum wages either. I've been working as a licensed insurance agent for 5 years and my husband works for the Hawaii state Capitol with a combined household income of $90,000. Hawaii is very expensive; everything from food, utilities, to housing. My husband and I are on Baby Step #2 and we are slowly climbing out of student loan and consumer debt. We downsized to 1 vehicle and we carpool to work. If you're going to rent in Hawaii, it will most likely be a studio or 1 bedroom apt which if youre lucky will be at approx $1,200-$2,500 rent per month.
It is like all tourist trap communities.
@@emsnewssupkis6453I wouldn’t think so, a lot of locals call that home
Sometimes I forget we have Hawaii
what about Alaska?
G H 😆
How do you feel about Puerto Rico?
That way of thinking is what got you into debt. Lol 🤣
Sometimes I forget we have Svalbard. No taxes there though.
When dave hears "chiropractor" he starts to hold his head
The culture shock and sticker shock are gonna kill them. Most mainland folks can’t assimilate to our culture here and usually leave fairly quickly, and it’s not cheap to live here
The people I met who moved to Hawaii left after a few years because they could not fit into the social scene. They were miserable.
Tell me more about Hawaii, I am from usa
How do these people don't fit into the culture? Can you give us an example?
Personally I can't stand tropical places so I know I would hate Hawaii
Aloha Azzie I’m in Hawaii now for a few weeks. I think it would be difficult to fit in permanently but the people seem pleasant.
Hawaii the most expensive state ... good luck
salinas831100 🎯 $93k annual income is considered low income. Good luck living in Hawaii! Good thing the beach is free!
Have you heard of NY
fearlessreview yea .. Hawaii is still more expensive
@@fearlessreview NYC is expensive, but the whole state of NY isn't NYC
so this lady currently makes more in Iowa than her Husband is going to be making in Hawaii with a Chiropractic degree??? LoL
Chiropractic is that a real study?
@@iwillrateyou9375 Yes I watch chiropractor videos on RUclips on the time. People pay for it.
It's not the best medical specialty but it is a real career.
Chiropractors aren't real doctors. Literally anyone can be one long as you have the $$$ to shell out.
quackery. not a medical specialty
Cost of living in Hawaii is double the national average (and highest in the nation) so an 84k starting salary with a graduate degree there is really not great
I notice more and more of these videos are student loan related
I lived on Oahu 3 years. You can pay over 2,000 a month for a small two bedroom apartment. Cost of food and gas is astounding. Not to mention shipping your car and household stuff. It’s not a short trip. It took over a month for each to get there.
Anyone else binge watching Dave Ramsey student debt videos?
How are they going to pay off that debt in a state were milk is $10 a gallon. Bad advice Dave
Moving to Hawaii so soon could possibly be the worst financial decision of their lives.
They could get rid of this debt in 1-2 years if they stay in Iowa!
Investing Engineered 1?
Can we all agree to stop with these fantastical ideas about how quickly debt can be paid? They couldn’t do it in a year living in a dirt hole eating roadkill. Taxes, bills, food, transportation, etc
People do it all the time, if he’s getting his doctor of chiropractic in Iowa he probably goes to Palmer which means they live in the quad cities. Super cheap to live there (median income in Davenport is $44,000, so half of the population gets by on less than that). So with an effective tax rate of 25% you have $125,000 left after taxes, both people are working side hustles of $1,500-2,000/ month means you have an extra $36-48,000/ year to help live off of and you’re done in 13-14 months. Won’t be easy but it’s definitely doable if you don’t listen to the whiners on the internet telling you it can’t be done.
benwhitnell Yessss!
Idk about 1-2 years, we aren’t factoring in how much they spend on food, transportation, entertainment, etc.
Joey McMahon Jr look at the math I laid out. You have 36-48,000 to handle that. (Helpful hint: the entertainment budget is “Nothing”)
My husband was born and raised in Hawaii and he won't even move back. They are going to hate it. It's like moving to L.A. on a postage stamp.
Yes, that is accurate!
7k a month in Hawaii is hardly anything compared to the mainland, especially Iowa
When she said she was moving in March....yikes....something tells me they didn’t, or couldn’t.
Can't they hold off on moving to a very expensive area until their student loans are gone???? 🤷♂️🤔
I paid off 65k of student loans in 3 years... to pierce through the interest of $500 a month it took $750 in gross income... just to touch the principal.
It took me roughly $105,000 in income to pay off $65,000 and that was with aggressive, rice and beans, dedicated, hateful, bitter repayment. It was worth it in the end but do not underestimate what it’s actually going to take to repay it.
Chiropractic is on the same level as naturopaths and psychic reading where im from
Where you from? Reality? 😂
Matthew, anyone whose a Physicians kid or family of Physicians will never acknowledge a Chiropractor as a Dr. of any kind.
Its funny though cause all the chiropractors ive been to look like D1 athletes while most “real doctors” look like theyre gunna tell me to get out of their swamp lol
Ed that’s right. Now who do you want treating a tricky issue? Book nerd hunched over from intense study or Brett, who is a “doctor”?
patty109109 probabaly brett cause i dont want to be treated by a NERD
Dave: “Living in $70k per year, you’ll have that debt paid off in 18 months!”
Her: “...Really?”
Clearly, she hasn’t done any math before this show.
Did Dave look at the taxes?
Dave is looking at gross and not net salary
tired of people just looking at gross salary
I’ve heard there’s a Catholic Church in Hawaii that when you walk through the main entrance your student loan debt is forgiven
Hahaha
@@Mimi-gx9lv yup. Look it up
And the tsunamis that hit Hawaii is really just holy water
The Movie Dogma
The entire State of Hawaii is expensive. Hawaii’s an island, no room for growth. Average pay is much lower than Bay Area/California and everything Everything is imported. No big corporations, maybe Hawaiian Airlines is the largest. And it’s difficult for small businesses. My 2 cents; I’m born and raise Oahu and my husband is from San Jose. Best of luck to them!
Hawaii Min Wage: $10.10
San Jose Min Wage: $15.25
Dave Ramsey has a good job because he's one of the few Americans that can still add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
I like Dave, but for a guy who is good at math never takes taxes in to consideration. 🤔
LOL true 😂
Why is everyone calling in as a chiropractor..
As someone who works in payroll that 170k is not going to feel like 170k once taxes are taken out. Even if the elect married with 2 on their W4 but good luck. Hawaii is nice to visit but expensive to live there.
They are going to live in the HOOD and will be using public transit. Hawaii is ROUGH a for poor people.
As a person who has lived in LA, Chicago, Bay Area, Indiana, New Jersey , Toronto in the past 10 years and moving again in dec to nyc due to work, unless you own really expensive items, just sell furniture, car, tv etc and move. Way cheaper that way.
However I would live in a cheap place with decent salary over expensive place with slightly more salary. She is excited due to opportunity to live in Hawaii and I don’t blame her, I am sure many would be, but they are just married for two years, once the family grows and they plan on buying a house in Hawaii, I think they will call Dave again about what they should do because things are expensive. It’s not that bank won’t give them loan but I would rather not have a million dollar loan over my head.
That’s just my opinion, different strokes for different folks. When someone asks me what is the best place I have lived so far, it is without a doubt Indiana, pace of life is slow and real estate is dirt cheap, I was able to save fixed 1K per month on just housing since I moved from San Fran at that time.
Born and raised in NJ, still here. It’s getting outrageously expensive here. That’s all of NJ, not just closer to the city like Hoboken, etc.
Joey McMahon Jr Agreed that’s why as an update I convinced my boss for my move to Dallas rather than NY and he finally agreed and we moved to Plano in Dec.
Salary remains same and when I calculated savings vs living in East coast, I will be saving 1500 fixed cash with no state tax and cheaper housing. Being married with a child, I have no desire for a NY city life. I would rather save money and have more space for my family to grow. But that’s just me.
Heartily agree about Indiana! I'm a Purdue - West Lafayette graduate (originally from Chicago), and my folks retired to IU-Country in Bloomington....they love it immensely, and their housing is nice and incredibly affordable on their retirement income.
HI is behind CA in terms of highest living expenses. Good luck to both of them.
it's higher in HI when you consider there are outlying cheaper areas to super commute in california from the core cities. so many folks do it to save housing expense. simply not a possibility in HI because only so far you can go before hitting the ocean.
I really don’t think they should move to Hawaii. I live in Hawaii and 90,000 is considered low income. They would have a bigger “shovel” if they found jobs in Iowa. Many people move here, find out how hard it is and then want to move right back.
"So what will he be making at his amazing job?"
Dave can already smell the BS from miles away. 🤣🤣
Umm what about income tax ? 170k is about 120k take home . It’s still a big shovel but with living expenses a realistic payoff date is more like 2 years
Thank you for stating that. I feel like Dave skips that part often.
Still not a long time if they live way beneath their means which is probably not likely in Hawaii. I would pay off the debt in Iowa and then move later.
We lived in Hawaii. Housing was 3 times the cost on the mainland; food double; gas double.
Cost of living in Hawaii sucks tho
TAXES DAVID TAXES
He doesnt have time to memorize the tax rates for each state. Some states have income tax, some dont.
This bothers me so much. He always goes like "minus some taxes" when in some states in could be minus 40% in taxes. At that point his math just doesn't check out anymore.
It would help if the caller provided take home pay amounts since it varies state to state maybe... some do. After tax, insurance, retirement, etc. take home pay certainly takes a hit.
@@JK20239 But every state has federal taxes
Fly Southwest so you can get two free checked bags. They fly to Hawaii now
Dave needs to work on his math considering taxes. I would tend to take jobs in Iowa where cost of living is understood, then in a couple years evaluate a different location.
We in Hawaii have some of the highest income taxes in the country too.
This was not realistic advice. They are not going to be able to live on 70,000 a year in Hawaii.
It is possible, but they will not be living in a nice area.
They should be able to. After all, there are tons of residents in Hawaii who work fast food, or at wal mart, etc. They obviously don’t make 70k. However, I don’t think the caller will have 70k after taxes. Dave doesn’t calculate those in lol
Adam Minnix Most people who work the lower paying jobs live with family. Multi generational housing is a huge thing.
Listening to the call helps a little.
@@adamtatusko That's exactly what I was about to say. They wont take home $170k.
Dave is losing it man. Totally ignoring taxes, cost of move etc. that’s just irresponsible to lay down the numbers like that. Absolute crazy talk.
Also, she didn't say how much she'll be making there. So no clue where he got the 170k per year figure.
@@Zoldidi She mentioned earlier ehat her salary is now & moving with same co. so Dave is using current salary
Dave really needs to delete this video. He is setting himself up for potential liability giving outright false information.
@@oldtwinsna8347 *it's. a. radio. show 🤣* Oh my lord, Dave is not YOUR personal accountant, life planner.. Relax 😂 he gives you FREE advice.. take it or leave it 🙄😂
And the cost of living, hawaii is the most expensive state 😵
I've been to Hawaii and it's expensive! Food in the grocery store is double the average price of what you would pay on the mainland. These people are going to hate their level of debt even more while the cost of living is draining their income out there.
i would just add when you move to a new place, especially a really really fun area, you don't have to spend much on entertainment. there's literally new, exciting stuff everywhere just by walking out the door. they can have an awesome fun time for dirt cheap!
I currently live In Hawai'i. Oahu for 6 months and now Maui for coming up on a year. Oahu there is more opportunity overall. You are going to have a great life there.
Look into buying used resort furniture. That's what I have in my ohana. It's sturdy, useful, good-looking and cheap
Dave seems to always ignore taxes. This debt payoff plan will not be as easy as he made it sound. It's going to take work.
Every time I watch one of these, you sound like Paul Harvey, and I'm anticipating "And now .... the rest of the story"
Oh Chiropractic School. What a surprise!
Student loan crisis is Crazy!!! I feel bad for young couples, young families that are in these situations. I’m so grateful that my hubby works for the Railroad and he makes a little over $100k and had $0 student loan debt because he didn’t go to college. We live in So. Cal, we’re debt free, we live below our means, we’re on a budget and living very comfortably and content . There are jobs out there that still pays great if you’re willing to work HARD, (physically😬) and you don’t need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a degree!!! It is POSSIBLE!!!
Good luck to her. I’m from Hawaii and my husband and I moved away from Hawaii to Indiana because the cost of living is so expensive. 170k a year won’t go far for housing either...they’ll be lucky to find an affordable apartment.
Let's assume they do earn $170,000 a year in Hawaii that would be a take home of about $9,500 give or take a month after all the wage taxes are taken out of their paychecks. Dave says they will have their student loans paid off in 18 months, that leaves them with $2000 a month give or take to pay their housing expenses, food, gas, car, insurance, and any other expenses. So many unknowns here, but 18 months to student loan free is extremely optimistic on Dave's part. I would say at least three years.
Girl- OMG OMG MOM AND DAD WE ARE MOVING TO HAWAII! AHHH I’M SO EXCITED. THE VIEW WILL BE AMAZING.
Parents- SWEETIE, I’M SO HAPPY FOR YOU.

We’re homeless...
Ha
Dave, they're not only buying the nice place but they're also buying a convertible. Good luck lady.
I am patiently waiting for their call to Dave for help in 2-3 years.
They’re not gonna do it. They’re gonna live good for the Instagram pictures
A great time to adopt the minimalist lifestyle
I did somewhat the same thing moving to Cali, but I only have 30k in debt and I barely spend a dime.
Haven't watched yet but judging from the title Dave is about to go in
I get it maybe Iowa is boring but other states that are nice and not nearly as expensive.
Are these not live anymore on RUclips?
I would set a decent budget for the move. I would sell everything and buy furniture when I got there. Lol, not used furniture though.
Yikes. The cost of living in Hawaii is so high!!!! Enjoy island life.
Hawai’i is very expensive. The Big Island is the only reasonable place to buy land the other islands are very expensive ( rent & mortgage). Food here is expensive. Jobs are available in Maui, Kauai, & Oahu. There’s jobs in Kona but rent average is easy $1,200. For a studio.
Good luck to her. She’s going to need it.
1:38 Dave thinks housing expense in Hawaii will MAYBE be double that of Iowa. LOL. Try five times as expensive.
$7000 a month is $84k a year... that’s trash in Hawaii
How did the March move go? How's Hawaii?
DAVE COME ON
THAT ISLAND IS ALMOST TGE MOST EXPENCIVE PKACE TO LIVE!!!
It would also take an expensive tutor to teach you how to spell correctly.
Why do you constantly hang up on callers while you are still talking to them. Do you ever properly end a call?
It’s radio. That’s how it is.
when i start making that 6 figure salary i will definitely live somewhere affordable and only VISIT places like hawaii and alaska and california for vacation. just because these places are tourist spots does not mean go pack everything and live there. goodluck to this lady and her family
Uhhhh no. Hawaii is so crazy expensive! Went there for my honeymoon and it was like $6.00 just for a load of bread. Better off just going there for a vacation and getting a chiropractor job somewhere else where their quality of life will be better.
Unrealistic... let’s not forget taxes, insurance/benefits, and living in Hawaii they are going to live it up for awhile. I wish them the best
Do any of these examples take into account taxes? If they only make it 170,000 a year, after taxes will be a little over $100,000? They are really not taking 100,000 towards your debt, and living on $70,000. That’s all bogus.
I say 4 years. Live on 50k and throw 50 at the debt.
You don't ever put debt and moving to Hawaii (or anywhere on the west coast, midwest or New England) in the same sentence together.
Soon as heard chiropractor he put his head down lol
While briefly forgetting he was being filmed and then put his head back up 🤣
Why does Dave assume that this woman can replicate her $90k job in Hawaii? We don’t even know what she does. That is a bold assumption.
The most surprising thing from this call was Dave didn't say bean and rice, rice ans beans. 😂😂
I’d have to disagree with Dave on the cost of living in Hawaii. Housing is going to be anywhere from 2k-3k a month. Food is three times more expensive than anywhere in Iowa, and taxes are outrageous. Goodluck.
I normally dont like dave ramsey but this was a solid video
Okay I was missing something.. I though she said $7k a week 😂 had to rewind
From the KNOWN
To the UNKNOWN
It’s expensive out here on Oahu trust me 🤣🤣🤣🤣
84,000 a year for chiropractor lol 5-7 years in college hopefully he likes his career that’s pretty wack for a D.C Degree
In Hawaii..they have furnished places
Come on Dave, don't forget the taxes!
I love the way he said you broke and stupid things lol 😀
Born and raised in Hawaii now live in Texas , and you still couldn’t convince me to go back there, it’s meant for tourists
I live in Hawaii and let me tell you its expensive here. A studio here is about $1,500. Milk is almost $10. Gas is about $4.00/gal. Traffic is bad. Dont do it! Lol
How do you have that much debt to make $84k a year? Chiropractor school is a joke.
Why didn’t he mention tax when budgeting? They won’t have $170k income. They’ll have $140k left after tax
I wonder if they even made it, March of 2020 was not a good time to be moving or looking for jobs
Ramsey scenarios for paying off debt are way off.
Do NOT buy used furniture in Hawaii. Bedbugs and roaches are rampant no matter how clean people are.
We want to learn to surf so we're moving to Alaska.
"I need encouragement because my total debt is way less than what I'll be making in one year." Okie dokie.
