The Gaston is named after Gaston Rèbuffat. He displayed the technique for climbing off widths in the book ‘On Rock and Snow’. The position was described as pulling on either side of the off width like pulling elevator doors open. So Magnus was pretty much on point with his guess. It was a guy named Gaston.

In France, my kids, who are in junior high school and high school, do climbing as part of their allocated sport hours. It's one of the couple of disciplines they will do throughout the year. This was definitively not the case when I was a kid. Not sure how widespread it is but it is obvious that pretty much every school sport hall has a climbing wall now.

I think it's more complicated than that, maybe France has a good background when it comes to climning, but for me those who have the chance to experience it from a young age, it's not specifically from school. For a good part, yes we have the chance to practice climbing during our school years (for those who have it for the longest time it is during college / lycée which I think is equivalent to secondary school, but even this long was rare a few years ago). But unfortunatley in a way those years will make a lot of people afraid of it: it's an obligation, it's for the grades, teachers most often do not really like it and are not interested by this sport. For example I had it as part of my allocated sport hours only from when I was like 15 to 17-18, and I know that most of my friendss didn't really liked it / were afraid of it. So we do not have the chance to practice it from a young age as I see it / experienced it during my scholarity. Maybe it's just that this sport is really becoming more and more populair in France since a few years, and we have some good climbing / bouldering gyms. But for the few years that I practiced it during my scholarity, it was far from being one of the most popular sports (even most for bouldering which I never saw during those years). When it comes to extracurricular activities, maybe we have more opportunities than others, I couldn't tell. But even then, you need to get the chance to try it and have people push you toward this sport.

Je pense qu'il ne faut pas trop se fier aux cotation c'est ce que veut nous dire les couleurs
c'est plus un ordre d'idée, que significatif d'un vrai niveau

Quite a few gym manage to be "the biggest" by some metric. Biggest in surface total, biggest in meter of walls, biggest in volume, highest, biggest in number of routes ...
Hard to tell is it's really THE biggest one. But it sure is impressive.

Thanks for this video ! I climb at « climb up » since the beginning of my journey in Climbing.
It’s very reassuring to see that even you, can struggle on lower grades boulder.
I never climbed in a gym where we can see the actual grades of the boulder, and I always thought that climbing purple/red boulders was very weak compare to boulders that you do in others countries.
With this video I finally can see your thoughts on French boulders. Thank you for that !

The gaston technique is named after the French climber Gaston Rébuffat. In the book On Snow and Rock, Gaston shows a climbing technique to climb offwidths “by pulling them apart” (just like pulling apart elevator doors!). This offwidth climbing technique is where the gaston move got its name.

In terms of boulders, I think there are others gyms that have more problems.
Climb-Up Aubervilliers has about 16~18 boulders per color, with 7 colors.
The Arkose Nation Gym has 24+ boulders of each color with 6 colors.
Where Climb-Up Aubervilliers really shines, it's with the rope-climbing, with the highest count of all gyms in Paris (I think)
It is with both together, that it becomes the biggest gym.

Climb Up Porte d'Italie has the biggest amount of boulder problems, and a spray wall with a 45 degrees incline.

    • @OneDreams54

@@xigoute4173 "Y'a rien a arkose nation par rapport à Aubervilliers" --> Juste 45 blocs de plus ? Même si les codes couleurs sont différents.
(Only 45 more boulders ? Even if color codes are different.)
Comme quelqu'un d'autre l'a dit, le plus important, ça serait Climb'Up Porte d'Italie en terme de Bloc. Avec un Total de plus de 250.
(As someone else said, the biggest for boulders would be Climb'Up Porte d'Italie. With a total over 250.)
Pour revenir à Aubervillier et Nation :
(To go back to Aubervillier and Nation :)
      Climb'Up Aubervilliers : 105 blocs au total.
      - 14 Jaunes (Yellow)
      - 14 Verts (Green)
      - 16 Bleus (Blue)
      - 18 Violets (Purple)
      - 16 Rouges (Red)
      - 16 Blancs (White)
      - 8 Noirs (Black)
Arkose Nation : 150 Blocs total.
      - 24 Jaunes (Yellow)
      - 24 Verts (Green)
      - 26 Bleus (Blue)
      - 26 Rouges (Red)
      - 26 Noirs (Black)
      - 24 Violets (Purple)
La seule raison qu'Aubervilliers est plus grand, c'est l'escalade en voie.
(The only reason Aubervilliers is bigger, would be thanks to the Rope-climbing routes.)
