A book I’d recommend is “How to Befriend Gigantic Bats“ by Margaret Elizabeth Peterson-Mitchell. You may need that set of skills sooner than you think.

I found out on new years day that my house is being foreclosed on the 26th of this month. Through the stress of packing all my belongings I'm still finding time to learn how to code in 2 separate languages (JavaScript & python if y'all were interested). I am too determined to make 2021 my turning point in life, the time where I can finally get over the rut I've been in since 2014. I hope I remember this comment a year from now to leave an update on how the year treated me. I hope you reading this can find a way through you problems this year as well. Just remember there is always more history to be made, you just have to fight your battles to see the change.
I lost everything in the *last* recession. Trust me, life gets better, and you won't get caught unprepared again. There's nothing to focus you on your personal finances like not having any.
I’ve personally found the “X number of books in a month” goal to be largely counterproductive. It can lead to putting pressure on yourself to read simply to get through the book, rather than read to understand, contemplate and expand your thinking. To help combat this, I set myself a goal of reading 10 pages a day. It’s bite-sized enough that it’s easily achieved, and also removes the time pressure to say I “finished” a book by an arbitrary deadline. Best of luck with all your 2021 goals, Matt!
I like the page goal idea but as I have books of various page sizes and content complexities I set a daily time per day I would prefer to be reading. Even going to far as to say that the time doesn’t have to be for the same book. As I am currently taking a break from college but will still be engaged in textbooks so that I don’t loose everything I have learned and am more motivated to start back time per day makes more sense for me. As ten pages in a textbook is time equivalent to almost 30 or more in a novel once again depending on topic and complexity. But I have been more successful breaking my yearly reading goal into time per day than t a set time per book and would the same for pages per day.
I try to read 10-20 minutes a day. That way if I’m reading something challenging it doesn’t give me pressure to read a certain amount and gives me room to read more if I want. But it also makes me push a bit if I’m reading a section I’m not thrilled with.
Just finished that book, and I gotta say, I feel very inspired and I have been trying to build new positive habits and break old bad habits. So far, I think I am progressing, but not perfect yet, and just as the book says: Ease into new habits. Point being: It works really nicely.

One of my favourite memories of Australia was standing in Sydney botanic garden on new years eve, dusk, waiting for the fireworks displays, and flying over me was hundreds of fruit bat's. It was awesome.
Hi Matt. I actually started doing something very similar to this after watching your 'Tiny Changes W/ Big Results' upload. I opted to read every day, whether it be a paragraph (some days!) or hours on end. At the end of each year I look back at the amount I've read and it amazes me how such a little change to my day can have a big effect at the end of a year. Thanks.
I am just rereading “Atomic Habits” by James Clear, that I originally read 2 years ago. I do want to refresh my habit attempts, but I also see how it all boils into one, in terms of behavioral economics, cognitive biases, behavior change, and obviously habit formation. A super huge recommendation for the book.
Hey Matt, I also want to focus on the habit of reading this year and signed up to goodreads which seems to be a great app to see what I‘ve accomplished so far. Really helps me to keep going! You can build groups with your friends and update eachother on your process which is quite cool! Maybe this is something for you as well? Would love to see what you are reading to get some inspiration myself!!
That feeling when you’ve decided to read more this year and then watched the video of one of your favourite bloggers who thinks the same and helped to set a goal ☺️🙏
You got me started on habits about 18 months ago and now I meditate, take a cold shower, exercise, read, eat healthily every day. This year I’m reducing the time I spend watching TV and using it for more useful things. Hope you love Sydney, perhaps you need to try and reframe how you view the bats, learn about them and watch their behaviours. We can switch what we think of things!
The pandemic is actually an absolutely great time for meditation - at least for me. I used the opportunity to progress towards at least 2 hours daily, and it has been amazing thus far =)
I've definitely been spending more time reading self development books with all this extra time being stuck indoors. It's always hard to find the positive in a negative situation, but investing in yourself will always pay dividends in the future. I can't wait to see what future content you make in Australia Matt!
self development books helped me so much, good choice! Also, I have found reading into the psychology behind it all helped me to understand why we want to be unproductive and how to train our brain. Recommend "Thinking Fast and Slow"
The best way I've found the ability to form these habits is just initially doing that thing every day. Doesn't matter how many pages I read or how much I write in my journal, it's all about building a habit of turning up. After a few weeks, the habit forms and there's a lot less resistance to sitting down and proceeding with the task ... it's no longer a burden and becomes a joy. From there on, it's much easier to build on the habit and do more of it consistently. And above all, your goal should not be the end goal but the process of the goal. So instead of saying "I'm going to run a marathon in a year", say to yourself "I'm going to run for at least 10 minutes every other day" ... as time goes on and you proceed with this, running a marathon seems a lot more reachable.
Matt, you really have such a sunshine personality. I really had a sh*** day and was all wrapped up in Covid anxiety but you made me smile and see the happy sides of life instantly. Keep doing what you're doing, there's a reason your channel grew so fast! Greets from a german university student! :)

Most Australians thinking, "That bat is a pretty small one" Its a fruit bat and they are harmless :) My goals this year: Also read 30-52 books (2 books down) Gym at least 4 times a week. Sleep before 10pm every night
I absolutely love that book. Like, the idea ist brilliant. The storytelling marvelous. I don´t know about the englisch version, but the german was one hell of a book.
I've been subscribed to your channel since I was maybe in highschool and i think your videos are sort of like rehab for my brain when I feel disoriented. I always come by ur channel, watch a few videos, make a plan for how I want to change/ improve and feel at ease so thanks for that!!
Those bats are harmless. It would be cool to have one of those bats as my neighbor. Edit: I wanted to flex how many books I read in 2020... it was 300 books.
After interviewing John Lee Dumas on my podcast, I found out that mornings are the most productive time to work on our goals but we often spend it on answering emails, dealing with complaints, working on other people's needs and wants which is essentially"'other people's problem"
I relate to this video so much! I also used to be a big reader and lost my way. Making content every week, business building, raising a family all pushed reading to the back of my mind. I've gone from reading 30+ books a year to not reading anything last year. I decided to read for 30 minutes a day this year but I'm so going to steal the writing a list ahead of time. Thanks again Matt!
This is an excellent goal. I've been increasing the amount of books I read each year by 5. Last year I read 30....this year it's 35 (at least). Thanks for your videos, they are always so inspiring. All the best in 2021....and watch out for those bats! :)

I watch you from lebanon (so my english language not good) all what i want to say to you is : you make me another person and you give me better life❤️❤️
I've found also taking notes of the key parts of each chapter helps me retain it better it does require you to slow down more but I found it to be better for me actually learning and applying what I read versus trying to read a book every week and fill up on info I will probably forget.
Yey! Reading more is always a good goal. One thing we suggest though: if you start a book and don't enjoy it, put it down guilt free. So many people get caught on powering through a long, boring book. It's not like a 2-hour movie; reading a book could take a week's leisure time. If your current book doesn't pull you in, always move on to the next book so you can hold on to your excitement for reading.
Definitely struggle with this. I always try to finish books and this results in me not picking it up ever again because I just wasn't into it. But of course I can't start a new one without having finished the other one 🙄 We should read because we enjoy it!
Usually fantasy novels, but recently read A Man Called Ove which I LOVED. So honestly no one genre, but generally anything with a relatable character and humour. That was the first book in years that I picked up and didn't put down until I finished. Recommended to anyone reading this comment lol

So many people talking about reading more has been very inspiring! Please share your thoughts on your favorite books!
Shantaram you can check it out great book cheers

I am just rereading “Atomic Habits” by James Clear, that I originally read 2 years ago. I do want to refresh my habit attempts, but I also see how it all boils into one, in terms of behavioral economics, cognitive biases, behavior change, and obviously habit formation. A super huge recommendation for the book.
Same here! What an amazing book
I LOVE reading and I wish there would be more people I could share this passion and ideas with!
Thank you Matt for inspiring me to start my own RUclips channel!❤️
Me too

Hey Matt,
I also want to focus on the habit of reading this year and signed up to goodreads which seems to be a great app to see what I‘ve accomplished so far. Really helps me to keep going! You can build groups with your friends and update eachother on your process which is quite cool! Maybe this is something for you as well? Would love to see what you are reading to get some inspiration myself!!
did a ctrl+f of goodreads to see if someone had said it too, the annual reading challenge worked great for me, i went from 16 to 36 in like 5 years
Same! I love Goodreads!
POV: you’re binge watching productivity videos, which is making you unproductive...
No I am watching this while exercising
No,I watched this after working for straight 5 hours.

2 hours that's really awesome

There is nothing more attractive than confidence, once you see your own beauty, so will everyone else
Sapiens is a masterpiece! chenged my veiw on a lot of history and even todays social structures. great read!
What do you mean?! Bats are adorable
Shore
Agreed!!
Thank you 🙏
Some idiot read adorable as edible and here we are.
Yep! I have two disabled bats as pets, though they are around 30 gram
“So, here’s Matt’s 2020 rules for reading.” 2020 is gone, brother. Let it go.
My word for the year is "imperfect" so I let this mistake slide :)
@@mattdavella Haha! Aren't we all :) Just messin' anyway, my guy. Your videos are always so helpful. We appreciate all you do!
And good luck with the bats! 😮
I love your content on how realistic is your self help videos, its diffrent with some random youtubers that exaggerated the way they actually did in reality. Thanks one more Matt, you're the game changer
thanks for this video. it actually tells us (who are struggling with habits) step by step specific structure on how to actually achieve it unlike many others who just tell us everything so vaguely which gets so repetitive and annoying. i appreciate that you just get to the point. thank you matt!
Don't worry about the huge bats, they mainly eat fruits and are only active during the day 😂
This guy is gonna whittle himself into a finite salt and just fly away like dust in the wind - that's how efficient this dude is
As a zoologist, living that close to those bats would be my dream
Bruh, how do you make every setting you shoot look so nice? I am always amazed at the quality of your videos!
Dare to Lead is a FANTASTIC book. Brené Brown makes some excellent points and I think you'll really enjoy it.
New slogan for 2021: “Now it’s our turn to do the nut-kicking.”
Most Australians thinking, "That bat is a pretty small one"
Its a fruit bat and they are harmless :)
My goals this year: Also read 30-52 books (2 books down)
Gym at least 4 times a week.
Sleep before 10pm every night
My goal: One chapter a night. One rule: Pick book with very short chapters. Current book: The Book Thief.
Great book!! I'm currently reading the Bridge of Clay, also by Zusak.
Your video inspired me to read again!!! And a couple of books per month isn’t overwhelming and it becomes a pleasure instead of a duty. Thanks!!!
"Going FOH-ward," to me, is one of his trademark pronunciations that you just need to wait for. Can't wait for Matt's Australian accent to kick in.
Those bats are harmless. It would be cool to have one of those bats as my neighbor.
Edit: I wanted to flex how many books I read in 2020... it was 300 books.
Wow! Do you have a list on Good reads?
children books?
"Did he just say he loved us?" Literally what I asked myself the second he said it lmao
After interviewing John Lee Dumas on my podcast, I found out that mornings are the most productive time to work on our goals but we often spend it on answering emails, dealing with complaints, working on other people's needs and wants which is essentially"'other people's problem"
Watched that video on your channel, Hala! Very insightful
Recently started Ego Is the Enemy, such a great read so far. The War of Art is next on my list!
LMAO ... Matt opens door “UGH NOPE” **slams door”
Same, Matt, same !
I'm currently reading sapiens, definitely recommend!
This is an excellent goal. I've been increasing the amount of books I read each year by 5. Last year I read 30....this year it's 35 (at least). Thanks for your videos, they are always so inspiring. All the best in 2021....and watch out for those bats! :)

Everybody has one special habit he/she is trying to build up something his heart has been aspiring for,as for me am trying to build my habit of Investing putting in some money in something that will yield profits in return am not gonna live on pay check forever 😔😔😔 am just saying tho
I think the pandemic has taught people the importance of multiple steams of income unfortunately having a job doesn't mean security
Investing in crytpo now is an essence to financial freedom and stability take a look at what bitcoin is doing now it's keeps rising and rising the pump is massive and the rise or fall of economy has nothing to do with bitcoin
I learnt the value of Investing during the first lockdown i invested $2000 in a legitbitcoin brokers platform during the lockdown and got $9000 as returns
No 1. Don't only hope on government innervation on economy growth
No2. As an individual look for different self business and trade not only waiting on betterment of stock market activities
No3: most important always save the little you can and think of what to do with it when it becomes good capital
Because the government has failed us in aspect of economic activities and other trading system

Sapiens - is my favorite. You will like it.
Australian fruit bats or flying foxes are pretty cute in fact.
Ironically, he has written 'trying' in his video title! 🤭
Still, every minute of your video is valuable! 👍
Intro: "Great job at body slamming Covid..."
2 Seconds Later: "World's largest bat."
Yeah, that's tough. What kind of things do you like to read?
Usually fantasy novels, but recently read A Man Called Ove which I LOVED. So honestly no one genre, but generally anything with a relatable character and humour. That was the first book in years that I picked up and didn't put down until I finished. Recommended to anyone reading this comment lol
@@kimberlyallan1671 I've heard good things about A Man Called Ove, but it hasn't yet jumped up to my TBR list just because I don't read a lot of realistic fiction. But with that review, maybe I'll check it out from the library, thanks!
I'm absolutely ready to kick 2021 in the nuts! As long as Matt's videos and films exist I'm ready for anything really
