  • Huntsman arrows don't have a giant size. Unlike grenades, they aren't simulated with VPhysics. Arrows actually have a size of 1×1×1 units³.
    Like other projectiles, arrows use a player's bounding box instead of their hitboxes for collision detection.
    Upon intersecting with a player's bounding box, the game tries to attach the arrow to the player model. It tries to figure out which body part it should be attached to.
    A raytrace is performed using the arrow's position and velocity at the point of impact, and when it intersects with a hitbox then the arrow is attached to that.
    Otherwise, the game loops through all of the player's hitboxes. For each of them, a raytrace is performed from the arrow to their centre, getting the distance until intersection. The arrow is attached to the one with the shortest resulting distance.
    If the arrow is attached to the head hitbox, then it's considered a headshot.
    So if an arrow hits the very corner of a player's bounding box and the hitbox that's closest to the corner is the head hitbox, then that's a headshot. But if the player is performing an animation like the medic call so the hand hitbox is closest to the corner, then that's a handshot.
    (If the arrows in the video seem to appear with a slight delay, then that's because I forgot to change my interp setting from 60.6 ms to 15.2 ms before recording.)

    this explains why it's impossible to headshot anyone during end of round, it's because of hands that are raised up and closer to hitbox

      @@sirdbird7292 yes, but the thing is that shooting near the head isn't guaranteed to be a headshot depending on the target's animation. To quote the description: "if an arrow hits the very corner of a player's bounding box and the hitbox that's closest to the corner is the head hitbox, then that's a headshot.       @@load-bearingcoconut5586 Oh yes, that is true, but like you explained in your comment, when doing an animation like the "medic" call the players hand will move between the arrow and the head. The arrow is no longer on target with the head, and now you're shooting near the hand or arm.
      I personally do not see a problem with the arrow striking the arm instead of the head specifically when the arm is swinging in front of the head. If the head is exposed and you shoot near it - headshot. If the head is not exposed and you shoot near it - no headshot. That makes sense

    So does this mean that your class and weapon (how your arms are positioned holding that weapon) defines how big of an advantage or a disadvantage you have against a huntsman sniper?
    The first thing that pops into my head is a heavy with fists having his hands in front of him, meaning the arrow ray trace will likely hit those first in most cases, as well as the scout having his head leaned slightly forward, meaning the area in front the bounding box which is closest to the head might be bigger compared to other classes.

      The headshots enter the head. You can tell by the sounds and the critical shots which ones are headshots and which ones are body shots. The body shots stay in the arm, that's why there are arrows there. (Pretty sure)

    Note to self: If i ever encounter a Huntsman Sniper, always try to facestab it if it has the Razorback. Or just shoot it from far away after the Sniper fires it's arrow

    While as absurd as this may look like I honestly always thought that the head hitbox was way bigger not because of how many times I got headshotted when it shoudn't have, but rather how hard it would be to hit one if the hitbox was actually accurate. Imagine having to predict where someone was going, calculating when your arrow would travel to said location while taking arrow drop into account, and hoping that you did all of these right and it hits a 3 inch box.     Understandable, if Huntsmen uses hitboxes instead of collision hull, then it'll, in my opinion, be the worst sniper primary, because it works like the Classic, but uses a projectile and deals less damage.

    For people that are confused and afraid and gathering pitchforks and torches, please continue cause this shit is ridiculous. But also read the description and realize although it’s backwards as fuck you can still reliably interpret the closest individual hitbox (the little ones that make up the body like a boxy skeleton) from where your arrow touched the bounding box (orange box in video) which is why the arrows shot to the left of the spy don’t hs, cause they technically connect to his arm since on that side of spy his arm is elevated a bit holding a gun. The arrow hs on the right of the spy because his arm was in a neutral position and the head was closer to where the arrow touched the bounding box. So at least it’s... predictable..?

    Fun fact: you can't head shot a player with the huntsman if their hands are near their head since the body shot takes priority even with a clear shot to the head for whatever reason, and such it's impossible to headshot a soldier from the front of him with an arrow while his primary is out since the rocket launchers make soldier put his hands close to his head and such stops a huntsman from hitting them in the head as the game puts it. This is the rare case where the arrow having a large hitbox is a bad idea

    i think the reason why it hit the head when firing at the spy's left elbow is because the Arrow have a giant Hitbox and it collide with the head hitbox first, therefore it register as a headshot.
    The spy's head hitbox seems to move depending on whatever weapon he's holding, when you fire at his head from behind, it instead register as his right arm means that his right arm's hitbox moved behind slightly enough for the arrow to collide with first.

    From what i can see in this vid alone
    The arrow, if it hits the basic projectile hitbox, will then trace a line to the closest body part, whichever is the closest it uses as the final result
    Saying it like that it makes sense, and it probably did while coding, but due to the fact that it starts from the first point where the arrow hits the hitbox, it means that the arrow COULD have hit the head, but since the hand was closer to the beggining of the hitbox, its hit instead
    So its probably possible to use a gesture that puts a hand or something out in front to cause the arrow to hit that over the head

    Maybe the game engine makes it hard for valve to improve it but idk any about programing :/
