I look up to you so much, I wish I was a tenth as smart as you are, so talented, I am trying to build a pedal board, need a delay and octave and I am done, watch all you videos, any good suggestions for a delay, gotta save up a bit, just got a tumnus deluxe and enjoy it a lot got a revv g4 and it is too much for me, thank you for teaching me new things.
They want to harvest your credit card details once they have your Email :-( so its not “Free”
I think that maybe 2020 maybe hasn't been your optimal year for making money so I so understand you taking on advertising
But it also breaks my heart because its takes that special something extra away from your show that our family loves so much
I also feel that I'm apart of the problem as I'm just starting out an can only afford the cheaper pedals that you have been so awesome to include in your videos as almost a hidden gen with in your videos.
I have watched all your videos and it seems a thing for you to include an affordable pedals in your videos
I have a list of them and honestly have bought all the pedals I own from your insight and even built three BYOC Pedals
Please keep up the amazing work you and your crew do
Thank you so much
Your channel and pedals rule.
I'm now inspired to start modding and building for my local musician friends.
Thanks!
We helped each other Josh! When I came up to visit your shop, you turned me on to your board manufacturer, and that launched a whole new era for Keeley! Thank You!
❤️❤️❤️
Mr. Keeley, Once upon a time... on one of my frequent training trips to Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center, you were so kind as to honor me with an offer to visit your skunk works, unfortunately adulation was disrupted by catastrophe as the world trajectory was forever changed. Hence, I would like to say that I am very pleased to see the focused fission of my two favorite companies have overlapped and continue to inspire. I thank you both.
@@glo2ube786 hey there!!! You know what, I can almost remember it too! I can remember that I coordinated to visit with a guy out at the FAA (that what I call that area ;-)
So, no more trips to OKC?!? Well if you’re ever riding Thumper around, we offer bike parking. You’ll dig the new, new, new shop!
@@RobertKeeleyTV This is why Keeley and JHS are always on my board. I love the support and comradery amongst the "boutique" brands.
@@reidd8334 want another great company? Look up Frantone. Fran is legendary in this business from what I understand. And shes made some amazing pedals over the years. I'm sure Josh and Mr Keeley likely know Fran personally. She's got a channel on here but it's not about pedals, under Fran Blanche. Though she has brought them up from time to time. That's how I found out about them. I found her channel before I ever knew about Frantone. IIRC, she even designed a super popular Big Muff fuzz that's still for sale today. Somebody said it was their best selling version ever. 🤷 And it was designed by Fran 👌
I am a hobby builder and what really helped me understand how pedals work is with a java application called Falstad's circuit sim. It allows you to watch how a circuit interacts with the components by slowing down the electricity and frequencies going through the circuit in real time.
I re-watched this video last wednesday, bought a soldering iron and completed a LPB1 kit and Fuzz Face kit over the weekend!
I want to do this!
@@jroobz You definitely should, since then I've built 7 or 8 pedals and modded my ds1, just starting breadboarding now!
@@robotcunning508 Unemployed and thought I could use this time to learn how to do this. Haven’t soldered anything in years, but going to take a crack at it and see how I like it. Waiting for my kit to come in the mail. Have you figured out where to source components yet?
@@danradl I'm in the UK so I use either Tayda for bigger orders, CPC Farnell for bits I most likely forget and Bitsbox for some specific diodes or what I can't find on CPC.
But tbh Tayda will have most of what you want! I got my pcbs from Fuzzdog too!
Buildyourownclone.com has kits. I just finished my mini Dynacomp
06/03/2021 1:55am from Ecuador. I'm watching this video, and every word you say makes me feel more capable to do this. I am an electronic engineer, my degree thesis was to design and implement guitar pedals and it was the best thing of my life. A year later here I am wanting to start this dream, to build pedals. This video is another big part of it.
Thank you
Josh has good comedic timing - you can never tell with RUclips if the timing is edited in but listening to him here is pretty much the same as listening to an edited video. Kudos👍
This video is soooooo underrated. "I didn't know what a capacitor was" really sold it for me. Thank you Josh !
We need “add a knob, save the world” on a tee shirt
I signed up for Skillshare. I will enjoy brushing up on my electronics theory and circuit analysis, design and troubleshooting skills.
I have a background in electronics from age 8, a degree in Electronics,9 years in manufacturing from etching foil heaters to thin film resistors and even a stint as a technician but for some reason i never made my own pedals till now (I'm 50+). I sat down with schematics for my Scholz Rockman X100 headphone amp and broke out each function into a separate pedal
Super Encouraging Josh! Started building pedals in a similar way, now I build completely from scratch, design my own PCB's and it's an amazing side hustle and very satisfying! But I'm encouraged now to go deeper and try to understand more of how everything works within the circuits, Thanks Josh!!
Got em for sale on the net somewhere?
35 minutes in. Volume pot isn't dying its just dirty - Dave's world of fun stuff
So far I have your modded cry baby, the pg14 and the bonsai. Being poor is the only reason why it's not more. I first stumbled across your work when I was first learning about keely mods for the dl4 and ts9. I love the idea of someone mom and popping their way into this market, so I was already rooting for you before I found this channel and realized you're not only likable but extremely honest about praising other pedal companies. I get the impression you're in this for the love of it. All of that goes a long way in gaining a loyal following. Great videos, too. Please keep them coming.
This video is very encouraging to me.. I have no technical education on electronics or circuitry, but through my time and interest, I managed to create a small brand called “Scattered Abroad Guitar Works”, and to date, I have created and release 3 different circuits. I’m continuing to learn, trial & error, prototype, and research until I’m able to make a mark on the world of pedals. Thanks for the encouragement, Josh and JHS!
"He has the stamp" cracked me up
Obsessed nerd power is an amazing creative force! It may be a superpower but who can be sure. Cheers Josh!!
JHS Pedals, you need to get Josh to play an electric mandolin one day...
Its right around the proverbial corner; when Josh's lore becomes legendary, the debate will be whether he got started modding Blues Drivers or Blues Breakers- most videos Ive seen when Josh himself mentions it, even he slips and says, Bluesbreaker" . I currently have the audio electronics bug and I find it so fascinating, the thing that first intrigued me was the caps inside a guitar and the way some people were obsessive about old "mojo" components. Ive come at least as far now to be a fan of both silicone and germanium, actually leaning towards silicone. lol
Josh is the best. Such a positive force 💛🙂☀️
Also, first cold play record ftw. Haters going 2 hat 🎩
Hand stamped v1 remakes, hand-wired circuits WITH CLEAR BACKS. Take my money, Josh.
Josh, Thanks for your dedication to building music making equipment, and making music exciting and endlessly informative. Your love of music is obvious and your humor and style is the best!
I had VTSD once. Took years of therapy to get over it
the brighter the LED=the smarter you are!
One hour just simply isn't long enough. Love watching these and listening to Josh dig in and nerd out. Keep em coming!
Pedal Therapy Time!!!!
I ruined my SD-1's board doing a Fromel mod before I knew what I was doing with a soldering iron. The Metal Zone went much smoother. Am I on my way to becoming the next Josh Scott? ......probably not, but at least now I can swap a couple parts and get a new pedal out of it without destroying anything.
This was fab, Josh. Thanks!
Tip for folks who get into building, restoring or modding electronics: desoldering is not fun. For a little over $100 you can find some very decent little vacuum desoldering stations from ebay, and probably other vendors. I have the "ZD-915" style station and it's completely transformed the speed at which I can do repairs and rework without damaging boards or components. Note that they do require some care, cleaning and maintenance to keep in working order. I was skeptical, but ended being super impressed.
No financial interest in these things. Just a happy customer who didn't realize until about a year ago these things even existed, much less that they might be affordable for normal people.
True but you can find a nice one for $20. Not as nice as a vacuum but work very well
Ok... Great and informative little webcast!! For those of you who want some entertainment when you're watching. Clicl the gear icon, and slow down the video by the .5 setting. Gold.
Josh, you have hundreds of pedals, yet still no tuner on your bench..... love your shows and the streams
Feeling the Strat mood, I just scored my first licensed Strat in a trade. Decent little Squier for a pedal that I just didn't have sonic space for.
Awesome to hear about your beginnings.
Enjoy your videos.
Thanks
I was really diggin’ the intro music. While listening, I experienced a perfect stillness of mind. The ego vanished like smoke and every mystery was fully understood.. My heart bloomed like an ever expanding fractal rose and I was awash with euphoric peace.
Then you harshed my buzz by starting the show.
Just kidding. The intro music was pretty sweet though.
Yes Dave does have some killer chord structures! Thank you
Josh, it's because of you and Brian that i started building pedals. Currently trying to ask Fran of Frantone if I can breadboard one of her circuits.
I hate you. 🤣
Man Josh's story is exactly like mine except I started in 2010 and got tired of pedals fast and moved on to amps which were my main love anyhow. Actually grew up right down the road. Love the encouragement, and persistence and dedication are certainly the keys to success, but I fear the guitar effects business is a bubble that can't last forever.
You're a very good man Josh, and I never say this lightly.
Edit: I love how Josh's _stank face_ is just his normal face with a _pidgeon-head_ groove. 25:01
Speaking of, have you seen the _ScaryPocket_ version of Creep, "What if Creep Was a Funk Song"? I just found it last night and the bass player is all about the _pidgeon-head_ groove. And no spoilers, so I'll just say this genre needs to be called: _Sole Music_ (misspelled purposefully).
“DOD I just talked to him on the phone for..another research project” puts in to perspective how much work and time goes into a pedal release Josh and the team were working on the 250 for a year or two minimum just based on nuggets in videos clips
Hello, Josh! I have two questions that might be interesting:
1) Is it possible to turn an overdrive circuit (tube or solid state) into an EQ or compressor circuit? Thus, making an EQ or compressor (tube driven or solid state) pedal out of an overdrive pedal?
2) Is it possible to put the circuit of a tube rack inside a pedal?
Thanks
I'm sitting here like "I put all my vero builds in hand drilled, rattle can sprayed, hand paint pen 'art' boxes.... sprayed on my back porch... whats the big deal here"
Mine are still on breadboards 🤣
Yo, you should absolutely re-stamp your pedals. I miss my stamp on my old v3 (v2?) pnp. My Pnp is actually just that powder coat orange now.
When I was 15 or 16 I modified my DS1 to oscillate like your Synth Drives - except I didn't have switches like that, so it was just always on - then I broke it trying to desolder the wire I soldered into it to do the mod, lol
if i strapped a microphone to my throat is that the neck position
Please please please make a series of pedals in that original style! I love that idea!
Keep these up they are great, I get to wAtch it after work!!!
I just bought a Strat too! Well, my mom bought it as a birthday gift, but I did all the foot work. The 2018-? MIM's are too amazing to not pick up. Fender had to step up to compete with the wall of guitars coming from China (pun intended), & they stepped all the way through the roof w/the entire Stratocaster line, but the MIM's are the best buy imo. On Reverb you can pick up new returns that come packaged; inspected; w/all the warranties; 45 day return, etc... for only $550. These are mint returns where someone didn't like the color, or the action was too high, & they didn't understand that it adjusts easily, & that's part of the Strat ethos. Zsounds, Musicians Friend, & others have Reverb stores that sell these regularly. I got mine from Sam Ash Direct, & they only charged $12.50 for delivery, & since my mom bought in out of Florida it arrived at my door for only $562.50. That just seem insane to me. I'm 40, so I've thought MIM's have been a little overpriced for the past 25 years, so this seems like I'm stealing it. Haha.
The action had to be dealt with, & all the simple upgrades like a graphtech nut & saddles also need to be done, but as it is, it already sings like an angry angel. Even the pickups sound great, & are another upgraded feature. I just got to the end of this vid, & this guitar sounds just as good as Josh's. I don't wanna actually review the guitar, but damn is it good. My point is for anyone that might have caught the Strat Fever that's going around; here's a way to get a new MIM, that's half the price it was a decade ago, but twice the guitar. Good luck! -Cheers!
My first repair attempt went horribly wrong. 40 pin surface mount chip in a delay that turned out to be static sensitive. I guess it was cool that after I ruined it I replaced with a Ibanez DM-2 that still works.
You guys got me to build my first Klon clone DIY kit, I'm hooked! SWORDQUEST!
The first Coldplay album showcased that guitarist, who is really good, & has some brilliant phrasing. But the label probably wanted to bring the pretty boy front & center to sell more records & by the second album his guitar work was almost non-existent.
Coldplay is awesome. My wife went to their concert and she said it's the best concert she's been to. And she hardly listens to them...
Not kidding around about that "learn to solder first" stuff. Also make sure your iron is not a cheap radioshack one. I toasted the piss out of a metal zone that way. Still pissed about it even though it wasn't working to begin with. I've been messing around with coding VST plugins lately so I don't have to worry about that. lol, still can't get any of my friends to use them though... Maybe one day I'll grow the requisite dangley bits to get back into pedals.
I have pre-invented the wheel. On the wheel of time, this is possible. I did the paper under clear coat (a picture of an orange I drew) thing on my Distorted Orange Heresy, which is a DS-1 clone and despite having an orange on it, and being called Distorted Orange Heresy, the box is painted pink.
Damn, I missed it!!..I remember taking note from earlier vids that you came from Alabama cause I was born & raised there as well
Think you have inadvertently just solved a problem with one of my pedals. Got afuzz that seems to be flickering the same way as your bazz fuzz!!!! I've cleaned(and subsequently replaced) the footswitch, re-flowed all the iffy looking solder, replaced the 9v jack and have been scratching my head for a week trying to figure out what the hell else could cause that on/ off/ almost on sound. waiting on some cable to build an audio probe. "yeah the volume pot is dying" thanks for the hint, think i'll check that next.
Best gear show on youtube
At 15:20, Eat your heart out Tom Morello.
Hey Josh I’ve got a pedal idea for you! Because you can.... one pedal Chasse with 5 of your pedal combine. Say like a morning glory, Whitey tighty, Bonsai, Luckycat, mini foot fuzz. 👍🏻 like a one off because you can!
I have one of your stamped Banana Boosts that I got off reverb about a year ago. Absolutely love it!
Thanks for sharing. I'm in the obsessive mind group myself and cutting my teeth on simple tube amp mods. I've ordered some parts for beginning my pedal making journey too. This video is encouraging for us really interested and curious folks. Maybe one day you'll be talking about one of my creations or variations.
Hello from Paris France
26:11 Mini OG's 😀!
I used to design PCBs for DOD/Digitech. How do you think I can get back into the pedal industry as a designer?
I would buy a white morning glory right now! Doesnt get much cooler than that 🤤👍
nice going Josh. now that damn book is over 100 dollars.
You can find basically any book in pdf for free. ;)
"strats look like
mandolins on Me" .... lmao !!
Where is your LITTLE DRUMMER BOY?
Cool Strat dude!
Know what you mean about the strat looking like a mandolin on you. I was thinking about the giant drummer behind a tiny kit in Gorillaz.
Nice stompers!
Thank you Josh.
1 vote for an og line of pedals. I also think that would be cool!
I have an Angry Charlie on the way love the bite that overdrive gives...ingot a blues driver and almost bought and angry driver but figured I can use both!
Bill Frisell used a Rat foreeeeeeeeever. Sounded great in his textured world.
Thanks guys!
You need to combine all of these pedals into one mega pedal!! You can buy a new stamp
What time is the live show aired? I LOVE it and want to catch it live!
Yes please do a retro OG JHS pedal line.
I had a KOT and hated it!!! I recently got a new Morning Glory! Killer! On the whole people demo it or push it's medium gain thing not it's magic low gain. I literally use it for my clean sound. I am in a power trio and going dead clean sound too stark and unnatural but I can transfer busy flat picking things I wrote on my Martin to my Plexil on clean using the Morning Glory and it is killer.
I had a King of Tone for two years and tried to love it. I finally realized that despite the hype it wasn’t my thing and sold it on Reverb for more than I paid for it two years later.... The Morning Glory and the Paul Cochrane Timmy are infinitely better pedals imho.
thanks
Can you do a behind the scenes tour of the JHS show and JHS company. I think it would be really cool
If the Strat looks small on you, it might be because it is not a Fender. Not to be a brand snob, I am starting to understand the JHS love of boutique guitar gear, but it is true that many boutique brands make their Strat copies with smaller bodies. Charvel calls them Dinky. Put is side by side with a Fender Strat, the necks will be 25.5" scales but you will see the body of the copy could be 25% smaller in appearance!
1:04. beef stew mac n cheese. I kid. I wouldn't have you guys any other way. If you don't know now you know
When Josh goes to the neck position he adjusts his guitar strap.
and?
I feel really dumb for never thinking of printing a PCB on paper before ordering it. I'm always surprised by how much smaller a PCB is than I imagined it during design.
@39:40 “there’s not a lot of excitement in the room” I’m sorry Josh if I were there I would be so excited to see all these early pedals🖤🖤 I lose early jhs pedals and history
Totally unrelated to guitar pedals, you remind me of Toby Flenderson from The Office
um yes please do a line of throwback JHS pedals
The first rat mod tone kind of has a tweed tone. I like it!
JOSH: your company, your way! totally agree and respect but.................. up for a social experiment? (i've never been on board with your lack of definitive labeling) add a few optional stickers (I.E.: DISTORTION, BOOST, CHORUS ETC.....) that fit the pedal and see how many people apply them??????? just a thought. :)
All around great hair on this show
Alabama
Ok, I'm gonna voice a minor gripe. I notice you mention how bright the LED is. I recently got your PG14 pedal and so far I love it. The only thing I don't like is how bright the dang LED is! It makes it hard to see the settings for the knobs. So minor rant over. Love the video's you put out, super informative and entertaining.
*Josh holds up Strat to show how size difference*
Me: Dear...god.....
I remember talking with you on FSB :)
I watched this video for 30min without realizing there was a hand on the box in the left
So my wife walks in and sees the video playing. Even with all the cool pedals on the screen, the only thing she asks about it the "zombie hand". I told her she has been watching too many Walking Dead reruns.
I didn’t notice the hand until half way through ...
Please Mod Pedals again ---I want a Lexi.
Fun stuff
Your fav library scientist viewer will listen to this as I start my day. Have a good day everybody, just remember it’s a miracle we are alive and have fingys to play music today.
I like telling folks that Phil McKnight inspired to me to start repairing guitars, and Josh inspired me to start building my own pedals. Thank you, Josh! I love the Lexi Drive! Is that mod documented somehwere?
Nice one
"I can't help but to do stank faces" * expression doesn't change.
I really like your Strat looking Ukulele!
The only Dave Mathews song I've ever liked is Tripping Billies acoustic performance on storytellers
