LIVE: JHS Pedals Amps In A Box
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 29 сен 2024
- On today's live, I talk about JHS pedals that are amp-in-a-box style overdrive/distortions. They do ampy in a box type stuff... is ampy a word? Whatever, just watch and you'll hear for yourself.
Sorry about the audio guys! The microphone on Josh's laptop was on by accident.

This should be in the description, or as a "pinned" comment at the top of the thread.
Good job man.
I was about to do the same, so thanks.
Quality work. Thank you
The JC120 pedal sounds like a great idea. Also a Ibanez AD202 rack unit for studio use. BBD delay, flanger, chorus, vibrato in one box.
in 80's there was distortion pedal named "Stack in the box", by Washburn, so some one else did the pedal and Washbur put their name in it, Pedal was made in japan.
that was the first pedal that claimed to emulate Marshall in a pedal that i remember.
I wasn't planning on getting a Charlie Brown, but I just got a Timmy, and I love stacking. Got the AT on the way, who even knows?
Don't forget Calhoun and Ruby Red artist pedals.
Sovtek in a box?
Mr JHS, please?
acorn amps make one
We definitely need a "Loud is More Good" amp in a box ! :D
I've been researching and checking out pedals for 6 months now. Every time I look at Gain/Distortion/Overdrive pedals, I always come back to JHS. It actually kind of makes me angry, because I have to put 2 kids through college and I'd spend $1000 easy on your pedals. Thanks for this. REQUEST: Could you do a better overview of the Emperor? Like to see more on the Vibrato...
Tell me about it..the PG-14 is my latest guilty pleasure but the pleasure far outweighs the guilt. Especially between a blues driver and an 808
I bought my Angry Charlie V3 because of Ola England
You mean Ola Sweden, surely ?
(Or Ola Englund...)
Ah... The days before the JHS boys discovered the mic mute button!
I have the JHS PG14 pedal. It's way cool. The video that Josh made with Paul Gilbert posted by Sweetwater sold me on it. Also, the video is hilarious. There's great chemistry between Josh and Paul. They're both funny guys.
Would love to see an episode covering "Tube amp pedals". I mean pedals with tubes in `em. Are they all hype or not. Would be interested in your take on these and get some knowledge on the subject. Great show as usual guys. Thanks for the education.
Sameeee!
Yeah that would be a good one.
They finally did that if you haven't seen it. It's called so.ething like are tube amp pedals a gimmick
@@TrevorScanlan Thx for the heads up mate, Ill take a look :)
There is not a pedal ever made that Josh doesn't think is, "awesome!".
When you think about it... all these tiny devices are pretty awesome. They are probably not meant for me or you, we might not like 'em at all... but in the end they are awesome little devices that shape and tone the signal. Ans someone created it, made it available for others. What's not awesome in that?
There's enough negativity online already. You have to be a diligent watcher to catch the few quick "not a fan of it" type comments.
I mean... He isn't wrong 🤷😁✌️
I REALLY miss this show, this format.
I know, things change, people move on, but dang I really miss it.
I think of Tech 21 waaay before Wampler comes to mind.
Amp in a box so i can plug it right into the line? Need i cab sim? or it just overdrive/distortion?
I agree about Brian Wampler, my drive pedals are mostly Wampler pedals. I use a Euphoria into a Plexi drive deluxe and then into a Tumnus deluxe as my gain stages into a clean ‘65 Fender Princeton Reverb RI. The only other pedal that I use is a EQD Plumes as my clean boost. I’d recommend Wampler pedals to anyone, well worth the money.
Did we ever get that “Heavy Metal” pedal? Was it the Pack Rat? Or is it something else yet to be released?
Hi from the future.... it's here now!
The Wampler Catapulp is discontinued. I emailed them about a month ago. Found one used on Reverb. Love it!
Every time Josh says "Amp in a box" I want to hear the "he has the box" sting played, with a re-worded version!
What's the difference between a preamp pedal and an amp-in-a-box pedals?
I think Josh reminds me of the Principal from The Simpsons.
What is the difference in 'amp in a box' pedals and 'preamp' pedals?
Silence you phone! Naughty phone.
Man I really want to see a rerelease of the twin twelve! I am kicking myself for not getting one before they were discontinued. I keep a fairly regular watch on the used market at all the usual re-sale places for them but they are usually priced between $350-$400 in the rare instance where you do find one.
Same here. I had that Silvertone amp when I was in high school-- I'll probably never have it back.
"Did it hurt my feelings? I dunno.
....
...."
You got your naming conventions but I would imagine something called Charlie Brown would be more like a Wah pedal that sounds like the adults.
I like the clone of Kyle MacLachlan reading questions but i still miss that weird Nick
It's sick, it's piss
some Twin Peaks vibe is good
Doppelgänger.
COFFEE.
@@leegranger9568 Wrong way! ;)
Favorite Wampler Episode!!
Also, realized the Charlie “Brown” sound before you mentioned it- and I love it!... but funny how it becomes the Angry Charlie, and (brown) is dropped.
I totally silenced me phone.
Really enjoying the Catalin SFT; the Stones mode is beautifully subtle and articulate, and I use this almost exclusively, always on, @ the end of my Drive section. The Stoner mode brings output up almost double, and will blow out to full on fuzz quickly, - choose the voltage, 9~18, to suit your rig.
Was also pleasantly suprised by the Walrus 385, - from solid clean, to kicking transistor Fuzz.
These have replaced the Supro Drive, which, in turn, replaced a Superbolt. The Superbolt is solid, and I used it for years, but for THAT sound, I liked the Supro transformer, - combine that with the Boost, and it is hugely sweet.
The Twin 12 is a favourite, and is occasionally swapped out with the 385; in my opinion, that whole line of Catalinbread "amp in a box", are unbeatable, - the RAH, Formula 55, DLS, WIIO, SFT, - crazy good. You live and learn, but I had to go through A LOT of pedals before I arrived there; the EQD Plumes bounced all the other D& D's that aren't Fuzz; good stuff.
Ok now you got me with the "just try stuff" shirt, now it's time to order JHS merch. I just need to ask friends if they want to order something aswell. Be prepared to send stuff to europe!
*Be prepared to send stuff* that's another T-Shirt
Woke up to this being just finished 😭
Got home from work 15 minutes after this ended.
Me too!
It's a week later and I'm watching it. 🤷♂️
Hey I watched this a while back and I am too lazy to watch it all again so I'm just going to ask here:
Is there a simple way to understand the difference between an amp in a box and an OD pedal based on an amp.
Charly Brown - amp in a box right? Marshall style?
Morning Glory - based on a Blues Breaker amp/pedal?
Maybe it's about the controls on the amp-in-a-box more directly mirroring that available on the amp, like the EQs?
Or not that at all?
If anyone can clarify I'd love to know, thanks :)
If you have a equalizer you can create a “Dumble” style tone by arching the mids like a bell.
No 3 point lightning bolt Super Bolt
TPS did that with a GE-7 & a BD-2
Matt Gilbert what episode?
@@kevintatagiba9281 I can't recall. Old one
@@kevintatagiba9281 I theenk it was Are You Dumble? They got real close to the ODS tone, with the BD and EQ, but whiffed on the Steel String Singer. They didn't test some of the cheaper "Dumble"esque pedals, but it's well worth a looksee. ruclips.net/video/pUVx-t1jeE0/видео.html
Any possibility of a "Hiwatt in a Box?" If course, the sheer intrinsic volume and headroom of a Hiwatt are part of the formula, so would be nearly impossible to emulate.
Thanks!
Check out the Bearfoot FX Model H. I have their Marshall and Vox pedals, and they sound great. I don't know if they still make the Model H, but they're on reverb, and there are a couple versions. I don't know which is best, but it's worth checking out videos, I think Brett Kingman did a couple.
Model H 4 or 5 knob is great.
Also the Catalinbread Hyperpak Dirty Channel. That one is like a lower gain HW thing. Cool pedal.
@@Andy_Yates Hey thanks for the info, didn't know this. Mahalo!
@@mattgilbert7347 Will check out, thanks!
Yes sir WampleR!! Plug and play
Toally just sang the he has the BOX jingle when I saw the title of this vid.
I hope this is the episode where he references how bad the @ "clone" that's out there, the "&", is. I've been looking for it and still haven't found it. I saw it once and haven't seen it again. IIRC, Josh said the circuit it different and it sounds different, too. And it IS NOT an AT+(@).
The @ is the JHS pedal I've always wanted and still haven't picked up. I might start looking for a used one soon. Hmmm.
The Skull Strat looks like hot garbage. It looks like Kyle drank a Bang Energy Drink, punched a drywall, and threw on a Affliction/Tap Out Muscle Tee and requested this paint job. Legend has it, he is still playing Nickel Back and Creed Riffs.
I don't think it's the Grim Reaper. You have Malefic/Xasthur's guitar. And he's very angry with you.
Josh - sorry but - you ARE shrinking. There is this force(?) pulling you, incessantly, down towar... I was once 5'11" - now 5'9"
"Nobody likes gristle" Uh... A gentleman named Greg Koch does. He's all about the gristle.😁😄
Josh how could you forget that The Velvet Underground Sterling Morrison and Lou Reed used the 1482 from sears catalog.on Hannah album and white light heat
Can we do the giveaway again? I missed the live show... =,(
You should sell the "Whatever That Is" pedal. Each pedal is a random JHS pedal in the same color / art enclosure.
Like the Airheads mystery flavor
This is an awesome idea.
my screen flickers a lot when I'm watching your vids and Im mildly concerned that youre using 1950s style subliminal messaging. otherwise love the content, keep up the great work
Josh, I have the bolt and Twin 12. So I believe I heard you say put these pedals before reverb and modulation? Thank you for the video!
I have a marshall dsl1 ...if the eq is useless where should I set the dials to effectively be at a flat signal that i can then effectively EQ externally with something like this. 12 o'clock across all 3? That's normally where I start.
Don't you need a pre-amp in the pedal to get that "amp in a box" sound? A bit like a mutron or more recently a mu-fx trutron?
Your Angry Charlie is orange and mine is red. It's fine, I'm totally fine. It's not a big deal.
This is unrelated to this video, but you guys should put out a video regularly that says all the pedals you’re currently making and a separate one for cancelled pedals.
I wish I had this for each brand. I don’t know what I don’t know _about_ and would love to find something new to purchase.
I'm led to believe that the Hard Drive was eluded to in this video (around the 49 min mark) and took 4 years to come out!
A Jonny Green wood Pedal and/or a Jonny Greenwood Fender Tele would be great.
I love my Supebolt V2
Germanium Fuz>Superbolt=winner winner, chicken dinner
That skull themed blue guitar is reminiscent of pinball graphics from the late 70's. Specifically, Corpse Revenge and Skull Island. 👍
From my viewing angle, I thought those were old sailing ship masts in the background on Glarry skull guitar. thanks for the show and explanation of your pedals!
Are these pedals that I can use at the end of my effects chain? In the same way you'd use a Walrus ACS1 for example
I’ve always wanted an Angry Charlie and this just intensified my desire to find one.
Hi Josh, love your your show & quirky sense of humour but I refuse to be silenced by being called a phone!
You will lose height the older you get, I used to be 6ft in High School 1977 and after 30 yrs of powerlifting and now at 61 y/o I am a massive 5' 10 LOL At 53:44 Paul makes those expressions like Robin Trower does when he's playing. LOL
I’m gonna guess the metal pedal they were talking about is the pack rat
Intro: me entering the labyrinth in slomo -w ith the hopes of finding the goblin king. Oooh a japanese worm!
I need to pick up the twin 12. I bought a silvertone 1484 at a Goodwill for $12.99 it is in literally unplayed condition.
Congrats to the winners!!! Still hankering (hankering? really?) for a PG-14, but I just bought an iMac, so it will have to wait. Every time I hear it, I can imagine ways I could use it in recording! Awesome! And nice explanation of the evolution of the Charlies, et al.
This has been the most informative episode of the JHS Show I have yet seen. Thank you.
I could listen to your standby music in the beginning on loop for hours. Who wrote that?
"You muted all the stuff right"
"Yeah were good... Oh Hahaha!" - End
We don’t want all this wasted air space at the beginning of your shows . Get to the meat and potatoes bro!
When I played JCM800's at gigs in the 90's I used to complain that they sound too boxy. How appropriate to buy a box with a boxy sound..... (I do like Marshall sounds nowadays btw)
George Dennis Distorted Mind Rock! please do this one...
How come your Angry Charlie has a diff led color than mine?
Is there a chance of JHS creating a modified Rat type pedal? Would you consider a Muffuletta type Rat pedal?
AC30 in a box?
I don't know if I missed it, but my all time favorite pedal company, Danelectro, was founded in 1947!!! :) Josh either way I love your pedals and gear too and your show is the main show of any type I watch almost religiously! You've taught me sooo much and I hope you keep rocking always bro!!
Can I use angry charlie as a preamp if a will put it in the effect loop of my amp?
The Dead Winter Strat! (you're welcome)
You guys should make a episode about catalinbread
High gain pedal + strat = "High gain but a strat"
Eric Johnson plays with delay in front of distortion always. And it sounds amazing.
The Sundragon amp is your answer to what was used on Stairway and Led Zep 1. It's a modified Coronado
Also, a direct box with some kinda amp choices for strictly clean guitar - jazz and funk. Something Nile Rodgers or Prince would use.
Color box?
Dang it Josh! You got me. Ordered a PG-14 after this live cast.
Not complaining, because I love these videos, but I think that Josh's voice mic needs to be off when the pedal is being demoed, because you can hear the acoustic sounds of the guitar over the amp sounds, and that "colours" the sound as we hear it in the video. Just a thought!
You can only really hear the sound of the amp when a note or chord is being sustained, as the attack is dominated by the acoustic sound....
Call the metal pedal the “Charlie Zone”
Love the info on the Charlie Brown. Also love the random Atari cartridge. Another great video!
Really cool one today
I really thought I was the first one with the right answer with a good amount of seconds before all the comments started showing up but servers I guess :(
Also think a disclaimer before the giveaway would be a good idea since I saw a lot of people confused about the same thing I was
*At the end of livestream*
Josh: You muted all the...
Adison: Yeah, we're good.....oh
priceless xD
Will you mix them with another overdrive?
Where was Nick? Is this pre Jamz days?
Will JHS ever bring back that Twin 12? If not is there another Pedal that JHS has that you can get that same Silvertone effect of an amp in a box?
Jackson audio makes an exact replica in a pedal, it’s on sale for Black Friday if you’re still in the market. Nails the tone!
This open distant Mic is killing me, can't enjoy anything buried in this scooped comb filter tone (not to mention that short slap back delay feel). Please, remix that, you are trying to sell guitar tones after all...
I bet someone forgot muting Drum's overhead Mic (althought it sounds like a much distant mic, kind of over 30ms) or someone opened the delay aux send by mistake.
PS Vintage Guitar says 1968
Anyone know who did the intro tune? Is that Josh?
josh, you are really tearing up the guitar today. More than usual.
The first company to release a faithful Tom Scholz Rockman pedal with the two cleans, two crunches, chorus, and delay will get my money. Now THAT is the classic ‘80s studio sound.
That would be an awesome pedal ,
I met Tom at a NAMM show years ago . He's a really cool guy !
richard mcclain I’m so jealous! I need to make a video with my Rockman and tell him how grateful I am for his contributions to guitar and rock in general! He’s amazing!
the blue one should be called The Genocide Strat...
How have you not made a Mig 50 in a box?
David Arquette… Is that you?
Those Glarrys sound terrible
Umm..is the metal pedal out yet...?
Paul is amazing and has a nose for tone
