I personally love this game more than any other mario party games because the mini games have such great replay values. Not a lot of boards to play (only 6) but that's ok since they're not bad, and the items made everything so interesting. Reverse Mushroom is one of the most OP items out there when used in the right occasion.

Still my favorite Mario Party game! Personally, I felt like this game built upon and fine-tuned everything that was good about Mario Party 2.

I personally find this game to be my favorite in the Mario Party series, if only for the Duel Mode, which has yet to return to the series. Also, I think that the new items and the ability to have three items on you at any time adds another layer of strategy to the game.

I think the aesthetic of the boards being literally flat is due to how the theme is surrounded about how the characters are inside a magical game box, where it looked like a pop up book cut out and such. I agree that it made it look less detailed than Mario Party 2, but it makes a lot of sense for its theme and also isn't really fully distracting IMO.

Yeah I agree. Aside from the boards, pretty much everything else is an improvement from 2. And the boards aren’t even that bad. The only one I really don’t care for is Creepy Cavern. The rest I’d say perfectly make use of the items in unique ways, such as Woody Woods making perfect use of mushrooms to reach or to avoid reaching certain sections. Sure each board does have an issue with it, but overall they can be quite good (though not as good as 2). Combine that with some amazing, totally original minigames, and you have yourself an amazing Mario Party game. Just as good as 2 in my opinion.

Yeah, couldn't disagree more with Glenn's take on this one tbh. He didn't even mention the expanded item system, the fact that this one has the biggest & most refined pool of mini-games (75 vs 50) of the N64 MP's. -- so you have MORE options for meta-game strategy on the board, making that much more exciting, PLUS 25 more minigames than usual in the randomizer to keep things fresher on replays. Best one of ANY Mario Party title imho, everything's expanded and tightened up compared to the first 2, and things went downhill a bit w/ MP4 on the GameCube

Mario Party 2 was actually my favorite in the series. Yes there were quite a few recycled minigames, but the boards felt more alive, the graphics looked pretty great compared to the original, and it even has my absolute favorite minigame, Bowser's Big Blast. The other thing is that it's the only game in the series where each board has a cosmetic effect on the characters.

I've never had a Mario Party game until yesterday but from everything I've seen and heard Mario Party 2 is what Super Smash Bros Melee was to the first super smash bros. It was basically the same game but improved on. So it made the first one not really worth playing/buying.

Hey Glenn. I found your channel only a few days ago but I've gone through almost every single video on it.
My experience with Mario Party 2 and 3 was... short. My father and I spent over 400 hours on the original game, eventually including my sister into the mix when she was old enough, and so my dad went and purchased 2, and 3 when they came out, only to be sat back on the shelves before we had even finished a complete game board because he didn't enjoy the item system in the newer games and felt that the boards and mini-games weren't up to par and didn't offer as much fun for he and I to enjoy together. Honestly, I didn't mind missing out on the two newer games because it was more time spent with my father playing the games we both loved and even got my sister to love. We still get the console out every few weeks and actually play through a whole game of the original Mario Party, usually on D.K's jungle with my sister playing Peach, my father playing Luigi, and I playing D.K.
That being said, did you ever play any of these games with your family, Glenn, and if so, how was your experience?

I feel like you completely missed the battle mode. That 1v1 duel mode you HAD to do in the single player after every map. Which could also be done with another human player. That was honestly fun, turning Mario Party in to a turn based stratagy game for a little while.
I personally, loved all three Mario Party games on the N64. One because it's the first one. It make not of been great, but it did not do much wrong. Good music, good mini games, (That got removed after it. I loved the one where you had to team up and get he light bulb to the end of the hallway before the boos got you all), and some neat maps. Two had awesome personality. Better mini games, and maps. It just good what one lacked and improved on it. But three, felt improved on so many different levels. More minigames, all for the most part new. A new game mode, and a good single player challenge if you got to the super late game. Trying to beat that final minigame for the first time was hard.

2 and 3 are tied for me on the N64, 2 definitely has the better boards and I liked the themes for each one. But 3 had nice new mini games, more items to use, and the duel mode which I found to be fun. Which you didn't mention in the review by the way, did you ever try it?

I recently got the game off of Amazon, the label was a bit faded but I got it for a decent price. I played it with my brother but unfortunately I enjoyed it and he didn't really like it that much. It sucks because these games are only really fun with two people and I always enjoy playing them with my brother. So I guess I'll just stick to 1 and 2 (our personal favorite and the one we grew up with) when we hang out. I'll still play this one seeing as I actually enjoy it and it does have a decent single player mode( a Rarity for this series) but it just sucks that I was looking forward to it and only I could enjoy it. I do think it's a fun game regardless.

I never played this game back in the day. It's quite expensive nowadays. One of the most expensive n64 games I think. I managed to pick it up a while back for 30 euros, which is quite cheap and I remember when I first played this a few months ago, that it didn't look as good as MP2. I guess Hudson needed this game out the door before people would ignore it over the Gamecube. I 've always found it strange that none of the MP games use the expansion pack in any capacity. Usually, games that incorporate the expansion pak suffer framerate drops, which wouldn't really work with the frantic mini games, but it could have been used to increase the resolution of the boards at least. especially in MP3.

For me 1st was a surprise hit, second was the peak and solved a lot of issues the first game had and 3 was pushed out quickly to make some extra money before the death of the console…quite a quick trilogy when you consider that mario party 1 wasn’t an earlier n64 title isn’t it

    • @BassForever
      @BassForever 2 года назад +1

@@n64glennplant While 3 might have been rushed out, the improvements to the core gameplay is where it shines. In particular it's the item system that makes MP3 far more strategic then either MP1-2. Being able to hold 3 items, and items such as the reverse mushroom, bowser phone, lucky lamp, and poison mushroom really change how you play tackle the boards and other players. The rare items when they do show up like the wacky watch and lucky charm can completely change the face of the game. Many of these items can be used offensively or defensively, the reverse mushroom in particular allows you to make some insane plays like visiting boo twice in one turn, or getting stars behind junctions that normally require a skeleton key.
Realistically I view the n64 trilogy as the prototype, the refinement, and the perfection of the formula.

  • @Sonicisbadazz

While I know I'm the exception in this regard, there's only two Mario Party games that I feel have truly disappointed me: 5 and 7. 5 was kind of...weird. It seemed to be introducing some of the later innovations but in a haphazard way, like the Item Spheres that you could throw onto the board. Ironically, it also included a regular, traditional board game option WITHOUT mini-games which was arguably more fun than the normal game. 7 was okay, but it threw out some of the innovations that made MP6 so special to me.
Funny thing is, you mentioned that Mario Party 2 seemed rushed to you. Yet I'm pretty sure that's the favorite on most people's lists. I also feel like the Mario Party games--though built PRIMARILY for multi-player--also contain robust single-player options. The only major reason we don't notice them is because in single-player, we have to go against CPUs that are wildly inconsistent and make a lot of us WISH we were playing other human players. But really, if you think about the game modes offered, they have good single-player content too. The Mini-Game "Coaster", the collectible figurines in MP4, the oodles of unlockable goodies in many of the games...these kept me coming back for more even in solo modes.a
That said, as time passed, the single-player content DID seem to get less and less robust. Part of the reason I think this happened is because they did away with the system where you could purchase the individual mini-games for play outside the normal game boards. That ended with MP3, replaced with merely encountering the mini-games during regular play before they became available. That may be why MP2 is considered most people's favorite.

    • @WarioJim

Having to buy the minigames in MP2 may feel more rewarding, I suppose? But it wasn't something I was too happy with when I played 2 for the first time, as in the multiple Mario Partys I played before, I preferred not having to choose between which minigames I wanted to play whenever. Mind you, I MP2 had a lot to hold me over as a guy who plays most of his Mario Partys in single player.

Can’t agree more. The boards, the minigames, the side modes. It’s all amazing (though I’d say 2 is just as good).

I really want to get this game for my N64...
    Hoping to get it cheap...😋
I like it the best in the Mario Party N64 games...Also has Daisy and Waluigi as new playable characters.

I don’t care what others say to me this Mario Party is the best one not because of its mini games more like it was my first ever video game 🎮 and I’m super attached to this Lovely Tittle

Rushed? Dunno mate, I'd say this review is kind of backwards. Though, I've never actually played this one... I played 2, but this one always looked the most appealing and the one I want to play the most. Why is it like that with me?

Between Mario Party 1 and 3, which is better? I have #2, been debating on which one to order next

+Nathan Naylor I'd say 3, 2 is the best IMO so you'd find it hard to go back to 1 without it appearing to be very basic

I have to admit this review is pretty sad. Did you actually play this before reviewing it because you neglected to mention a game mode that, not only is unique in this game with the series, but is HALF the bloody game. First time your review has dissapointed me...

Yeah, as a guy who has played the first 7 Mario Parties by itself (I just love competing even against AI), Story Mode in 3 is just great, especially the latter part of it (and also the accomplishment of being a Miracle Star).

I requesting this as a kid for my birthday simply because it had Waluigi and me and my brothers loved playing it. Sadly I stupidly sold this one to get Mario Party 2.

I rather enjoyed MP3 a little more than MP2 though I love both of them about the same. I just try to stay away from the frustrating Bowser Toss duel mini game.

I never played 1 as a kid, but I absolutely loved 2 and 3. Even to this day, I have a hard time picking between those two, but 2 might have the slight edge even though 3 was the only one I actually owned.

I remember part 3 being a let down when renting it once in 2001 (maybe I would regard it differently now). Part 2 was my favorite for a very long time. The new wii u version (although different) has been a lot of fun when a friend of mine brings it over.

well I dont know why you talk toó much about the board and the graphics .
You not mentioned anything about the new modes AMD other stuff that make the difference with the previous titles and at the end you dont give a veredict as you usually do in your vídeos =\

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  6 лет назад +1

I don’t give a verdict because it’s just my opinion, even for games I do or do not enjoy I’d still like people to play them and make their own decision because my own thoughts are just that and what I do this channel for is having conversations in the comments with everyone who has opinions, it’s more of a conversation starter I feel 😬
