Downloading is flat out legal. Distribution is the illegal thing in copyright law. There's some confusion because if people use a P2P/torrent downloading application or something, they're distributing stuff at the same time, usually without really knowing it.
If I remember correctly the justification for ripping games is because you're allowed to make an "archival copy" of movies or music you own and burn them to discs as long as you didn't sell them. The equivalent would be a backup copy of a game and then exploiting your console to accept it. But there was a case where the court considered playing the media on a different device (example being ripping your CD's and DVD's to a computer/Plex server/mp3 player) to be "transformation" where the two were considered different copies. If we apply that same logic, emulating games on different devices than the original isn't necessarily completely legal. It's a grey area. But it's not really enforceable since how exactly will anyone know if the process can be done 100% offline?

A loose cartridge collection isnt very appealing to me anyway, plus the games are getting expensive, for less than the price of Conkers Bad Fur day I can buy a ED64 and have the entire library on that 1 Cartridge with sd. A no brainer, for me at least, and its still original hardware and software, no emulation, still using all original peripherals on a 36" Sony Trinitron. The N64 is still a very hard system to emulate with good results so I feel this is the best solution to play the games these days, old cartridges while more reliable than old discs, still have battery and/or corrosion issues or bent pins. Its fun to revisit the old well known games and try some I missed the 1st time around. And no downloads, updates or online BS to fiddle with either.
Also, check locally for retro or second-hand gaming shops. I'm lucky that I have two of them within a twenty-minute drive in the Midlands of SC. you should probably take it out of the shed and put it somewhere safer where it will collect less dust. Dust and dirt can cause system issues. Also water will ruin the whole thing.
Plus, Piko Interactive is starting to release games that were cancelled for N64 during development. That's another reason dust off your ol' N64 and be prepared for.
ABSOLUTELY worth it. Great games (as you already know), you can get a flash cartridge and play ALL the games (everdrive 64 also has an nes emulator so it can play most of those too and it's region free), and the hardware is some of most solidly manufactured I've ever seen. I've dealt with many older consoles that had issues and the N64 seems to be one of the best built. No moving parts -No hardrive or laser to go bad. The systems are now 25 years old, and the only problem I ever had was one that had a non working controller port (probably just dirty). The one have now I fully expect to work in 20 years, and I wouldn't be surprised if it still works 50 years from now. These systems will be going long after most switches die. Also a plus to play it on a Sony Trinitron. The colors look great for stuff like ssb and mk64. Think I'm a little OCD about it, but I prefer the experience of using original hardware with a crt tv. That's the most accurate way to play for me. I have sm 3d all stars on the switch but I never play sm64 on it. I'd much rather play it on my n64. Not too into the cart collecting tho..that can be pricey.
I've had mine since it came out and bought another one at Goodwill with the controller and it still works pretty much a backup in case if the other dies I've invested so much into it used games, used rumble packs, and used controllers as well. my all time favorite childhood. Diddy Kong Racing, Star Wars Episode 1 Racer, 007 GoldenEye, Pokemon Stadium 1&2, Mario 64
You were talking about the cartridges doing more damage to the wall than the game. That literally happened to me! I got so pissed at Rainbow Six one day, I threw the game across the room and it dented the wall but the game was absolutely fine. lol Still have small dent in the wall 25 years later!
Thankfully I got a Nintendo 64 several years ago. It was a pre-owned system previously used by another of the service users at my disability group. I got it for $15 with a good amount of games. I thought until recently that the system had problems, but I figured out it was the connection to the power supply that was causing it to turn off frequently. I removed and reattached the power brick, and it works brilliantly now!
A few errors to note in this video. Do not blow in your cartridge. The saliva will ruin the copper pins. Also, you can play turok on the switch. Along with doom 64, Star Wars episode one pod racer
I got a Nintendo 64 long after the console died when I was 11. It had the best party games and it was the console that introduced me to Zelda and it’s always been my favorite console.
I had a great childhood in almost every aspect, but the N64, especially Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart, Mario Party and Banjo Kazooie still hold some of my fondest memories
I'm currently eyeing a used N64 at a local retro games shop here in SC. It's about $100.00. I've already purchased a copy of Nightmare Creatures to play and copies of Golden Eye and others will follow in time. It will be a part of my Retro Set-Up that includes an Atari 2600 Vader Edition, my original Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Dreamcast, and Nintendo Wii. I never owned an N64 when they came out, but I played them a bit, along with the GameCube, at friend's houses. I'm looking forward to adding it to the collection.
I got one last week for free, my grandparents are selling their place and an old N64 that my cousin had as a child was left there since the 90's. Glad I could cop it with 15 games. It feels amazing and brings me memories from trips I when I was playing siblings in diddy kong racing etc. Star wars shadows of the empire is fun as hell
After recently getting a free CRT TV I finally dug my old (second, not childhood original) N64 out of storage along with some games I thankfully kept like Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, No Mercy, and Mario Tennis. Kicking myself for selling a few games (probably for pennies) back in the day but enjoying revisiting these classics. Re-buying a couple old games too before they increase in value even more. By the way, I'd highly recommend buying a Forever Pak if any of your old memory cards still work. They're a little pricey but should more or less work indefinitely since you won't lose data when the batteries die.
They do in some cases but are niche usually eBay , I bought a cartridge of goldfinger 64 and goleneye X. Also a music album that was released on n64 last year called remute.
If i could choose only 1 system to play the rest of my life i would choose the N64 without hesitation or regret. I still love getting my best friends together to play WCW vs NWO Revenge or WWF No Mercy and i have lost count of how many times i have played through Zelda OOT, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Operation Winback, Nightmare creatures, Star Wars Episode 1 Racer, Quest 64, Body Harvest........... Best System ever
I’m 14 so I kind of missed the chance to play on an N64 when I was younger, though I was lucky enough to play on an SNES! I feel very tempted to purchase an N64 but I’m a broke kid so I really can’t - even though there’s a shop about two blocks by my house that sells them.. ahhh, I’ll own one someday though…
I actually grew up on the wii and DS lite. I had Super Mario 64 for the Ds and it made me start pondering about playing the original N64 game. Its one thing to emulate, but i thought that playing on the actual console would be better. So now i just bought a Japanese Gold N64 with a USA/Japan cartridge mod. Cant wait for it to come in
Emulation is not illegal, I was born in 2006 and never had a N64 but I managed to emulate it on Android, I played Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, SSB Melee, Golden Eye, Mega Man 64, Super Man and I have to say other than the super man game all the other games are glorious, you had great games back then, it's a bummer that today's games are bad. I also emulated GameCube and SNES
I don't think you should repeat nostalgia for someone who had experience with that console. And this is too light for someone who never saw console "in flesh"
I just got 11 n64 games for free bc my mom's friends had a bunch of them just laying around.. one of them also gave me a console and a controller.. and another gave me a second controller.. 🤩🤩
I remember getting my first Nintendo 64 Christmas of 1996. I was beyond excited! This system was ahead of it’s time. The original system was black. 4 controllers and used a cartridge for the games. The original controller had two joy sticks, a d pad, 4 yellow C buttons, a Z trigger button on the bottom and a spot to put a memory card in or a rumble pack. I love how this controller feels! When playing Super Mario 64 you really get a feel to how the controller works. For instance you can easily have Mario run in a full 360 circle by just moving one of the joysticks in a circle. The controls are very responsive. Super Mario 64 starts out very easy and gets more challenging as you move deeper into the castle and collect more stars. I love this game! I highly recommend the Nintendo 64 system and Super Mario 64.
Playstation 1 controller design kills N64's though. The joystick is more accurate and much smoother when rotating. I owned a N64 in 1996 - loved it but did switch to PSX around 1999. The PSX had much more games and seemed mostly targeted to older kids/teens as opposed to Nintendo. BUT Nintendo-only games were and are still amazing in their own right 👌🏼
@@Aaroncarter55726 Ah man that's so great. I love the fact that they brought back all those old consoles to make them accessible for the newer (and older) gens to experience them. I'm currently replaying Pokemon Gold on a Gameboy Color emulator and Zelda: A Link to the Past on a GameCube emulator. I love re-playing those classic titles that really stand out for those franchises. Game on bro!
I have a traditional colored one but I really dont care for newer consoles. They seem to just push better graphics, and they release shoddy unfinished games with repetitive gameplay and bad storylines.
Used console $100-200. Maybe some extra controllers ($20 each, 3rd party are decent). Everdrive X7 ($150-200). NES/SNES are easily emulated. Wii's perfectly replicate a gamecube. But the N64? Nothing like the real thing baby.
Do you know an alternative? My majoras mask copy has to be blown on when you want to boot it up because its not in great shape, but I dont want to make it worse.
@@SoupyMittens The only reason Blowing on it works is because it gives it moisture, If you want to stop Blowing on it as often, Get a Q-tip gets some alcohol on it and clean the bottom with it until the Q-tips come out as clean as possible the reason I say that is because majoras mask is gold so maybe some paint will remain.

N64 + Everdrive is a good place to start. Then RGB mod it and use a SCART cable to a CRT then you are set. If you must use an HDMI digital tv with the analog video from the n64, then use the Retrotink5x.

"it is worth having due to some game being physical also might want to consider buying with it an hdmi port n64 cable adapter since the era of the tricolor cables are discontinued feature on the new screens" Things to keep in mind. this is a good alternative since Nintendo screwed over their ports for consumer reasons and practices. 1# The drawback is the search on where to find these cartridges depending on which one, you're looking for some are very rare or limited. 2# collectors and competitors these two have the drive to complete their library making some of the games you want to play impossible to get your hands on. 3# If you still have your game cartridges stored in a safe place, you're in luck do not sell them it might be tempting but at this day of age gauging prices is imminent. 4# if your old n64 is not working or the game takes too long to boot on top of crashing it means you will need a replacement. (Speed runners recommend using a real hardware then an emulator due to reasons that is a bonus) "Emulators are worth having if you want to play the community hacks or b3313."
I was volunteering at a summer a while back and I walk into a room with a woman emptying a box and she says « Look! It’s an old game boy! » I turn around as fast as possible and see 2 Nintendo 64’s. So natural I started nerd out about the system. Then she said since it’s has been sitting there for years and no one knows who’s it is I can keep it.
I just got my N64 today. It is region free. And I can't wait for the other items to come in the mail so I can finally practice 0 star speedrunning Super Mario 64
True story.i got a N64 for free at work purely because someone tried to flog it at the local second hand shop and they couldn't because the gold controller was broken.came with 2 games,a second controller and unofficial rumble pak.was well chuffed when it worked.
my parents bought me the 64 when it was released i was 7 years old, super mario golden eye bomberman diddy kong racing mario kart, my dad always bought different coloured controls that i collected, best time of my life.
This year, I bought a Nintendo 64 without having played it before, so I don’t have nostalgia associated with it. I love it! I don’t regret getting one at all.
I looked up my view on nintendo 64 on RUclips, but i didn't really see anything related to it. So im just gonna say it here. I no longer like or find joy in n64 games, nes and snes, and other known nintendo consoles are just fine, but i just can't enjoy 64 games anymore, ive been trying the available 64 games on the switch for a while multiple times, but the lack of art style and details and good visuals and models just ruins any desire i have to put anytime into playing it. Nintendo 3ds and ds remakes of n64 games are still hella fun tho, especially majoras mask 3d (i even still have the cartridge).
One thing about this video that needs clarification is that emulators aren’t illegal it’s downloading Roms and the only legal way to use emulators is to dump the cartridges you own using a cartridge dumper which is it’s own price. You could also rip n64 games from games that include n64 Roms in them like Zelda collectors edition which is cheaper to dump and you can use dolphin and go into the dump of that game and extract the n64 Roms. Also idk where you get your prices but n64 costs $85 usd here which is pricey compared to some consoles like GameCube or ps1. Also from what I found there is very good emulators for n64 specifically that are accurate and fast which are much better than Nintendo own emulator.
I literally got on for Christmas 🎄 2020 and I was like It’s a Nintendo 64!!!!!!!!! Omg!!!!!!!! Omg!!!!!!!! And it came with the first ever game I’ve ever played ⭐️Mario Party 3⭐️ Btw we also have Turok,Turok 2, Star-wars racer and Doom 64 on the eshop
Welp. I just picked up a mint condition Nintendo 64 with Tetris and super Mario 64. None of the games are clones. It also came with the controller it had from the factory that was almost never used. Same composite cable and power adapter it came with too. It looks like I just pulled it out of the box. All of this was 0$ by the way. I’ve named the console “ramen” because it’s a VERY low price but very high enjoyment. Just like ramen.

Take that fucker out of the shed and put it in your living room where it belongs! Give that console the treatment it deserves!
you should probably take it out of the shed and put it somewhere safer where it will collect less dust.
5:30 Nintendo 64 Emulation is not illegal what’s illegal is distributing a rom without a license
Right, otherwise Nintendo couldn't have made the Virtual Console on the Wii and Wii U.
Awesome! Hope you enjoy the great library :)
15 DOLLARS?! WITH A GOOD AMOUNT OF GAMES?! Oh, you hit the motherload! Dude, that's awesome! May you enjoy it for many many years!
I have an N64 and I can attest, this is true!
Did you buy it on the release year?
@@ryanmomtahan4786 no lol, got it in 2020
A few errors to note in this video. Do not blow in your cartridge. The saliva will ruin the copper pins. Also, you can play turok on the switch. Along with doom 64, Star Wars episode one pod racer
Thank you!!! Q-tip with 70 pct alcohol is a much safer alternative.
Blow don't drool 😂😂😂
@@jiminycricket9857 exactly. Just make sure your mouth is dry before you blow.
Starfox, fzero x, both banjo games, jet force gemini, dk64, Zelda, battletanx, too many classics to count. GOAT game system
They're a little pricey but should more or less work indefinitely since you won't lose data when the batteries die.
i still have my 1996 n64 and it works lol sold all my good games tho only kept perfect dark, 007 and wrestlemania2000
The funtastic colored N64 consoles ARE ABSOLUTELY collectors items and the games ARE sky rocketing in price because of so many people collecting.
Even though I’m 9 my dad got me an n64 and I am a fan of nintendo
Never purchased a N64, found mine in the trash, best part is I found a game cube and traded it for a copy of Mario 64.
I wish they still made old video games but brand new condition
I feel very tempted to purchase an N64 but I’m a broke kid so I really can’t - even though there’s a shop about two blocks by my house that sells them.. ahhh, I’ll own one someday though…
still have mine and play it almost daily got it 1997 and it still goes strong and the games are great no matter what nothing can replace the N64
Miss those days, love the SNES/N64 and Gamecube Era's.
Cant wait for it to come in
ds lite is the best to mod rn

Nintendo 64 NSO: Exists
The Wii U has a very legal and excellent emulator in its store.
Yes indeed, I actually got into Nintendo 64 collecting from playing the Wii Virtual Console games.
One of my most favorite retro consoles ever. N64 and Super Nintendo! Love them!!!
lucky
I only have 4 and I thought they were all broken but for seem reason they decided it was time to rise from the grave
NINTENDO SIXTY FOOOOOOOOOUR
Playstation 1 controller design kills N64's though. The joystick is more accurate and much smoother when rotating. I owned a N64 in 1996 - loved it but did switch to PSX around 1999. The PSX had much more games and seemed mostly targeted to older kids/teens as opposed to Nintendo. BUT Nintendo-only games were and are still amazing in their own right 👌🏼
@@SrananKing Wow, I’ve never been able to afford a ps1 back in the day. But now I have the PS classic.
@@SrananKing Yeah man, I currently have a NES classic, SNES classic, Mini Sega Genesis. I’m glad they have those too, retro gaming never dies 💪
I like how you said you couldn’t play n64 games on the switch but I’m watching this 7months later when you can do play them on the switch
I have the lime colored n64 when I told my classmates they weren't impressed since they have vr headsets and all the newer consoles
It’s ok I’m 13 and I want a N64 more than a PS5 or Xbox Series X
@The_boyz452 ! I'm glad that someone understands me like I'm 12 but I still want try and collect all types of consoles
I enjoyed the lighthearted humor in this video. :)
Love the video, don't tell people to blow on cartridges though it corrodes the connection to the console.
Underrated comment!!!
@@shaun8062 Just want to save as many cartridges as possible ^_^
Do you know an alternative? My majoras mask copy has to be blown on when you want to boot it up because its not in great shape, but I dont want to make it worse.
@@SoupyMittens The only reason Blowing on it works is because it gives it moisture, If you want to stop Blowing on it as often, Get a Q-tip gets some alcohol on it and clean the bottom with it until the Q-tips come out as clean as possible the reason I say that is because majoras mask is gold so maybe some paint will remain.
@@shinobi197 what type of alcohol should I use?
I was blown away when i first played n64 as a kid. It was unlike anything ever seen. I was a Nintendo guy. I wish Nintendo kept the cartridges for a few more years. I dont believe the n64 run was over. I wanted more.. I didnt like the Gamecube at all...
I recently bought a nintendo 64 exclusive transparent purple for 70$ and some cartridges and I don’t regret a cent I tell ya
N64 + Everdrive is a good place to start. Then RGB mod it and use a SCART cable to a CRT then you are set. If you must use an HDMI digital tv with the analog video from the n64, then use the Retrotink5x.
I've ordered an NTSC region free model, can't wait till it arrives. 😁
How much should you pay for the watermelon red n64
Ebay has a wide selection of new controllers that are a LOT less awkward.
why you didnt refer funtastic series at all?
I was just looking at Some of me dads old stuff I opend one of the boxes thare was an n64 with like 20 amazing games 4controllers I starded playing and had a rlly good time
Who Still Play Nintendo 64, Besides Me??🙋♂️
Note :
This Console is One of the GOOD Console Game. In 2021 Now, This Console is Still LEGENDS, Besides PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 and Other Console 90's & 2000's (Just Like SEGA Console Game)
I’m on quake 2 at moment first bought n64 in 1998 with shadows of empire what a great experience I’m re living
Definitely get the expansion pak and an everdrive flash cart. Lots of goldeneye custom maps and campaigns to play and Mario 64 hacks . The n64 can play fmv video clips too, it can play nes and gameboy colour roms. So much to dabble with if you get an everdrive
1:25 the switch “am I a joke to you”
bro it’s so expensive now
Fave console, still got it. Perfect Dark, Doom 64, Pilotwings.
The game “worms” was one of the greatest games of all time and nobody talks about it
My answer to this question is a big yes buy one while they are all still working and at an affordable price. I have two US black N64 consoles.
"it is worth having due to some game being physical also might want to consider buying with it an hdmi port n64 cable adapter since the era of the tricolor cables are discontinued feature on the new screens"
Things to keep in mind.
this is a good alternative since Nintendo screwed over their ports for consumer reasons and practices.
(Speed runners recommend using a real hardware then an emulator due to reasons that is a bonus)
"Emulators are worth having if you want to play the community hacks or b3313."
I've never understood the n64's controller design
reading the instructions is a no-brainer to understand
its the first analog controller, they didn't have any clue what they were doing. Also it works fine with most games.
I have the nintendo 64 and everdrive has all the games 🎮 🤓🤙
But for real, please don't blow in your cartridges, people. A cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol will do the trick just fine.
Also Thankful for what they have!
I just got my N64 today. It is region free. And I can't wait for the other items to come in the mail so I can finally practice 0 star speedrunning Super Mario 64
Who else just seen the relaxing end upload a video
don't send the FBI after me, but I like having all my old games on an everdrive cart so I don't have to physically swap 'em.
You shouldn’t blow on the disk it can damage it over time because of spit. Use rubbing alcohol
+ Covid19 factor 😅😅
Here after the switch online update and yes I own an original n64 the one I played as a kid
Blowing into the cartridge also isn’t a great idea cause you’re just spreading bacteria on to the pins
I'm nowhere near an expert in this field, but don't you also need a CRT TV because higher end TVs stretch the resolution past it's limits?
I’ve found setting the TV to 4:3 mode makes the resolution much better, than it does it the 16:9. It looks great
4:15 yea now it is
This year, I bought a Nintendo 64 without having played it before, so I don’t have nostalgia associated with it. I love it! I don’t regret getting one at all.
Still have my N64 with all the games that matter..
Will never sell them.
I remember my cuz had a Nintendo 64 and play mlb!-JM16
When I was younger I had Conker's Bad Fur Day and the Pikachu N64. But my parents were drug addicts and everything was lost.
Lol
I’ve started n64 collecting. I so far have 8 games (including conker)
So how much were games before the prices went up?
I literally got on for Christmas 🎄 2020 and I was like
It’s a Nintendo 64!!!!!!!!! Omg!!!!!!!! Omg!!!!!!!!
And it came with the first ever game I’ve ever played
⭐️Mario Party 3⭐️
Btw we also have Turok,Turok 2, Star-wars racer and Doom 64 on the eshop
Doom 64 is on switch
