  • 2003 Honda CR-V serpentine belt change. The video seems a bit incomplete. It was an overcast day, and a really tight space. I found it impossible to 1) film, 2) hold a flashlight, 3) pull on the tensioner, and 4) release the belt at the same time. So I decided to do only 3 & 4.
Tools used: flat head screwdriver, 15 inch 1/2 drive breaker bar, 14 in combination wrench, 3T floor jack, 4T jackstand, wheel chocks

Great video! helped me out bigtime last weekend.
For all you 02-06 CR-V people out there looking to do this project, check your belt tensioner once you've got the belt off. Mine was bad and was slowly chewing its way through the back side of the belt. Look for wear spots on the idler pulley, orange deposits that may be a sign of corrosion, and/or any play in the idler bearing. if you see any of these things, replace the tensioner, or you'll just keep wrecking belts.

Just did my belt on my 04...left the wheel on sitting on the ground. Took about 30 minutes. After getting over the shock of what a PITA it was going to be and just doing it...it wasn't a bad job. Work the belt from the bottom putting the new one in though. I will say that it was the most difficult belt I've ever replaced since 1976 (when I was driving a 75 civic)

Here's an ez way to do this. Route your belt around all of your upper pulleys first. Then go to the bottom and route belt around the right pulley. At this point , put your car in neutral. Go back to the two lower pulleys and have a helper pull tensioner bolt. Start the belt around the crankshaft pulley and with a ratchet socket turn the crankshaft pulley in the appropriate direction (mine was to the left) and the belt will ride right around this final pulley. I also used a drum stick to help route the belt around the upper pulleys. This was is so ez and fast.

The space in front of the tensioner is very limited. Someone mentions to use a shallow face socket, but unfortunately I did not have a shallow socket, so I improvised. There is a steel line held on by a clamp directly opposite the tensioner. You can use a slightly offset 10 mm box end wrench to remove the clamp bolt holding the line. This will allow you to push the line down and out of the way and have space to put a socket on the tensioner bolt.

i tied the long wrench to a solid part near the radiator with rope, which held the tensioner off so my hands are free to put the belt back on without tension. worked a treat but just be sure that there is no danger of it slipping off and dont put your hand between the belt and the tensioner - if it sprung back on your fingers or hand i think it could ruin your day

Very helpful video! Thank you. Your idea of the wrench/bar combo worked well for me. I wasn't sure how to do it since there is so little room and you can't get a socket onto the bolt of the tensioner. Wasn't a bad job really in the end. Maybe 30 minutes.

Perfect vid. This is really helpful thanks.
Think my 2003 CR-V still has its original belt. It's only done 65000 miles.

And lastly, start the new belt from the bottom as you will need to again push the tensioner back at the top to slide the belt back on.
    Good luck!

Here are a few additional tips for removing and reinstalling the belt on a 2003 Honda CRV.
As mentioned in the video pull the power steering reservoir out of the bracket. Then disconnect the reservoir line from the pump and push the reservoir to the left out of the way (not mentioned in the video). This can be done by taking the tension off the line clamp.

My serpentine belt I changed with 147k had some wear, but certainly could go longer. I always store the old belt in a cranny in the engine compartment as an emergency fix replacement, not that I've ever needed one. Disconnected the power steering fluid reservoir, and drained out , after repair filled with new. The tensioner was very tight, I used two wrenches, next I'll use something else, or a longer wrench.

an easy way to replace the belt is take a wrench find a piece of PVC slide the wrench into the PVC take some duct tape to keep the wrench steady. Takes 10 min

I also bought a long, flat breaker bar from Napa Auto for about $15 on sale. The tool is called a "Serpentine Belt Tool", by Evercraft Service Tools and the part number is 776-9078. Put a 14 mm socket on this bar and you can use it to loosen the tensioner. Silly me, I thought the tensioner had to be fully removed but instead you merely put the socket on the tensioner bolt and push back about a 1/4 of a turn to remove tension on the belt. You can then pull the belt off the pulleys.

I noticed the belt diagram was for a Element. Is this diagram for CRV also?

I bought the goodyear belt and 3rd party tensioner as a kit from rockauto, they were about $90 together, if I recall correctly.
Forewarning: One of the tensioner bolts is a real head-scratcher. have a narrow head ratchet driver, a decent set of extensions, a u-joint adapter, and lots of different length 12mm sockets on hand.

You meant to tell everyone you use a 1/2 drive to rotate the tension and a 9/16 wrench with that ! You get a C on this video and it took a long time to take off the splash cover. But you meant well, thanx

I got 2005 crv and it has done 110k (kms) and it was badly cracked so its worth while checking. It took me 3 hours to struggle. Poor engineering. If just would have 5mm more room it would reduce time down to 30 min.

Actually the "splash shield" on a 2006 Honda CRV is held by 2 "clips" or buttons...and a lower "tab" that can come out with a twist of the splash shield.
Another tip: as seen in "another UTube" video in here somewhere....take the old belt off by connecting the old belt to the new belt with a "draw tight" band....pull the old belt down through the bottom of the engine...thereby also pulling the new belt along with it for placement....next. Then, just follow the diagram for placement and you're done....also,...one can check the "static looseness of" any belt driven "thing" better,...when said belt if off the things being driven.
Make a mental note of what may be becoming "sloppy" now...before putting on the new belt...then order it via the Internet...watch a UTube vid. on it's placement...then replace when time, temperatures are convenient. Never let an OEM do work that an 8th grader could do. It's too hard to make "ends-meat" today to give away money.
    God bless....have fun too.

Nice video....if the plastic clips break....you can buy'm at Amazon for "this car" or any other car at 1/10th the OEM price...but you buy 25-50 at a time...if you have more than one car...or trade cars in, etc...just buy bag of 50...that'll last for years...give them away....help others. No one gets "helped" by being duped at the OEM dealerships....accept the owners and the factory.
