Your trick of putting the belt on from the bottom instead of the top by the tensioner is GENIUS! I struggled with the top method for hours - just could not get it. Whata poor design! NO room to work in there! I got the belt on in 5 minutes with your bottom method.

This video really demonstrated the best means to get at a tricky tensioner. Most recommend removing the engine mounts etc.. very unnecessary. I have to say thank you for guiding me through a repair that I was dreading. It wasn't fun, but the method and steps presented were absolutely spot on. Top notch presentation.

Another alternative to get a new belt on smoothly: 1. use a strong string to pull the handle of the ratchet to hold the tensioner off. 2. get the pulley of the power steering off(but keep the mount get on well). 3. get the belt on the pulley well. 4. snug the central bolt for the pulley. 5. use ratchet to tight it. 6. all is done.
the reason is that the new belt is very tight and very hard to try to pull on the pulley even you make the tensioner completely off. hope it helpful for you.

Worst car I've ever worked on.
My CRV is at 182,000 miles. And I know the belt needs to be replaced. But based on the sound coming from the tensioner I'm sure its ready as well. This was an excellent video. Very clear and informative.

Nice tip on putting back the serpentine belt: Losen the tensioner pulley from the bottom and then slip the serpentine belt on to the crankshaft pulley.
I would have to try this way when it's time for me to replace the belt, and its tensioner. You are going to take the side cover off anyways. Thx

Why replace the whole assembly when they sell just the pulley ? Seems like you could put the replacement pulley on at 6:25 in the vid , then reassemble. I'm no mechanic , so I need advice. Thanks.

Wow Sue, I never realized that the serpentine belt removal tool goes in from the bottom of the car. I was having a hard time figuring that out when I had to replace my alternator this past week. I ended up getting a 14mm offset box wrench in combination with a wrench extender and that did the trick.
I love this channel. I have one question, I saw on final step tensioner head pulled clockwise to set the belt on it place, and it seem fast and easy, so why she didn't do same way when she removeed the belt?

this video was very helpful in replacing the power steering pump.
I thought the tension pulley was bad on my CRv so I took it off to check the bearing. It turns out the alternator is making noise even though it is functioning ok. So I put in a new alternator. Not too difficult.
But now I have to remove the power steering pump to reach the nut to reinstall the pulley. I'm surprised by the loose nut in the back rather than a threaded mounting bracket. I didn't know.. and spent a lot of time trying to start the bolt into an empty hole. AND very tight working space. ohhhhhh my aching back !

wonderful vid... tells everything you need to know... My god, it would easier crawling in thru the tail pipe! Idlers are maintenance items. The engineers should have thought about that during design.. Anyway, I now know what I need to in order to get the job done THANKS
I’ve had RUclips since I was 15 and this is my first comment ever, all I seen was the motor mount way and was kinda nervous to do all that this is definitely the way super easy and simple with minimal tools just need patience and follow step by step
Overall this was a good video. On my 2006 CRV, I had a serp tension assemble replaced 30k miles ago and the pulley bearing started screaming. So, I replaced pulley only. Gates makes one. A couple of things, on my 2006 made in UK, the tensioner pulley was a 15mm not a 14mm as in this video. In final, I could not get my finger behind the pulley and motor to keep the back nut from falling out so I slide a 3" putty knife behind and between until the bolt ran into the nut.

Great video and very descriptive. My one complaint is that you don’t mention that when removing the pulley there is a non-captivated nut that is guaranteed to fall out and get lost somewhere. Those sorts of details are very useful to novices.
Did it just like this on a 2008 crv, took me 1.5 hrs with a helper. Getting the belt back on is the roughest part.
Note that if you're just replacing the idler pulley, there is no need to remove the power steering pump though it does help to remove the power steering fluid bracket (another two 10mm bolts).
tensioner itself is designed to wear out (150KMi)... so replacing the pulley alone is a waste of time

I always trust a video more when I see a snap on socket on their ratchet. Us in the rust belt know the value of time not dealing with rounding fasteners off 👍 watched for the torque spec, so thank you for providing it

Great video. So a 1/4" ratchet fits on the tensioner pulley! Did not know that. I know a 3/8" won't fit. Good info on not losing that tensioner pulley mounting nut. ALSO: "Once tensioner bottoms out, another 1/4" nudge with the wrench" Sounds good to me for 41 ft/lbs. I guess a 4th gen 2012-16 CRV is the same except you remove the idler instead of steering pump.. Good stuff! Thanks!

I have a 2005 CRV and to remove the tensioner I had no choice that to remove the motor mount that is just in front of it. I had no room to put any ratchet so the job took longer and get a long socket to remove bolts on the motor mount. This vehicle is a little different that my 2005

This method is by far the easiest. Why do all the other install videos require removal of motor mount to access tensioner bolts. Is that for a different model maybe?

If the tensioner is weak will that let the belt slip when driving through puddles in the rain?

That looks like a custom tool for the tensioner. Took me all day to figure it out and with help
Great video! But I didn't take out the pulley to get to that one back bolt. I just took off the engine mount, jack the engine up a little and I got enough space to put a socket and a ratchet
if you take the plastic flap out of the wheel well you can easily access the lower pulleys to thread the belt.
I dont know what year is this car, but you have more room than my 05 CRV. The motor mount is my way for the tensioner pulley, in this one you have more room there

Do you have to remove the pump? Of get away with putting a new belt on with out the removal of the pump?
It's easy to put on without removing anything. Just move the power steering pump out of the way like she did first, then use tie the new belt to the old one and use it to snake it down to the bottom. You can then thread the new belt.
I did it on a 09 honda crv and i removed the motor mount to save my knuckles and prevent me from cussing a storm and making tools take flight into the bushes
Edit.. i failed to mention that i replaced the water pump and belt tensioner pulley

I did mine today without taking off the power steering pump. I just remove the reservoir only, and use 14 mm close wrench on the bolt and the open end connect to 1/2 in torch wrench with 2 ft handle.

Anyone know why im constantly leaking power steering fluid on my belt and everything else on that side? I replaced both hoses on the reservoir and the high pressure hose that goes to the top of the power steering pump over the engine to the back. Maybe the part where the reservoir hose and return hose connect? Its in such a tight area and bolted to the frame its almost impossible to check.
How is the tensioner tool attached to the ratchet?

I have a 2011 Honda CRV. About 90% of the time on my first start of the day I get a grirrr sound that lasts about a second or two. If the engine is warm it wont happen . Is this my Tensioner ? I took it to a Honda dealership and left it over night and wouldn't you know it, it didn't happen there. They told me it may be the timing chain may have stretched and to keep the oil full. The oil is full and it still happens. It seems to be worse (sound lasts longer and louder) the longer the car sits. I asked if this sound could damage the engine and they said no. I use this car for work, so can't afford to have the engine blow. Any help would be grateful. Thanks.

I learned a trick to hold that nut in back either put super glue or piece of paper so the in back of the pulley will stay while installing the bolt and the pulley
It’s easier if you take the engine mount off and Jack up the engine a bit so you don’t take off the pulley and u have way more room to get in there
sounds good, Where would you place the jack so you dont do damage to the engine?
@@whiskkers9291 you don't want to Jack from the oil pan, because if something goes wrong you mess up the oil pickup and that can render the engine destroyed

@@checkforfleas9452 the arm has spring on a shaft when shaft wears enough it sends belt into engine and shreds belt do as a whole and oem only 12 yrs on my oem get another 12 yrs China 3months

How much does job like that cost from a local mechanic?
I noticed nobody ever mentions what year their CRV is. This doesn’t always work for every CRV model. Some power steering pumps are actually attached to the tensioner… Case in point...2003 models

Why don't u remove the wheel and fire wall. Make it easier, gotta get mine done.idler puller, belt tensioner and new belt.
