Eric, I like your style of video! With the added words like 12mm etc. That helps a lot! I've done hundreds of those over the years. Some are easy, others not so easy. Every car is different. Many thumbs up from me, Eric! Great video! 👍👍 👍
I think I've watched this video like 12 times already because I'm doing my Element's starter, serpentine belt, tensioner, and alternator all at once and I need to keep all of the fasteners straight. Thanks 👍
Quick tip. If this ever happens to you, there's no need to replace the entire tensioner assembly. You can simply unscrew the 14MM bolt in the center of the pulley and change just the pulley, that's what is making the noise. As usual, an OEM pulley is ideal. The part number for the pulley is 31180-RAA-A01 and it is currently about $30 from Honda.
I wondered about doing this as there seems to be no problem with the tension part; it seems that my problem is a bearring issue with the pulley. I even wondered if pressing out the old bearring and installing a new one could be done without too much fuss on a 2003 Honda CRV.
@@gruberhoffman If it was mine, I'd just get a new OEM pulley and be done with it. Replacing the bearing separately is theoretically possible, but in my opinion, the difficulty of finding one of the exact right size and the potential for a problem if something goes wrong is too high to take the risk when a new pulley is only about $30. If it fails, you will be stranded and ruin the engine if you don't stop right away before it overheats.
Man this video saved my butt, the stealership wanted 530 bucks for this with parts...i got the whole tensioner ans a belt for a hundo. Looks like it can break four more times before ice reached the dealers price!!! Eric youre the man!!!! Thanks for the video, my 06 crv never sounded so saucy!!!!
Nice job, Eric....you are keeping me dry and out of the rain that's falling here in Marbella, Spain.....Have followed you for a couple of years now(a late subscriber) and you have been inspirational in making me want to fix my old Jag....and my daughters 4 X 4 and my VW Van and my....I could go on!!
I miss the days when a "belt tensioner" was a prybar, a 1/2" drive ratchet, or hammer handle. And I had to WALK to the bus stop, uphill BOTH ways, in the snow! 😁
I love your videos. I'm subscribed to both channels and always watch every thing you put up. I may never do a tensioner on a K series Honda, but you're videos are just that entertaining to where I don't care. Regardless of the topic I do always get something out of it however. Great work.
My impression, and experience is that a lot of the after market repair parts don't hold up well. Even some of the factory repair parts. Thanks for the video!!!
Eric you seem like a dude I’d have a beer with. Thanks for all the videos and great info. You have helped me get through Yamaha Marine University. I always use you and Scanner Danners videos for studying and reference material. I’m a avid subscriber and always like your vids. Thanks again for taking the time to do all this. You are a damn good tech and instructor. Mike ,Stillwater Marine ATL Georgia.
I’ve done this before on my previous 05 Accord in a Walmart parking lot with Walmart tools LOL. Now that I have a driveway and higher quality tools, I needed more confidence to give this job another shot on my 14’ CRV haha. Funny how it goes when you’re young and blindly confident
I had to do this to my old doge dakota. The ball bearings here falling out of the pulley. All i did though was change the bearing as i didnt feel like paying for an entire assembly. I learned that tick from you.
I am glad that my truck engine isn't that cramped with my 5.4 Liter engine. I saw why you had to remove the one pump out of the way just to get that part off.
Great Video and glad I watched. Same Caahh (Boston) and I have to get to that VTEC screen/filter behind the Power Steering pump and now I at least know what I'm going to come across. Thanks ETCG
Engage! LOL. Thanks, Eric! That was educational AND entertaining, as usual! Thankfully, I won't have to deal with the engine mount on my MDX when I will be replacing the tensioner, so it's going to be much easier for me.
I'm surprised ETCG didn't bust out the T-handles for some of those fasteners. Although the engine stuff can be super tight. Thanks for the video as always!
I did it without removing engine mount, just removed tensioner's pulley and it gives room to remove tensioner, then did backwards: tensioner, pulley, PSP. It's making work easier and faster.
One thing that wasn't emphasized enough is how long that 17mm stud is. As a DIYer who buys specialty tools ONLY when necessary, I don't have a set of EXTRA deep metric sockets. 75mm deep is needed. The ONLY socket I could find, that wasn't part of a +$150 set,was CTA Tools 1717 Extra Deep Socket - 17mm. Also for a DIYer to do what you did, they'd need to jack the car up, remove the left front wheel, lower the car on a jack stands THEN support the engine with the jack. I did mine without removing the motor mount. I tried a dozen times to get the belt where it needed to be and was stymied each time by a twist or slack I couldn't see that stopped me from being able to get it over the last pulley. Finally I folded the belt nearly flat and shoved it down between the tensioner and water pump with a stick. Then I pulled it down over the main crank, temporarily it looped over the power steering pump to keep it in line and couldn't fall or get twisted while I got the belt around AC compressor. Removed it from the power steering pump to get it around the alternator pulley, then went for the tensioner and power steering pulley.
I have an 05 CR-V with the same engine and I have some hesitation when going around 35-40mph. I'm going to clean the maf sensor and throttle body to see if that helps. I also want to replace the vtek spool gasket and screen. Would be awesome to see a video on changing those out. 😁. My issues could just stem from the damn thing having 313,400 miles! 😮
Eric, I need your help...I watch this video on RUclips about how to tell which wheel bearing is bad on a car and I determined the front right based on this guys video. The noise goes away when turning right and gets worse when turning left. I replaced the front right on my CB7 which as you know is no easy task and now I have the same symptoms but it has always sounded like it’s coming from the front left. Should I just replace the front left wheel bearing and eat the cost or could it be something else. I should post a video so you can see it, or hear it actually.
Would you suggest just changing the pulley? I bought a used auto-tensioner for my K20 Jackson Racing Supercharger setup and thought I could get by with just changing the pulley.
@Ericthecarguy i changed the tensioner assembly its all quiet until i put it on Drive and move the steering wheel that the new tensioner rattles and makes noise. What do you think i did wrong.
I have a 2017 Accord 6 speed Manuel I have had to have my tensioner fixed twice since I've owned the car. It would make a loud whining sound. I have the new direct injection K Series. I'm not sure what my opinion is on the new direct injection K Series
Can these cause loss of power at idle and while driving? My crv 2010 has an odd sounding whine when it looses power during idle that I can hear happening exactly when the idle drops low. Wondering if belt tensioner/pulley being bad can torque down on the motor while running ??
Hey Eric what is that hood light mount thing you are using called. It looks really handy and I would like to purchase one because I find myself working on my car at night a lot and i dont have a garage!! Thanks!
Not a lot of room to work there! Thanks for showing us how to get creative. Reminds me how spoiled I am with my 1994 Buick LeSabre when I did this job. TONS of room around the engine for the most part. Eric, can you comment at all on the recent story about the young man in the Cincinnati area who was trapped by the third row seat in his 2004 Honda Odyssey? I know you really like Honda products, and you might not have access to your 2001 anymore, but just curious.
Wait till you see the videos on the Mini I'm working on. www.ericthecarguy.com/blog/2145-april-2018-newsletter As for the story, I just read that this morning. I was trying to wrap my head around it as well. I had the same van if you remember. The only thing I can think of is that it was a freak accident involving the 3rd row seat. I'm thinking somehow he got trapped under it and it locked into position. A horrible way to go, not to mention his poor parents. My 2012 Odyssey has a different rear seat set up than the previous generations. Perhaps they saw the danger and made the correction. My heart goes out to his family. The real failure there was the rescue response. They simply didn't get to him in time. He called twice!
100% agree with you Eric, TWICE he called. I just can't fathom them actually being there WHILE he was in there trapped. The MINIseries is going to be great, and that was a cool way to use the words, lol!
Hey did u notice or feel the alternator or power steering punt pulls hot very hot if so what cause that I change my belt and belt tensioner do u think the tension have too much tension and how do I adjust it
I did the same thing with my rsx but now the belt isn't lined up straight, it squeaks while driving when its reset, then at high rpms the belt jumps and then isn't aligned right with the grooves. Any ideas?
Hey Guys. NEED SOME HELP. I stripped the center bolt on the tensioner and the 2 side to side bolts are good... Its a bit snug but i see it let loose when i was torquing and my hand slipped and there it went.. What do you guys recommend?? Does that center bolt require to much torque its a bit snug on there....
Hey Eric. So I replaced my belt tensioner but accidentally broke the long middle bolt. Is it safe enough to not have that bolt? If not do you know where I could get a replacement bolt?
So how's that Dayco tensioner holding up? I have to do the belt tensioner on my 03 RSX Base, and the Dayco is much less expensive than the Continental, but not a lot of reviews.
+EricTheCarGuy well howdy do well you come back now you hear we do love the them videos of your down south. I love spring nice place and people Dallas is too noisy
You dont have to take the whole motor mount out just the three bolts on top lift the bracket off and use a small rachet with a 12 long drive to get to that lower tensioner bolt. Remember to support the engine first.
Did you use OEM tensioner? I tried replacing the tensioner but the belt keeps shifting over 2 teeth idk what the problem could be. Yes he belt is the right one. Yes the tensioner is new. Yes the belt is on the right path. No nothing wiggles it just slides off after 20-30 minutes of use

People like to watch Eric video when he repair Honda only. Thanks for the come back Honda repair video :)
Thanks Eric. Once again your videos has saved me when servicing the wifes 260 000 km 2002 crv beater.
This looks a lot easier than it used to be on my 2003 Acura TL.
Great video.

I'm happy to hear that! Thank you for watching and for your comment.
I like the changes you made to how you edit with the bolt sizes and multiple camera angles.
Thanks for showing the difference between a new and old serpentine belt tensioner.
Always timeless help. Thank you for helping me for so many years
Like the new camera work. Breaking out the old air tools for this one too:)
I miss the days when a "belt tensioner" was a prybar, a 1/2" drive ratchet, or hammer handle. And I had to WALK to the bus stop, uphill BOTH ways, in the snow! 😁
hell yeah man really appreciate these K-series videos.

It's good to see that you're trying new things. The new thumbnails really pop. Good video Eric.
Thanks for noticing.

Extremely highly informative video. Thanks Mr.
Great video and fun to watch.Take care Eric.

Ignorant internet fools would. This is a greatly helpful video.

Wait till you see what I have to do to the Mini I'm working on now to do the clutch and fix some oil leaks.
This spring I want to do the thermostat, water pump, tensioner, and drive belt on my CRV. Thanks for all the help.
I have videos on all of that for the K series except the water pump. See the description. Good luck.
Also applies for Acura RSXs - same engine mount and everything
“C’mon you can do it! Find your home!” Love it! 😄
As always Eric - thank YOU so much!!! Best wishes. Rick
Those Gp sockets are awesome!
Great Video and glad I watched. Same Caahh (Boston) and I have to get to that VTEC screen/filter behind the Power Steering pump and now I at least know what I'm going to come across. Thanks ETCG
That's a pain in the ass to get to.
as always excellent Video, Thank You
I like how the new videos are coming along. Since you are doing lots of Honda's mind doing a water pump install on an H22A4. Mine needs to be replaced
Aside from the DOHC, it's the same as this procedure. ruclips.net/video/r08PToVy4f0/видео.html
Watched, liked, sub'd. Well done. Has anyone ever figured out the mid 80s Hondas? Dual carbs and all the vacuum lines were a nightmare!
Thank you! I've worked on plenty of mid 80's Hondas. I've also owned 3 of them. Not that bad really, but tedious.
Love your videos man
Excellent work Eric.
Greetings from New Zealand.
Mzu 278 glad to see another NZ veiwer 💪🔥👌

Hello New Zealand!
One of the first Hondas where I think thats not easy. Damm this is close.Love the old Civic EKs.
Hey it's I your friendly long old almost 4 years subscriber .
Happy to see you.
Dude makes this look easy.... I’m about to go get me some parts! Lol
Engage! LOL. Thanks, Eric! That was educational AND entertaining, as usual! Thankfully, I won't have to deal with the engine mount on my MDX when I will be replacing the tensioner, so it's going to be much easier for me.
Yea, you have a bit more room. Good luck and thanks for the comment.
That is realy great video
Great video, thanks 🔧👍🏼
We got your back Eric
Thanks!
Awesome as always. You may my diy life easier and cheaper, that’s for sure.
I'm surprised ETCG didn't bust out the T-handles for some of those fasteners. Although the engine stuff can be super tight. Thanks for the video as always!
Not sure if I had them when I originally shot the video over a year ago.
Glad to see you still posting videos. Any plans on more fixing it forward? Or any repairs besides your own cars haha
You need to read my monthly newsletters. Here's April's www.ericthecarguy.com/blog/2145-april-2018-newsletter
Like watching a surgeon do an appendectomy. Bolt sizes and camera angles take extra effort and I for one appreciate it.
That safety glasses thing, immediate like
Nice Eric love the video

Buen video amigo 👍🏻
looking at this makes reemplacing the tensioner in my Grand Marquis a walk in the park.
THANK YOU THANK YOU i already did mine but THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Happy to help. ;)

now you wanna make this vid when i had a serpentine problem last week
Sorry.
EricTheCarGuy its ok, youre still my idol, love ya eric
Thanks for the video. Ever have to replace the main drive deal? I've got an oil leak that I'm pretty certain is coming from there.
Good job
did this on our 2004 TSX, was a lot easier since it had enough room so you dont have to remove the PS pump and engine mount
Thanks!

Hello Algeria!

Where do you jack up a 92 foxbody? Also do you place the jack stands on the pinch welds or else where? Thanks
Can the just the black Belt pulley be replace. and not the complete mounting bracket and pulley?

Is that Dayco tensioner holding up? I have to replace the tensioner on a 2009 CRV. Thanks Eric
The job doesn't look to difficult. Nice work Eric.
too
Oh sorry about the grammatical error Marcus. Yet another RUclips grammar teacher takes off points from my comment once again.
American, as in a Subaru? 😁 My Silverado was assembled in Oshawa, Canada, with Mexican, Taiwanese, and Chinese parts ... 🤭
is there any possible chance that you have a part number for the belt tensioner please.
Hi Eric! Great video. Have you ever replaced the water pump on the element and better yet is there a video?
No, but it's the only thing I haven't replaced on this engine. Perhaps it will fail next. ;)
What’s the torque spec on tensioner pulley and ep3 pulley on builds? Are they both 16ft pounds?
Are you going to do a oil pan replacement video? , all Honda Element have the same problems, it always rusted and corroded
Gooood!
Greeting from Houston Texas big dawg city yup 🤠
Hello Texas! I used to live in Spring. Also Dallas.
+EricTheCarGuy well howdy do well you come back now you hear we do love the them videos of your down south. I love spring nice place and people Dallas is too noisy
Southmainauto is killing in on his repair videos, what do you think Eric?
He's a great technician and we've become friends in the past few years. ruclips.net/video/77HZcOYzPWs/видео.html
Vladimir Putin ya
You dont have to take the whole motor mount out just the three bolts on top lift the bracket off and use a small rachet with a 12 long drive to get to that lower tensioner bolt. Remember to support the engine first.
Question. I pulled my tensioner pulley off and now cannot get the bolt back on. Is there a nut that holds it on?
Yes
Did you use OEM tensioner? I tried replacing the tensioner but the belt keeps shifting over 2 teeth idk what the problem could be. Yes he belt is the right one. Yes the tensioner is new. Yes the belt is on the right path. No nothing wiggles it just slides off after 20-30 minutes of use
