I live in Denmark and we have chinese cars available here. All I can say is that..
Chinese cars are the best thing that has happened for the middle class in a long time. Finally premium cars for affordable prices with quality materials and superior warranty.
Unlike the overpriced, half plastic, poor warranty and boring european cars.
Legacy autos in US should be very afraid.
Anyone that appreciates freedom of speech and personal liberties should be afraid. China as the global leader = changes in influence and governments is one of them. I hope that car was worth you losing your freedoms in the future.
I'm an over 40 American and I want a Chinese EV - specifically the Xiaomi SU7.
And you will hand over 50% to your own Gov't , boy that's some tax slug they are making you pay, and most likely getting on a loan, that's like pay, pay, pay, great for all the rich corporate leading bodies of the USA, it's a win, win
@sunlitey2765
RIGHT.

The spying narrative is false; US govt doesn't want competition - Tesla is cutting jobs and Rivian isn't doing well now.

@@maggiechan33 That's great to have the cash, but it would have to hurt to throw so much money away in taxes, sorry tariffs, It only show the true costs of manufacturing a car in the USA, we here in Australia killed off our own car industry due to no investment in making them cheaper, even the yanks pulled the plug on Holden, and now it's come home to roost for themselves, they can't say they didn't see it coming, they will only survive if they invest in tech for the car industry they might survive but if they thing that the Federal govt will protect them and things don't change which means jobs have to go, the industry will collapse on it's self, the investment has got to happen now.
What privacy? Are they saying the Chinese government is interested in how many ears of corn I bought from the supermarket today? Pathetic.

I live in Mexico and chinese cars are becoming very popular (quality, technology & price). Young Mexicans are quite informed and know the Chinese brands, models and electric technology. In my generation (61 years old) there are still many myths and disinformation around EVs. The BYD seagull is beginning to sell really well. In the US -I have several friends there- a generational gap between boomers and millennials is widening in several fronts: Climate Change, US wars (student protests against Israel), inequality…and seemingly EVs.

You aren't staying current with the technology, are you?
Trump can be easily bought. So Chinese vehicles would fare better under him.
i'm in my 40s and been living in US most my life. i quite frankly don't care which country manufactures it. if the EV is UNDER $15k i want to buy it. i'll buy three... one for each of my kids. my daily commute is 5 to 10 miles per day. i don't care about range. i own an ICE vehicle for long roadtrips. i just want something super cheap for my daily mindless errands and never have to pump up at the gas station.
Hybrid would work for you in for those range. If everything is produced in countries with cheap labor you could consider your job outsourced. Why pay any Americans when people can hire foreigners for cheap with strong US dollar?
5-10 miles per day you rarely need to go to gas station already.
No it wouldn't
@@Trust_but_VerifyIf Americans earn three times as much, but also pay three times as much for what they buy, they're not necessarily ahead. And if that puts you in a higher tax bracket, you could be behind. Given that most Americans aren't saving, there's little benefit to earning more only to spend more for what you need.
I liked my PHEV, but nowadays, hybrids feel like paying for two cars (gasoline and electric) and getting one. The short range vehicles available in the UK and in China seem adequate for the original poster, and some short range Chinese vehicles are apparently made with sodium ion batteries, which should become crazy cheap. Even LFP batteries, for 30 kWh, are costing only about USD 1500ish. It's hard to save enough in a smaller battery pack to afford an engine, etc., so hybrids for short range are making less and less sense. What's needed is the idea that enough people in America are fine with 100 mile range, like many in the UK and elsewhere, especially if you include second vehicles.
@@bearcubdaycare What is the benefit for people having a 100 mile range EV vs a cheap ICE car since it's a low annual mileage car, the maintenance would also be much lower.
@@Trust_but_Verify "Hybrid would work for you in for those range". well.. yes. and full EV will work even better for 5-10 mile trips. as mentioned, i already own an ICE vehicle for longer trips. to get a hybrid would be 50% redundant, paying for gas functions i will not use. can US even produce a hybrid for less than $15k? unfortunately no. the US is losing the affordability EV space.

It's due to labor unions, and because Trump wanted to place tariffs on anything out of China. People would want to buy a Chinese car simply because they would (correctly) expect them to be cheaper.
"Privacy concerns" is simply yellow peril racism. We know for a fact Tesla spied on car owners. Is that a concern anyone expresses over buying a Tesla? I'd strongly consider buying a Chinese EV as long as they're reliable, as no one in America seems interested in making budget friendly EVs.
Kia/Hyundai and toyota are selling EV's here and are getting tax incentives to build battery factories and ev factories in the US. Other Japanese and Korean companies are building battery factories. They are supplying the batteries for VWs US built EV's. Chinese companies are licensing battery tech to Ford and GM for us battery factories. Vinfast is selling EV'S in the US. Are those "yellow peril racism" too? The tesla privacy problems and the ones from every other manufacturer are why I don't want to buy any modern car and there is a movement toward cracking down on those problems. I definitely don't want to give the Chinese communist party easy unregulated access to that stuff or a potential vector to knock out charging networks or screw with the power grid.
People are stopped from affordable EV options & forced into more problems as if inflation & more wasn't enough for families trying to just survive.
Good Luck to Everyone 👍
We have been using Google and Windows, aggregating usage behaviour worldwide for decades, all these ethics can be accepted. If by foreign entity, it will be national security. All these political propaganda, only those below 40 are wiser.
pretty sure one reason for the 125% tariff is because they, automakers, already saw this poll or something similar and lobbied the USA government, it just coincides with the anti-china sentiment.
So what percentage exactly is the tarrif? The media reports it as 100%, Sam in this post states 102.5% and you claim 125%!!!!
Which of you are incorrect? All of you? FFS

People think they live in a democracy they do not
Competitions brings innovations and in the end consumers gets the most out of it.
Definitely.
What's to spy? This is simple economics: Chinese EVs are good & cheap; US EVs are dear and crap, can't compete.
No, they want an inexpensive, capable and desirable EV's no matter where they come from...right now they come from china.
If I had to buy an EV it would be a MG or BYD and I'm 63.
There's a HUGE difference between "might consider"/"definitely consider" and "wanting to buy". People "might consider" Mexican or Italian or Chinese food for supper. That's totally different than being very hungry and "wanting to eat".
And is isn't Chinese and Italian food now very popular? :)
I cannot imagine what China would find interesting about me. It's my country of Australia that would be more interested. This Western paranoia regarding China has become like a parody of itself. So infantile.
I’m American, I have no problem purchasing a Chinese brand vehicle, but only if the final assembly is in North or South America :-) If people are all that concerned about privacy, they wouldn’t be purchasing Chinese built phones which are every bit as sophisticated as an automobile.
I live in Indonesia, I grew up with protectionism in auto sector. The only automakers we have in Indonesia are Japanese ones who are assembling their cars in Indonesia. Because there were no competition due to high tariffs, for a long time the cars we have were craps that only very luxurious few have airbags, while at the same time we paid probably 20-30% higher price than neighboring countries.
Hey Im 69 but I want clean affordable transportation and the best technology. Just like cheap flat screen TVs, USA just cant compete. Meanwhile, real wages are still falling behind inflation thanks to genius monetary policies.
Yes. Because job salaries have not kept up with inflation… less money = a desire to buy cars we can afford.
Obviously Biddden introduced the tariffs to please the unions who psy for his election campaign.
How does it help U.S. unions. The tariffs are against a kind of car that a China builds, a compact EV, that Detroit has refused to build and/or incapable of building to high quality.
@@radiotec76 If the Chinese are kept out then Ford and GM can keep selling ICE for years and have a chance to develop EVs eventually to avoid going bust. You or I might think that even with this help they are doomed but the unions won't see it that way.
People in North America want affordable EV’s. If the auto makers here can’t provide them the people will hang on to their old ice vehicles until they fall apart. 😂

These next 2 years will be amazing to see in regard to this cheap EV wave, and the future replies to them. Interesting times
You sound like a Uninformed American.
I’m so happy that our American government imposed a 100% tariff on excellent and affordable Chinese EVs. It is my duty to overpay for technologically outdated (except for Tesla) American cars most of which are not made in the US, which will encourage them to stay technologically outdated and expensive even longer 👏👏👏👏👏
The under 40s are the ones most adversely impacted by the costs of living crisis..Temu becoming extremely popular is a sign of the financial pressures most young people/middle class are under…and they are on TikTok and have seen how good Chinese EV actually are vs the overpriced ICE craps legacy auto offers..so why wouldn’t they want to buy Chinese EVs if they can?
I want to buy one.
Me too after 2025.
In US, your vote doesn't change the politics. You only change the party. Not everyone needs a Tesla. I am not sure these cheap EVs are any worse than the other small cars. They have to test them to prove it instead of assuming the cheap EVs are not safe. M7 self parking feature can back the car into the parking space better than most drivers.
Dude you have no idea!!! These EVs are better than the average ICE car! And we're talking the cheapest entry level ones!!!! But you guys have freedom and you guys get to choose.... For example the Dolphin or whatever its called the smallest BYD, im not upto date on the self driving stuff ie i have no idea if the Seal has it or if its a thing all EVs have.... But the Xiaomi SU7 supposedly has an excellent self drive...... even the cheapest entry SU7 is a bargain!

“76% of Americans”, or 76% of 800 people asked? 😂😂😂😂
Could there be bias because of small sample size? Sure, but almost all polls work like that. Take it or leave it.
Then let the market decides to gauge the response. Biden is too afraid of that. So imposed 100% tariff before they could arrived. 27.5% is not enough to protect his auto industry.

I want to buy a Chinese EV!
Don't be so surprised. It's called value for money. If you have a choice between 2 cars of similar specs and quality, but one costing 1/2 or even 1/3 of the other, which one would you choose?
History has proven( in Australia) that people will take a gamble on the Cheapest car. Funnily enough they have proven to be solid and reliable vehicles.
People in our neighborhood drive electric golf carts that cost as much as these Chinese EV’s !
People under 40 will buy anything sight unseen. I was once there.
Is it they want Chinese ev's, or that they are tired of paying premium prices for junk Western vehicles?
Same in europe. In my country I can buy an Xpeng G6 (model Y size car) with preimum materials, 7 year warranty and load of equipment.
For the same price as a small compact hatchback with plastic all over the place and 2 years of warranty from VW.
Its a no brainer
Most people have no idea, they just have an opinion and are happy living in their little bubble. The western world kind of sets them up to think this way, for its all about the individual and their wants and needs.
An Aussie who collected their Tesla after ordering it has recieived a nasty shock just two weeks later.
Jason C from the Sunshine Coast said he ordered a Model Y RWD for $60,900 plus on-roads.
Two weeks later he spotted a price drop of $5000 to $55,900 for the same deal.
Tesla are fckd.

On the flip side an American that was looking at an EV that was $55,000 now it's well over $100,000, and they call that, "Let's make America great again"

Was he planning on flipping it? It's good news as when he goes to buy his next Tesla it will be cheaper.
It's a no-brainer. You bring some of those inexpensive quality BYD electric vehicles over here to america and watch how fast they get sold. Does that answer your question?
Who is right here? Ed Snowden who has proven himself right or the US gov who lies! LOL
Seems like a lot of people on this thread would like to by a sub $15K Chinese car. Well, lets look at the BYD Seagull (their smallest car) . They plan to sell it in Europe for about $21K. It is 14.4 inches shorter, 2 inches narrower, and 3 inches lower than a Chevy EV Bolt (not the EUV Bolt). It has a 30 KW battery and a EPA range (converted from CLTC using ratios from an article in insideevs) of 123 miles (the Bolt's range was 259 miles). It has a 74 hp motor and a top speed of 81 mph (the Bolt had 200 hp). After the Federal Tax credit, the Chevy Bolt was $20,500 in the US. I doubt the BYD Seagull would sell well in the US for $20,000.
If BYD won't sell well in the United States, why should Biden increase taxes by 100%?
It is illogical to express fear about a unsalable product.
Bolts must be selling well in China then!
They better have factories in the West then. If not, make the tariffs 300%
It is all about Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota and Pennsylvania which is the heart of the automotive industry in the USA and the states that will decide the next presidential election.
Yep. The swing states may very well determine the election outcome.
Chinese cars , why not . Our US car makers are not interested in making small EVs . We want our EV model T . Ford only want to make big trucks at $70K plus. GM are too late to the game. Stellantis are on another planet. So who is going to supply the people with EVs we can afford . ?????
Tariffs= just disguised tax.
The options in the US for vehicles that cost less than $30k are terrible. Add to this the horrible traditional car dealer experience and you have a market ready for outside competition.
Which survey says this? The US has an oversupply of electric vehicles from Japan, Korea, Europe and the US. Most companies have cut production of electric vehicles and offering price cuts.
This is because the EVs from Japan, Korea and Europe are just terrible.
BYD's latest seal 06 can run for 2500km with a fully charged battery and a full tank of gas(17.2 gallon).
its price in China starts at 14k USD.
If we can have this kind of car in this US, there is no doubt that the demand for EV will go up like crazy.
seriously, who needs an ICE car if we can have BYD Seal 06?
It was interesting listening to Sandy Munroe, he sees similarities with US protectionism against Japanese cars in the late 70's 80's. He believes it was the demand of US consumers for smaller more fuel efficient vehicles that eventually let them in.
I see similarities too, back then the US car makers did not invest quickly enough in developing smaller fuel efficient vehicles to compete with the Japanese cars. Now, except for Tesla, the legacy makers are way behind the Chinese in EV's, so these tariffs will either give them some breathing room to catch up, or make them lazy and think they can ignore the threat of Chinese EV's.
I can 100% understand the US wanting to protect it's car industry, however it will of course effect what the American consumer pays. Sam, I think you don't get US viewers watching Chinese EV content mainly because it is just not all that interesting when you know you can't buy one in your country. I used to watch reviews on some of the very small cheap micro EV's in China, but lost interest because none of them seem to be coming to Australia. I think Australia's ridiculous and misleading ANCAP rating stops us getting any of these micro EV's.
Im an old guy too heres what I remember from the Japanese car invasion. The quality for the price was too good to pass up. The Japanese model was different we all found out in the aftermarket parts. Cheaper good quality up-front but when you had to get repairs the parts were so expensive compared to the same parts for OEM American cars. This model is now adopted by everyone to compete. That said Japanese make the most dependable ICE cars, same with their motorcycles.
@@jaaklucas1329 Good point, I remember someone telling me a similar thing. I think this is another worry legacy auto has, the lack of moving parts and maintenance in EV's is a concern for the massive ICE spare parts industry. I also suspect Japan is resentful about EV's because they have spent many years gaining the reputation for making very reliable well priced ICE vehicles. Now that the Chinese have got the jump on them with EV's and batteries I think they really don't want EV's to succeed.
Hey man, love the show. it’s one thing to say I want a Chinese car. It’s a whole Nother thing to want to have the car properly serviced locally.
US auto makers do EVERYTHING possible to prevent independent shops from servicing their vehicles. All Chinese companies need to do is make the documentation and parts easily available. They are already selling to several other countries with huge success.
@@kevinmitchell3168 Kevin... Nobody (these days) wants to be monkeying around their vehicles trying to fix things. This is NOT the norm.
I like the BYD brand because a certain prominent 93 year old american holds a huge stake in it. So there 🤷♂️
He made a fortune from that stake. Paid 225 million dollars in 2008and it was worth 6 billion dollars last year.

I would buy a MG Cyberster, I'm not anywhere near 40 at 70 my first that I paid for was a TR7 in 1977. I currently own a 65 Lotus Elan and a 75 Lotus Europa special and I daily drive a 2018 Civic type R.I'm currently considering a 2024 Tesla model 3 performance.Waiting to see if I can buy it in red and still get the $7500.00 tax break. They keep changing pricing.

Mungkin MG
Maybe MG or Wuling where Wuling is the result of collaboration with General Motors
The governments don't really care about most of that.
What they do care about is jobs.
They really want factories in North America regardless of who owns the factory.
Jobs in Michigan for the legacy brands. Imagines an image of government dragging the hand of Ford and GM telling them to come along to the EV/ cheaper reliable cars section as Ford/ GM are kicking and screaming (not wanting to go).
Well when the Optimus robot takes over the factories american products will be more competitive on the world market unfortunately a lot of people won't have a job so they can afford to buy a car. Is that a conundrum?
If the car price was like in China or Australia, possibly. But, in Mexico the BYD Seal is 888,000 Pesos or about $US53,205. Plus the Seal has the Chinese standard for charging - which means that long road trips are a hassle because of ZERO Chinese standard chargers in Mexico or US or Canada. I am certain BYD could make the change because they HAVE TO in Europe.
In Australia, all EVs, including Chinese brands, have CCS charging, except for the few and low selling Japanese models.
This is a strange claim. Sam is quoting a survey but not saying who did it or where, or what the data sample size was. I’ve seen surveys that say the complete opposite, that 75% of Americans don’t want an EV. The summary was that they’re not anti EV, they’re just simply not interested in owning an EV. It’s just a personal choice thing.
You're spot on. Most Americans are holding out to see where all this is heading. All I can say is, this whole EV push and mandating could spell a disaster for the west and a boon for China. Reality is, the people in power don't care if you can afford a new car or not, it's all about the net zero. It seems small details like charging infrastructure, affordability are left for the peasants to work out. We are run by clowns sorry to tell you, tariffs just like sanctions will only hurt the middle class as its always has.
I'm a geriatric american and am stoked about all these cars. Its fun to try new things, been buying american or japanese cars for decades, eager to experience a car from china, korea, anywhere really. I say experience rather than buy because it all comes down to the test drive first. The only problem is my model 3 has 70k miles on it and still looks new and has cost me zero in maintenance, 190 kw-hr per mile lifetime. I friggin love how cheap it costs per mile and all these new cars are gonna cost more per mile which isn't fun for a guy who takes pride in penny pinching.
My main criteria are design, technology, performance and price. If that's Chinese, bring 'em in. Fact is that Tesla meets nearly all these criteria (particularly technology) so for now, they're my choice. BTW, I'm over 40 (90).
Chinese EV is affordable in China. Malaysia is levying high tariff on imported car, doubling the price when sold in Malaysia.
Wait till after 2025
*Well what is the point of ban them if no one wants them 🤭*
Speak for yourself Im dying to buy one , even though my last ev was s Audi, Audi sucks . Taking the Chinese route
It's the Biden administration trying to appear to be tough in an election year.
I'd take a 10k BYD any day! That's less than 250 a month for a few years
If Chinese cars spying is a concern just make the US versions with no ability to connect you the Internet. Updates will only be updated at the dealer just like legacy cars.
ASML AND TSMC has a back door. Is US concerned about that ?. Shove privacy up your woot woot.
I want the $10k byd dolphin! 🇺🇸
First, it's the Seagull that's $10k, not the Dolphin. Second, do you realize that car is the size of a postage stamp? It's funny reading these comments from people claiming that they would buy a cheap, ultra small car, yet the Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit, which are both larger than the Seagull, were both discontinued due to lack of sales. Third, it's $10k in China. Even if you add the old 27.5% tariff, and then include shipping, and the distinct possibility that BYD would jack up the price for an American audience, that car would sell for closer to $20k than $10k.
is that extra 10k added value in the car fuck no...Its government trash tax...
100 percent I ain’t buying an ev if I can’t buy a Nio

Same here I ain’t going back to stupid wires after converting everything to cordless!
I'll drive my ice car until the tires fall off waiting on buying a NIO ET5
Consumers are interested in buying a product that is value for money, not because of politics.
And the people you are describing are so dumb as to the facts of the world that for short-term cheap products they will throw away their individual freedom which China does not allow
The report said almost half of under 40 year olds would consider buying a Chinese EV so more wouldn’t
I am 75 years old and I would buy two electric cheap Chinese cars. I am tired of checking oil, radiators and belts on vehicles, ti include transmission fluid. If you drive one you will never go back to ice cars and trucks.
It might take another 25 years before EVs will be mainstream
but it WILL happen, regardless of the luddites opinions.
Me too! Hate ice maintenance and repairs!
You can buy an used EV fairly cheap now.
Ice is junk
I'm on the ground in the US and none of my friends and associates would buy a Chinese car. A few would buy an EV when the issues are fixed.

It's pure economics. Most of people under 40 have much less money than older people. Still most of Americans hate Chinese cars, and only buy them if they are significantly cheaper, and they would still have negative perception of their quality, whether justified or not.
For young people, just about everything they ever bought was made in China, except cars. So for them, American/Japanese/European made cars are the exception and they are expensive. South Korean cars are fine and a bit cheaper. Why wouldn't they want cars made in China?
I would definitely buy one for the right price and if it had good features and a quality build.
