  • Fake engine noises and fake exhaust tips are on many modern cars. Today I will show you how fake noises are added to a car, what the system ACTUALLY sounds like, and how to disable the Soundaktor on MK7.5 Golf R. This will apply to other VWs as well. Turning the Soundaktor down, or off will give you an idea of what the car actually sounds like. We also output test the Soundaktor because it sounds cool. #humblemechanic #howto #DIY

    I don't use the soundaktor, personally, but I don't think people really understand what it's for. It's designed to give the driver more feedback, allowing you to hear where you are in the revs (rather than keep looking at a rev counter) , the vibrations also add to the feel. It's not necessarily "fake", just amplified.
    They should've made an option to turn it off fully in the drive modes, instead of just eco.

    • @sqike001ton
      @sqike001ton 5 лет назад +2

      or you could just put a little less sound damping foam in the car if you have to add the noise back in you doing something wrong

    • @alanday5209
      @alanday5209 5 лет назад +2

      @@sqike001ton that would affect everyone though, not everyone wants more noise. The manufacturers have to build the vehicle to suit most end users, not just gear heads. Also, as I stated, it's not only about the noise. The vibrations also give feedback, similar to the way harder bushings and motor mounts do.
      Luckily we have a solid after market.

  • @miketeeveedub5779

    Calling it "fake sound" is just wrong though.
    Because this system in the Golf doesn't generate anything that isn't there in the first place, but just amplifies the frequencies the engine generates. It makes it louder as it really is, but its not something entirely different.
    Fake sound would be just playing a V8 soundtrack while you're driving a four cylinder, like Ford does.

  • @ryanthomastew
    @ryanthomastew 5 лет назад +5

    I think a better description for this is "Amplified Engine Noise". The reason I say that is because the sound isn't fake - it's the actual engine sound but the system amplifies it via structural vibrations.
    Fake would be pumping in V8 sound or VR6 sound that doesn't originate from the 2.0T.

    I've been thinking about adding my own version of this to my Mk4 12V Wagon. I drove around with the hatch propped open (large boxes in back) and the sound was incredible, but I got noxious fumes in the cabin too. I thought about putting a microphone near the tailpipe under the car, and wiring it into an auxiliary jack for the stereo. So, it wouldn't be "fake" sounds, just more of the real stuff in the cabin on a volume knob.

      I imagine problem with mic is the road, tires and wind noises, but maybe with a lot of trials and the right mic insulation it works, also take into consideration the rainy days if you have any in your city

    You actually hear it the most at lower RPM. Go in eco and just spam that upshift paddle and floor the throttle (without hitting the clicking kickdown). You’ll feel the whole cabin vibrate af. When turned off, this vibrate doesnt exist. Thats where the big comparison is

    turbo 4 pots never sound good sadly.. regardless if you have it set to 100 percent or 0; if anything having that fake 5 cylinder noise pumped in to the cabin makes the sound a bit more interesting. Great video tho, and love the colour!

    the stickers/labels being placed on car side windows these days is getting out of hand. why, why, why??? That's the biggest one yet I've seen on a car. I wonder how much cheaper the car would cost w/o the soundakator? It is a zero value adder yet it's there adding complication and disrupting the natural/pure essence of the car. Thanks Charles, info appreciated.

    Great tip. I never understood why this was added. Designing a quality exhaust system with a great sound should be part of any performance car design. I guess soon none of this will matter when we go electric. We will be adding this to cars to remember the way the classics sounded. Imagine using VAGCOM to add the classic sound of a 2002 R32 to your 2030 e Golf GTI.

    I'm surprised that a German manufacture would even consider that. I lived in Germany for 5 years (and I'm married to one) Germans like things quiet. No mowing on Sundays for example, no commercial trucks are allowed to run on Sundays, and stock exhaust is a must. In fact the city of Karlsruhe will no longer allow any diesel automobiles in the city limits. Other cities will follow, but that's more for emissions. Anyway, great to learn something new. Thanks!

I'm stunned., You know its hard enough not to be paranoid on every squeak , rattle and groan that you THINK you hear on an older auto (B5.5 TDI manual trans conversion here) - now you have to worry about what is either being masked (on purpose?) or 'simulated' to really mess with your perception. When did style gain a lead over substance in VW?
