- IE Stage 1 turned my Golf R into a little DEMON! In this video we're going to get the R out on the road with a POV drive and I'm going to go over the first impressions I had of my Mk7.5 Golf R running Integrated Engineering's Stage 1 & DSG flash. Spoiler alert: its a blast. Literally.
If you're looking to unleash additional power in your Golf R or VAG vehicle, Integrated Engineering is one of many great routes to do so. IE advertises 359HP & 377lb-ft TQ on the 91 Octane Stage 1 flash I am currently running. I advise everyone to do their own research on which tune(s) may be right for you!

My go pro angle was kinda trash in this vid, I promise I'll fix it going forward lol
I think it looks not bad to be fair
@@TalariaDawg in my opinion it was too high up at some points, couldn’t see the gauge cluster or anything
Hello from Australia.
As a fellow 7.5 R owner, just keep an eye on the coolant temps as the water pump/thermostat is notorious for giving out if you didn't already know.
In the performance gauge screen I have Coolant temp, Oil temp and Kw. A good way to check if it starts to creep past 90c.
Currently I'm in warranty and will await that to run out before a tune but just something to keep an out on anyway.
BTW, since the water pump etc is a world known issue, you can as VW for a good will gesture if it needs replacing, if they won't honor that, they may cop some of the cost.
Started with a MK3 Golf went to a MK6 GTI then to an E90 335i fbo e30 stage 2 then went to a fbo 5.0 mustang 6 speed on e85 ported mani, then to a F150 ecoboost lifted and cosmetics. Just traded it in for a MK7 Golf R. VW is something special and after all these years I find myself back in a VW. LOL.
Nice, quite the list you’ve accumulated! I only had a mk5.5 Jetta TDI before I got the R. Loved that car but it became a rust bucket at its 200,000 mileage lol
I started with a brz, did full exhaust and tune and then sold it for an 86 and did the same thing, sold it for a 2019 2SS 1LE Camaro and sold that after a year and a half for my current 2020 S3 lol, imo the MQB platform are some of the best daily drivers out there for the money.
@@jayskates I love the MQB platform, if I were to get rid of my R I’d definitely go for an RS3
@@MkKevin that'd be my choice as well haha i'm in Canada and since we can't get them new here anymore due to emissions with the 5 cyl engine, they're way too expensive second hand.
@@jayskates yeah I’m also in Canada and there have been rumours the 2024 RS3 will be coming back to Canada. But I’m sure it’s going to cost $100,000CAD new. Hopefully if they announce the 2024 here the price of 2018-2020 used RS3s will drop
it sounds so good! I have the same car all stock and absolutely love it. Can't wait to start doing modifications.
It just gets better and better, it’s an awesome car!!
I'm in the UK in a stock 2017 Mk7R - and I'm going Stage 1 very soon, super excited
Nice man. I'm running IE stage 2 Flex fuel tune on my Mk7 GTI and it's fun!
Sweet ride my dude!
If this is a little demon then I must drive a monster.
Mk8 GTI stage 2 uniflex tune.
Intercooler, clutch, downpipe, coils, plugs, and intake. A few more mods but not listing because I'm lazy.
Same car and same tunes. So fun and worth every penny for the IE ecu and dsg tunes!
Absolutely! Best part is that stage 2 software will only cost the difference between that & stage 1
Nice video, love the enthusiasm.
I have a Mk7 with an APR Stage 1 tune and a K&N panel filter in the stock airbox and the Soundaktor turned off (I don't need my VW to sound like a Subaru).
Stage 1 is plenty for me. What I really care about is handling, and that can actually be improved a lot on a MK7 R. Here's what I did to mine:
- Eibach Pro-Kit springs (they're a really good match with the DCC)
- H&R 25mm rear sway bar
- EMD adjustable rear sway bar end links
- Eurocode Tuning front strut brace and rear chassis brace
- Euro Sport Street Camber Kit
- OBDEleven coding:
- Set Haldex to "Traction"
- Set XDS to "Strong"
I cannot recommend these mods highly enough. My car is still ultimately limited by understeer, but now that limit can only be reached at racetrack speeds. I never feel understeer at all on the street anymore. Turn-in is instantaneous and the car just feels a lot more lively and adjustable overall. But it's still a comfortable cruiser and in no way tiring or hyperactive like my EVO was.
The perfect car!
Nice man... Thank you for the list, I was wondering about some on my R. :) I also made some changes via diagnostics and that was XDS set to off. It literally destroys the car brakes and the car feels unpredictable for me when is this system ON.The electronics of the XDS+ is behaving little bit differently on each situation and I fould that unacceptable.
@@Jarod-cw1wx YW. Interesting, I've never felt that unpredictability at all. And I figure having to replace pads and rotors more often is worth it for better handling. Especially because brakes are so easy to work on.
Fellow Ontarian, had a stage 2 s3 but recently upgrade to an Rs3.. no regrets. I do miss the red rocket 🚀
I 've been happy with my stage 1 Unitronic for 3 years . While under warranty I ran a JB4. Gave great power /torque but not smooth with the DSG.
With the flash on both, night and day compared to stock and the JB4😄
12.5 in the 1/4 mile at the drags
I just bought a 2019 Golf R this weekend. Car is stock besides some Neuspeed Wheels and Lowering Springs (Which I am not quite a fan of) - Stock form car is pretty quick. Will be getting Tune soon.
People say a lot the Golf R should have come Stage 1 from the factory. Well, let me introduce you to the Golf R360S. The "S" does not stand for Sport or anything. It stands for Swizerland. Yes, VW actually made a limited run of 360hp Golf R to be sold in Swizerland exclusively. As far as i know its mechanically the same as the regular Golf R. The difference is software alone. They actually had plans for a limited run of Golf R400 aswell but it was stomped when the diesel fraud became public.
I've got a mk7 gti with only an intake, stage 1 93 eqt tune and tvs dsg tune. Dyno'd at 295hp and 368lb at the wheels.
Right on! That’s big power from a stage 1 flash. I would love to dyno my R at some point
And that’s a GTI stage 1
What type of dunk was it?
@@thealiendfs Dynapack wheel hub dyno, stock GTI made 222hp and 278lb at the wheels.
How’s the reliability been?
@@GTI228 Done 10k miles tuned and never had any issues, its as reliable as it was on stock power. Only changed the plugs to ngk ruthenium's, properly gapped to .024 as per tuners recommendation. Keep up with the regular maintenance intervals and you wont have issues.
Happy for you, great looking car. I have a MK 7.5 R my self. Maybe you already know of it, but if you dont, keep an eye on the axial play of the turbo, known failure. Just a friendly tip.
Thanks for the tip, will do! I’m not too harsh on the car & still have less than 27,000km (16,000miles) so fingers crossed I don’t run into any issues any time soon
Question - what is the “axial play” of the turbo?
@@jstoli996c4s If you put your fingers on the nut for the compressor wheel and move it sideways, thats axial play and what the thrust bearing manage (wich is known for failure) and if you move it up and down, thats radial play.
Nice video... I've recently had my 7.5 R ECU and TCU remapped stage 1. Only other modifications are a Pipercross panel air filter and a Tyson Performance inlet pipe and turbo elbow and it made 372.8bhp on the dyno... It has livened the car up nicely and it feels a lot more responsive. The oil temperature is running slightly cooler as well. Gone from 100/105 degrees to 93/96 degrees. I'm in the UK and the weather is cold at the moment, so will likely rise once the weather gets warmer. I've subscribed to your channel and am looking forward to looking through your other videos. Greetings from the UK 🙂
How did you get a bhp readout on a dyno?
@@jacks_Dc5 The tuner who did the work gave me a printout with the bhp and torque readings, before and after the tune 🙂
@@richardboswell5992 interesting, was it a roller dyno? I wonder if he calculated the reduction from wheel to crank
@@jacks_Dc5 Yes a dyno or rolling road. According to VW specs my car is 306bhp standard. The dyno printout came out at 304.4bhp. After the tune 372.8bhp... I assume the power ratings are flywheel bhp and not at the wheels 🙂
I have a MK 7.5 Golf R as well and have managed to resist the urge to tune it since I purchased it new in 2019. Like you, I am concerned about the warranty and to be honest the car already has plenty of power for my daily commute. I had a APR Stage 2 tuned 2012 VW GLI that was a beast, but I always felt like I had to hold it back when driving in traffic. I can only imagine the R with a stage 1 tune will also frustrate me in that same manner. (even more than it already does stock). I guess we will see once I have the car paid off and it it out of warranty where my head is at. If I do decide to pull the trigger it will probably be either Unitronic or IE. I have the DSG transmission as well, so that will definitely need to be part of the upgrade.
Take you're time if you're still uneasy with losing your warranty, everyone has a different situation so dont get FOMO! I work from home so I don't commute anymore, if I was having to drive hundreds of miles a day, I probably would not have tuned my R while I still had 10 months of warranty left. It sure is a lot of fun when you pop it into race mode, but honestly highway cruising in comfort mode feels no different than how stock did, other than having different shift points
I have the Unitronic Stage 1+ ECU & TCU on my Mk7.5R DSG… it totally wakes up the car! 🚀 Mine’s still under warranty but I don’t care, I don’t abuse my car. Just do it, you definitely won’t regret it ✌️
FYI you are hearing turbo compressor surge. It is bad for the compressor wheel. Very high stress. Hard on engine too, ECU does not like trying to fuel over pressure pulsations.
How can this be prevented? Larger pipes in/out?
My vw cc I did oil cooler change most of the other maintenance timing chain water pump transmission changed etc and it’s running great @152k miles @200k engine will be rebuilt
I have a 2018 Golf GTD in black and a VW transporter T5 TDI in the same grey as your Golf R. The car looks great I bet you’re having loads of fun with it.
Good stuff, I love indium grey! Thank you, so far it’s been a blast, literally!
I had a normal Golf MK6 and MK7.5 . Now I got no car. Considering the MK8.5 GTI when it is released here.
Man it sounds wicked! I just got a Manual 2019 R yesterday and can’t wait to do some mods. Still under warranty for the next 3 years so.. Subbed!
Appreciate it! Enjoy the new ride and warranty while you can, never know what quirky things can happen!
I got a manual 2019 Golf R too. Bought it 3 months ago... Still under warranty for the next 2 years... Can't wait to go stage 1 or 2, but still gonna wait the end of the warranty before
@@jeremybriand5196 Enjoy it! You’ll be able to fall in love with the car even more in a couple years once you tune it
@@jeremybriand5196 most of the time the dealership won’t care if you are tuned and will still do warranty work. I brought my gti in stage 2 fbo 🐱less and they replaced a leaking valve cover gasket for free
@@GOODSATIVA I think they will do warranty work on the vehicule if they don't have to plug in the scanner. If they do plug the scanner, Volkswagen will know the car has been tuned, so in that case, they might not want to pay the dealer, so the dealer will not do warranty work (that's what I think)
Nice looking Golf R! I drive an ‘09 GTI (DSG), K04 CTS Turbo etc. In retrospect I should have just bought the R; too much wheel spin with front wheel drive…
Appreciate it! Back before I purchased the R I was debating between that and a GTI. Obviously the GTI would have left me with more cash in my pocket but I have no regrets going for the AWD, especially since I live in snowy Canada

That’s awesome, I hope to be cruising around at that age too someday. Thanks for watching!
Enjoy, I have a Mk7 Gti stage 3 running a Garrett GT2260s car is a monster! The R is even nastier once Fbo and bigger turbo. My buddy is running 10.3 in his.
Had Mk7 gti stage 2 Revo , awesome car , switched to Audi S4 B9 , but sold it to save for the 8V RS 3 . Changed my mind and getting the 8Y S3 . Safe to say Audi VW are the best tuner cars OEM plus 💨
Great picks! The 8Y S3 is a very sharp looking ride. I was actually considering getting a 8V RS3 a couple months back, but ultimately couldn’t let go of my R.. Enjoy my friend!
@@MkKevin yeah man RS3 is nice but every time I looked at one , people just either dogged them , tuned them or super over priced being a older car ( 2018 Daza) . The S3 and Golf R are the sweet spots; saving money with performance . But thanks man ! Keep up the clean content 🔥🔥
@@Bran_robbie Exactly. The 2018 RS3 I was looking at in my price range had near quadruple the mileage of my R and multiple owners. Didn’t feel like it was going to last very long before discovering a problem. Thanks for watching!

have a golf r my self aswell and cant wait to tune it soon as well just waiting for warranty to be done
Yup take your time my friend. I traded up my warranty a little early for it because I was getting impatient lol
I drove my GTI for 5,000 miles like I stole it. When nothing happened to the car I immediately went stage 1 50,000 miles later and the car is fine I'm a DSG mind you so no issues with this stock clutch like the manuals would have.
From what I’ve read online and heard.. people who run into issues with tunes, a lot of the time have to do with underlying issues the car may have had running stock. Overall decently rare to have catastrophic problems
Collecting mine tomorrow I can’t wait
maaaan the Mk7.5 is my dream car and with this type of vids i remember why, that exhaust sound, how it pulls, god damn. I'm looking forward to get one when i'm older because right now i'm 16 so it's kinda hard yk. But when i get one i wanna tune it like yours, i would like to know how you got that flutter because it sounds more than amazing. No idea why there is people that tend to hate on them.
You’ve got plenty of time to get your hands on a MK7.5, maybe in a few years the prices will come down on used ones and you’ll be able to get a deal! That fluttering noise I think is programmed into the stage 1 tune when you also have the IE intake and turbo inlet. When I was only running the IE intake and turbo inlet with no tune, it didn’t make that noise. Then when I tuned it, that’s when the wicked fluttering noise kicked in!
Im waiting on mountune smart flash for my gti clubsport !
Supposed to de 360hp and 500nm !
Not sure what to expect but excited for sure :)
Proud owner of a Tornado Red Mk7 R. Full stage 2 APR , with AWE exhaust. :P
I'm driving a 2016 pfl Seat Cupra 290 with DSG in stock form. Great car as these all come standard with DCC and the e-diff using fwd only, mines is the CJXH engine.

I also got lower oil temps when I did stage 1 on mine. On a hot day really pushing it now maybe I hit about 105 c. But mostly under 100.
You car sounds way better than mine, I kinda want an open air filter too but the guy who tuned my car said I would lose some effect, not sure how much. I have a K&N air filter on it. I also did a dsg software upgrade while I had it in for a tune. You car is looking really nice btw! Earned a sub
Appreciate it, thanks for the sub! Good to know I’m not seeing things. The highest I’ve seen my oil on stock was 108-109C. The most I’ve seen it since the tune is maybe 104-105C. If I’m cruising in comfort I never see it past 100C now! I love my intake sound currently, it’s worth any potential air intake loss if any haha
@@MkKevin I don't think I ever in my 2+ years owning my mk7 ever drove it in anything other than race lol. I definitely need to fix my air intake, I love that sound you have. I'm willing to sacrifice some power!

Nice, enjoy! The dog bone mount helps a ton on GTIs & an upgraded clutch is crucial. You’ll be putting down crazy power with all those mods, best of luck!
2017 Golf R with the APR Stage 1 tune. Your car sounds good. Looking to do a Cobb Redline Carbon intake soon.
Appreciate it! You'll love the new intake and all the sounds it'll make lol
Nice video, the lower Oíl temp is something that can be adjusted by the tuner EQT did that a few years ago, there was explanation on how and why but I didn’t pay attention, they also did it for coolant temp as well, overall stage 1 is very good for this cars, I would go intercooler before a downpipe and stage 2 unless you can do E which is depending on availability, I will be waiting for some 0-60s they might not be as good on that DA, probably on a cool evening when temperatures are close to 60s will be the best. 👍🏻

These engines don't have a BOV or diverter valve. The flutter that you're hearing is air that's forced back up through the charge pipes and out past the turbine when the throttle plate is closed. I noticed the same awesome sound after I installed a CAI on my Mk7 Jetta.

Yeah it holds the RPM super low now in comfort & shifts more seamlessly. It's really like a mix between comfort and eco because if you floor it in comfort it wont bog down as much as eco does. It's a pretty comfortable little car on long drives, no complaints from me!

Just bought a stock 2016 mk7 gti se. I was looking to install an intake and inlet pipe first. Do you recommend any other mods like a downpipe before going stage 1?
Stage one dont need anything besides intake/cat back if want
Stage 2+ tcu tune
Dp, intercooler, oil catch can dsg solid mount/dogbone mount
Rear sway extremely recommended along with a hybrid pan/pan cover as our composite pans break/leak easy
How do you find the dsg tune when downshifting in manual mode. Is it quicker to engage than stock? I find the delay is a bit much on my 7.5 R stock.

I’m curious if you have any supporting mods for the Stage 1?
I’m also from the UK and currently drive a GTI Clubsport
Yes I have the highly recommended IE open air intake and turbo inlet elbow to support the tune. They increase airflow by a ton and allow the tune to run better I believe. Not to mention they add a slight increase in hp
have you considered getting the united motor sports haldex tune?
No I havnt, that’s the tune that basically sends more power to the rear when needed right?
@@MkKevin yea, it allows more than 50% of TQ to be sent to the rear wheels. Should theoretically help with the understeer characteristics. Ive only come across one youtube video of someone who has it but he seemed to like it.
@@saphiretamer seems like it could put a lot of wear and tear on the haldex system, I’d have to do more research before doing that. I also don’t track the car so I rarely ever deal with bad understeer!
4.99, but… you got 4.11 (albeit with launch control) on your stock ECU, so it’s actually NOT faster with the tune? Guess we’ll have to wait until you do a launch control tuned.
Launches make a big difference! Havnt been able to get a great launch done recently due to wildfire smoke where I’m from so I havnt been able to make a video doing launch tests yet.. however I assure you I’ve done high 3 second launches off camera on stage 1!
What does the pull physically feel like
It kinda feels like someone is pushing you back into your seat, even more so than stock did
I only did my ecu ie tune . Should I go with the dsg tune as well?
I’d recommend it, of course do your own research too! Shifts are way nicer overall & it feels almost like a different car in race mode the way it shifts. Not to mention I believe it increases power a fair bit
@@MkKevin also should I go with ngk racing spark plugs or just keep it oem until I go to stage 2 . My oem plugs just got replace a couple months ago so I probably should be safe
You’re probably fine right now if you’re not running into any issues. I likely won’t touch mine until stage 2, if at all
A DSG tune makes a huge difference. Definitely recommend
What exhaust do you have?
I've got a remus catback, non-resonated! I have some other videos with better sound clips you can check out
Audi S3 (2015) Stage2 with meth With TCU Tuning .(Revo Tune) Full Revo stage 2 package
Dyno'd at 435.3 bhp at the wheels on a very conservative dyno... Bought as is Not built .
Sounds like it’s a lot of fun! Do you plan on doing any more performance mods? I’m sure how it is now checks all the boxes
The meth must be doing quite a bit of a difference then. They're advertising 400 crank at stage 2. I have a 2020 Leon Cupra 4drive going Revo stage 2 as well. But regardless, this platform is a beast, i love the Cupra, great car....
@@MkKevin no it's safe built as is ... if i decide to go any further ... will have to have forged internals , turbo's etc ...
I enjoy the car mostly on weekends and as i'm in MAURITIUS Island ... i enjoy the winding scenic roads ... my daily driver is a slighty moded Chevy Spark LS :)
@@vinckokeccee1352 i'm also supporting mods as a miltek Full cat back exhaust and Revo Front mount intecooler, induction kit with and apr sport cat ...
@@shrutykant it’s probably wise to keep it as is before everything starts potentially turning into issues and costing lots of money haha. Sounds like a beautiful place to enjoy some winding roads, enjoy!!
Pretty slow 0-60 lol, you sure it’s tuned with stage 1? Average 0-60 in a stock r 7.5 is 4.4 sec 0-60…
Not quite an RS3

I have one, it’s the most boring way of hitting 100kmh in 4 secs.
The engine is bland and soulless, just a flat noise, no powerband, the steering is the worse I’ve ever experienced, no feel at all.
When I bought it I was so concentrated that I could get it tuned up and match most cars on the road, I ignored the fact that the dynamics of the car are just soo boring. Biggest mistake I ever made buying a Golf 7 R. Looking for a 987 Cayman or Caterham next.
I tuned it my self too, was cool. But when i went to a real tuner that did finetuning on Dyno i was shocked how much the car changed... its still stage 1 but i had over 15hp more..
Most "tuning" companys who dont work with a dyno buys their tuning maps from ebay etc.. Some are good, some suck. Did you dynod your car yet? I would love to see the powerband
No I havnt hit any dyno with the tune, but the butt-dyno definitely feels like I have significantly more power! Especially at higher speed pulls. A custom tune would really help dial in the power numbers but I love being able to switch the mapping myself at any point
@@MkKevinps://ruclips.net/video/Z70FlWpthTc/видео.html
This might be interesting to watch, the powerband etc.
I dont want to sound like a pro guy, but a big advice that i would love to give you. Take it to the tuner and let them view it, if you run it too rich or what ever you can get problems. My friends gti engine blocked cuz of a self chiptuning. He drove about 4 months with it and did threw away the engine, the tuning company jdengineer did warn him already. But he only went there for a dyno pull 😬
Idk where you bought or got the stage 1 tool, but please do your research. Some are really crap.
I give you this advice out of love, so dont take it as hate. Example compare your 5:26 peaks and length to other stage 1 golfs (google pics) there you ser a big difference
1 more tip, get a swaybar. Look this:

@@bravosava Appreciate all the info! I'm very confident the tune I have it well built, I even ran logs and sent them to the tuning company and they have said the car is running perfectly healthy so far. Thanks again for your tips!
Why not do a launch? If it was a manual I’d understand
What mods u got other than the ecu and dsg tune and the intake?
