Even more ingenious is the way he shaped the damaged area to the patch and not the other way around. This greatly lowers the effort to get a perfect fit.
1000% I appreciate the warmer wood tones. I have a hard time picturing the washed/grayed/driftwood/beachy looking finish on these midcentury pieces. As someone else mentioned, your technique for transfering the shape needed for a veneer patch is a great tip!
Indeed. The warmer the better, if you ask me. The whole 'light and friendly' aesthetic with bleached or rustic looking wood tones is a product of contemporary Scandinavian design. One can understand the move towards light-reflecting rather than light-absorbing materials in northern latitudes where sunlight is at a premium for 6 months of the year, but it does get a bit boring.
ORANGE-WOOD MCM LOVERS UNITE!! *I* am here for it!! Once you've lived thru 5 decades of furniture trends, you get to pick your faves, and I'm all in on this exact sort of piece, have collected a house full of same ilk of Mid century pieces. Really appreciate you making content for the NON-boho-chic painted furniture tribe! 😊
After watching many furniture refinishing channels (great ones I might add) I’ve come to the conclusion that you are the most pleasing channel to watch!
I *think* about refinishing something and then I watch you patch veneer and I *think* I don't have anything that needs to be done that badly...lol. Beautiful work as always. You're a patient man to get all that veneer patched, replaced, and matched
It looks so much better now. I'm not sure why you're so concerned about the people who don't like that colour. Yes, others are entitled to their opinions but that shouldn't dictate what colour you use. You do you, as the saying goes. I don't actually like that colour either but I think it suits the mid century style of furniture better.
I totally agree but, as I mentioned, that brownie/orange tends to suit those mid century style pieces more than the modern trendy stain colours, especially when they're being restored as apposed to a modern painted finish like most furniture flippers would do. Plus, I think people wanting mid century style furniture would probably want the more traditional colours. Sorry for the long rant.
My house has hardwood floors with a “gunstock” finish. The warm color is comforting, sort of like pumpkin spice in the fall. I like the birds singing in the background. That’s the fun about working on furniture projects in the garage!
The 'orangey' finish looks great, especially after the clear coat. The nightstand looks 100 percent nicer. Great project. [the open section of the nightstand would be perfect for holding books]
This is a plan for the future for me. Buy a house with a view onto a lake or a forest where it’s nice and quiet, and to sit outside and restore unloved furniture. Not rushing, just enjoying the process. There’s something about working with wood and all the sounds of sanding and hand tools that are just so appealing and relaxing.
I like the redder, orangy colors also. What was once sometimes referred to as "gunstock" was my favorite. The stained and shellacked brown/orange of 95% of 1950s knotty pine and later red oak is unappealing. Great job as always.
No matter what colour it is I wouldn’t worry too much about it and what others say. The value of your videos are your attention to detail and your methods of repairing the various furniture pieces. Your methods of repair and teaching are truly invaluable. I learn so much from watching your videos. Please keep up the great work!
Love the rich color on the nightstand. I like the drift wood look as well. For me it really depends on the piece. I greatly appreciate your video. I recently found a mid-century modern cedar chest and 3 chair while on a curbside hunt with a friend. I'll be putting what I've learn from your channel to good use.
Definitely not too orange!! I love warm wood tones, especially on midcentury pieces. Living in a home with washed out furniture sounds like a nightmare to me haha.
It looks amazing! In fact, this is the exact color of my grandparents' dining room furniture that they purchased in 1961 for my parents wedding - as the wedding was at their home and they wanted it to look nice 🙂 So, extremely authentic and beautiful!
I just listened to (most of) the podcast. It’s fun watching this video knowing more about your RUclips channel history. Congrats for turning this channel into a full time gig.
This looks wonderful! The color is appropriate to the period. I’m always impressed with the care you take with the furniture you restore. I also appreciate that you explain what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. You’ve saved another one from the landfill.🌸
I took a sip of my “evening” wine every time you said orange now I must go to bed, thank you. The piece looks great! I may dream about fire hydrants……..
I love warmer coloured wood...but then I'm not that person who has to follow every silly trend. I like what I like. Period. Sometimes it changes but not according to trends. If something new comes along and I like it, that's how it goes!
It turned out beautifully as always! You shouldn’t try to please all the people all the time, you never can anyway. And you shouldn’t worry so much about it either. Just keep doing you. It’s worked so far!
Looks fantastic! I love the color. Most of my wood furniture pieces are MCM. They have a nice golden mahogany stain which leans more toward orange/amber.
another beautiful restoration! I have a mid-century Lane end table that has a laminate top that I do not like...after watching this, I'm going to pick up some walnut veneer and adhere it right over the laminate...Thank you for your tips!
I like it. I often like the slightly paler tones, and that certainly seems to be popular at the moment - really, I suppose what I like best is the natural colour of the wood. But some pieces of furniture look just as good or better in the warmer coloured wood, and anyway, you were the one doing the work and looking at the piece, so it was your choice as to what you did. As always, I appreciate the way you make your videos. They're well-filmed and narrated, as well as being informative (and, of course, calming!). And I appreciate how you explain what you're doing and why you' chose to do it that way rather than another way (I presume to pre-empt anybody saying you should have done it another way!). I always hit "like" before I even start watching your videos, because I know I'll enjoy them.
You’re not wrong, it is indeed very orange. Would look amazing with olive green shag carpeting & a brown, yellow & orange quilted bedspread & a macrame wall hanging. 😜😘
I love that orange-brown color. Reminds me of pumpkin pine, where the uv light changes the color from a white brownish color to a orange color. Love your work.
Looks beautiful, once again. Thank you for making these videos. I've learned so much from them. Sometimes I don't get why you put so much effort in certain parts, but apparently that's the difference in perfectionism :)
I Completely on your side with the warmer colors! In Scandinavia it’s the warm teak furniture that’s back in style, and I love when you go that route! Fantastic video and fantastic piece! Bravo!
Great upload. I have the matching Stanley sideboard with the laminate top. I searched RUclips for a video on how to apply a 3M walnut veneer and to my surprise, your video was the first one I clicked on. I was all prepared to use a heat gun to remove the laminate, but not anymore. Your video probably saved me from ruining a $1,500 MCM sideboard.
Not too orange at all! I’ve for years loved acorn/caramel finish, which is lighter than this but very similar in tone. I do know a lot of people don’t like it but I don’t get it lol. Looks waaaay better to me than washed out, gray, or overly cool finishes.
The emphasis on orange cracked me up. The only way to make it better would have been to use pocket holes on an epoxy resin river table. You videos are the best and your sense of humor is great. Can't wait to see more.
love the look. the washed out look is a fad. like open concept houses from 2010's or the oak look from the 80's. the trimming and blending skills are outstanding. thanks. I use the techniques for restoring vintage speaker cabinets. that would be a cool project for your to do to mix it up. lots of cool speakers from the 60 solid cabinets.
Sounds like you need more color blind viewers to watch like me. For me the grain of the wood is everything. If color is an issue, my wife makes the call. I love the grain of the new veneer on the top. Another great video!
I've been watching your work for a while now, but haven't ever left a comment until now because your comments about coloring made me think ok, people may not like the orange'y color and that's fine; then they can not buy deep-colored wood. My taste tends toward the timeless, traditional style and in the years I've been renovating my house in that vein I've come across oh so many trends. You mentioned the washed-out, driftwood look so many people like. Yeah, that goes with the farmhouse style that's been trendy over the last few years that makes people dry brush chalk paint on everything before slapping "eat pray love" on it in a mix of block lettering an that silly, overly flowy script that's almost impossible to read. But here's the thing (in my mind): they're trends. Just like tile countertops, shag carpet, or resin river tables, the farmhouse style will pass. And when it does they'll be spending serious money redecorating and redesigning because some pretentious 20-something on social media decided the new MUST-DO thing is to plaster moss all over your walls and paint it pink. But when you see a piece of furniture that transcends trends and looks amazing on display for decades, it's almost always finished in these rich, deep wood colors you show here. So if people don't like the color? Fine, don't buy it then; it's not for you. But you shouldn't ever feel like apologizing because others feel the need to remark whenever a creator posts content that doesn't revolve around their tastes.
That is beautiful. I agree about the 80’s orange wood. I really dislike that color. Unfortunately all the woodwork in my house is that color. But this is different. It’s rich and warm. Kind of reddish side of orange. Really compliments the wood nicely. Wonderful.
I don't mind this color, it looks "right" some how. But I liked the brown maple color too. I guess it just depends on the piece of furniture. Nice job! 💜
Rubbing a pencil on paper over the chipped veneer to get the right size patch is so simple yet so genius!
@@minoan438 That brown you don't like can actually look good with the proper conditioner, dyes and the perfect complimentary decor.
Agreed! 👍

YES! I hit "like"before I even begin viewing. You NEVER disappoint.
Thank You!
Me too!

Funny I am Boho eclectic but love traditional MCM furniture.

I assume it reduces chance of resale he couldn't possibly keep all the stuff he refinishes and repairs.

That color sells if only slower.
My house has hardwood floors with a “gunstock” finish. The warm color is comforting, sort of like pumpkin spice in the fall. I like the birds singing in the background. That’s the fun about working on furniture projects in the garage!
The kids, the kids!… they ruined my beautiful antique vanity. I almost cry. I can’t wait to try some of your methods.
I love the washed out look, yet with MCM, I do love this orange look. Beautiful piece!
The 'orangey' finish looks great, especially after the clear coat. The nightstand looks 100 percent nicer. Great project. [the open section of the nightstand would be perfect for holding books]

Your an artist! I love watching your videos. The nightstand looks beautiful. Thank you for sharing your talents and woodworking skills with us.
Thanks for watching.

Love the warmer wood tones, and it looks great on this piece! Looking forward to the next project 👍
I agree with you that warm wood tones are more beautiful with the exception of the 1980s red oak look. You did a great job on this cabinet!
Definitely not too orange!! I love warm wood tones, especially on midcentury pieces. Living in a home with washed out furniture sounds like a nightmare to me haha.
Great skill but what makes your videos outstanding is the narration.
I find it so calming.
I find it very useful.
It looks amazing! In fact, this is the exact color of my grandparents' dining room furniture that they purchased in 1961 for my parents wedding - as the wedding was at their home and they wanted it to look nice 🙂 So, extremely authentic and beautiful!
Love the look of it. Gives out very cozy and warm feeling. I can imagine setting up some classic record player right on top.
I *LOVE* how warm it is! Makes it feel cozy and inviting. Not so much into the cooler “modern” aesthetic as I find it bit austere.
I just listened to (most of) the podcast. It’s fun watching this video knowing more about your RUclips channel history. Congrats for turning this channel into a full time gig.

The orange tint looks great. Impressive work!
I love that color. It’s so warm and cozy.
I love warmer coloured wood...but then I'm not that person who has to follow every silly trend. I like what I like. Period. Sometimes it changes but not according to trends. If something new comes along and I like it, that's how it goes!
Me too. I like what I like be trendy or not, not big on following trends myself.
Beautiful job! The birds add much serinity to your videos. So relaxing......
I’m with you on the color I kinda like that, it’s appealing to me for some reason. Looks beautiful.Be well my friend
If somebody don't like it don't buy it. The colour perfectly suit the style. Thank you for restoring. 🤩
Love the orange veneers, they are so warm and inviting in the home. Excellent job, as usual!
I love this warm coppery orange color from this sort of wood! Nice job as always!
I think it looks great! And using the gelstain on the fiberboard back was a very clever way to make it match while still re-using it.
Wow this is just lovely. I like the warm tones!
It looks beautiful. I love the color and, as usual, your careful restoration of the dents and dings.
It turned out beautifully as always! You shouldn’t try to please all the people all the time, you never can anyway. And you shouldn’t worry so much about it either. Just keep doing you. It’s worked so far!

this orange look. In eastern Tennessee we always say about the Volunteer teams :Go BIG ORANGE!!" it looks great!! Beautiful piece!
I love the orange tone, all shades of orangey wood. The final piece looks great.
I like the orange tones, but then again I’m a big teak fan. Amber tones are so warm and inviting!!
I like it. I often like the slightly paler tones, and that certainly seems to be popular at the moment - really, I suppose what I like best is the natural colour of the wood. Furniture with this orange finish looks stunningly beautiful against a green background. Lovely restoration sir!😁👍🇳🇱
You’re not wrong, it is indeed very orange. Would look amazing with olive green shag carpeting & a brown, yellow & orange quilted bedspread & a macrame wall hanging. 😜😘
It looks great.
I like the orange! So happy to see one of your videos this evening!
I love orange/red wood color anything that resembles MCM furniture... Always loved the warm tones😰👍👍👍
I like the warmer wood tones too! Looks great! God bless!
I like orange. I think it adds a lil jazz to the piece.. 😃👍
I love that orange-brown color. Reminds me of pumpkin pine, where the uv light changes the color from a white brownish color to a orange color. Love your work.
😂😂 when he puts the scraper in and it looks like one of those bad infomercial 😂😂
Love the work and color
It looks stunning! I love the color, especially because so many refinishers use brown stain for everything now. 😉
I love this little piece of furniture - and I like the colour!
I personally have enjoyed how you work with color on your pieces. Don’t worry about us viewers, you’ve got color locked down!
Looks beautiful, once again. Thank you for making these videos. I've learned so much from them. Sometimes I don't get why you put so much effort in certain parts, but apparently that's the difference in perfectionism :)

I LOVE warm woods. They’re not “in style”? Good! That means more for me and the thrift stores! 😁
This is beauuuuuuutiful!! I LOVE the orangeness of this 😍 🥰❤
Beautiful colour! Warm wood tones work for me as well!
Not too orange at all! I’ve for years loved acorn/caramel finish, which is lighter than this but very similar in tone. I do know a lot of people don’t like it but I don’t get it lol.
Looks waaaay better to me than washed out, gray, or overly cool finishes.
Brown with an orange under tone is what I expect in MCM pieces like this. It's beautiful.
Well I for one love red tones. That’s my dinner room and living room tables and chairs. Beautiful
I enjoy your work transforming mid century back into usable pieces instead of being sent to landfills
Thank you.
Beautiful color, beautiful work, beautiful piece.
I love it in all its orangey splendor. You saved it yay. I enjoy your videos so much. Thanks 😊
Birdsong again. Lovely accompaniment to nice careful work.
I love the orangie look on mid century 😍 thanks for your vlogs. So calming and interesting 😌
Another example of craftsmanship. Thanks.
That color looks great, perfect for the piece.
I’ll always lean towards character over mass appeal! Great work as usual! 🙏🏼
Loving the nice warm finish to this cute little night stand. Thanks.
I bet its better looking now than when it was new, Dashner.
I like the rich-looking color in this one!
Wow! Fantastic. I always pick up valuable tips from ur vids. Thanks for posting. 👍

Nice little nightstand. Looks nice. 👍🏻
The pencil trick on the laminate repair blew my mind!
Sounds like you need more color blind viewers to watch like me. For me the grain of the wood is everything. If color is an issue, my wife makes the call. I love the grain of the new veneer on the top. Another great video!
I bet that looks ten times better in real life, fantastic job, as always.
Love watching your artistry!
Red/orange is the best color for wood, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!
Great job again Dashner, have a nice day !!! .
Thank you for these videos! Appreciate the straight forward instruction and great camera work. Gave me the confidence to try something new.

Exactly. Well said.
I personally like that color and I don’t care what other people like. It’s not dark and boring or flat and uninteresting. 👍
I like the warm hues too
Thanks!
Excellent! Lots of techniques learnt watching this, thank you.
It's a beautiful piece. I love the color.
Thank you for your restorations
Thanks for watching.
very teakish looking sides. came out very nice
That is beautiful. I agree about the 80’s orange wood. I really dislike that color. Unfortunately all the woodwork in my house is that color. But this is different. It’s rich and warm. Kind of reddish side of orange. Really compliments the wood nicely. Wonderful.

I like warm wood, too. It is lovely!
Lovely job once again. Thanks for sharing
It looks good. Way better than it originally looked. 😊
