The timing of this video is impeccable. Just yesterday my little sister, aged 10, asked me if her calves were “too fat”. I live in a different country and I’m just currently visiting, so I was simply stunned by the question. I lied down and talked with her more and she told me all about how “everyone’s skin is so perfect and white” and hers is “pimpled and tanned”. She’s your average child; loves playing roblox, drawing and watching cartoons, yet just less than a year of having a phone made her think like that. It’s all just the Internet and capitalism profiting off young, impressionable minds, trying to push their products onto them. It’s depressing, really.

@@kyojuroswife4112 unfortunately, this is what the current environment dictates. I was still in hs around 5 years ago and did not have any social media (already hated it at that point). All school assignments were shared on there, I was laughed at and had to go through trouble every day just to get the necessary information (despite the fact there was a dedicated school system for this...). Surviving without a phone in a digital world is hard. Even then, this is just a matter of time. She would get a phone at some point with all the same systems in place (addictive notifications, social media etc), and it would be so overwhelming to her unexposed mind that she would immediately get addicted. The only thing that can help atp is going against the government/corporations & trying to parent and school to educate the young about the dangers of it all. Still, as much as we want to blame individual parents, it's still company giants and such at the core of it.

As a teen who is kind of on the tail-end of Gen Z, I wanted to give my two cents on this: I think Gen Alpha kids have these interests because there's nothing else left. As a tween I was really confused about what things I was 'meant' to enjoy, it seemed like I wasn't allowed to be a kid anymore because every kid thing I did was 'cringy' and lame and not adult enough. I think maybe by becoming a clone of the 'confident, girl-boss influencer', Gen Alpha (girls specifically) are just trying to blend in and avoid criticism, especially they're constantly labelled as illiterate and 'bad kids', it must be really hard especially on the internet

COMPLETELY agreed. I couldn't have said it better seriously. It all boils down to internet harrassment making everyone think they are cringey and that being cringey is this terrible thing. The thing is, in trying to be badass like everyone else, these kids are also applying the pressure to not be cringey and whatnot on their peers. I cannot count the amount of times I've been called a yapper or some other similar thing for just writing two thought out sentences in a comment section. Tiktok glamorizes anti-intellectualism and bullying. You literally cannot be on tiktok without either joining them or being miserable.

This whole skin care thing is feeding on vanity and fitting in. In my generation it was fashion magazines and models on television. Wanting this perfect image. Eventhough is was a fantasy. But there is no physical perfection. It doesn't exsist. Learning to be happy with yourself is sometimes a life time process.

My best friend's daughter is almost twelve, and she's obsessed with skincare. Her mum was telling me that it's a huge trend amongst girls her age to use fancy serums and moisturisers. I don't use TikTok, but I've been noticing this worrying trend more and more on RUclips. What really alarmed me is that the other day I typed "glow up tips" into the RUclips search bar (because I've been feeling a bit frumpy lately and looking for style inspiration), and one of the first results that came up was "glow up tips for 10 year olds" (and no, I didn't click on it). Why are 10 year olds concerned about "glowing up"? Their glow-up will come soon! It's called puberty!
It honestly makes me really sad how image obsessed and insecure social media is making kids. I'm 40, so I grew up with the heroin chic trend, and magazines aimed at 12 year olds promoting diet tips etc, and it feels like these unhealthy body standards are being pushed again, but it's so much worse because we didn't have social media back then.

A friend's daughter who's on the younger spectrum of gen z/early gen alpha (kinda confused abt when one ends and the other begins??) nearly developed an ED because of all this nonsense a few years ago. Just now she's stopped obsessing so much. Mind you, she's super skinny and lean because of genetics and dancing and hits her growth spurts like nobody's business so she looks extra thin but she's at a good weight for her overall size etc. She thought (not as much anymore after much effort from her mom and me and other friends) that she was morbidly obese. Now she's able to appreciate how her body is developing through dancing but that energy has shifted to her skin. She hates how it's not super duper pale and how it's "full of acne and oily" (it's really not) and somehow this has been harder to combat. The logical, medical explanation of why her skin is changing does not seem to be enough anymore and she's a very smart and rational kid so it hurts to see her mental health taking hit after hit for no good reason other than capitalism and unrealistic beauty standards and expectations.
I asked her a few months ago what her favourite shows were and she didn't have anything age appropriate to tell me. In her words "it's either all for babies or adults with nothing in-between" so she watches whatever her mom deems decent enough together with her and they discuss them. This world just isn't suitable for kids anymore, especially tweens and young teenagers.

I think the fact that generally only the wealthiest millenials can afford to have kids, so (on average) more Gen Alpha kids are born into richer households in the US and UK, it would explain how they have the money for all this overconsumption prompted by their favourite influencers.
Some trends are more accessible than others of course, but 100 item hauls? My mum would properly sit me down, sell off most of the clothes and talk about how it isn't good to buy that much stuff (she likes keeping the house tidy and hoarding would get in the way of that).

My mom is back in school to become a nurse practitioner, and the other day she was talking to me about a course she took about skincare. Using skincare that you don’t need can wreck your skin! If a ten year old wants to use skincare, they should only be using a GENTLE cleanser and a good moisturizer, they do not need an eye cream, a chemical exfoliant, or vitamin C serum. It can cause more harm than good. Kid’s skin is not as tough as adults, they are a lot more likely to have a reaction to a product. PLEASE be careful and watch your kids in the mall, they shouldn’t be left alone in a Sephora. In Costco you aren’t aloud to take a sample without an adult until you are thirteen because you might not know if you are allergic to the food. There are a lot of things that your skin can react to in skincare, and young kids (and some adults) don’t know to do a test swatch to see if they have a reaction.

hmm, so true. consumption of certain brands by a bunch of kids because it’s gone viral has been around since shopping existed. however, I suppose the strongest point here is that a shirt from Abercrombie won’t leave a ten year old with chemical burns the way a full face of Glow Recipe, The Ordinary and Drunk Elephant products can, along with how many of these skin products are said to be “necessary” by every 20 year old influencer on tiktok. the Stanley cups are silly but not bad. Makeup and skincare used incorrectly is. And I don’t think the poster is necessarily bashing kids, but more so the influencers and the social media that kids are now being exposed to by their parents and their peers. I recall watching a lot of Alisha Marie, Seven Super Girls, Wengie and Rclbeauty101 when I was younger. Nobody has since filled that gap. TRUE! from mid elementary school to middle school my main interests included slime, frappuccinos, watercolor, sketching, reading, writing fanfiction (not R rated lol), roblox, minecraft, youtube, cooking, making layer cakes of different flavors, and making cupcakes. i also liked using sponge rollers to curl my hair and dying my hair, but that was mostly the extent of it. the first skincare i ever got was 3 products, all from trader joe’s, when i was 13. i used these until high school and started to get acne. i started wearing makeup at 14, but i didn’t wear it every day, and it was only mascara. when i was 15 i started wearing other things too but it’s never been every day for me since i have depression, insomnia, and ADHD- getting ready at 6:30 while exhausted every morning for school was a nightmare by itself. i used to do my makeup in the car but now that i drive myself, i’ve mostly stopped wearing it, which i also know will isolate me socially and then i won’t get as distracted and i will focus on school. i was a tween not too long ago, and even then, it may not have been drunk elephant and stanley cups, but it was full faces of makeup still, hydro flasks, and bath and body works. my interests weren’t “cool” then, and i hid them from everyone at school. if i had been raised by parents that reinforced society’s messaging towards young girls, i may have ended up like everyone else. ofc im just like everyone else now (but broke version).

Where are the silly clothes that your mom would make you wear? Every kid at some point will feel the need to fit in but this need is being pushed on kids at younger and younger ages. Young and dumb has never been so accurate till now. They have no idea what they’re getting into in, nor does their parents. With the amount of Internet access they have, thus will lead to, or has already led to it. Their brains have become desensitized to it. And the only way to satisfy their reward system (related to dopamine) is to go onto the Internet and to watch content. Kids are like sponges they will absorb anything they see. Especially in middle/middle-upper class areas, everyone shows off their wealth through $200 shoes and $400 necklaces without a thought. Those left try and try and try to catch up to the trend. Money is not valued, rather treated as a given and spent at every whim. These kids (me included) are pushed and pushed to buy and buy more without thinking. I am upon the youngest of Generation Z. Due to this I’ve been raised along side older Gen Z and the oldest members of Gen Alpha. As someone who is seeing these changes in tweens/teens everyday here’s what I’ve noticed; when I was a little younger all anyone was interested in was toys, art, and outdoor activities.
Although many members of Gen Alpha still take on those interests something is clearly different. Each year we get new 6th graders and each year all I see is more girls dressing up to the latest fashion trends, making TikToks in the halls, chatting about the latest skincare trends, and using an overload of makeup.
To say the least, I do have wonderful loving parents, but they were often busy, so throughout my childhood I have been raised by the internet. Of course I still experienced the pleasure of riding a bike around the neighborhood, going to a park, making mud pies, and letting my imagination flourish. But to keep me occupied my parents didn’t mind how much I used my devices. In my case I was lucky enough to stay on the relatively, normal, and good side of the internet, especially before the pandemic. But it seems many other kids my age experienced something different.
As time goes on it only seems to get worse and worse, my eight year old cousin has been so influenced by the media that she never wants to stop wearing lip-stick, and blush. Now all the cute, silly, kind of cringy, outfits she liked to wear are horrible because they aren’t with the newest trends. Recently my cousin was scrolling through INSTAGRAM, instagram of all PLACES. Models kept appearing in her feed and right after she saw those models she tried to tighten her clothing so she could look more “feminine” and “sexy”. It breaks my heart.
It really says a lot about our society considering, I’m barely any older than some of these Gen Alpha kids but EVEN I can tell that it’s bad. If any parents are reading this, PLEASE, step up and help your child. When I was little I could never dream of restricting my kids of anything, but that’s because I never realized it could get this bad. Now that nobody is restricting these kids, and setting boundaries, they are bound to find any KIND of media that can and will affect them for the worst.

I'm a babysitter, and have done so for several years now. One of the things I noticed with millenial parents is that they seemed to be completely unaware of what their kids consumed online, and now it's catching up to them. They would hand their kids tablets and put no parental controls, just put youtube and the kids would find all sorts of age-innapropriate stuff. In some instances, I would inform the parents and they would change to using RUclips Kids. The kids would absolutely lose it when this happened because they couldn't watch inappropriate things on the tablet, only age appropriate content. So I imagine with these young girls, they probably started watching beauty and lifestyle channels that were not age appropriate and began to mirror the behavior of them, becoming obsessed with looks and skincare. Not to mention that as these kids get older their parents continue to NOT monitor their devices leading them to more and more exposure to things that are not good for developing minds. The fact that there are kids under 13 in the comments section of this video proves my point. Their parents aren't watching them.

Speaking as a Gen Alpha ( im 13) I hate that we have to have this stereotype representing us. Children have always wanted everything. When the catalogs came out with the newest toys or the newest TV show came out and now that's the big thing. Parents are the ones who have to exercise control and decide what their child should or shouldn't have. Putting that level of responsibility on the child isn't fair. 20 year old Gen Z and totally agree with all of this. I didn't even have a skincare routine until I was 18. I think Gen Alpha is mirroring our generation somewhat? They see influencers around my age as role models like you mentioned. Skincare wasn't a big thing a few years back. Our generation started to emphasise the importance of looking after your skin and now young kids believe that they need to follow along too. I don't see a problem with kids wanting Stanley cups or things considered 'trendy' because I remember doing the same at that age. Of course we had toys and more stimulating Christmas presents, but I think wanting to fit in with everyone else by buying what is considered popular is very normal at that age.
I think we should encourage kids to be kids (I was watching another video about kids under 18 dressing like celebrities in their 20s), but we need to be careful not to nit-pick at them too much because it's exactly what Millennials did to us. Sure, you can be concerned, but I think we do have to take a step back and observe. Don't forget the oldest kids in Gen Alpha are barely teenagers at the moment. And if anyone in Gen Alpha is reading this, you're beautiful as you are. You don't need to worry about your skin or obsess over fitting in with everyone else. Explore what you enjoy, but don't wait for permission to be you. Just don't forget to enjoy your childhood while it lasts

@@myandrew1659there is a reason I promise! Makeup is not all that great for your skin when worn frequently and with large amounts. Additionally while makeup can enhance your facial features, sometimes it can hide/change them. There’s times when I finish my makeup and I have to take some off because I don’t look like myself in the mirror. Believe me, I used to get into my mother’s makeup all the time as a kid, but I was mortified when other people thought I had black eyes when it really just was my (bad) makeup! I understand the struggle of not being happy with what you see in the mirror and wanting to change it and make yourself look “better” with makeup, but you’re still really young and you’re still growing into your face. If you feel like you must wear makeup I’d recommend something like lip gloss that’ll add a pop of color to your face without doing too much damage to your skin! I’d also recommend getting a spooly and brush/shape your eyebrows without filling them in. You’d be surprised at what a difference shaped eyebrows can make! I know it’s tough growing up this day and age and you might disagree with most of what I said, but just know most of the people in the comments as well as the video creator care a lot more about your generation and the impact of all this way more than the influencers or RUclipsrs that are telling you that you need skincare and makeup. Those people get paid to sell those products while the commenters here do not get paid. I barely wear makeup and I’m in college, so not all “grownups” wear makeup or do skincare routines. Inner beauty and being kind to others is way prettier in my and many of my friend’s opinion! Focus on eating nutritional food as well as spending time outdoors, and be kind to others! If you take care of yourself and others your body will reflect it! Good luck with I’m guessing second grade!

One thing I see a lot with friends and acquaintances with Gen alpha kids is that some, not all, parents are trying to heal their inner child through their child. They get them anything they ask for because they were denied access to their interests growing up for whatever reason. They don’t force homework, studying, or reading because of the pressures they felt during school. And so on. While I understand that, I think it’s also not beneficial for the child. Therapy should be the place adults work to heal their inner child, although I acknowledge that’s not a possibility for a lot of people. There can, however, be a balance between supporting or indulging your child’s interests and teaching them to value what they have. Social pressure plays a huge role as well, and I’m not discounting that, but I feel like there must be a better way to handle that than just buying the latest thing that’s trending just because other kids at school have it even if they already have one of that thing or it’s out of the budget.

Yep and yep and yep and yep. I’m a middle school teacher and the attitude of most parents towards their child is like that of a friend or treating their child like a little doll. Denying their child anything is taboo among many parents these days.
Parents have the overwhelming fear and guilt of being “too overbearing” or “too strict”. It’s crazy. The stories I could tell of encounters I’ve had just this year alone…
You nailed it though. There’s a lot of parents projecting onto their child or of parents trying to parent their way into healing themselves.

@@McGheeBentle it definitely feels like “living vicariously through your child” doesn’t mean the same as it used to. Instead of talking about sports, we’re talking about projecting their trauma. It’s like society shifted from one extreme to another and it’s entirely unhelpful and unproductive all around. While I totally get wanting to break cycles of authoritarian parenting, being extremely permissive as a parent isn’t the answer. I think a lot of people are misunderstanding that age appropriate expectations and healthy boundaries aren’t the same thing as being “too strict.” How can anyone expect a human who’s learning to become a person day by day to be capable of understanding the world once they’re grown with no real guidance from the moment they could string a sentence together?

The social media weren't as harsh in putting up an unrealistic beauty standard as they are now, but trust me, they didn't have to be. Kids are often insecure, and most insecure people get mean just to hide it. I am an adult now, and I even spoke to some of my past bullies to see where life took them. Some of them honestly apologized (not that I was looking for an apology), saying exactly what I just said: “I was insecure about myself, and it was easier and less scary to punch someone else down than to face my own insecurities.” You will be ok, trust me. As someone who truly believed no one could love me because of my looks, I can promise you that you will find amazing people who will love you for YOU, so you don't have to focus on the beauty thing too much. I’m at the beginning of gen Alpha (12). I’m not American (i’m a filipino living in australia), and it’s not as bad here - I mean, the obsession is definitely here, but not as insane, and the younger kids definitely can still read and stuff (many not well but at least they can), but I know people, a year or two younger than me, who will do anything for drunk elephant skincare and/or a Stanley cup. I’m not obsessed with skincare; I only need enough to keep my skin healthy. As for water bottles, all I need is a metal/insulating one.
I understand that things are ‘trending’, but the things people will do to get them is crazy. Sometimes, the people buying these items don’t even need them - 9 y/o preppies *don’t need* hyaluronic acid serum or glow recipe toner. It’s barely even age-appropriate for them.
It’s also the fact that they are being spoiled up to the point in which they can’t even understand the word ‘no’. They are most likely getting the money from their parents, so it’s also their own poor financial decision to spend hundreds of dollars on unnecessary shit for their daughters.
I have millennial parents but I am being raised and taught with boundaries. They are not strict, but know that there are many situations where ‘no’ is an answer.
The internet, social media, and child influencers have definitely influenced the people their age, but now they’ve been taking it too far. The ‘iPad kids’ have been on their iPads for too long.
Edit: Even though in the video, gen Alpha was defined as 2010-2024, I still sometimes say that it is 2013-2025 (and that gen Z is 1997-2012) *because* I hate being associated with this stereotype, and looking through the comments, I have seen others think the same.

I grew up really poor in greece so the behaviour of younger kids is so surprising because of how ungrateful they are and how fast theyre "growing up". I am in somewhat disagreement with "teens" being the problem in this scenario, I think the age group we are having a problem with is age 7 through age 13. I completely agree with you and your video. These kids have gone wild, I would give anything to go back to childhood and have the imagination I once had. I am 17 now and am facing a come to reality with getting older and I hate to see these kiddos rushing to grow up. At ten I was still shopping at Justice and Claires not Lululemon and Sephora. I didn't even pick any makeup up until I was 14 and if I did it was for an imaginary tea party. I think I got my first thing from Lululemon when I was 13 but that was mostly before it became a popular brand among younger people. I didn't even know about "trends". Life was simple, I was just a kid. Now all these kids are not living in the world we all used to. These kids are excited about Stanleys, I was all excited about getting American girl dolls such as Grace or Isabelle. Skincare? No, my "skincare" was getting the Christmas pack of the sprite and coke shaped lip balms or the fun little lip smackers in the fun flavors. That word didn't even find its way into my vocabulary when I was 10. It is honestly just sad. I didn't even know what Sephora was until I was 14. My point being made, if any kiddo is reading this just, please enjoy your childhood because you will soon find yourself sitting in front of your toys that you no longer have space for, bawling your eyes out wishing you could go back. It is a hard thing to realize and all you will want to do is whip out your old toys and give them one last spin in your imagination. You will get to thinking about how you might eventually have kids and hoping and praying that the time will go by slow so you can live your childhood again through them.

As a person who is on the tail end of gen z and still considered a teenager, it is really interesting to have such a perspective. I grew up far more on the internet than many others in my generation but it was still the early years of platforms like RUclips and I myself was not allowed on social medias. I feel like it’s a fault of our current society that girls are socialized to grow up so fast and as a transgender man who still cannot come out to my parents due to a safety issue I still see the effect of being told to grow up faster despite not wanting it as many people from my assumed demographic would want. It’s a factor of our current socialization and peer pressure as well as gallons of other social issues that seem to be in this cesspool of a world.

I think something important to keep in mind also is every generation did this. I mean my generation looked up to millennials and as we grew we did our makeup and dressed like them because we wanted to feel grown up. Then as Gen z got older we shifted and became that for Gen Alpha. They see things popular for our age group and mirror it because they want to feel grown. Our generation really push the clean girl look and skincare so kind started mirroring. Then businesses saw this marketing gold mine. They saw these kids wanted skincare so they targeted this age group and used fun colors making it seem cool and young. The businesses basically served this generation their first trend that basically belonged to them.

I'm not sure if the stuff you mentioned in the having hope for the generation are necessarily true based on the other stuff in the video as well as their age. They cannot be the most interested in activism or diversity, or the most eco friendly while also overconsuming and following microtrends, while also being born 2010-2024, making them maximum 14. I don't say this to be mean, I'm a millennial and we were the punching bag for years. I only say this because there's a lot of room for growth in a generation so young and it discounts a lot of other experiences while putting a lot on very young people to make it sound as if they are the hope for the future. We should sort out the reading and basic attention issues before making it sound as if the next generation are ready to take on the task of bringing hope and optimism to the world.
Not sure if I quite got that right, but hopefully that makes sense.

As a millennial, I feel bad for Gen Alpha. They really don't know a world without intense internet influence. They want to fit in like all the previous generations and don't understand that wanting to act grown at such young ages will cause regret when they are adults. I look back at my 13-year-old self emulating the adults of that time (early 2000s) and I regret not letting myself be a child for just a little longer. It's even worse now, though. I see girls who haven't even reached puberty feeling pressured to conform to adult ideals- it must be a lot to handle when peer pressure is a tap away. They also had to deal with a pandemic that led to social isolation, and I am sure that did not help their development. My advice to Gen Alpha is this: embrace your childhood, and discover what you like to do outside of the internet so that you have balance.

The only reason i personally (as a millennial) got a pair of lulus is because im a small person, i work out regularly, i like skin tight over baggy, and the draw with Lulus despite the price is that if something happens you can get them fixed or replaced. I definitely dont see the logic in having 10 pairs, though.

My friend was saying that she still had faith in gen alpha- we walked into the Sephora right after and there were a group (of maybe ten) tween girls all blocking the drunk elephant

I’m apart of the 2010 Gen Alpha’s and yes we do have a problem. Literally just went to Sephora today to get my Toner (I have had incredibly dry skin and I’ve had a daily routine since I was around 8, and yes, the toner is the Glow Recipe toner 😭) I was just looking and the Glow Recipe and Drunk Elephant sections were right next to each other and this tiny girl maybe around 7-9 years old came running past me to grab the Goldie Drops or whatever its called and maybe about 7 other girls screamed at each other trying to decide who gets the last one, and yes, they were all decked out in LuluLemon and had those pink Valentines day stanleys.

Girl the glow recipe toner is so bad for skin it’s like straight up perfume on your skin

if you are 12-13 and have dry skin you DO NOT NEED TONER!!! you need to book an appointment with a DERMATOLOGIST before you do this sort of stuff to your skin!!

As a teen coming from the end of Gen Z, I think a large factor is the parents. I think my parents, my mom specifically, have really kept me from growing up too fast. But it also isn't her just telling me no; it's her asking me why I "need" something, and that makes me think through my decisions. I also think that depending on how old people were when COVID hit plays a huge factor as it impacts where their development was set back.

I never got the hype over Stanley cups, regardless of the consumer's age.
They are super heavy! Unless you go camping regularly, they would not be practical at all.

hi! I’m a gen alpha/ young gen z as well, and personally, I have horrible acne. I won’t use drunk elephant, retinol, or anything that isn’t suitable for my skin. i just use what works. even though we’re still kids, some of us are starting to enter the awkward phase of our life when we follow trends and start to get influenced by what other people say. so therefore, kids our age start to get into things like makeup, skincare, stanley cups (which are something that I will never get the hype for), etc. i’m mad at the kids who destroy their skin along with their own self esteem, be rude to the employees at Sephora, or are spoiled rotten. but it’s still not a good thing to do to bully them for just doing what they see is popular, taking care of their skin, or just enjoying doing makeup. they’re kids. they’ll see drunk elephant and go “ooh, cute packaging!” and the next thing you know, they’re begging their parents for a retinol serum. and don’t get me wrong, I love reading, video games, and going outside, which is the same for other kids my age. but still, getting mad at a child for being influenced easily is kinda twisted, right? well, I hope you can take this into consideration and I hope you have a great day!

As a gen alpha kid I’ve been kind of using the stuff in these trends, but I agree like I’ve seen it all on like Instagram and TikTok and all that stuff that’s how I kind of got into it so I agree this is kind of the stem for everything.
