My dad had what was said to be the largest photographic collection (cameras, film, antiques, ephemera, etc.) of any private collector when he passed years ago. I was left to deal with it all and I knew Nothing about any of it. He was the 1st person to ever write a publication for camera collectors in the 60's. I learned enough in dealing with his massive collection that I now buy and sell cameras on ebay and etsy as a hobby...but never got to share the hobby with him. His name was Eaton Lothrop and he was super cool. He would have loved watching videos like this!

Fantastic tips Nick this video is awesome. I inherited a Mamiya Rb67 Pro with a few lenses, 2 Pentax ILX cameras with a a few lenses, a few Nikon bodies including an underwater Nikon, camera bags, filters and other accessories from a friend of a friend which belonged to their father. Apparently his wife couldn’t stand seeing them taking up space and they thought they were not worth anything. They heard I was interested in film photography so offered to give them to me. Apparently there was a Hassleblad in the mix but one of the children snapped it up lol. Not long after receiving them owner passed away, I found his old engraved Swiss Army knife hidden in one of the bags so I offered to send it back to the daughter as I knew it had sentimental value. She was very grateful for it. It turns out he was a landscape photographer from up north in Australia and had a few books printed with his work. Sorry for long winded story but I thought it was worth sharing. Keep up the great content.

    • @NickExposed

Wow! What an incredible story! Definitely worth sharing. I think one of the greatest things about acquiring gear, is getting to hear the stories behind the shooters that owned them previously! So cool you were able to return the swiss army knife. I have a knife from my Grandfather in my camera repair toolbox that means the world to me. He would use it for fixing little doo dads and knick knacks, and now I use it to repair my gear. I can definitely understand the sentimental value of such things. Anyways, thanks again for sharing the story! I was so glad to have read through it.

Don't neglect looking in things that you don't think a camera might be in. I bought a Leica IIIf with 50mm Summicron for $29 at a charity shop. It was actually in an old binoculars case. It was behind the counter and I almost didn't bother.

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  7 лет назад +4

Oh wow! What a find! Thats a seriously great tip that I didn't even consider mentioning. I seen an old Graflex 2x3 and a quarter in a old sew machine casing at a antique store about a year ago. Im not sure if someone hid it in there because they wanted to come back for it, or if the seller thought it went with the casing, but there it was hidden away. They still had it marked higher than what I wanted to pay for it so I passed it up. But still its a great point youve brought up! Thank you so much for your addition!

Went and raided (i was given permission to take whatever by the university as it was all unwanted) a university biology labs old film camera storage and picked myself up an olympus om4 and om4ti with the 50mm 3.5 macro lens. Paid $0, bit of a steal in my opinion haha

One of my favorite pastimes is to get on my motorcycle and tour the county thrift shops. My best score was a NIKON S with a NIKKOR f4 2.5 cm lens for 15 bucks. It had a price sticker of $60 on it, but when I told the sales person that the camera didn't work she said how about $15 then. I didn't know what I had until I got home and did a little research and found that the lens is extremely rare, ebay sellers listed a few for between $1500 and $4000. I have since repaired the NIKON S and also bought a nice NIKON SP, for a very good price, on ebay using your secret ebay hunting technique (not so secret anymore thanks to you). Great video. Keep up the good work.

Hey Al! What an amazing thrifting score! Nikon S's are rare to come by as is, but with the 25/4.. That thing must be a beauty!
And dont worry, people forget about the secret ebay hunting tip more often than not. So I think there are still plenty of deals to scoop up. I just got a Leica 35mm summicron for cheap recently using the tip 😉
Thanks for the comment! Congrats on the beautiful Nikon S and SP setups!

Ive been shooting my dad's old Pentax K1000. It was our family photo camera and was collecting dust for years, until I decided to shoot with it. Came with a 35mm lens a 50mm, and a 135mm lens (my favourite!). After shooting with it a while I realized that I didn't have a backup in case it broke, or spare parts to fix it. I found another K1000 on the facebook buy and sell for $40 canadian, which I'm happy with. Seems to work fine, cosmetic bump on the top. I lent it out to a friend to shoot with for the summer and ill ask for it back in case mine breaks.

Such a classic camera. They are really a great workhorse camera. I honestly haven’t heard of many of them breaking down. Pentax truly did a remarkable job with the build and construction. What a cool story to yours as well. I wish I had a camera from my family. We only ever really had point and shoots over the years. None of which were anything remarkable. Thanks for sharing

Late to the party but my mom's friend bought me, for $2, at a yard sale: perfect condition Nikon FG, E series 50mm 1.8, quantaray 70-210, 2x teleconverter, Nikon flash, 4 rolls of Kodak 400, and a leather case for all of it. great video. two tips i will add (as a very experienced camera hunter/reseller): be EXTREMELY CAREFUL with battery doors on older point and shoot cameras. that and keep a spreadsheet. the spreadsheet changed my life; not only in and out, also track inventory based on recently sold value on ebay...
best deal so far: pentax super-a "european camera of the year edition" with unused original strap, gold stamped pentax-a 50mm f1.4, pentax-m 135mm f3.5... all for only $20!?! naturally i will never sell it, it is only summer driven and still in mint condition.

Great video Nick, I really enjoyed it ... I not long ago picked up a Praktica MTL5 for $20 (australian) The lady wanted $100 with 3 lenses, one of them was the Pentacon 50mm 1.8 in perfect condition. When I inspected it there was no resistance on the film winder and the mirror was stuck up. Long story short, I passed it up but then she asked if I would give her $20 for the lenses so I took the lot home. All that was wrong was the film rewind release button was stuck in, freed that up and everything else started to work perfectly. I just ran a roll of film through it and no light leaks and even the meter seems spot on. I guess you can be lucky sometimes...

My first SLR was a Canon A-1. I was helping a family friend clean out his garage and he was giving me some outdated computer parts (my obsession at the time) and he said, "you want a camera?". I adored that camera and shot many rolls before I got rid of it. After I sold it, I almost immediately wished I had kept it. Fast forward to today... I saw a Minolta X-700 kit with four lenses and several other goodies on marketplace for a song. It was labeled: "Film camera package" Now I finally have a 35mm SLR again.

I’ve recently gotten into 35mm for about a year now. My first camera was an Olympus OM-4 which took me some time to figure out but as soon as I started understanding how to use it to its full potential the winder got stuck. It’s just sitting on top of my shelf for deco now.
Fast forward to about 2 months ago, I found a Minolta X700 at my local thrift store for $15 with a 58/1.4 Rokkor lens. Works perfectly. It’s become my go to workhorse. I heavily rely on the light meter and this light meter is brilliant. Tho I still miss my OM4.
& touching on fav stores to acquire film cameras, my forever go to store is KEH. Gold standard for camera gear. I’ve been a frequent customer since finding out about them just 3 weeks ago. I’ve purchased an OM2S body and a couple Zuiko lenses from them at “bargain” condition. They were conservatively graded and I find myself itching to buy every “bargain” deals they have of cameras I’m looking to buy. I’m actually waiting on a Leica z2x (bargain) and a replacement for my broken OM4 body in “excellent” condition. I can’t wait until they arrive. But one sleeper online store is shopgoodwill.com. You can find some gems for dirt cheap. I just bought an as is Minolta XG1 only for the lenses it came with-a 50/1.2 Rokkor + 28/2.8 Rokkor lens for $30. Amazing.
I now have a small arsenal of 35mm cameras to play with and always looking to add more. But great video, subscribed (:

I am a bit of a hoarder but I do display my cameras. Recently took my Grandson who is 13 to Daytona Beach for a few days. I was using a Yashica Electro 35 and he was using a Canonet 1.7. I have been shopping ebay for a Nikon S2. Just purchased one that had had recent service. Using it now. It is a work of art and may take the place of my Nikon F2 as my favorite 35mm. I have a Mamiya C330 that has amazed me. Have only shot 1 roll of film as it is for special subjects. I do have a plan for its next use. Enjoyed your video.

I found a Konica FT-1 Motor. I opened it up and cleaned up the flex cable terminals and am in the process of replacing any deteriorating foam. It has a Hexanon AR 40mm f1.8 lens. The battery grip is in very good condition and ive bought two more nonfunctional FT-1's for about 20 dollars. Most issues come from the deteriorating foam that puts pressures on the flex cable terminals and the negative terminal on the battery grip side likes to break off. So if you cut out a small piece of aluminum can it can do the same job.

I agree about avoiding 620. Film availability is better with 120 film.
I generally avoid cameras with batteries. My best camera is a Zorki 4K with a f2 Jupiter 8. A Soviet gem.
My battery free meter is a Gossen Sixtomat colorfinder. German excellence from a thrift store.
Best 120 camera is a 1958 Rolleicord Va. Most expensive is a Pentax 67 with a 55mm f4 lens. Heavy, but going up in value all the time.

I inherited a large 2.8f kit shortly after that. This year, I found the legenday zeiss ultron with the concave front element for 20 at a thrift store attached to a broken Icarex body. I scored a Minolta Autocord TLR at an estate sale a few weeks back! I had been wanting to try my hand at medium format, specifically with a TLR, and found an estate sale website where they had lists and photos of the different things each sale had up for grabs. I found one 40 minutes from me that had this camera (I researched and decided this was a solid camera choice). I get there at 9:05 am; the sale had only been open for 5 minutes. And then I see the camera...in the hands of a lady (and her boyfriend) who was very obviously not a photographer, and just thought it looked cool. I was not a happy camper, but I found a Minolta SLR with a tripod and was content with that purchase. I kept passing this couple as I went through the house and kept eyeing the camera just to see how much they charged for the camera: $200. Fair price, but whatever. Anyway, I get in line to purchase the SLR, and out of nowhere to my right I hear "Alright, I saw you eyeing it...here you go" and the guy just GIVES ME THE TLR. I couldn't believe my luck! The camera was in great condition, the price was right (I've seen that same camera online go for $300-$900 in good condition), and the people who wanted the camera gave it to me instead of buying it. Crazy! They probably saw me carrying around another camera and thought "oh damn okay well she's probably gonna use it more than us". I dunno, but either way, I'm so stoked about this camera!!

And my main camera is Nikon F 3 models, one I converted to shoot Panoramic by masking the shutter plane with black paper tape, and one to shoot as the third one has the F36 drive. My models are 50 to 60 years, and still working, and Really enjoy the design, but the history from these models, not to mention the previous owners who had them, what stories they have. My best purchase to date was a Minolta X-700 with winder, a Minolta XE-5, Minolta XG-1 Olympus OM-1n, 4 camera bags, a Velbon tripod, multiple lenses, mostly Minolta, a couple of cable releases and some odds and ends all for $50.00. I wanted to buy a decent basic camera for my daughter to get into 35mm photography.
I learnt on an East German Praktica in the 80s so I decided to get her the same. I found a complete kit on FB marketplace with a selection of lenses shipped to us in Melbourne from Adelaide. For less than $100. (Australian, so about $65 US)
I knew that buying sight unseen was a risk but the photos looked good and the seller seemed reliable enough.
What turned up was better than I could have imagined. It came in a vintage solid meta camera case covered in a retro brown leatherette with some uber funky bright red velour liner. The camera is an LTL3 from the mid 70s and it was in mint condition. Now, I know these cameras are built like tanks and will survive the apocalypse but I reckon this had had hardly any use.
With it was a Carl Zeiss jena 50mm lens, a funky hanimex mirrored 500mm lens and pentacon 135mm. Oh and a 2xtele convertor.
Sadly the 50mm wasn't performing well and I stripped it down to investigate and I found loose pieces rattling around inside it.
I guess someone else had been inside it previously and had given up.
No problem I thought, I'll just go and pick up a cheap basic 50mm lens with an M42 mount.
I found a local guy selling a variety of "Various 35mm cameras and lenses" on FB marketplace.
I set off early one Saturday morning to see what he had.
The first two lenses currently attached to similar Praktica cameras were stiff to operate or full of fungus. At this point my daughter pointed to another lens sat on the table and asked if that one was OK.
At the first sight of it I had to fight back my immediate enthusiasm.
It was a Super Takumar f1.4 (the holy grail of camera lenses)
It wasn't one of the very early 8 element lenses nor was it one of the later ones branded up as, a "Multi Coated".
There was some yellowing from the thorium radiation but nothing a little bit of UV exposure won't cure. This thing operated so smoothly it was like it had just left the factory. Hard to believe it was 50 years old already.
I asked how much he wanted. "Make me an offer he said". He was already prepared to let the Pentacon ones go for $30, so I thought I'd chance my arm with an offer of $25. "Only if you have the right change" he says.
Now, I only had $20 bills in my wallet so I quickly picked up a Hanimex 80-200mm zoom and offered $80 for the pair. He accepted and I quickly handed the cash over.
As I shook hands and made to leave he commented that he had another 10 crates of camera stuff that he still has to sort through.
Apparently all this stuff belonged to his father in law that he is selling off to make space in his garage.
He obviously doesn't know what he has or what it's worth, so I'm watch his marketplace adverts closely.
I did see some pre war Voigtlander cameras in one box.
All I can suggest is you get your ass over here to pick up some bargains.

-I got my Olympus XA for $10 at a garage sale.
-A local camera store that is no longer in business sold me 5 Mamiya M645 bodies, 2 lenses, and 4 prisms for $200. I kept one of the lenses and one of the prisms to add to the Mamiya M645 body I bought from KEH for $100 a few months earlier to complete my setup. Then I sold the rest. In the end, I made a pretty profit.

I loved this video so much. I just got back into film photography and I have been slowly building a collection so so that I can use them in my blog. I stopped by a yard sale the other day and asked about cameras. I ended up with 14 completely different cameras. From slr's to point and shoots :) most working but minor things wrong with them. Now I am slowly trying to figure out how to repair and clean them all up :) Sonia you could do that video quickly I will be very happy :)

I've actually had good luck on Facebook. I simply put out a message that I wanted to try out shooting film vs digital and asked if anyone had an slr they wanted to get rid of. Ended up getting an argus which is missing a switch... a Nikon n70 canon ae-1 program with lenses and accessories for free which works perfectly has some seals left. Got a super nikon fg which is my fav so far with 2 lenses flash and filters for 10 bucks. Just need to put some new seals in it but it works.

Oh nice! Yea putting out a simple call like that to friends and family or even the film community can definitely bring a great return. Great video! I have about half a dozen cameras I've had or collected over the years and they have taken a beating in storage and moving around, I am rehabbing them. Most are heirlooms one way or another. About half use obsolete film which bothers me. I rekindled my old Super 8 habit via eBay where I got a fine working Sankyo with
the bells and whistles all working for 99 cents and another one like it for 11.00 (plus shipping of course). Then I found a fine Canon Rebel for 5 bucks that cleaned up like new, but it takes 20 bucks to battery that thing up. Not so bad cuz those new batteries do double duty on my old recommissioned Nikon N70 that I hate but needs to be brought up to speed. I see what you say about don't be a hoarder, its easy to go in and see cameras for cheap and want them. For me, it's ok if they're really cheap, but I want cameras I can and want to shoot with.

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  5 лет назад

Sounds like you have a nice collection there. Glad you are getting a few of them up and running. It is a bummer that a lot of the old film sizes are no longer being used. It would be nice to be able to shoot some of those old old heirlooms.

I picked up a Nikon L35Af2 point and shoot for $4 at a pawn shop. They had a couple of Rubbermaid crates full of point and shoots that he later would tell me were headed for the landfill. I could have probably picked it up for $2 being that I offered them that much for each subsequent camera and he accepted. Another good place to find cameras is the facebook phone app. There is a Pentax K1000 that I'm too lazy to drive out and pick up for $25. I picked up my Canon S110 in mint condition for $20. Edit . . . oh yeah, Mike Padua sent me here. I follow you on IG didn't realize you had a YT channel.

In reference to checking the Canon lenses, the old FD lenses (with the chrome ring that locks it in place), you can check the aperture blades easily with the lens off the camera. There is a little locking button that you can press with pen or your screwdriver, that will unlock the ring and you can then rotate it to the mounted position and run through the apertures.

Interesting video, thanks. How do these thrift stores work over there in the USA? Are they what we would call second hand shops in the UK, basically where the owner buys and sells items that are used and basically makes his living from this business, or are they some sort of charity shop? Where proceeds go to good causes rather than being run as a business? I understand that the Sally Army shops are charitable, but what about the rest of them?
    Cheers.

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  5 лет назад

Most of them are charity related over here. People come in and donate old/used goods to the store, and they in turn sell it to fund different efforts for the charity. There are some others around that are more of what you described as a second hand shop, where the owner purchases lots from estate sales and other sources to sell and make a living.

Hmmmm. Well I also have the tools to fix cameras and lenses, although, I'm no expert. I've picked up a Polaroid 600SE with a broken lens that I fixed for about $75. I got an Epson V750 Pro scanner from a dentist's office for $75. But my best find was a Mamiya C33 with 65mm f/3.5 lens + accessories, which the guy thought was broken, and it was, and it was also horribly dirty. But I picked that up for $10 and cleaned 'er up. Trying to sell her now. Looks brand new.
I've also found a Olympus MJU (with gold accents) and Olympus XA with flash for $5 each. Although I need a Pakon because using the Epson is not worth it for 35mm.
My main camera is the Pentax 6x7 with the 105mm f/2.8. I develop color and B&W at home.
      I'm actually a painter though. lol. (www.patrickstromme.com)

      @NickExposed  7 лет назад +1

Patrick Stromme hey thanks Patrick! I appreciate the kind words. Those are some sweet deals you've picked up. I fix up cameras and lenses as well (also no expert). It's a great way to score amazing deals. Once I picked up a Nikon fm2n for 5 bucks from a guy on Craigslist. Somehow they had unscrewed the film rewind knob and the shaft had fallen into the camera back so they weren't able to open the back up. I brought it home, took a paper clip and unlocked the back. Retrieved the shaft and put a spare knob on. Haha. Shot it for a couple weeks and then sold it for a really nice price to help pay for a portion of our trip to upstate New York. Learning to fix cameras really pays off.
And I'm with ya on the Pentax 67 combo. I have a MLU with the 105 as well as my main portrait camera. It's fantastic!!

You may try a google search for film developing in your city, or you could ship your film out to one of these labs...

      Hopefully that helps :)

Love the video, but IMO a Holga at any price (free) failed to meet the minimum standards here.

You never know what you might find. In the UK there is a television show called Antiques Road Trip. They give two antique dealers £300 ($400) each and lend them a classic car and they set off to buy and sell antiques as they go on a journey through the countryside. All profits go to charity.
In one episode they bought a curious old brass camera in a wooden box for £60 ($80) and sold it a couple of days later at auction for . . . . £20,000 ($26,000)!
    See their reactions at ruclips.net/video/eL4faSQ10rc/видео.html
Remember, ALL the profit went to charity.

Be ruthless. Don’t feel bad about getting a really good deal. Never mind that the seller is nice and friendly. Mostly that’s a spiel to get you to pay more.
All of this used camera business is really speculation and demand and supply. All of it is hot air, expectations and psychology.
Almost non of it about the real worth of the product.
All of these cameras have been amortized decades ago so the seller has no *right* to *demand* any price above a symbolic one, even if he has a Rolleiflex or Hasselblad.
He can get lucky however, just like you.
Be snobbish, be picky. Don’t pick up something unless you really want it and can see a use for it.
If there is a ding in it, chuck it, or use it for spare parts if it’s really cheap or free.
Don’t pay a lot for something you know will be an eyesore or an irritation.
There is plenty of fish in the sea. All you need is time.
Don’t buy to sell. Buy if you like the camera and can see a future for it and you. Selling should not be to make money because:
If you are not enthusiastic about what you are selling, it will rub off on the camera, in what camera you choose and what you do to it to get it sellable.
And then right on to the seller, souring people on the hobby in general.
Semipro sellers will try to push speculation and hype of certain models spoiling the market for everyone else.
This should be an enjoyable hobby or vocation, and we should put our money in the film manufacturing industry where it is most needed to keep film viable.
When someone eventually manufactures a new camera that is worth its salt, give your money to *them*.
    Not to scalpers.
