Matt, I could not agree with you more about flying in the UK. I’m a recently retired 777 captain. I flew that thing to Australia, Asia, South America, and Europe. London Control was the biggest pain a__ I ever dealt with.
People give these kids a break, they are doing way more interesting things than most of us have done in our intire life. You are always going to be new at something!!
Personally, I really enjoy Matt’s sense of humour. Like the ongoing Bonanza vs Cessna jabs. It's a shtick, and it’s great. Just like the whole UK ATC thing. Matt and JP would look at each other and smile each time Matt would launch into it, because they knew it would evoke reaction. And that it did. Sure enough, reaction poured in from the grumpy old pilot peanut gallery - as it always does. I sure hope when I’m a grumpy old pilot I will find enjoyment in videos like these - instead of hurtling criticism and insults at them.
These guys have more aviation knowledge under their belts than I have at twice their age. I struggle to understand even American ATC at times, much less with accents and unfamiliar phraseology inherent with other ATC systems. Crossing the pond in a single engine piston is not something I would ever consider, either. After building an airplane and pulling engines apart and knowing how just one small part can crater an engine...well..such a trip is just beyond my comfort level. These videos are so well done, I get the thrill without the risk.
@@briand4000 Engine failures are pretty rare. I have flown single-engine airplanes for more than 2,000 hours without a single engine failure. Driving to the airport is usually more dangerous than flying halfway across the US is a single engine 206 Cessna. Once you get up to altitude in a single engine airplane, about the only thing or person that you have to worry about is yourself. Do everything right and the trip will always turn out OK.
Matt, I'm not sure if anyone has ever told you but you have a very calming effect about you. Normally I would feel very anxious and on the edge of panic in that small Cessna over the ocean but I think you would make it bearable. Great content!
Great vlog guys, brings back memories of my flying around...Its all good fun..privileged as well...Keep filming Matt and get back to your Bonanza asap.
Karlrsruhe; I love that city: I spent three years in high school there between 1962-1965! I suppose it has changed a lot since then, but it's still a great city!
When we travelled around the USA in the early 70's we met a lovely retired couple in the Smokey Mountains , who noticing our Canadian number plates commented that it was a shame we didn't have mountains in Canada !! And that was nearly 50 years ago .
Not sure about that , this was the early 70's ,Americans did not get dry humour and this couple was in their eighties I would guess and had retired from running an antique business . I just think they had never travelled north of their border and had no reason to be interested in anything out of the USA and in some way I can understand that as they grew up in a nation that had everything , no need to know .
What makes you think I live in Canada , never lived in Ontario although been there . Lovely country though, as is the USA . Shame about the politicians though .
Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Airpark EDSB - the airport ist right in my neighborhood. I am based at Speyer EDRY, a couple of miles further north of EDSB. Glad to see you stopped by! :) Love your videos!
i realize I am a little late to the show but cant stop watching! As an aspiring pilot I find this absolutely incredible. Very impressed and entertained to say the least....
What's funny about it? Are you implying an insult to everyone whose name happens to be Richard - often shortened to Dick, as in Dick van Dyke, Dick Strawbridge, Dick Emery and others? Seriously, it means nothing in Europe, and not even schoolchildren think that it's funny. You'll be saying that the Irish politician, Willy Stroker, has a funny name next, or that the late Korean statesman, Lee Bum Sook should have changed his name! ;-)
@@RWBHere It seems like some people, even if they can call themselves mature by age and actually fly planes spiritually do not manage to evolve beyond Beavis and Butthead mentality. Sadly enough, this actually can also be diagnosed with certain corporate leaders and politicians these days.
You lucky guys not crashed.....I was shocked and surprise that you don’t checked the icing conditions specially when you’re flying over Europe before your flight plan has been submitted.?? Please consider this as it serious lessons for your future and for all other pilots how watching your channel !! I always wish for you saves flight .... this is captain Raf from Jordan .
They decided to sink a bit, end of story. That's flying here at this time of the year. With no mountains below them, not a real concern in that aircraft.
The plane has de-icing boots on the wings and tailfeathers, so I think they were not too worried about minor icing. Not sure about the prop, but usually they have heat strips on it if the rest of the plane has de-icing or TKS.
Scary these youngsters are. What would they do if the us government shut off the satellites the control gps and phone communications. They'd be SOL, and probably not alive.
Although the Bonanza probably is better at most things, the 210 is better at: 1. Loading/unloading - 2 doors vs 1 door. Pilot and passengers step up into cabin (in the 210) vs down into cabin through wing walk (in the Bonanza). Much easier for loading and unloading. 2. Visibility - High wing vs low wing, although this is personal preference. High wing is much better for sight seeing. 3. Airplane camping. You can set up your tent under the wing, if you're into that sort of thing.
I think Matt is really young. I would have been 100% more harsh at that age. Do we really want people to censor their comments to the extent that they don't say anything? He doesn't like the Europe setup. Why is that crushing to so many? I like that this actually touches on some of the technical aspects of this trip. I watch Louis and I have no idea what is going on other than he is excited and clueless.
Great video! Watching your videos has really inspired me to get my PPL. Just finished ground school and about to take my FAA written. See you in the sky!
That music tho. Know how some people are color blind? RUclips has clearly shown that some people are cheesy-music-blind. Or, would that be: Chessy-music-deaf?
It’s Tropical House music which has plagued RUclips for a few years now, I’m assuming since there is a lot of royalty free versions. It’s seriously one of my biggest pet peeves
Matt: based aircraft pay zero fees. Also: even on most international airports, when accepted, touch and go fees are zero. Just for the record. Oh, and stop patronizing. Yes the US is GA paradise, but, do you have universal health care?
Why TF would anyone want Universal Healthcare????? I can pay and get my treatment in days. I dont need to jump into a year long "queue" for basic treatment.

Holy Smokes guys! I hate to be negative, but in shot after shot I was screaming, "Who is flying the damn plane". Significant periods of time passing with not a glance of the panel. Flying in an unfamiliar area, at night, not only in weather but icing conditions, and a lot of distraction in the cockpit. Again, it isn't my intention to bash. But, if an emergency occurs, seconds can count and not having your head in the game can be disastrous. Thanks for the video and fly safe.
It's an edit of a long video. What do you think we do when we are at cruise level on autopilot? The normal thing - fuel, instruments, atc, all blend into "no surprises, smooth sailing". That simple.
48 years old and yes I LMAO when ATC responded with Direct DIK ...... Thx Matt you got me to go back and restart my Part 61 here in the Brooksville/Zephyrhills area in Florida. I love yours and Stevos vids
agreed. this wreaks of amateur hour to the point of negligence. Specially when you hear them asking control what the LSALT is for the area they are descending in.
Checking the freezing levels along your route before you fly is great, but the current outside air temperature will never lie to you. It was unexpected because at that OAT, airframe icing is extremely unlikely. I don't think this looks like amateur hour at all. What looks like amateur hour are two random guys on the internet dropping comments about an experienced pilot who has flown around the world in a NON known ice certified airplane. I've been flying professionally for quite a while, and from time to time, you get some ice when you didn't think you would.
I don't agree at all. Asking what the minimum altitude was, I personally think that was a great decision. In the US we call it the minimum vectoring altitude. If I started rapidly picking up ice in a piston single, where my only option to escape it was to go down and not up, I'd really like to know what the lowest altitude I can stay on my clearance is. Did you realize that they were navigating off airway? It's not as simple as just checking an MEA.
When you pick busy airports to land at with high landing fees you pay more. The landing fees are not the same at every airport in the UK. The same is true throughout Europe. The only annoying thing I found flying in the UK, flying VFR, was the rather chaotic and overlapping radar service. No doubt if you fly there regularly you figure out who is best to call up. But flying up there once from Switzerland I ended up calling people for radar services north of London based on my preplanning that I wouldn't have if I repeated the trip. The flight back after figuring it out went a lot smoother. France was so much more clear and organised that way.
This guy is a statistic waiting to happen! He flies crazy hours, spends more time watching screens than looking at the airplane, and is continuously distracted. He's got ADD and that's going to get him and his passengers killed. "Fly the plane kid, stop recording your imminent demise!"
Is that JP at 00:51 not wearing a hat? I'm shocked! Jokes aside, you guys are awesome! As a GA pilot in the united Sates, I am extremely happy that we have a system that allows us the freedom to fly the way we do. That said, it has never crossed my mind to attempt flying my single engine airplane across the oceans and around the world! You guys are truly inspirational!
That's really, really interesting what he says about flying in the UK vs flying in the US. I didn't grow up in the US but I live here. When I was driving in the UK it showed me how much more enjoyable driving in the US is. There was something incredibly restrictive about road rules in the UK; signs for *everything*, speed limits change sporadically and unpredictably, and cameras everywhere...you feel like you're being watched every second. Quite oppressive really. Not sure if that's what he meant but it rang a bell...
Dude... holy crap was that ATC difficult to understand! It's stressful enough flying into unfamiliar airspace without not being able to desypher the ATC commands. You guys have some balls!
nicholmesza - interestingly, (my experience through/into Germany from USA) is that most of the European Air Traffic Controllers enjoy speaking with American "English" speaking pilots... because I've noticed they pep/chirp up a bit when they realize they have a yankee conversing with them... just saying I've noticed it...
Yes the french accent of the ATC controller was so horrible (I'm french also but I have a better accent than him ahah) and even me I had some difficulties to understand what the ATC wanted to say
The middle of the US is a haven compared to the rest of the world, especially north western Europe, because the middle of the USA is relatively dead in terms of traffic. London, northern Europe etc is absolutely chock full of traffic, especially for the type of flying you wanna do. It's like wanting to ride your push bike in the middle of the freeway
Nice to see JP with you, Matt. Also here are to very young Pilots whom by the way, have both flown around the world. Very, Very few people in this planet can ever say that and here are two, especially Matt being one of the youngest doing it Solo...
Hi, as much as I liked Louis's channel during his world tour, I don't really feel a need to watch one more of Mr Guthmiller's videos. I'm a professionnal pilot flying through Europe for the last 25 years and never ever heard a so called professionnal pilot complaining so much about flying around Europe. At my early years of flying I used to go to different airports almost every day and I just delt with it. This is what flying is about, or you just want to make money out of it, and that is just business. No problem, go and find a corporate job. I just do not appreciate Mr Guthmiller's attitude towards Europe and as I see not much of the viewers do either. Anyways, young man, fly and fly safe and try to stay humble. Greetings
I didn't hear him complain about Europe has whole once, he complained about the fact that the UK doesn't follow the rest of Europe and the world in it's application of air traffic control processes. The dude has flow around the world, pretty sure he is qualified to have a voice on the different air traffic controlling processes and which ones he sees as working better or not.
"I didn't hear him complain about Europe has whole once, he complained about the fact that the UK doesn't follow the rest of Europe" Actually, the UK and Europe have a common set of rules. It is wrong that "anywhere other than the UK they do everything exactly the same". For a start most of the commonwealth countries (53) have a set of regs that are still very similar to the UK.
It's curious that Matt never seems to respond to constructive comments. Maybe he's afraid of learning from more experience people? A dangerous attitude to have, if that's his mindset.
That's the problem he wrongly assumed the UK works differently from Europe when it does not, London control just has tighter airspace because it is the heaviest congested airspace in Europe. And he was so blatantly wrong about the landing fee's thing.
There's a slight temperature rise on the OAT indicator because the air is compressed slightly in and around it. The whiz wheell the Navy issued me when I was a flight engineer in P-3s had an OAT temp rise correction. You need to account for that. If you're that close to freezing on the guage and there's any precipitation, you're in icing conditions. You should have mentioned that to ATC.
Always check paper charts, never use devices as primary for ANYTHING, and check weather before and during p/on the route of flight. Lots of things missed. Lucky kids to be alive still.
Also a difference between Europe and US is that recording and publicly disclosing ATC audio is illegal over here (at least in Germany). It is already illegal to listen to it if you are not a pilot in an airplane.
Except that one time when I was listening to ATC on my headphones while I was at the visitors deck at EDDK and the security guys of the airport did care. Luckily I only had to pay a fine and had to sign a paper that I would never do this again.
Then rather go to EDDL Observation Deck in the future. I regularly do some spotting there and listen to even ATC over speaker. No one cares and lately even a federal Policemen asked what Plane would be on the approach next. Besides, it is not strictly forbidden to listen to ATC Transmitions in Germany. But when doing so, u have to use Headphones and must not tell anyone about what you've just heard on the air ;)
Interesting, beautifully shot video by gutsy and capable young aviators. The Brits lambasting them below for expressing polite frustration with the distinctions in their airspace system and ATC can fly DIRECT DIK as far as I'm concerned :p
Matt, next time for IFR filing in Europe, just go to the website Eurofpl.com. Makes it easy! Not as easy as in Canada/US, but easier than filling out a paper ICAO plan
Landing fees are'nt that bad everywhere in the UK. At some smaller airfields its free and if you are flight training at larger airports they usually have a deal with the flight school so touch and go's, training circuits etc are not crazy money as its heavily discounted for flying schools. Nice video guys
Flying in and around Britain is vastly different to the USA. It's common sense to get to know the procedures before attempting to fly in the UK. Otherwise its confusing, you annoy others and potentially mistakes can happen.
LOL. U.K. pilots thinking their shit doesn't stink. Your airspace system sucks. It's over complicated and asinine. That's what happens when you turn it over to a private company. They fuck shit up.
He says it all “I don’t even know where we are going”.

Yep. Both the 210 and the Bonanza are wonderful airplanes and I would happily fly either.
Bingo!
The art of the troll.
Continue DIK was absolutely hilarious 😂😂. Lovely these videos 👏🏻👏🏻
Great vlog guys, brings back memories of my flying around...Its all good fun..privileged as well...Keep filming Matt and get back to your Bonanza asap.
Gotta love boys being boys! Super serious IFR flying but they erupt in laughter at "continue DIK" - ;-)
Karlrsruhe; I love that city: I spent three years in high school there between 1962-1965! I suppose it has changed a lot since then, but it's still a great city!
I'm glad im not the only one who doesn't understand a thing those ATC were saying
When we travelled around the USA in the early 70's we met a lovely retired couple in the Smokey Mountains , who noticing our Canadian number plates commented that it was a shame we didn't have mountains in Canada !! And that was nearly 50 years ago .
+Kryptoday BS!, they were just ignorant.
Some people see conspiracy in everything I guess . In the late 60's and early 70's we did live in Canada now we don't .
"Continue DIK " i laughed so hard !! I was expecting him to say delta india kilo, but nope, he said dik !
That’s because he’s a dik...
I'm personally surprised there was no comment on their current routing from KOK to DIK. Missed opportunity.
funny if you are 8 years old i guess
Having learned to fly in the UK and then being lucky enough to fly in Europe, Australia and the US I have to agree with you regarding UK complexity!
Not sure about the prop, but usually they have heat strips on it if the rest of the plane has de-icing or TKS.
not really. they have de ice boots. maybe not the best decision to fly in it but it would take a substantial amount of ice to make it crash
I think you are doing a great job. Wonderful experience, thanks for bringing us along.
Before takeoff checklist:
I pad on
Phone in everyone's hand
Camera in everyone's hand
Talk shit about people
Oh yea Wx fuel safety bla bla bla
Scary these youngsters are. What would they do if the us government shut off the satellites the control gps and phone communications. They'd be SOL, and probably not alive.
MH motorVlogs om
Haha. Nice one centurion
Although the Bonanza probably is better at most things, the 210 is better at:
Matt: *Filing the no camera sign*
I think Matt is really young. I would have been 100% more harsh at that age. Do we really want people to censor their comments to the extent that they don't say anything? He doesn't like the Europe setup. Why is that crushing to so many?
I like that this actually touches on some of the technical aspects of this trip. I watch Louis and I have no idea what is going on other than he is excited and clueless.
14:15 My favourite ATC exchange ever! well done, very entertaining :-)
ignore the flying police - pretty good fun watching you guys buzzing round Europe. Keep it up chaps!
DIK jokes are always funny no matter how old you are.
What a great trip. I saw all legs from Boston to Wien in a row. I hope the Corona lockdown is over soon and we can all fly GA again.
You'd be insane to fly in cloud without an aircraft approved for icing. Forecasts mean shit. If you're in cloud below zero, expect ice.
that was awesome ride along with you guys great footage as well matt!!!!!!
i am doing my thesis on de-icing procedures.
Coming back to watch this, the first airfield I flew GA from G-AYOL was the call sign. Long since deregistered.
I am laughing my head off watching you confirm DIK with ATC!
I love the shot with the no cameras sign
Wunderbar!
Great video! Watching your videos has really inspired me to get my PPL. Just finished ground school and about to take my FAA written. See you in the sky!
It's embarrassing to watch this as an American. You have so much to learn, and not just about flying.
he doing better than you so i wouldn't worry about him.
right, says a guy that I bet has never circumnavigated the earth in a GA.
@@frankword9889 He must have some interesting times with ATC if he thinks the UK is odd wait for Africa.
Welcome to the joys of flying in the UK!
Great content as always 👍🏻
Did you ever had someone have a look at that autopilot? The gain is too high and it’s constantly overcorrecting in roll
Just a fun fact when flying over the UK, you have to fly on the left as well like you do when driving. Not many know that.
Very well done. Enjoyed the comments, music and mix of views. Excellent!!
Matt: based aircraft pay zero fees. Also: even on most international airports, when accepted, touch and go fees are zero. Just for the record. Oh, and stop patronizing. Yes the US is GA paradise, but, do you have universal health care?
Lol we don't want that. 🤣
Why TF would anyone want Universal Healthcare????? I can pay and get my treatment in days. I dont need to jump into a year long "queue" for basic treatment.
@@frankword9889 You said it: YOU can pay; US is the land of individualists. Enjoy while you can.
@@maesc2001 Yep and I still dont pay as much as UK in taxes. I definitely am not interested in funding the Royal family sit sit on their royal asses. While telling me my Healthcare is free. You are ignorant if you think your healthcare is free. I would wager you pay twice what I pay and STILL have to wait for treatment. SUCKER!
I agree with you. The flying would be fun but the hoops you have to fly through to go anywhere would be a pain.
That pilot looks totally lost. Would never fly with him.
My friends from Sweden keep an airplane here in the states so they can enjoy the freedom of flying without excessive restrictions and fees.
Not reading back the majority of the mandatory read back instructions! Cleared to enter controlled airspace, service type etc should all be read back!
Well. Great flying. I am glad you all pulled out of your predicament.
Unexpected icing!!!! I’d better say unaware and unexpected pilot!
Ps check your freezing level weather charts next time you plan a flight!
agreed. this wreaks of amateur hour to the point of negligence. Specially when you hear them asking control what the LSALT is for the area they are descending in.
He asked for the minium altitude (IFR), not the lowest safe
S4 Aviator here is another smart ass pilot who has a couple hours on Cessna calls him self I’ve been flying professionally for quite a while!
Oh wait.... that's not JP. :)
Yeah we love red tape in the UK, not always a bad thing to be honest.
That was the BEST ending line to the video. Well done!
"We are so immature!" lolzz
What do you think of the new super hydrophobic coatings/ surface etchings that stop ice formation?
I hate that the reason he gets exited flying over Dunkirk is because of the movie
It's the first exposure a lot of people have to the whole thing.
I agree. That movie was not the best in my opinion. Too Hollywood-ized.
Looks like a busy cockpit with 3 Vlogers trying to document everything 😀
I like the last 5 seconds muhahah :)
I don't call it oppressive I call it safe🙂
Dude... holy crap was that ATC difficult to understand! It's stressful enough flying into unfamiliar airspace without not being able to desypher the ATC commands. You guys have some balls!
I am with Matt all the way. The communication confusion is disturbing.
nicholmesza - interestingly, (my experience through/into Germany from USA) is that most of the European Air Traffic Controllers enjoy speaking with American "English" speaking pilots... because I've noticed they pep/chirp up a bit when they realize they have a yankee conversing with them... just saying I've noticed it...
Louis owns the plane?!? Um, let him ride up front every now and then???
Nice to see JP with you, Matt. Also here are to very young Pilots whom by the way, have both flown around the world. Very, Very few people in this planet can ever say that and here are two, especially Matt being one of the youngest doing it Solo...
I know a guy who flew around the world in a 450 Stearman. BTW, icing at night was always a concern of mine, even in ships with boots and hot props.
"I didn't hear him complain about Europe has whole once, he complained about the fact that the UK doesn't follow the rest of Europe"
Actually, the UK and Europe have a common set of rules.
He was joking he was looking at his friends smiling
There's a slight temperature rise on the OAT indicator because the air is compressed slightly in and around it. The whiz wheell the Navy issued me when I was a flight engineer in P-3s had an OAT temp rise correction. You need to account for that. If you're that close to freezing on the guage and there's any precipitation, you're in icing conditions. You should have mentioned that to ATC.
Always check paper charts, never use devices as primary for ANYTHING, and check weather before and during p/on the route of flight. Lots of things missed. Lucky kids to be alive still.
This was an amazing flight all perspectives. Thanks for sharing u should re share again. When is the documentary coming out. Any word ?
...from KOK to DIK...😂
Great Video. I travel to Karlsruhe often for work. Nice city to visit in Germany!
Also a difference between Europe and US is that recording and publicly disclosing ATC audio is illegal over here (at least in Germany). It is already illegal to listen to it if you are not a pilot in an airplane.
But actually, no one really cares :D
Actually it is forbidden unless you are licensed. Check the StGB. But agreed, that should be abolished.
Totally. It makes absolutely no sense to prohibit listening in.
its been a long time nice to have you back good video
Interesting, beautifully shot video by gutsy and capable young aviators. The Brits lambasting them below for expressing polite frustration with the distinctions in their airspace system and ATC can fly DIRECT DIK as far as I'm concerned :p
Well I think I will keep an eye on this channel in anticipation of a day when we watch a replay of a classic (for aircraft type) gear up landing.
Matt, next time for IFR filing in Europe, just go to the website Eurofpl.com. Makes it easy! Not as easy as in Canada/US, but easier than filling out a paper ICAO plan
eurofpl.eu :)
Yes you’re right! It has been a few months since I’ve used their service
Don’t worry :) i actually saw your comment and I was interested so thank you for sharing :)
C Farrugia can someone tell me how much this cessna Cost??
Soufiane Bouatlaoui controller.com should have enough information about pricing ;)
