Craziest Flying Weather Ever Encountered

- What looks like a benign area of light rain quickly proves otherwise on a night IFR flight. Fly to one of my favorite airport restaurants and hear all about the Bonanzas to Oshkosh Battle of Fond du Lac.

Lightning tipped us off that convective mixing along a boundary was actually producing dangerous turbulence despite very little precipitation, similar to the conditions around a dry microburst. Shoutout to Scott Dennstaedt for helping fill in some of the more technical details. Check out his new book, Pilot Weather: www.pilotweath...

Electrical Recommendation: Check your alternator bearing for wear. I had odd electrical problems in my Mooney, to include vibration that we couldn't' get rid of with prop dynamic balance. Then the alternator died. Turns out it was just enough wear to generate transient voltage spikes and some vibration. We chased it for a year. New alternator and the glitches stopped and the vibration is gone.
I'm from Lemmon, SD and it's so cool to see someone from South Dakota doing all this. I think a lot of people feel stuck and like there is nothing to do, but if you get your pilots license the world is yours no matter where you're from.
WOW The quality of videos has just getting better and better, and the adventures of well. You deserve at least 800k
I've said it before, love your videos! Perfect combination of inflight and on ground portions. So many other videos just have in cockpit scenes (which is great), but you take us along for all aspects of your trips! I find it just as enjoyable to see the fueling, FBO's, sightseeing and of course the airport dinners and food as well. Thanks again for taking us along!
I have been viewing your videos for a long time now always hoping you would come by Minnesota. My late grandfather was a pilot and passed his passion on to me when I was younger. Flying Cloud was where he did his flight training. Also the restaurant at KSTP is where I celebrated my birthday this year. Its awesome seeing my home town of St Paul, This upload Felt like a real personal video for me. I really appreciate you bringing us along for the ride. Thanks Matt
12:15..I'm eating this food....and the plane's right there.....I'm- EATING this FOOD....andtheplane'srightthere!..../I'M EATING THIS FOOD AND THE PLANE'S RIGHT - THERE DUDE.
I remember over a year ago, watching your videos while reading for the written PPL A exam. Being 16 years old, and reading very badly translated theory was not easy. At the same time I hadn't started flight lessons yet, so my motivation was at a bottom level. However your videos kept my motivation up, and last week I passed the skills test for my PPL A :D Keep up the fantastic work Matt!
Im gonna start flight school this summer and all your videos are hyping me up!
Dude that’s awesome you park your plane like a care in front of a restaurant and eat a really good meal over looking the airport and your plane !!
Matt, the Battle at Fond du Lac was no joke. I was in the back with the Baron's and it was nothing but crazy. Same goes with your excellent decision to 180 after the lightning and microbursts, also crazy. I would love to hear what Scott D had to say about that. Safe flying and thanks for the great videos.
great job Matt
Matt, Inspirational is just not enough of a word to describe your travels. Seriously thinking about getting privately licensed and off of Xplane. lol
Great job with the diversion. That weather looked really gnarly. Thanks for sharing what it's like to really go places in a little airplane. This stuff gets me so excited to start my own cross-country flying.
God it’s gotta be soo amazing to fly at dusk in the summertime...smooth air the lights with the sun just setting......jelly JELLY JELLYFISH
So cool seeing you fly into fcm! the airport I did all of my training at
Flying Cloud is right near my home. So neat to see my area from the skies!
I love the way Matt greases his nosewheel down as gently as if lowering a baby's head onto a pillow
Another great video Matt. Good call on the diversion with that weather! Personally, I would have head back immediately if my alternator failed... especially because it was at night and you need your radio/avionics in the airspace you were headed. But it seemed like you knew what to do to troubleshoot it... which can make a big difference in making the go-no-go decision on whether to continue or head back. Looking forward to the next vid. Cheers!
The approaches into St Paul are so much fun - you go right by the buildings.
Absolutely love this guy
During my introduction flight my instructor flew me to triple tree for an airplane show. What a great way to get introduced into flying.
All I got to say, is that the engine in a Bonanza sounds soooo sweet on takeoff. That weather was definitely crazy.
So fun to watch you fly into and around an area I'm familiar with. Nice video.
Aye nice Matt, Aussie here, spent 4 months in St Paul on Uni exchange back when music was life and before Aviation has taken over.
I have an ex 2 hours north of the area tho :/
Great job Matt, as always, we loved the content, but your editing is super-pro!
Your videos are surreal. Amazing.
All those airplanes on frequency in minneapolis that end in "Mike Kilo" belong to my flight school down in Mankato.
I'm taking a trip to the Canadian Rockies later this fall and I'll be staying a night in Aberdeen on the way there!
Best aviation content out there, no contest.
at sea, there is a saying, The time to reef is when you first think "should I start reefing?".
there was some pilots version of that, though I don't remember how it goes..
in both cases it holds true
That is crazy bizzarre weather Matt... Great decision to divert!
Niko love your wings. TYS says hi.
Agreed @@2016-m1h
Lon Suder Agreed
Especially in a Bonny.
Matt I had a similar experience flying my Cirrus between northern MN and KSTP last summer. Crazy updrafts and downdrafts flying through light precipitation at night. When I looked at the historic radar the light turned into red around the time I flew threw.
Hi Matt
I follow your channel all the time, excellent content.
I want to congratulate you for doing the right thing and turning back when weather is challenging
Thanks for sharing your videos and your experiences with the flying community
I am not IFR rated but flying is all about keep learning and to make the right choices
Safe flying

Sensational Video Matt! Would really love to become a pilot like you soon! Liked
Hi Matt, my plane sits in the hanger, as weather here in the the Northeast, as you well know, has been abysmal. Going into retirement, I bought my last plane, an LSA. Oh how I wish I had one of my Grumman’s back, at least I could file and fly. It snowed again last night here in NY, but thanks to this video, I got my flying fix this morning. Thank you!
"The Battle Of Fond Du Lac".. Oh man, that is awesome! Hahaha! Thank God no one got killed. FDL is a great town though, so not a bad divert.
Those were some fantastic shots! I've loved your videos for years and they just keep getting better! What's the story with the low approaches though?
I was supposed to have my grad party at that airport! Great spot, hopefully I can return there when I get my license 😃
Great decision-making. Interesting how these tricky decision points can pop up quickly when all seems good.
Good decision, live to fly another day. Thanks for the video.
I recognized Lake Minnetonka on your way into Flying Cloud where I took flying lessons. The video of downtown Minneapolis and the 35W bridge was beautiful. Thanks for posting.
love your videos, keep them coming
Thanks for sharing - well done - good decision making. It seem your formerly very pronounced generator noise on the radio when receiving non local stations is almost entirely gone now. Seems like this time you got a better system grounding and/or better sparcplug wire shielding - congratulations.
Not fun when forecast does not agree with what you experience! Good call to divert. Loving the videos Matt, must be tough to keep the content fresh without doing the same stuff over and over. Good call to skip Bonanzas to Oshkosh, not vlogging it all means you can actually enjoy it without stressing about equipment and footage. Wow nearly 90k subs! Well done!
Have your techs considered ground loops in the electrical system? All shielded wire must have the shield one end only grounded. Also ground strapping must be connected from the engine to all parts of the airplane. without proper grounding a difference in potential occurs which is read in voltage
you are officially RUclips's airport restaurant reviewer/checker :)
All he does is fly to eat, fly to eat, oh and pick up friends to fly to eat. Good way to get on the diabetes train really quick sitting in a slow airplane all day trying to get somewhere. Need a much faster plane for all these trips and a whole lot more time in the gym instead of just sitting idle all day behind the wheel. Its like filming yourself as a truck driver but instead your just doing it above the clouds.
@@tropicthndr Damn dude you alright? Did someone hurt you?
pavelow36 I do not accept therefore he is not
Excellent decision making!
Hey Matt I recently found your channel and I'M ADDICTED! If your ever in SW Florida I would love to buy you dinner
I fly out of Crystal, Minnesota (KMIC) and flying cloud (KFCM) is my next door neighbor! Such an awesome video Matt!
And I just ate at Holman’s table yesterday!
One more amazing adventure and a top quality video editing.
Thanks for sharing. 👍🏼
Really awesome to see a fellow SD native on RUclips!
Hey matt, you make the best videos on youtube!
Was this VFR flying? do you fly most as VFR? or all. Is VFR generally enough to get around.
I start my flight school this summer this has been my dream for the longest time I got a scholarship to get in. Wish me luck guys
I hope you did well in flight school,
@@DivinityzBeAsT i did great currently at 70 hours of flight time just waiting for my birthday to get my license

Hey there is a 368hp up for sale on controller.com right now
If your ever in New Hampshire, you must go to the airfield cafe
Do you fly into flying cloud often matt? I fly a twin cessna 340 with a ram 7 conversion and i’m based in flying cloud
What's the little door/hatch that opens up in front of the wing on the fuselage at 11:51?
thats a cowl flap. it is opened on low airspeed and/or high power requirement situations such as takeoff or landing to increase cooling. In-Flight the airspeed and so the cooling is sufficient so they are usually closed
Hey Matt, Absolutely loving your videos. Every fly into Dayton, Ohio either Wright Brothers or Moraine Air Park. There's an amazing museum. Air Force on Wright Patterson Air Force Base. I'd highly recommend it. Can make a few videos there.
Love your videos Matt one question if you dont mind me asking - how do you afford to fly all the time?
Nice video. All those aircraft in formation, and no one thought of a divert procedure.🤔
Hi Matt,
I hope that you are doing well. Thank you for the videos, it is much appreciated!
I am looking into purchasing a Bonanza G36 and I am hoping you can answer some questions for me.
1. I would very much like to purchase the new BOSE PROFLIGHT AVIATION HEADSET. Would they work very well within the Bonanza?
2. What is your Lean of Peak power settings?
3. What is your Fuel consumption on LOP power settings?
4. What is your Fuel consumption on ROP power settings?
Looking forward to your feedback in this regard.
Kind Regards,
Jacques Smit
Looks like you might have left your lower landing light on with the gear up. Hope it's LED.
Rule number one when flying. Never feel pressured to fly! Regardless of why, diverting or aborting a flight for safety reasons, takes the highest precedence in all decisions. You did good my friend.
I disagree. Anyone can divert, it takes a real man to brave the weather and you *MUST* push your plane to the limit once in a while. If you're body is not dumping a quart of adrenaline into your system once an hour, it's not worth doing. And think of all the chicks you will get when they find out how brave you are! I tell you, this is how to pilot an airplane. I should be a flight instructor...
@@valuedhumanoid6574 LMAO!
@@valuedhumanoid6574 A dead flight instructor!!!
@@timshooter1005 Yeah, I was just being stupid and trying to be a troll. You can tell how absurd my comment is (I hope) That's like the old adage "anyone can quit smoking. It takes a real man to live with cancer" kind of thing. There are old pilots and bold pilots, but there's no old bold pilots.
@@valuedhumanoid6574 respect.
Fun video to watch! Worst part was that Owen guy, but you did great. 😂
Last summers weather in MN was terrible, T-storms constantly! SWMN was a swamp, farm fields looked like lakes. BTW, this winter hasn't been any better! Snow storm after snow storm.
Amazing as usual !
How come you can move your control column from left seat to right ?
You never use a checklist? I almost got failed during my FAA check ride for not using one
Alternator playing up at night?? Big call to continue any flight at night with a twerky alternator.. Glad you made the call to return.
Great decision brother!
Any joy on the alternator issue?
Just stumbled onto this video. And in the market for a plane here soon. Is there a particular reason you have 2 GTN-750’s?! This just seems like overkill.
TY for the Great Videos
Smart choice... Casa is gonna let you keep your licence now!
Your a great pilot and super cute!
What happens if you have an electrical failure in your airplane? Do you have a standby battery? Or any backup instruments powered by something else ?
ruclips.net/video/hmhETx-zV6g/видео.html
Hey Matt, do you ever simulate total automation failure? (Autopilot gone, and glass out too?) How many hours a year do you simulate flying IMC with noticeable turbulence without using any autopilot? Doing so will keep you sharp! Wouldn't want to lose your skills like one of those Airbus "Systems Supervisors." Enjoy watching your videos! Fly safe!
Do you have a parrashoot if somethink would go wrong??
Great decision. U keep professionalism at its peak love it. Hey try the new bose proflight and do review
In the works 😉
Awesome. Can’t wait to take u to lunch in Boise
Matt, great video. Question please: where did you get the camera mount that fits on your headrest support bar? And can you identify it for me. Thanks
Hi friend, great video as with every one you make and post! If I ever go by your hometown, I will let you know in advance, so I would have the honor of meeting you in person. I've really come to admire you and enjoy your flying experiences. Take care, and safe flying! 😉🤗
I like the party started song
Quick question Matt, what settings do you use on your GoPro to shoot the G500? Even with a prop filter I get the scanning effect in the airplane I fly. I would love to show that thing off more.
Return of the pito tube cover!!! I love it!
I’ve been watching your videos for quite sometime now and you do a fantastic job of recording your experiences also not to mention the quality of the videos are impeccable. I have one question although and there is no correct answer but I wanted to know, what makes you want to fly every other day?
Love the video 7HP!
So I definitely thought you said you wanted to pick up an IFR to fly in a cloud at 3:10 . Took me till 7:25 for me to realize you said Flying Cloud and were talking about an airport.
32 years of airline flying. Would not even think of flying single engine single pilot night. 😂
Pitoh heat works!👍🏼😎
Totally agree with the divert call. Great CRM by you and Owen resulting in solid ADM.
Aber means estuary in Welsh
I’m sure it’s hard flying and editing all these videos but I can’t the only one who wishes there were more frequent videos 😂

Are you going to Chicago?
Its a shame some of your recent videos have become long advertisements for products such as Bose and Sirius XM because your content is fascinating and something few people around the world ever get to do.
Thank you for sharing. Great job like always!!
Did I hear "alternator out?" Turn around. Glad you made it.
I apologise for making these questions, but I’ve had them on my mind for a long time now; first, how old are you? I think you are olden than you look... second, where do you get all the money to be flying so much? I’m struggling getting the money to start studying to become a pilot... and finally, are you studying or have you studied in college? Keep up the videos, they are great !!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Guthmiller
Hey Matt, looked like an experience. I have a question, and you have way more experience than I do and know your plane like the back of your hand. But why did you continue with a night flight into IFR conditions with an alternator issue right after take off? So not judging, just trying to see why it was still a go situation.
Good decision especially with the continuing electrical hassle. Lightning strike wouldn't be in 7HP's best intrrest.
Never know... might actually fix it... :-P
