Nope. We exist. Never used TikTok and never will. And I'm a zoomer but I think TikTok and bite-sized media destroys peoples attention span. I remember going on a date with a woman and we hung out in her car after dining out and she legit wanted me to watch TikTok vids with her like a dope fiend trying to get her fix. It was bizarre.

TikTok got banned in India in 2020 and I remember Instagram finding an opportunity and launching "Reels" and everyone migrated there.

That’s not the big problem though. It definitely helps, but ideally social media CAN exist, there just should ever be any kind of discussion involved. So Twitter for example shouldn’t exist. Private messaging is ok but still dangerous it’s just necessary. Facebook can exist with just reacts. Humanity needs this. Take away the comments sections. Why are we fighting for trans people when we should be fighting for our kids future.

I don't think TikTok or short-form repetitive content is good for anyone, especially children, but that's not why I support the ban. The real issue is that it is giving a foreign adversary direct access to our internet usage data.
Then they should pass laws about internet usage data. Not pass laws to force divestment.

@@simmysunshine7283 Sorry, I didn't really make my point comprehensive enough. I don't like that a multimedia company with direct oversight from a foreign adversary has access to usage data OR that they can control content algorithmically to sway the opinions of users and impact the literal brain development of the children who use it (clearly in a way that is degenerate to becoming a functioning human being). In general I think if there were a non-Orwelian way to keep all social media 18+ or even 21+ so that children and young adults aren't exposed to media that is functionally making them dumber, I'd be all for it, but I don't think that is really possible without online ID verification which is a no-way-back point for authoritarian state control of the internet.
What I forgot to mention in my original post is that TikTok does an egregiously terrible job at protecting children from adult predators. The sexualization of children on that app is completely rampant and TikTok does very little about it, instead giving tools for perverts to easily engage with minors. My experience is notably anecdotal and I have never installed TikTok myself, but my spouse has showed me the comment sections of some particularly creepy "trends" involving kids and it's absolutely wild. I saw a RUclips video where a journalist was interviewing children on the app who were essentially doing softcore cam girl work, and the feed was completely riddled with these minors and super active adult chats donating sums of money for those children to perform fetish acts on camera. That alone was my first reason for wanting it removed, and I think that argument pretty much stands on its own.

What happens to the app if tourists to the US have it on their phone? Does it stop working? Delete itself? Phone confiscated by customs for being a foreign agent?
It would be region locked, everyone with US region Android/iOS devices would not be able to find it on the app stores nor be able to download it onto their phones and connect to it's server. Only way around it would probably be to use a VPN. Honestly though, I'm pretty sure they are trying to force ByteDance to give ownership to a US owned corporation, and the TikTok fever dream will continue to rot people's brain.

I don't have toktik but i understand both points of view. On one hand China can influence the public and promote content that can stir up the American people. Ironically, the same content in China would be banned because anything there that goes against the governments rule can land you in deep shit. On the other hand, if the US bans tiktok, China could ban an American company in return and that could snowball into a major issue between the two.
Eventually though i don't think it will be banned.
China doesn’t allow their citizens to use any American (or otherwise foreign) social media/apps anyway. (Their only workaround is VPNs, if they want to risk arrest or worse) Even TikTok is banned for young people over there…

Do you realize that TikTok is banned in china (more precisely, its unavailable for download and if you do try to get it some other way, I wouldnt be surprised if that impacts your social credit score 😉)? And that despite this, china is angry that this chinese app might be banned in the US.
China uses a very similar app named "Douyin" that everyone is allowed to use freely. Also China says US banning Tiktok is an act of bullying. Is that because China makes so much $ off of Tiktok?
I could never handle Tik tok. I don’t even like reels. I miss when Instagram was just photos. The moving image and audio are over stimulating.
