    When Will I Achieve My Goal?
    Did you know that we’re basically programmed to ask this question? To ask, “When will I achieve my goal?”
    When we are kids, we are told that if we clean our room and take out the trash every day, we will get our allowance at the end of the week.
    When we are in high school, we are told that if we do this homework, study that, and show up to class, we will get a good grade at the end of the semester.
    When we are in college, we are told that if we take this many units and get this grade, we will get a college degree in four years.
    And guess what, they were telling the truth!
    The problem is… the real world doesn’t work like that.
    The Real World Isn’t Structured
    Growing up and in school, life is as structured as it will ever get. If you do X and Y, then you get Z. It’s a simple math equation like this: a + b = c.
    But when you get to the real world, the equation is crazy complex with A-Z, the Greek alphabet, swirly symbols, and more!
    That’s because there are far more variables at play, and most of them are out of your control! Take exercise, for instance (and, by the way, this is especially true after you hit your thirties)…
    Two people can do the same exact exercise and eat the same exact food and end up with completely different results. Even if you compare two men with the same height and build and physical abilities, they’ll still get different results!
    That’s because their bodies are incredibly complex machines with variations down to the genes in their DNA.
    I’ll stop with the academic analogies now but hopefully, you get the point: Stop trying to figure out when you will achieve your goal. There are just too many variables to work with.
    Instead of trying to determine the timeline, try to identify the variables (aka HABITS) you can control.
    The Variables You Can Control
    When the real world slapped me in the face, I took a closer look at what I did growing up. And I had a EUREKA moment. A total eyes-popping, hands-in-the-air, why-didn’t-I-ever-realize-this-before-moment…
    I realized that I had been focusing on the end result, not the process.
    I had been focusing on the fact that I got my allowance every seven days, good grades every semester, and a college degree in four years.
    But, I SHOULD HAVE been focusing on the chores I did every day, the studying I did every night, and the classes I attended every week. THOSE ACTIONS are what led to the end results.
    Now, those end results are pre-packaged for success by your parents, teachers, and professors. Like I said, if I did X and Y, then I got Z in a predetermined timeframe.
    However, the same concept applies to the real world if you accept two big differences:
    - There is X Y Z A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V plus the Greek alphabet, some lines, infinity symbols, brackets, and so on and so on
    -AND-
    - There is no predetermined timeframe!
    The “timeframe” is it happens when it happens. As sucky as that is, it’s the truth. It’ll happen when it happens.
    But let me tell you something that is really important for you to hear…
    IT WILL HAPPEN!
    It will happen IF you take the actions that point toward your desired end result. You will achieve your goals IF you focus on the constructive habits instead of the outcome.
    If you create the HABITS, you will eventually achieve what you want.
    If you identify some of the key variables and continually apply them, you will succeed! You don’t even need all the variables and the Greek alphabet and the infinity symbol…
    But, the more constructive habits you identify and the more consistently you apply them, the more quickly you’ll succeed. The more quickly it will happen.
    The Question You Should Be Asking
    Instead of asking, “When will I achieve my goal?” you should ask:
    “How long will it take me to generate the HABITS I need to generate?”
    If you ask yourself this question, the results will come. The results you are looking for will come if you create the habits and take the actions consistently.
