Super Mario 3D World is essentially like this. You can pick between 4 characters that have unique abilities. Amazing platforming, 4 person multiplayer, secret bonus worlds, etc.
Am... have you ever played this smb 2? super mario 3d land doesnt have nothing to do with it... I mean.. having 4 players doesnt mean that it has essence of smb 2, in 3d land everything is themed from classic smb 1, 3 super mario world, from the music, sfx backgrounds enemies, you name it. In smb 2 you dont have suits, you have a 4 life meter, every time you find a secret mushroom.. the music is themed diferent, doors, pots, not pipes, you basic moves are jumping and grabbing things, every enemy is different, bosses - mouser, birdo triclyde etc, a diferent objective. It has overall a different look and feel. At the end of each stage you dont have poles, you have to beat the boss then slot machine, coins dont work the same way, you have cherries... well how much can I say...
I actually prefer the way old NES games look on a decent CRT. I don't like how they look on modern HDTVs. That super-pixelated look ruins it. The way the CRT fuzzes over all those edges is how the graphics were intended to be viewed, and it just looks much better that way - kinda makes it look better than it actually is, if that makes sense.
Ya CRT's almost had a built in AA due to the scan lines ;p it smoothed everything together. It only really applies to the NES era stuff though. I'd much rather play 16 bit onward on a modern HDTV.

Mario 3 had much more variety in the levels, Mario World is just an Island (why wasn't it called Mario's Island, very fitting since the sequel is Yoshi's Island). World's sprites were so bad, they were embarrassed by the Bowser sprite and had to change it for Mario Maker!
I loved this game just as much as Super Mario 1 and 3. I always used a mix of different characters based on the stage. In 1-2, I always used Toad because that section with a LOT of vegetables can net you a lot of coins. Enough to get a lot of extra lives by the bonus game. Designer, programmer, producer are all different job titles in game development and you seem to conflate them around 5:00. Miyamoto was a producer for both, which may greenlight certain things but that's different than actually designing it. Miyamoto was also a designer for SMB, but NOT Doki-Doki Panic. Doki-Doki had a different team of designers. They did both share programmers Nakago and Morita though, but doki-doki had more programmers on the team and we don't know who did what. So yeah there was some sharing of personnel so you still have a point even though you butchered the details, but your point should be tempered with these details. It's not like one guy made it and it's the same guy, therefore cannon. It wasn't the exact same production team, some people had different roles, and they originally set out to make a different product. So anyone arguing the American SMB2 is not cannon may still have a point. Also, the reason the American SMB2 came into existence is an important factor. It wasn't something they set out to do or did because they thought it would be good/fun. They were told that the original SMB2 would be too hard for Americans and they needed to come up with something else quick. They didn't have enough time to make something from the ground up with this deadline so they re-purposed doki-doki. So it's existence is somewhat unintentional.
I absolutely loved this version of Mario 2 and still do. I remember doing all kinds of chores and saving up the money to get this and Mario 3 from Kiddy City.
We got this game for Christmas in 1988 and I've loved it since release. I thought the character selection was great and added a lot of strategy and variety for an NES game. People actually don't like SMB2? That astounds me.

Mario 2 is great. I think the reason people won't like it is because it was completely different from Mario 1 and Mario 3 came out not too long after it and Mario 3 completely blew 2 out of the water. I personally love Mario 2. Got it the year it came out.

All the kids in the neighborhood loved this game. Nobody ever said it sucked! It wasn't until maybe 2000 or 2001 that I started reading comments on the internet where people were shitting on it for being a rebadge of Doki Doki Panic. The real Mario 2 was a pile of shit with no creativity. The real Mario 2 was the crappy expansion pack of it's day. Same graphics, same style, just some level designs moved around and a poison mushroom gimmick added in.
Mario 2 lost level was just an expansion with hard levels. But that doesn't mean it's shitty. It provide impressive speed run gameplay with those high level players.

I noticed the background color is glitched. When loading a world/scene, 1 tile's width (8 pixels) disappears from the left. This is completely wrong (which screams emulated), as the background is the whole screen, including about 12 pixels left and right of then playfield, and 2 lines below it. (This of course wasn't needed here.) Yes, I know it's emulated, but they didn't quite get rid of the "Emulated" look.
I tried explaining this game to my 8 year old niece on the NES Classic and gave up after about 20 seconds. I was like, "Pick up that grass. You might pull up a clump of grass that has a potion attached to it. Then you throw the position on the ground and it turns into a door. Then you go into the door to go into the reverse world and.... you know what? Let's play a different game." Love Mario 2.
7:54 Actually: Toad is the only character in SMB2 who runs faster than normal while carrying an enemy or "heavy" items. Heavy items include mushroom blocks and keys. Heavy items do not include ripe veggies. As mentioned above Toad will run at 43 speed instead of 36 (~0.44 pixels per frame faster). This is quite a significant speed boost and often makes it worth it for Toad to go out of his way to grab an item.

What a lot of people don't seem to understand is that this was always meant to be a Mario Brothers game from the get-go. In Japan, it would have been the third. Miyamoto said "Okay, we've done the side-scrolling thing twice now, let's throw in vertical scrolling." And they started work on it as a two-player cooperative game. Then Fuji TV's Dream Factory got involved and the game was suddenly reworked into "Dream Factory: Heart-Pounding Panic." After that was over with and the fact that Nintendo was refusing to release the Japanese "Super Mario Brothers 2" in America, Miyamoto and company went back to work and took "Heart-Pounding Panic" and converted it back into the Mario Brothers game it was meant to be to begin with for the U.S. market. So griping about this game because "Aw, they just took Doki Doki Panic and changed it" becomes irrelevant.

I loved this game. I played it at other people's houses in the early 90s when I was like 8 or 9 years old and I saw a copy of it in the display case in one of the Wee Book Inn shops in Edmonton (use book store). The copy was 15 dollars CAN, 40 CAN for new copies of NES titles at the time. I didn't have the money on hand ad I said to my DAD. Please. Take my next 6 weeks of allowance (15 bucks) to get this title. He used the classic parent line "Oh. It will be there next time". I knew damn well that it was not going to be there next time. Sure enough when we ventured from Slave Lake, Alberta to Edmonton. Gonzo. So happy to play this title at a friends house in the mid 90s on his SNES All Stars copy.
I remember playing this on Super Mario All Stars. I remember playing it on an emulator and loved the way the NES did it. I also like the PCM sound effects.

Kids were exposed to far more violent entertainment in the 80's/early 90's than kids nowadays. Everyone's far more sheltered these days.

RemixedVoice It was just the culture in general. Look at Splatterhouse 2. Wolfenstein, Mortal Kombat, Doom...all of them pre ESRB, meaning they were meant for kids. Culture was way less sanitized back then.
Mario runs fast for a fatso, and is the well-rounded character. Luigi jumps high. Peach can float, but is slow, jumps low, and is weak. Toad is stronger and runs fast, but his jump is broken as hell. And as they said below, he runs fast while holding something, runs faster than Mario as it seems.
Mario is the well-balanced character, Luigi can jump higher than the other characters, Toad can run faster and pick up items/enemies quickly, and Peach is the weakest character who has the ability to hover in mid-air while jumping.
I remember having a Super Mario 2 book, it was like a choose your own adventure where you could follow either Mario, Luigi, Toad or Peach. Don't know if I still have it or not.
I'm going to go to Full Sail university and then make an early access game that never leaves Alpha, abandon it and then work on a huge expensive hyped AAA game that is released unfinished. I want to live the dream.
IIRC the running was added to SMB2US - Doki Doki Panic never had running. In fact, thanks to the running, combined with Luigi's higher jump, one can skip over certain sections that must be dealt with head-on in Doki Doki Panic. I think part of 7-1 is like this. Also, I think the high jumper was female in DDP. The switched the order of the characters for SMB2US.

People think the console war was between Sonic and Mario,but it was actually between Mario and Mega Man.Both SMB 3 and MM3 were great games.SMB 2 and MM2 were seen as different but still fun.
No offense, but how in any way or shape is Mega Man 2 different from Mega Man 1? It was practically the same game, no? Just more refined.
Mario 2 is great. I think the reason people won't like it is because it was completely different from Mario 1 and Mario 3 came out not too long after it and Mario 3 completely blew 2 out of the water. I personally love Mario 2. Got it the year it came out.

All the kids in the neighborhood loved this game. Nobody ever said it sucked! It wasn't until maybe 2000 or 2001 that I started reading comments on the internet where people were shitting on it for being a rebadge of Doki Doki Panic.
The real Mario 2 was a pile of shit with no creativity. The real Mario 2 was the crappy expansion pack of it's day. Same graphics, same style, just some level designs moved around and a poison mushroom gimmick added in.
Mario 2 lost level was just an expansion with hard levels. But that doesn't mean it's shitty. It provide impressive speed run gameplay with those high level players.
Actually some of those songs from the 90's were New Jack Swing not Hip Hop.

I noticed the background color is glitched. When loading a world/scene, 1 tile's width (8 pixels) disappears from the left. This is completely wrong (which screams emulated), as the background is the whole screen, including about 12 pixels left and right of then playfield, and 2 lines below it. (This of course wasn't needed here.)

I tried explaining this game to my 8 year old niece on the NES Classic and gave up after about 20 seconds. I was like, "Pick up that grass. You might pull up a clump of grass that has a potion attached to it. Then you throw the position on the ground and it turns into a door. Then you go into the door to go into the reverse world and.... you know what? Let's play a different game."

I don't hear really at all that people don't like this game, it's usually Zelda 2 because they suck at it.
7:54 Actually: Toad is the only character in SMB2 who runs faster than normal while carrying an enemy or "heavy" items. Heavy items include mushroom blocks and keys. Heavy items do not include ripe veggies. As mentioned above Toad will run at 43 speed instead of 36 (~0.44 pixels per frame faster). This is quite a significant speed boost and often makes it worth it for Toad to go out of his way to grab an item.
Super Mario Bros. 2 is definitely one of the greatest games ever made, especially for its time!

What a lot of people don't seem to understand is that this was always meant to be a Mario Brothers game from the get-go. In Japan, it would have been the third. Miyamoto said "Okay, we've done the side-scrolling thing twice now, let's throw in vertical scrolling." And they started work on it as a two-player cooperative game. Then Fuji TV's Dream Factory got involved and the game was suddenly reworked into "Dream Factory: Heart-Pounding Panic." After that was over with and the fact that Nintendo was refusing to release the Japanese "Super Mario Brothers 2" in America, Miyamoto and company went back to work and took "Heart-Pounding Panic" and converted it back into the Mario Brothers game it was meant to be to begin with for the U.S. market.
So griping about this game because "Aw, they just took Doki Doki Panic and changed it" becomes irrelevant.

I loved this game. I played it at other people's houses in the early 90s when I was like 8 or 9 years old and I saw a copy of it in the display case in one of the Wee Book Inn shops in Edmonton (use book store). The copy was 15 dollars CAN, 40 CAN for new copies of NES titles at the time. I didn't have the money on hand ad I said to my DAD. Please. Take my next 6 weeks of allowance (15 bucks) to get this title. He used the classic parent line "Oh. It will be there next time". I knew damn well that it was not going to be there next time. Sure enough when we ventured from Slave Lake, Alberta to Edmonton. Gonzo. So happy to play this title at a friends house in the mid 90s on his SNES All Stars copy.

The blue porcupine's name is Porcupo. Both this game and Super Mario World showed the enemies names during the end credits.
While I"m not a huge fan of this game, but the fact each of the 4 characters have different play styles makes it's really interesting.
I remember playing this on Super Mario All Stars. I remember playing it on an emulator and loved the way the NES did it. I also like the PCM sound effects.

I haven't played this game since I was a kid on the All-Stars compilation! So much nostalgia! I've definitely played the other games on it since, but I'll have to play this again sometime.

I don't understand this notion that the world is more receptive to violence these days; it isn't. Kids were exposed to far more violent entertainment in the 80's/early 90's than kids nowadays.

I have so many wonderful memories playing this in the early 90's. The ice level was one of my favs.
Mario runs fast for a fatso, and is the well-rounded character. Luigi jumps high. Peach can float, but is slow, jumps low, and is weak. Toad is stronger and runs fast, but his jump is broken as hell. And as they said below, he runs fast while holding something, runs faster than Mario as it seems.

Mario is the well-balanced character, Luigi can jump higher than the other characters, Toad can run faster and pick up items/enemies quickly, and Peach is the weakest character who has the ability to hover in mid-air while jumping.

I remember having a Super Mario 2 book, it was like a choose your own adventure where you could follow either Mario, Luigi, Toad or Peach. Don't know if I still have it or not.
I'm going to go to Full Sail university and then make an early access game that never leaves Alpha, abandon it and then work on a huge expensive hyped AAA game that is released unfinished. I want to live the dream.
IIRC the running was added to SMB2US - Doki Doki Panic never had running. In fact, thanks to the running, combined with Luigi's higher jump, one can skip over certain sections that must be dealt with head-on in Doki Doki Panic. I think part of 7-1 is like this. Also, I think the high jumper was female in DDP. The switched the order of the characters for SMB2US.
