- Did you really write Sherry in 15 minutes? Can you tell us the story? "Well it's very short story!"
Original Four Season Bob Gaudio explains how he wrote Sherry.

Bob Gaudio has never got the credit in music that he deserves.I think he is on par with Brian Wilson of the beach boys.
Oh how right you are!!!! It’s always Brian Wilson Brian Wilson, Bob Gaudio was on his fourth number one ☝️ hit record when Brian Wilson barely wrote his first number one ☝️ hit record. Bob Gaudio is so talented but never ever receives the credit so deserved.
better for me
Elton had Bernie, Frankie had Bob… I’ms sure you could create a long list of writer/singer combo’s.
Agree.
You know, Bob aged well. You can tell he still has that creative spark in him.
One of America's greatest songwriters. Brilliant talent.
North American or USA American you mean. I am Chilean and I am also American. America is not a country, it is a continent.
America means all of the Americas…North, Central, and South.
The real brains of the Four Seasons
FINALLY!...someone gives Bob Crewe some credit for his work involving the Four Seasons. Crewe was the one who suggested the song be done in falsetto.
This man should be better known I've only just heard of him from watching the Jersey boys film. I checked his CV - he's modern musics equivalent to Mozart or Beethoven a genuine genius.
Oh, serious music fans know who he is. He produced six albums for Neil Diamond in the '70s and wrote the monster hit "You Don't Bring Me Flowers."
@@randyjordan5521 Hahah! First i thought its a joke describing this as a "monster hit" : Cause its a song I didn´t know at all.Especially Gaudio. And i´m right: It´s written by Neil Diamond and,for my opinion, not a very good one. Not the class and style of Gaudio. But it was a No1-Hit nevertheless. Maybe pushed by the funny mix with the Streisand-Version in the radio before
You are absolutely right this man should be better known. He is by far one of the most successful music figures going back to the 1950’s when he wrote the big hit Shorts Shorts. It may not be a so called serious song but come on at 16 years old!!!! Yes 16 years old Bob Gaudio had a number three hit record on the charts. Hey you have to start some where. I’m mean come on look at Brian Wilson’s Surfin, its not the greatest ( I like It) but he receives so much more credit. Bob Gaudio was on his fourth number one ☝️ hit record when Brian Wilson was barely on his first.
You are so correct, Bob was one of the greatest artists of the 60s (and beyond) In my view the only one from the 60s who could rival Bob was Paul McCartney.Bob should be just as famous it's heartbreaking that he isn't
This man is a musical genius. There are very few that can come close to the music he made.
Bob is a songwriting legend.
Bob - thank you for all your wonderful music over the years! You and Frankie had magic together.
Definitely an ingenious writer. His music is so original yet very catchy.
Gaudio did an ingenious job of updating Four Seasons' sound for the 70s while still keeping their tradition. I didn't like all of disco but they were one of bright spots.
I remember listening to the radio (AM, of course) in high school, and songs would come and go. One night about 7:00, they played a new song called, "Sherry." I was awestruck. I'd never heard anything like it. I waited for them to play it again, and it wasn't until around 9:00. I called the station to ask them to play it again. I must have stayed up until 2 or 3 in the morning waiting to hear that fantastic song and that amazing collection of voices just one more time. I'd never had this happen before, and it's never happened since.
I think it's criminal that Rolling Stone magazine didn't list one song written by Bob Gaudio in their compiled list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. Gaudio is a musical genius. And melodies like Big Girls Don't Cry and Walk Like a Man, Silence is Golden among others prove it.
That is because they really don’t know sh_t and are just an overblown bunch of egoistic self-proclaimed experts who think they dictate what people should listen to. I ignore that garbage and saw through it when I was 19 years old. No one needs to be realized or proclaimed by that rag and it’s sycophant camp followers in the journo world.
gaudio is a genius .rolling stone isnt even worth using for dogs to piss on
That's cuz rolling stone's a bunch of drug addicted no nothing hacks.
I would absolutely love to take Bob Gaudio to lunch and tell him how much his music has meant to me over the last 58 years.
great song writer loved the jersey boys
He said "Bob Crewe broke the tie". Crewe was the 4 Seasons manager and Gaudio's mentor as a songwriter. Also a musical genius.
+Bill Smith Frankie said Bob Crewe couldnt write music only lyrics before he wrote songs with Frank Slay
Lived around the corner from me in Bergenfield, NJ.
Just a huge thank you, Bob for sharing your beautiful talent with all us! Wow!
Musical genius
imma gonna give you the 13th like.Should I?
Amazing songwriter. I have been performing Cant Take My Eyes Off You and The Sun Aint Gonna Shine Anymore for 40 years. Both hits he wrote
Your brother was my music teacher in the 60's. At Juan Cabrillo middle school in Santa Clara, CA. He brought out the musical me. In third grade I got the worst grade ever in my life for refusing to perform. Your brother Mr. Gaudio brought me out of that. I did a musical skit with one other girl for a talent show. Wow, flash from the past for me and appreciation for your brother. I am still listening to your music, so kudos to you too.
Very great songwriter I hope you’re doing very well at this time. Great Health and happiness with your life. 🤗
The MAN!!! A true Genius!
Loved Clint Eastwood's movie `Jersey Boys'. All the songs were fabulous, can't get them out of my head lol ... Want to see JB when it comes to Sydney!
I can't get them out of my head, either and it's been about a month since I saw the movie!
Not a good one for Eastwood. Not his style.
@@gdalcorso1I wasn't the 4 seasons style either. The movie missed alot. The songs was out of order. They added WAY too much BullSh@t. They never ONCE mentioned the 70s Four Seasons. Gerry, Don, John, Joe, And Lee.Without them there would never have been. My Eyes Adored You, or December ,1963. (Oh, what a night).
Such great talent!!! Loved the movie too!
You can still see a youthful face in him. Freaky.
Also co wrote when he was with the Royal Teens Who wears Short Shorts (with Buddy Randell who sang and wrote Lies, Lies) .... Amazing song writer... I used to watch them on the Ed Sullivan.
I consider Bob Gaudio one of the finest pop composers ever! And the Four Seasons' harmonies were just as tight and flawless as the Beach Boys. In short, I disagree with your statement.
Here's one measure of The Four Seasons' greatness: The gorgeous single "Rag Doll" had the equally gorgeous "Silence is Golden" as its B side! That song went on to be covered by the British band The Tremeloes and became a #1 hit for them.
Genius pop song writer......recall flipping one of the hit 45's over just to hear what the tune sounding like....never expecting anything good, cause in those days the flip side was called the "B side"..low and behold..."Silence is Golden" just blew my mind!!!!
When you talk about great record producers / songwriters / etc. of the 1960, Bob's name almost never gets mentioned among the great ones. . . it's always Phil Spector and George Martin this, or Brian Wilson that.
bob, I love you
He still looks the same!
The movie was GREAT!!! Yes, it's a routine story; from rags to riches to misfortunes to resurrection. But what a music! Just great. I was shocked to know Frankie Valli sang Moody's Mood For Love. Lyric by Eddie Jefferson. There I go , there I go, there I go,,,,,,,,,,
I didn't know Frankie did that song. I fell in love with that song years ago. I am familiar with King Plesures version called " Im In The Mood For Love. " I was told that it was really a very melodically variated " jazz version of the song " Im In The Mood For Love. I bought that record a very long time ago. I want so much to see the film.
No problem. And I highly recommend seeing Jersey Boys. If they ever come to your neck of the woods, go see them. You won't be disappointed.
Both the Beach Boy's and Four Seasons are great and deserves a lot of respect. Nobody should put one over the other.
Bob is a pure genius.
I saw Jersey Boys performed in S.F. a couple of years ago. Awesome musical, and quite an eye opener. I didn't know the band had had several run-ins with the mob.
this is my favorite stage show
Im in love with this man
thanks Bob
He will be 74 on Nov. 17 (2016).
Thanks for sharing
I find Bob Gaudio rather underrated
No doubt about it, man!!!!!!
I like this guy.
One of the most under rated tunes Bob wrote was "
I'll Be Big Man In Town"!!!
im the great fans of yhr four seasons. like thier songs
Go see Jersey Boys if it comes to your town. Saw it today, it was my second time
Bob Gaudio wrote great songs for Frankie and the Four Seasons
Besides his incredible musical talents, Bob Gaudio was the best-looking member of the original Four Seasons.
Check out the "Walk Like a Man" video, where they sing from a balcony: so frigging handsome! (20 years old back then).
Four Seasons were the first rock band to have three straight #1’s. Gaudio wrote all of them.
Was Bob Gaudio the tall, really good-looking member of the 4 Seasons? The one that eventually grew the beard?
Yes.
Yes.
Yep, but they all grew beards by the late '60s.
Great song
i grew up in Brooklyn/Queens. I dug 4 S from day one. Would love o see Jersey Boys..
Beneath the beach boys? No way, the Four Seasons are the best there is when it comes to rock's golden days. S'forza de Italiano!
Why shouldn't Sherry have taken only 15 minutes? It wasn't Pet Sounds - it was a pop doo-wop single. Any composing in that medium that took longer would probably lose momentum.....I heard it was originally "Perri" for Perri Productions....
I love the name gaudio
what a great way of saying it,,,what's Frankiei got to say about it? Your input is appreciated, since you guys were such a big influence on our lives
I respectfully disagree. The Four Seasons could hold their own. They did some incredible music back then.
Wow. He looks and sounds like a 25yr old wearing an 'older guy' costume.
My Unclr brought Bob Guido Resturant Tiki back in 1970. I said how come the Four Season does not know how tje Resturany. My uncle Richard Replied,They are musical😂
My parents heard this on the way to the hospital to have me in 62 and decided if I was a girl this would be my name. Thanks for not writing Deloras baby or something less attractive. Lol
Sherry Homenick that’s pretty neat!
@@MakeTheVid61 c
the original title was Waffles.
Do you still tour? We live in Santa Cruz, CA. The boardwalk has free Friday night concerts during the summer. I would walk down there to see you. I think a lot of people would come farther. Bring you back.
The guy is older now and has not toured in 40yrs he also worth a hundred million, I don't think he would play there so you can walk down and see him for free ? WTF
ELECTRONIC DOO WOP AT ITS FINEST!
Great song not a lot of story in the song, but it's showing off a brilliant voice so job done a lot of memorable melody in one word including falsetto She- E --ry
I once heard that the actual, original title was Terry.
Ok..now I know it's a great song but when I was younger I hated it...I took many clients to lunches at 1 restaurant...the owner could see me pull into lot & would play that song on his juke box everytime he saw me ( my name)..I finally had to tell him I would never come back if he played it again..now I just smile with the memory everytime I hear the song...
is he the same Bob Gaudio from Who Killed Teddy bear?
I heard that Terry was the original title.
The real person the wrote Sherry baby is name was Lindell Monde The song for the 1st time on American bandstand and he was told do not sing it to you copy write a song I grew up down the street from and it was sold to the 4 seasons and Frankie Valli
Do you have A N Y proof of this, If not I could say I wrote it !
I had heard it was actually called Terry
Interesting
... And who agreed to the bosom buddy singing stance of Bob close to Frankie? Poor Frankie...
Gaudio and Crewe were the noggins
I bet he wrote Sherry in 1973 . I really don't know the 4 seasons history intimately but it surly sounds 73ish and i WISH WITH EVERY FIBER OF MY BEING that i could muster up the TALENT to write just ONE let it be , Sherry , or even a hats off to Larry !!! Lol Lord just let me stumble onto just one " kodachrome " or " tiny dancer " I'm just not that talented !!! :( But to answer yur question I'm gonna say 73 ? Please let me kno when get time plz . Thx
edward hash "Sherry" was written and recorded in July of 1962.
anybody! what year did Gaudio write this song ? Sherry !
Carmen Gradin "Sherry" was written and recorded in July of 1962.
thanks !
Am I the only one on this planet that thinks it would be a genius idea to have these guys watch their movie? I'd love to see what they think about it
i think most have. i heard an interview with tommy devito and he says that they overplayed his owing the mob money. i don't think the mob would have let the debt get to 150 k. and i don't think the bookeeper for the band would have allowed tommy to take 500k out of their tax money. movies are always done for dramatic effect and not necessarilies for truthful effect.
The movie was a box office flop. Main reason is that NOBODY can sing falsetto like Valli and another reason is that the BASS was diminished in all the songs til the finale.
Eastwood was the wrong choice to direct. (Valli did NOT like the movie and said so)
They totally ruined the character playing Bob Crewe as he was NOT the "flaming gay"as the movie suggested. He was the genius producer of the 4 Seasons hits (R.I.P.)
Yep, that's why I refuse to watch the movie.
If you listen to the Original Broadway Soundtrack (produced by Mr. Gaudio HIMSELF) the person who played Frankie Vali actually did a stellar job imitating his falsetto. Also, the 2014 Touring Cast, which I went to go see last month, also did an excellent job as well. Hayden Milanes, who played Valli, did excellent. Obviously not as great as Valli himself, but darn close.
I do agree that both the Broadway Versions (Touring and actual Broadway Production) were amazing and surpassed the crappy movie by a longshot.
Ok i just wanna point out the John Lloyd Young did a BEAUTIFUL job as Valli! The movie was by far the best i have seen in years. Young is the original broadway Valli so to those saying the original was better, he is the original. i believe that Young actually sang it better than Valli in some aspects due to that falsetto. i am not in any way trying to start a fight here, just stating my own opinion. the movie also was not a flop, recording well over 40 million in sales.
Will Belles 40 million is definitely considered a flop!!
Will Belles For me the movie was a godsend. Why? Because no way can I afford to travel to any big city where Jersey Boys is performed on tour. I live in a backwater in the back of the beyond. So for me, any movie of a Broadway musical is a godsend. I grew up on Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. My music. John won the Tony for his portrayal of Frankie. People don't win Tonys if they lack talent. He is the closest to Frankie I've heard. John nailed it. I love the music and the story. Some folks don't have money the way others do and thus cannot afford to see a stage play of this caliber. $5.00 or $6.00 for a movie ticket (I go to matinees) is all this poor hick from the sticks can afford. I love the movie.
Man this guy looks really young and old at the same time I can some weird it's almost and you also kind of looks like Edward the vampire. LOL all shiny like and flicking with the diamonds and s*** LOL
It's wrong to make comparisons of any group especially if those groups were highly successful. it just simply means that Americans are (at least back then) diverse in thier taste. To many people today feel their genre or artist should always rule the roost. What would it be like if everything you heard was Micheal Jackson, or some other group..All the time! You would go nuts! I'm afraid that's whats happening in the music industry today! Its not about whos better but who appeals to who!
Unfortunately, the movie wasn't that great. I had hoped for better considering Clint Eastwood was directing.
what more could you have wanted in the movie?
agreed spacecaptain
I think the movie was great. Well directed, as you can expect from mr Eastwood. The story is fine, music idìs fine of course, the actors were convincing.
I was bored stiff. I wish I had brought some bourbon to pass the time.
So there is no real Sherry behind it? That´s a shame.
Why???
Hated the play Jersey Boys and hated the movie , no vibe at all , Jersey Boys sounds nothing like the real Four Seasons
Just Turn On The Beatles
The movie was lacking . . . let's face it; the writing was boring, the acting was not convincing and the guy playing Frankie did not have a big enough voice. Still, I was glad I saw it because I love the music.
It was good, but Frankie did not care for it.
How could you let Clint Eastwood ruin the Broadway play with such a shitty movie production? What a shame. What a waste of time and money. You'd still be at the August Wilson Theatre if not for Senior Dirty Harry. Mama Mia had far more common sense.
