My mom wrecked it a few months after she bought it, but got it fixed. She broke the driver's side mirror last year, and I replaced it. She's recently broke the passenger's side mirror, too, which still needs to be replaced. Yet after all that, it runs very well with 132k on it now. Other than the A/C compressor, it's been a very reliable beater--it has a smoother transmission than my '11 Accord, which just hit 100k! Gas mileage could be better, though (18 city / 22-24 highway). I had a friend that also had an '04 CR-V, but his had the 5-speed manual. Had at least 200k miles (or even 250k; it's been a few years), and it still ran beautifully.
I was brought home from the hospital in a 2000 crv as a baby. In 2 months, 15 years later, that same car is going to be mine. Edit: I’m now 22 and in college. The crv has about 270,000 miles.

A friend of mine had one of these over 20 years ago, 98 model. They felt very well built - every switch & button inside felt much more solid than in my 98 Corolla. Some months later, riding a bit weird. Took it to a mechanic, some suspension components worn out, need replacing. Then eventually, a weird noise constantly, & shifting was weird (automatic). Gearbox was on its way out. 🤦 She sold it. During all this, my little Corolla continued faultlessly.

I had a 2000 CR-V as my first car, which was still running at 255k miles when I sold it for my Miata NB. What an awesome little car, I'll never forget the first day I drove to school, without anybody in the car with me. I took it to my first job, and to my first college semester. It wasn't exciting to drive, but it was very dependable. It always started up and drove to where I needed to be. I'll always be fond of these things for being my first big taste of freedom.
I finally used the picnic table on a fishing trip with my son here in Colorado. I carried it about 100 yards out by the handle to a good spot. Was so much fun! 😁 Blue 98 CRV 5 Speed 240k, runs great!
I was in junior high / high school when these came out and I loved them! The 99 Kia Sportage has low range body on frame, the Honda was just damn good and the Rav-4 was all around cool.. hell even the Tracker was neat. I miss the days before these became the new minivans / so ubiquitous.
I have a 1999 Honda CR-V. It’s traveled all over the us. Bought on the east cost and now has it’s home in New Mexico. Believe it or not it is a 5 speed manual, awd with all original engine/ drivetrain and she has 459,000 miles on it. I have the valves adjusted every year and change oil religiously every 3k miles. You get out of a car what you put in, especially a Honda. What an amazing vehicle
Douglas Au I replace the belts pretty often although admittedly I do not know the exact Milage. I just look for cracks in the belts and if I see any sign of wear I change it. I install a gates timing belt every 90k and as for the valve adjustment I do it myself, but considering the valves aren’t crazy out of whack it shouldn’t realistically run you more than 100. But the worse the valves, more labor= more money. It just depends. Preventative maintenance is best.
That's not too bad at all! Damn, I wish I could learn how to adjust the valves myself. Sounds like a lot of precision work and tools. Sorry, I meant the timing belt. Every 90k sounds perfect. I'm thinking about getting a 1998 with 160,000 miles, but last timing belt was at 100,000 miles. Sounds like it is due for a service. Super clean, but the engine bay looks kinda dirty...you think that's a bad sign?
Dirty or Oily? Dirty , no problem, but if Oily, probably valve cover gasket, which isn't bad to change. You still have 45,000 miles before t b needs changing
I live in Manitoba, Canada and right now these things are so desirable. You can tell they are reliable because most will have easily over 300,000kms and still are worth over $3000. the manual transmission ones go for more. Unfortunately most have a lot of rust but somehow they still hold their value.
I guarantee you every single person who bought a CRV back when it was brand new back in 97 never took the picnic table out ever or mostly forgot about it
I did before I bought it. I've used it during road trips and hurricanes to hold my camp stove while the power was out. I even use it now as a stand for my parts and tools while I'm working on it.
A coworker bought one used around 2005. The original owner led him on a Doug DeMuro type tour of all it's quirks and features, never mentioned it. He had it for three more years before he figured out there was a table. I guess he read about it in the owner's manual, but figured it was an optional cover that went across level with the top of the seats. Sort of like a privacy cover in some station wagons and SUVs. It didn't occur to him it was built into the floor.
Still have my 1997 CRV and I even bought it used in 2001. Best car ever and it runs great! I love that huge open feel of the windshield...No plans to trade my baby in as long as I can keep him...probably for another 100 k miles! Honda. Rules.
my 97 crv finally passed over 100k miles last month and i am sure it will go many many more miles :) it is a great little suv that does all the things i need as a Daily driver, its good on gas, reliable and easy to haul things around. all i have done to it is install H&R springs on it to make it handle dramatically better while still keeping a good ride
Check your valves clearances on the engine, the valves lose clearance and smash into the valve seat, requiring a cyl. head change if not checked about every 30,000 miles.
I have a 1996 Japanese import rhd CRV. I use it to deliver the mail and this car/suv is worth it’s weight in gold. It’s great on gas, and has a lot of room. It’s by far the most comfortable mail vehicle I’ve ever owned. It even has a road flare that came standard with it lol. I will eventually use the picnic table in the back…..
I owned a shop that specialized in Hondas , and I would always ask if they knew about the table in these, at least 1/3 did not and were amazed when I showed them
+Mel Laknanurak Yeah ever since Bajabusta was terminated from RUclips, things haven't been the same. I'm glad they at least offer these retro reviews. I used to watch these all the time!
My friend has taken ownership of his parents old 98 RV and has been on countless long trips without ever missing a beat. I always refer the comfort of the ride not being a million miles off a classic Rolls Royce, especially for the total weight of the RV. She's on 210k i believe.
I had a 1997 CRV with the alloys and ABS package that my daughter liked to call the Go-Kart, considering it was much smaller than my other daily, a 2005 lifted Dodge Ram 4x4. I sold the CRV when I moved overseas, but I still miss that little thing, and seeing this video doesn't help that any. It's great to see so many 1st gen CRV's still on the road. I also learned today that CRV means "Comfortable Run-about Vehicle"...
Growing up, the two cars my family owned were this car and a '96 Dodge Caravan, both dark green. This car lasted the longest!!! In fact, we sold this car to my grandmother in I believe 2010, and she drove it past 310k miles two years ago, then sold it and bought a 2014 Outback. It's pretty cool to see an old review of this car. I completely forgot about it until I somehow came across this video.
My 97 crv has a blown head gasket, 260+ thousand miles on it and it has been a champ. My heart is literally breaking.. I don’t want to let it go. It made a Major milestone in my life possible. I know every single little detail of my car. I love it (aka, him).
Even though there are a few fallacies in this review it does give an accurate representation of the CRV of this vintage for those interested in buying one.
I picked up a 2000 RD2 about 5 months ago and fell in love with the versatility of these vehicles, I recently purchased another crv a 97 RD1 that im going to make my offroad/camping rig. these things are amazing and probably the top car ive owned so far.
these are still going strong. I'm having a hard time trying to find one. first car I owned was awesome, wish I took better care of it. and yes the table was awesome.
Just a short story: My GF's '95 CR-V which we bought together came without A/C, we could not find a car that did. But I did not leave it at that. I went to a scrapyard and pulled some parts from a totaled CR-V. Lines, evap, some wiring, relays, A/C control panel everything but the pump. Never done this before. Installed, pressure tested it, vacuumized the system and filled it up. It was a late sweaty summer evening and the moment the cool air came from the vents I knew it would be worth it in the long run. Still works good after 1.5 years. Go Honda. Next project is to install a cyl head from a GSR (b18c4) and make it a vtec.
212,044 miles on my 1998 with a five speed manual. Trans is crisp and sure. Engine purrs. I have done brakes once, timing belt (and water pump) at 122,000 , valve adjustment, replaced both the clutch and brake masters, replaced driver side wheel bearing assembly, and proper maintenance otherwise. That is danged good I think. These are fine automobiles. Why do companies cease building good vehicles? Oh, I use the table occasionally.
I'm 39 years old and live in Germany Berlin... I owned over 32 Honda Cars, actualy 8 Honda Cars (2x 98 integra Type R's 1x CRX EF8, 1xCivic ef7 , 1xcivic Coupe ej2 Turbo, 1x Acura TL UA6, 1x 94 Prelude vtev bb1 4WS) , one Honda Bike VfR 750 and a 125ccm Honda Scooter. And Last Week i bought one of These First Gen. 2000 CRV with 170.000 km and the b20z1 147HP Engine Manual. It's realy a Rock Solid Car and so practically. IT has so much space INSIDE, even on the Backseats. The legendary Picknick Table in the Trunk, armrest's , Mini Table between the Frontseats, Audio System, it's realy somthings Special to me. I Love Honda
I love this CRV. I was lucky to find a 2000 model 3 years ago with 34k miles and paid $10k. Mind you it's only the LX with no abs, but it's been an amazing buy, great on gas and great on the snow too.
One of best built vehicle. Our 1997 has only 188,000 miles so we have another 200,000 to go. Also incredible in snow, even tried to get stuck but couldn't.
My grandparents had a green 1995 CR-V. They pushed well over 200,000 miles on it, after having it for over 15 years. I'll always say the Honda makes cars that will literally last forever.
I have never owned a CRV of any vintage but I have to say that there are still a lot of the early versions on the road in 2018, more so than the RAV4 or anything made by the domestic brands. It’s quite impressive actually, makes me think the vehicle was over engineered (which is a good thing!)
I bought a 2001 GT AWD CR-V 3 years ago that had 180 000 km on it, only thing I had to do on it is regular maintenance (oil change), replaced the battery, exhaust and recently replaced the driver's side window regulator. I paid it cash, spent about 800$ in repairs in 3 years, I do my own repairs, so that saves money. But this is the most reliable car I ever owned and I've owned a couple new cars before. Except for the rusted rear fenders, The car has less rattles than any new or slightly used Dodge or Chrysler for sure. Almost anything on this thing can be fixed with just lubrication or cleaning. I had the brake light come on during winter, it's was only the float in the master cylinder sticking on, a little wiggle up and down, problem solved. I had problems with the passenger side door lock not always locking, removing the door panel, lubricated the motor and putting it back together, problem solved. You tube is your friend when it comes to fixing the CR-V but it's quite easy to fix compare to other newer cars if you are mechanically incline. With the harsh winters we have here in Quebec, I will try to keep and maintain this car for as long as I can. Next summer, I will get the rusted fenders fixed. The only splurge I made on the car was to install a Pionneer Carplay compatible radio headunit. I think even if the car is 17 years old, I still deserve a little ' modern technology' in my daily driver. This is by far my favorite car I have ever owned, My previous car was a new 2009 Suzuki SX4 5 speed AWD that I absolutely hated the whole 5 years I had it. I've owned a brand new Jeep YJ 1992, The CRV has the much better AWD system for daily use in the snow, You'll never get stuck anywhere or ever have to take out the shovel to get out of your parking spot. I wish I had bought this CRV brand new, I think it would have been the first and last new car I ever bought, if I had bought one brand new it would surely be in a better shape than the one I bought 3 years ago. But still, a testament to what the first gen CR-V were. This is how reliable most car should be. Not the exception.
in 2000 the crv added seats that convert into beds, basically you move the front seat all the way forward and tilt the back rest all the way back till its flat , on the rear seat you push the side lever that can be seen when you open the door on the side cushion, pull that till it tilts the seat up slightly and then pull on the knob to move the rear back rest as far back as it will go, and there ya go, you have a bed.
I have a 1999 EX. It was my parents car until they picked up a newer CRV. Its been great for all those Michigan winters. The only bad thing is all the years of salt corrosion has done a toll. Every peice I've had to replace was because of salt corrosion. Brake lines rusted, panels rusting, etc. I'm actually in the middle of changing out my radiator, which isn't so bad considering its been 18 years. Luckily replacement parts are cheap so long as you don't buy it from Clear Lake Honda. My driver side inside door handle did suddenly snap though. Honda of Clear Lake wanted $80 for it. Luckily you can find it online for about $5-$10 .
My Dad had the 2001 one, he had it for 16 years now, it's a year older than me! Now we're getting the 2017 one :'( farewell friend. But the new one looks awesome
Ten years ago, when I was looking to buy one, I couldn't decide between the CRV or Rav 4. My mechanic told me to go to the CRV. It was the best advice that I have ever had. I loved the car so much that I now have the gen 2 model, and I still use the old one for work.
@@vfspectrum4652 I drove an Element for 15 years, but never used that feature since it had a tail gate. Honda messed up by not updating the Element and letting it die off without a replacement.
@@rcsor3 wasn’t just the picnic table. A center console that dropped so more space can open up. And something that Honda stopped in newer offerings - in this first generation, you could take off the headrests in the front seats, recline all the way back & it would perfectly line up to the edge of the rear bench - forming a flat sleeping surface. This car was ahead of the van life movement.
This CR-V is a phenomenon in Thailand. While Honda was late in the American SUV market , they are first in the Thailand SUV market. Now CR-V is still the number one of the compact SUV segment in Thailand.
Oh what a total pain in the ass to get this thing to fix, long story short, bought a 67k miles barn find 98 CR-V all the rubber suspension bushing was rotted out, took me a few months and lots of time and swearing to get it back to running condition. It was well worth it though
My family used to have a 2001 CR-V SE with Realtime 4WD (actually AWD) up until July 2013. It was a great vehicle, since my mom drove it to work. Now we have the 2014 Forester Touring with EyeSight, which has a similar layout as the first-generation CR-V on the dash, except the shifter and the brand new gadgets.
Realtime 4WD is not AWD at all. It is front WD normally to conserve gas, and only if front drive wheel slips power is sent to opposite side rear wheel. So at the most only 2 wheels get power.
I still own my 1997 CR-V! 200,000+ miles and 22 years old, still going strong. I'm keeping it until it falls apart. It has been inexpensive to maintain and service, it seldom breaks down, and is the most intuitive vehicle I've ever owned. Things are where they should be and work like you think they will. I recently bought a Subaru Forester and it's no Honda. I couldn't find another gen 1 to buy or I would have.
22 yrs ago bought a new 97 1st gen blue CR-V LX real time awd, visited several national parks, great memories with it, all this time used builtin-table only once, got 210k miles when we split in 2008, still running very good, well, divorce have to give it to her, ha ha ha.

These look better than the new ones.
Agree...now the new ones are fatter than Jabba the Hutt.
This is a much smaller car. The new ones are a foot wider and a bit taller. Modern compact cars are a foot wider than the 97 crv.
The new ones are smaller looking. They are uglier and I will not get a newer one. I hate to say goodbye to my 97.
Totally agree!

it is a great little suv that does all the things i need as a Daily driver, its good on gas, reliable and easy to haul things around. all i have done to it is install H&R springs on it to make it handle dramatically better while still keeping a good ride
That car just started to live lol
Check your valves clearances on the engine, the valves lose clearance and smash into the valve seat, requiring a cyl. head change if not checked about every 30,000 miles.
Two lamb capacity. That's enough.
God. It saddens me a lot that this is considered "retro".
you better get over it lol we're all getting older
+chad harmon Just let me mourn a little longer. Please?
What's next a 2000 Hyundai Elantra? Wow, real vintage collector's item. Lol
It isn't. The NC was featured recently. "Retro" just means "Relativley Old"
How many 2000 Elantra's do you see on the road still?
It's amazing how many of these things I still see running around all over the place.
Yep, because they run forever. 👍
Remember when you could distinguish car brands/models based off of what they look like? What the hell happened?
I have a 1996 Japanese import rhd CRV.
I use it to deliver the mail and this car/suv is worth it’s weight in gold. It’s great on gas, and has a lot of room. It’s by far the most comfortable mail vehicle I’ve ever owned.
It even has a road flare that came standard with it lol. I will eventually use the picnic table in the back…..
I owned a shop that specialized in Hondas , and I would always ask if they knew about the table in these, at least 1/3 did not and were amazed when I showed them
that picnic table really surprises me! love that retro honda look
Finally, I've been waiting for this review on RUclips for years.
+Mel Laknanurak Yeah ever since Bajabusta was terminated from RUclips, things haven't been the same. I'm glad they at least offer these retro reviews. I used to watch these all the time!
I wonder why they did that to BajaBusta...Mann that sucked.
My friend has taken ownership of his parents old 98 RV and has been on countless long trips without ever missing a beat. I always refer the comfort of the ride not being a million miles off a classic Rolls Royce, especially for the total weight of the RV. She's on 210k i believe.
I couldn't get your point about the ride comfort of CRV!
Is it great like RR or is it very far from it???
I had a 1997 CRV with the alloys and ABS package that my daughter liked to call the Go-Kart, considering it was much smaller than my other daily, a 2005 lifted Dodge Ram 4x4. I sold the CRV when I moved overseas, but I still miss that little thing, and seeing this video doesn't help that any. It's great to see so many 1st gen CRV's still on the road. I also learned today that CRV means "Comfortable Run-about Vehicle"...
they changed the meaning to "compact recreational vehicle"i think it had something to do with competing with the RAV 4
Got my 98 CRV new with 6 miles on the odometer. Have now passed 231,000 miles and still going strong.
Just picked up a 5 speed awd 98' for 1400$ great little car and runs like a top despite having 210,000 miles on it
I always loved the Honda CRV but i love the Honda Element based on the CRV just as much
yes very utilitarian
3:43..........Al Jarreau, Morning..........GREATEST SONG EVER!!!!!!
+landyachtfan79
I caught that. LOL
Lambs did too
+landyachtfan79 Exactly! It's my favorite part of the video!!
That song simply makes you love life & everyone in it!!!!!
***** Thanks! I remember listening to this song for the very first time riding my mother's 1995 Ford Escort LX 3-Door Coupe when I was a baby!
I love this CRV. I was lucky to find a 2000 model 3 years ago with 34k miles and paid $10k. Mind you it's only the LX with no abs, but it's been an amazing buy, great on gas and great on the snow too.
What kind of tires do you use ? I'm in the market for my 01 crv for tires
C Bernar my mom got some sort of cooper tires meant for about 80k and said they were the best tires she ever had
I have one ,22 yrs old and still going! Love it !
"It does include these 15 inch alloy wheels *shows footage of a JDM CR-V with plastic wheelcovers on steel wheels*
The 1997-2001 & 2002-2006 CR-V are the best with picnic tables
One of best built vehicle. Our 1997 has only 188,000 miles so we have another 200,000 to go. Also incredible in snow, even tried to get stuck but couldn't.
ANDREW SMITH I only got 140,000 in my 97 crv, she’s a keeper.
introduced 23 years ago and i still see them on the road all the time, you can’t say that about a lot of cars
Those don't look like alloy wheels... More like steel wheels and plastic wheel covers.
That's because they are, that's how their RHD Japanese spec tester came
I have two, I drive the 1999 5 sp Manual, and my son drives the 2000 automatic. I wish they had more power, but love them.
Put a VTEC head on from an Acura GSR/Type r or 99-2000 Civic SI. Ps. Look up Gene kim n Chuck missler on RUclips
@@a3dstorm Thank you! If I see a CR-V in Quebec, I'll always think it's maybe yours haha
I like the purple crv
been driving a 2000 euro spec 150 hp B20Z model for 5 years, still a fun and versatile vehicle to drive :)
My grandma still has her 98 n its now 2019
Wow
i just found out what cr-v stands for.
in 2000 the crv added seats that convert into beds, basically you move the front seat all the way forward and tilt the back rest all the way back till its flat , on the rear seat you push the side lever that can be seen when you open the door on the side cushion, pull that till it tilts the seat up slightly and then pull on the knob to move the rear back rest as far back as it will go, and there ya go, you have a bed.
Luckily you can find it online for about $5-$10 .
just ran out to check mine. dont have the extra cup holders in Australia
My Dad had the 2001 one, he had it for 16 years now, it's a year older than me! Now we're getting the 2017 one :'( farewell friend. But the new one looks awesome
Looking out the window to my 99 crv urban lander. Thank you Honda. You sure do know how to make em.
Always wanted a CRV since I'm in kindergarten
Ten years ago, when I was looking to buy one, I couldn't decide between the CRV or Rav 4. My mechanic told me to go to the CRV. It was the best advice that I have ever had. I loved the car so much that I now have the gen 2 model, and I still use the old one for work.
My first car is a 2nd gen 05 CR-V and has 139K miles currently. I love it, and I want a review for the 2nd gen now...
New CR-V has electronic safety gadgets out the wazoo, but the first gen has more useful features!
You mean useful like a picnic table?
yeah they should bring back the picnic table
How I wish Honda will bring back the picnic table on future CR-V's. It's the most distinctive feature of this little SUV.
You can also get a 12volt shower in the back for washing up at the beach.
Oh what a total pain in the ass to get this thing to fix, long story short, bought a 67k miles barn find 98 CR-V all the rubber suspension bushing was rotted out, took me a few months and lots of time and swearing to get it back to running condition. It was well worth it though
Barn find CRV?...Really? Watch out, better call Wayne Carini. Lmao
2:44 there was a five speed manual transmission on these first gen CR-Vs, they were probably not sold in the U.S, and they're pretty hard to find.
they were sold in the states, but they are a bit more hard to come by
One of the best crv ever built🙏🙏
My family used to have a 2001 CR-V SE with Realtime 4WD (actually AWD) up until July 2013. It was a great vehicle, since my mom drove it to work. Now we have the 2014 Forester Touring with EyeSight, which has a similar layout as the first-generation CR-V on the dash, except the shifter and the brand new gadgets.
Realtime 4WD is not AWD at all. It is front WD normally to conserve gas, and only if front drive wheel slips power is sent to opposite side rear wheel. So at the most only 2 wheels get power.
The new ones seem bigger but I feel like they're the same size inside. Seems like they just added more size on the outside for no reason
The "Shirley Valentine" vibes of that picnic for one, though. LOL
Wait there’s more cup holders on the center console??? Do all crvs have them or only certain ones
My son drives the CR-V now. I drive the Subaru.
@@joubess how's that crv going!
My dad had a 2001 SE and it was great except for the leather that stuck to your legs when it was hot
I have a 2009 CRV. No problems with 85k miles right now. These little cars run forever.
Best old SUV out there. I’m sure i’ll have my 01 for years to come. Only got 100k right now.
They found the table!
My buddy in high school and I both had CRVs, I remember the day he showed me my table. My mind was blown, what an odd feature...
I like these, they seem like good comfortable and practical rigs
Mine is at 229,000 and going strong. Hopefully it lasts for another few years!
Yay 90's! *Two thumbs up*
Not one of the Hondas videos I requested, but thanks. Still waiting for the 2003 Pilot video
Looks way better than the modern CR-V.
the 2017 one looks pretty cool
22 yrs ago bought a new 97 1st gen blue CR-V LX real time awd, visited several national parks, great memories with it, all this time used builtin-table only once, got 210k miles when we split in 2008, still running very good, well, divorce have to give it to her, ha ha ha.
The first gen CRV is legendary, especially with a manual transmission.
Mmmm Prelude!! As an owner of a 2001 Prelude, I think this video is great:) haha Just waiting to see the official upload of the 97 and up prelude throwback. (Yes I know there is a bootleg version out there)
+Acc0rd79 ^^^ RUclips Star
lightningsmokerXx with fans like yourself:)
They recently posted that '97-'01 Prelude video, just in case you hadn't seen.
It's still funny to me that Honda introduced the CR-V as a completely new idea, after so many years of tall Civic wagon.
21 yrs & 244k miles later👍
turned my crv into a JEEP removable doors, lift kit, big tires, lots of off roading.
My mom had this car and I liked it a lot!! A lady hit my mom on the driver door and it was considered totaled.
I had a 98 EX bought new, loved it ... It was underpowered though
yeah a lot of people install turbo kits or do engine swaps on these
That Prelude is beautiful!
У меня почти такая же. 98 года, год назад взял. Не нарадуюсь.
