Nice. I couldn't get the controller to update until I powered it up. The instructions that come in the update files don't say to power it up - in fact they say to leave it off. But in the end it worked so thanks! I have an original Zino - in black. I like it.

And as we have discussed many times Hubsan doesn't have the most user friendly updating system in place. Martin Kohajda I made the mini plug using a spare micro JST 1.25mm connector 😊 if you don’t have a plug or don’t want to buy the connector you can also use tin foil to bridge the pins
@@martinkohajda You have to keep the button held down the entire time during the HTB TX update, and to connect I believe. :( it's actually more of a hassle, unless they fixed it so that you don't have to hold the button for so long.

I've just received my white zino a couple of days ago and it came with the newest firmware for everything apart from the Camera firmware, which i found a bit add, I've read some bad reviews about the 3.8 version so I'll stick to 3.6 for now. Great instructional video...I upgraded all the way using IT 3.8 and thank goodness you had the old version posted here! I will now go and downgrade just my IT files to the 3.6 version.

When I try and download and open the firmware update, I get the following message: There is no application set to open the document “Zino_V1.2.05.hbs”. Thank you John. I'm 70yrs and it took me about 1 month but I've upgraded to latest software. Unfortunately it still insists BATTERY LOW. soon after take off. This is with a fully charged brand new battery which I bought as the other two Zino batteries were giving the same message!! In this condition I'm challenged by it forcing down to home. CAUTION: Nov 11, 2019. I took my Hubsan Zino out today since was bright and sunny with no wind. I started it up and attempted to connected to my phone like I have 100 times in the past, and it asked me to Login, so I did, then it started down loading an update. After finished I restarted the drone, the controller and the program and took off, but then it said, USB disconnected at about 10 feet off the ground and it did an auto return to home. I thought that was weird since it is set to go up 98 ft on a return to home. So I turned it off and restarted everything again. Seemed to be working fine, but then "lost USB connection"again when drone was about 100 yds out and 50 ft high. It started an automatic return to home at only 50 feet high! I tried to take it off return to home, but it would not let me. It is now stuck 50 feet up in the top of a big old Pine tree. I have no idea how of if I will be able to recover it!

Absolutely, and thank you! As a general rule I like to recalibrate everything after a major firmware update unless I know for a fact that the previous calibration data is ported over during the flash of new firmware.
@@Bobcouto2 To be fair I can see how that would happen... inexperienced users who don't know to think like that are buying this as their first camera bird. The update process is a mess. I've never seen a worse firmware upgrade process and I've had experience with all sorts of drones. I should have said something about just recalibrating everything in the video for good measure but I forgot to mention it. I'll put it in the desc. Thanks for the feedback!
Ah, I was upgrading mine but you are downgrading, that is the difference. No worries. It is possible to easily downgrade, but you have to mix two files together from the old and new version in order for the Zino to accept it. Here is how. From the _0.3.6 folder, copy the AmbaSysFW.bin_ to the MicroSD card. Then, _from the 0.3.8 folder copy Asd_md5.bin_ to the card. Is that clear?
I was getting false battery warning with Zino_FC_V1.2.05 so I installed Zino_FC_V1.1.52. Zino_FC_V1.1.52 doesn't read the battery voltage correctly and the drone dropped without warning. Thank goodness It wasn't that high off the ground and it fell on some bushes. I'll probably try one of the last FC updates and see if they work any better.
I had a problem with mine. After I flashed the firmware updates (drone, gimbal, camera and transmitter), when I started my app up, I'm now getting a "The gimbal angle sensor is abnormal" on the app and the gimbal will not move (I do get the camera image).
Hello john cuppi. I have updated my zino to the latest fc but on the app when I try to do a hyperlapse it says update to the latest flight control but it was the latest flight control. How do I fix this? Some other videos have already shown the hyperlapse footage so It's already been implemented
Hi ! I have a problem with updating the camera. Because when I copy two files to a memory card and later insert it into the drone, the installation does not start. is as it was or the LED flashes 2 seconds red and disappears briefly. do you know the reason?
Great video!! I am pulling the last of my hair out I can't get the drone to connect to the laptop, the drone is going blue for power but it is not making the connection sound and will not show as connected in the upgrade tool. I have searched online and no one else seems to have ever had this issue but I can't seem to get any response from Hubsan themselves only thing I can think of is trying to return it to amazon as faulty. Any advice would be much appreciated.
The cable you’re using may be faulty. It would seem like it is getting power from USB but no data link. Do you know that the cable you’re using works for data from any other device that you could test?
Quick question : in my case i lost wifi connection and try to downgrade FC but it seems that the drone cannot read the files on the sd card , any suggestion?
Super helpful video John! I'll be watching this when I get my Zino. Seems like such a sloppy method to upgrade but this is a hobbyist drone and it is Hubsan not DJI so this is to be expected. Can I just a motherboard jumper to bridge the pins?
Good question, a mobo jumper is probably too big. The pins have very little distance between each other, that's why the small 1.25mm connector fits so well. I couldn't even use a jst-ph 2.0 connector, it was too big.
Great video. You explain all the steps well.. that is unusual. I updated the controller firmware but it still won't connect to either of my android phones. Any tips or thoughts would be welcome!
Thanks David. That's concerning that it won't connect to any of the android phones. One of my friends had a similar situation and it turned out to be a faulty cable. The only thing I can think of to try is to get a different cable if there's really zero response from the phone at all when it's plugged into the controller.

Hubsan has no intention of making an app for the Zino v1. I think this is all we’re getting. If you want app updates you’ll need a Zino Pro or Zino 2. Thanks!

Thank you and yes unfortunately it does and it needs to be held down the whole time during the update which is a pain. :( I recommend using something to keep it held down.
I've problem with my gimbal update, in the 50 first pourcents, it stop and I've an "GB ACK checksum error". In the app, it's write "Anormal0x2A00" I've an image but no motors An idea?
Did you buy the Black Zino or the White One? If you bought the black one, then there's a good possibility it already has the firmware update from 07/09/2019 on it, or possibly the previous one from 06/21/2019. Gonna depend on when they were made. Yes, it's quite a mess of applications, drivers, and randomly named firmware binary files but we're FPV guys. We can do it. Lol.
exFAT didn't work when I tried it, and in the FAQ section of the user manual Hubsan seems to indicate that the software upgrade process does not support SD cards formated in exFAT. Good to hear it worked for you though.
Hi, I am having issues upgrading fc file. Either file is corrupt or not right because it says wrong file, i was able to upgrade gimbal file. Is there any way to get fc file?
One question, I saw that there are two types of hubsan zino control model HT016 and HT016B. Do you know how to upgrade HT016? He doesn't have the 6 pins
Jumping was the only method, hubsan provided no other way. With hubsan I would expect zero warranty at all for anything anyway. Their customer service basically doesn't exist.

vijay deejay take 1very small piece of tin foil, and put it between the last two pins to “connect” them together! Hope that helps. You can’t short anything out by trying this, the worst case is that it doesn’t get a good connection and simply won’t work - keep trying to get them connected if this happens, eventually, it will work.
4:20 I do exactly the same and everytime I get an "RX timeout 1" when I try to install the Gimbal Just one time itvreached 36% and stucked.. so I had to disconnect.. hope that not resulted a brick 😢 can anyone help me please..? My drone is on and connected just like in the video
Filikes Kouventes I had same thing happened I had to borrow a friend’s laptop that was running windows 7 for some reason windows 10 don’t like it hope this helps
Try a different cable if you can - one that is known to be good for data transfer and receive, it sounds like that cable may not be a data cable and is just a charge cable.
@@JohnCuppi I had it installed for a while then out of nowhere it said uninstall virus detected. I just downloaded it on my backup phone an I'll just see how it goes, thanks John 👍🏾😎👍🏾
It depends on what version you come from. If you're coming from a very outdated zino (like, first release firmware) then it will change a lot. In fact it's critical that you update if it's extremely old as there were so many stability fixes. There is an even newer zino FC firmware out now which has some sort of detection to determine if your batteries are bad or not. Personally I have passed on that update... I charge my batteries with a hobby grade charger, so I know how to check their health on my own and I don't think it's very bullet proof anyway.
Well; my goal was not compete with QC guy in any way. My channel reviews lots of different drones. If I do anything in RC I think is worth making a video on; I’ll do it even if others exist on the subject. I like to document my personal experience and add my own thoughts.
John Cuppi I wasn’t saying you were competing. He’s just the ZINO God is all. I complimented you but just said he does it best. He does all ZINO better than anyone and can actually troubleshoot and fix everything. Tell me...what do I do if my wifi is dead after a update and I can’t bind? Can you help me with that?
Jason Stern Yes, he has more Zino videos and content than anyone for sure. Almost anything you could want to know about the Zino he covers it. Sorry, I was a little confused about your comment though and took it differently. I do appreciate the compliment. And, no, that’s not an issue I have ever faced. So I have no clue about resolving that one. It’s funny you mentioned the Wi-Fi module though. I’ve had no problems with my Zino thus far but in an unrelated thing, am looking at doing the ventilation mod. Just to be on the safe side and keep that module from overheating from anything really.
John Cuppi You can lose wifi if you do the camera update wrong which won’t let you bind everything. I learned this the hard way and QC got me out of it and back in the air. I don’t think it does anything to the wifi module but then again I couldn’t tell you what the wifi module is either. I just know the camera firmware and camera plugs can kill it.
Jason Stern Thanks I’ll be careful with the camera fw. That was a major reason I made sure everything is charged and all the cables and cards were solid; I knew that it was possible to “brick” some of these components. I fly FPV racing/freestyle drones and the firmware flashing and setup on those is a lot more cleaner and safer than this update maze from Hubsan! As far as the module overheating you can check QC’s newest video about opening the Zino up and cutting away some of the shielding to allow it to ventilate. Apparently in hot conditions it can overheat and burn itself out!
@@GilbertoBP That should not be happening,as I know others running that firmware and they are not having an issue. Your batteries could be bad. The newer FC also does some kind of battery check to see if it's good -- it didn't say anything about your batteries being bad? Yeah - some commenters here also had the same thing. Later batches switched to a really difficult to hold push button that needs to be held down for the entire time of the update. I don’t have any good suggestions other than getting a friend to try to help with that one while you fiddle with the PC.
@@JohnCuppi Got it done in the end, using the screwdriver they supply that has a nice rubber cover on the tip! Man, they didn't want to make firmware update easy did they... I just assumed it would all happen automatically... By the way, how do you change the camera resolution? Its greyed out on my menu. Can you only do it when the camera is recording?
It’s been a long time since I have updated my zino v1. It is still flying well but you might want to ask some Zino owner groups. I believe they are not updating the Zino v1 firmware anymore anyway.
Try recalibrating everything or flashing the firmware again. Mine and others have been very stable. Make sure that all the latest firmware has been installed too. :)

So all aspect of Zino v1 upgrade packages are recommendable, but not Camera firmware, where 0.3.8 is persona non grata hence massive footage degradation and pulsing and a bitrrate that otherwise was in the high 50s Mbps and now been tumbled down in the 40s Mbps . One gotta wonder why Hubsan do this crap and keeping a new camera firmware that are obviously making the product look way worse then it can. Hopefully, it ain't a tool to make their newer drones like Pro & Zino 2.. stand out more clearly.
I don’t blame you at all for passing up on this one due to the process. The Zino is one of the most affordable 4K camera drones on the market but the reason(s) why clearly show. Hubsan obviously could not afford a software engineer or programmer to write an actual app that handles all of this. For those who don’t mind to tinker in this hobby and won’t update often (like me) the Zino is still an incredible value.
@@JohnCuppi I agree, this is a sweet drone for the money. My phantom 2 and 3 series had similar update methods and I hated that also. Now I am spoiled with the P4P V2 and the Mavic 2 Pro. If Hubsan would improve the update method I would love this drone as a backup.
I think this is where they cheaped out on this model. Because for me the zino was alright for its price at the time but the firmware update process is so complicated as you can see. Luckily you don't have to do it that often.

John Cuppi there seems to be a lot of operator error, possibly because they do not recalibrate everything after updates.

Thanks David. That's concerning that it won't connect to any of the android phones. One of my friends had a similar situation and it turned out to be a faulty cable. The only thing I can think of to try is to get a different cable if there's really zero response from the phone at all when it's plugged into the controller.
I had the same problem with my iPhone. When I reset my iPhone, that problem vanished.

In my box I recieved: a usb-c cable, an iphone cable, and a micro-usb cable. 3 different cables, so android ones should be one of those two :)

Hubsan has no intention of making an app for the Zino v1. I think this is all we’re getting. If you want app updates you’ll need a Zino Pro or Zino 2. Thanks!

Thank you and yes unfortunately it does and it needs to be held down the whole time during the update which is a pain. :( I recommend using something to keep it held down.
A car key works. Or a small pencil. Let the cradle keep it pressed against the switch.
I've problem with my gimbal update, in the 50 first pourcents, it stop and I've an "GB ACK checksum error". In the app, it's write "Anormal0x2A00"

Did you buy the Black Zino or the White One? If you bought the black one, then there's a good possibility it already has the firmware update from 07/09/2019 on it, or possibly the previous one from 06/21/2019. Gonna depend on when they were made. Yes, it's quite a mess of applications, drivers, and randomly named firmware binary files but we're FPV guys. We can do it. Lol.

I formated with exFAT and updated the camera, No problem at All :)
exFAT didn't work when I tried it, and in the FAQ section of the user manual Hubsan seems to indicate that the software upgrade process does not support SD cards formated in exFAT. Good to hear it worked for you though.
Hi, I am having issues upgrading fc file. Either file is corrupt or not right because it says wrong file, i was able to upgrade gimbal file. Is there any way to get fc file?
One question, I saw that there are two types of hubsan zino control model HT016 and HT016B. Do you know how to upgrade HT016? He doesn't have the 6 pins
If he has the button style one then the button must be held down the entire time to do the upgrade process.

Jumping was the only method, hubsan provided no other way. With hubsan I would expect zero warranty at all for anything anyway. Their customer service basically doesn't exist.

The little connector head is called a jst 1.25mm connector. Remember you could also try tin foil to bridge the connector pins too.

Ricardo David yep you can - carefully use a small piece of foil to bridge them. It’s a huge pain in the ass though, but it does work!

vijay deejay take 1very small piece of tin foil, and put it between the last two pins to “connect” them together! Hope that helps. You can’t short anything out by trying this, the worst case is that it doesn’t get a good connection and simply won’t work - keep trying to get them connected if this happens, eventually, it will work.
Does the firmware updates have a MAC ios version for Zino PRO?
The Zino Pro supports Android and iOS phone app based updates. I don’t think there is any Mac OS update process at all for the Zino series.

Try a different cable if you can - one that is known to be good for data transfer and receive, it sounds like that cable may not be a data cable and is just a charge cable.
John did you have a problem with the Zino app because my phone scanned the app an said to uninstall because it has a virus
No problems with the app. I think that the virus scanner on your phone is probably false and doesn't understand the zino app isn't a virus.

If your firmware version is very outdated, yes. There were a lot of fixes.

What does FC V1.1.52 upgrade change?
It depends on what version you come from. If you're coming from a very outdated zino (like, first release firmware) then it will change a lot. In fact it's critical that you update if it's extremely old as there were so many stability fixes. There is an even newer zino FC firmware out now which has some sort of detection to determine if your batteries are bad or not. Personally I have passed on that update... I charge my batteries with a hobby grade charger, so I know how to check their health on my own and I don't think it's very bullet proof anyway.
QC Guy does this best and covers everything ZINO. Good job and effort though.
Well; my goal was not compete with QC guy in any way. My channel reviews lots of different drones. If I do anything in RC I think is worth making a video on; I’ll do it even if others exist on the subject. I like to document my personal experience and add my own thoughts.

Jason Stern Yes, he has more Zino videos and content than anyone for sure. Almost anything you could want to know about the Zino he covers it. Sorry, I was a little confused about your comment though and took it differently. I do appreciate the compliment. And, no, that’s not an issue I have ever faced. So I have no clue about resolving that one. It’s funny you mentioned the Wi-Fi module though. I’ve had no problems with my Zino thus far but in an unrelated thing, am looking at doing the ventilation mod. Just to be on the safe side and keep that module from overheating from anything really.
John Cuppi You can lose wifi if you do the camera update wrong which won’t let you bind everything. I learned this the hard way and QC got me out of it and back in the air.
I don’t think it does anything to the wifi module but then again I couldn’t tell you what the wifi module is either. I just know the camera firmware and camera plugs can kill it.
Jason Stern Thanks I’ll be careful with the camera fw. That was a major reason I made sure everything is charged and all the cables and cards were solid; I knew that it was possible to “brick” some of these components. I fly FPV racing/freestyle drones and the firmware flashing and setup on those is a lot more cleaner and safer than this update maze from Hubsan! As far as the module overheating you can check QC’s newest video about opening the Zino up and cutting away some of the shielding to allow it to ventilate. Apparently in hot conditions it can overheat and burn itself out!

@@GilbertoBP That should not be happening,as I know others running that firmware and they are not having an issue. Your batteries could be bad. The newer FC also does some kind of battery check to see if it's good -- it didn't say anything about your batteries being bad? No jumper pins on my controller. just an impossible to hold push button!
Yeah - some commenters here also had the same thing. Later batches switched to a really difficult to hold push button that needs to be held down for the entire time of the update. I don’t have any good suggestions other than getting a friend to try to help with that one while you fiddle with the PC.

Man, they didn't want to make firmware update easy did they... I just assumed it would all happen automatically...
By the way, how do you change the camera resolution? Its greyed out on my menu. Can you only do it when the camera is recording?

It’s been a long time since I have updated my zino v1. It is still flying well but you might want to ask some Zino owner groups. I believe they are not updating the Zino v1 firmware anymore anyway.

My hubsan zino after update ...not stabil
Try recalibrating everything or flashing the firmware again. Mine and others have been very stable. Make sure that all the latest firmware has been installed too. :)

So all aspect of Zino v1 upgrade packages are recommendable, but not Camera firmware, where 0.3.8 is persona non grata hence massive footage degradation and pulsing and a bitrrate that otherwise was in the high 50s Mbps and now been tumbled down in the 40s Mbps .
One gotta wonder why Hubsan do this crap and keeping a new camera firmware that are obviously making the product look way worse then it can.
Hopefully, it ain't a tool to make their newer drones like Pro & Zino 2.. stand out more clearly.

The updating process for this cool little drone is a PITA. Old school, no thanks.
I don’t blame you at all for passing up on this one due to the process. The Zino is one of the most affordable 4K camera drones on the market but the reason(s) why clearly show. Hubsan obviously could not afford a software engineer or programmer to write an actual app that handles all of this. For those who don’t mind to tinker in this hobby and won’t update often (like me) the Zino is still an incredible value.
@@JohnCuppi I agree, this is a sweet drone for the money. My phantom 2 and 3 series had similar update methods and I hated that also. Now I am spoiled with the P4P V2 and the Mavic 2 Pro. If Hubsan would improve the update method I would love this drone as a backup.

I think this is where they cheaped out on this model. Because for me the zino was alright for its price at the time but the firmware update process is so complicated as you can see. Luckily you don't have to do it that often.
