  • Welcome to Teach From Home! I'm Beth and this video is all about homeschooling for beginners, specifically discussing the Illinois homeschool laws.
    Visit hslda.org, click on "legal" at the top of the home page, then click on your state. It will take you to a page that tells you exactly what the laws are that you need to abide by in your state.
    For example, in Illinois, your homeschool will be considered a private school and you will be able to operate completely independently.
    In addition to this information, they also indicate a few guidelines that Illinoian homeschoolers need to follow, like teach all of the regular subjects, making sure the teaching is in English, and that the compulsory age for school is 6-17.
    If you have previously had your kids in public school and want to pull them out, you will need to notify the school. If you've never registered your kids in the school district, you do not have to notify anyone you are choosing to homeschool.
    If you live in a different state, hslda.org has this information for every state. You can also look up a few different international places.

    New Subscriber! I live in Illinois also and my daughter is going into first grade. Last year the Catholic school she attended offered e-learning all year so it was nice. This year they expect her to wear a mask all day in school and I am against that. I am going to be homeschooling her this year. So glad I came across your channel.

      We took our kids out of activities because of the masks. And then when they reopened, they wanted shots also. They haven't been in anything since.
      Now, they're asking to do things. So I have to check policies

    Hi, I'm going to start homeschooling my 5th grader here in Chicago IL this week. I filled out the form on the isbe website and notified the school. Should I do anything else? Do you keep those forms in a file?

      Hi Michelle! Congrats on homeschooling! You can keep the forms on file if you want to, but you don’t need to do anything else after you let the school know you are homeschooling.

    Hi, Question, I have my Children in private Catholic School, Do the same Rules Apply as for Public Schools in Illinois

    • @BethPavlik
      @BethPavlik  3 года назад

      Hi! Private schools have their own sets of rules. I’m not sure which rules you’re asking about exactly, but if you choose to keep them at home after having them in private school, you do not need to let them know you aren’t coming back.

    My daughter is currently attending 2nd grade in a private school. Do I do a letter of intent to homeschool for a private school? It seems it’s just for public, but I can’t find a straight answer anywhere with a google search

    • @BethPavlik
      @BethPavlik  Год назад

      I would assume with a private school, you just don’t re-enroll her next year. You shouldn’t owe them any explanation. However, I’m not 100% sure about that so I would suggest emailing support at hslda.org to make sure.

    My child was in private school in Kindergarten year, but they still report to the state. Then at the end of the year with the covid the school closed so we’ve been homeschooling since. So I never registered her in private or public school for first grade , only done the private school Kindergarten year. And in that private school the highest grade was Kindergarten. So do u think I still have to report to anyone that we now homeschooling? I was a member of HSLDA but they never returned my messages so I decided this year around to stop being a member, if there is not even elementary help.

    • @BethPavlik
      @BethPavlik  3 года назад +1

      That is a great question. My educated guess would be that you wouldn’t have to tell anyone if she was never in the public school system. However, I’m not 100% sure so don’t just take my word for it. If someone from the school district does end up contacting you somehow, you can tell them you have decided to continue with private school, which is what homeschooling is categorized as legally. Welcome to homeschooling!

    • @BethPavlik
      @BethPavlik  2 года назад

      Hi! If you are wanting to enroll him back in public school, you would just need to contact the school and let them know you need to register your son for 4th grade. They’ll let you know what to do from there.

    I will be homeschooling my 5yr this year. I'm also in Illinois. He has never been in a public school before. My question is that although I can start homeschooling him without notifying anyone one, am I supposed to check in with some periodically? Is there someone I'm supposed to contact? I'm confused on that part. How do I know come next year to pass him to first grade? What do you do?

    • @BethPavlik
      @BethPavlik  2 года назад +1

      No, you do not need to notify anyone or check in with anyone. How do you pass him to first grade? You make slow and steady progress with him this year and then next year he’ll be in first grade. 😊 If you’d like to go into detail and ask more specific questions, I would love for you to schedule an appointment with me. You can schedule it here: app.squarespacescheduling.com/schedule.php?owner=23596331&appointmentType=24904899 I am very happy to help you get started.

    Is it possible for my 17 year old to homeschool by herself ?

    • @BethPavlik
      @BethPavlik  2 года назад

      She can absolutely be responsible for her own learning as long as you’ve sat down with her and decided what she will need to accomplish. As the homeschooling parent, you still have to provide resources and opportunities for her to complete what she needs to complete to meet the requirements laid out by your state. Also if she is planning on going to college you will need to find out what their requirements are for acceptance and have her work to complete those as well. But yes, at 17, she should be able to handle all of the work by herself.

    I have an autistic daughter and she has had a ton of issues with public school. She has an IEP but has a hard time and misses alot of school due to health issues. I am considering home schooling. Do the children have the same opportunities as far as college after being home schooled? What type of diploma will they have after graduation and will colleges and employers take it seriously? I am also in Illinois and any information you can provide is greatly appreciated.

    • @BethPavlik
      @BethPavlik  Год назад

      Hi Randy. Yes, homeschoolers have the same opportunities as public school kids. They can go to college, earn all of the credits they need, and their parents give them a diploma. A lot of colleges and universities actively seek out homeschoolers because they know they are more self-driven and chose to go to college with a clear vision of what they want to do instead of kids going to college with no clear direction. Future employers definitely take homeschoolers seriously because they have been able to pursue things that they are interested in and have earned deeper understanding of topics because they chose to study them on their own, rather than public schooled kids who may not have internalized hardly anything from their classes because they didn’t care about it. I hope that helps.
