These songs are 4 Slovakian Folksongs Sz. 35b, BB 46 (incorrectly listed elsewhere as Sz 70, which are choral settings).They date from 1907. I have yet to track down sheet music...1. V tej bystrickej bráne (Near the borders of Bistrita); 2. Pohřebni píseň (Dirge/'Death Song'- Down in the valley deep); 3. Priletel ptak (Message); 4. Kruti Tono vretena (Tono Whirls the Spindle) Hope this is helpful :-)
2006 is correct. He also sang Schubert's Die Bürgschaft, Britten's 7 Sonnets of Michelangelo and 13 R, Strauss lieder. It was broadcast on BBC3. I wonder if this was the only time he sang the Bartok? The rest of the program he sang at other times. BTW, he sang Der Meistersinger in concert the next night - debut in role.
Unfortunately it was the only time he sang that Bartok. Perhaps because of the originally Hungarian linguage. As we know he wants to sing only in the linguages he can speak (except thos little jokes at some encores).
I wondered if it was his only Bartok. He is singing it in German, right? The original text was probably Slovak. Wonder if Bartok set the Slovak or a Hungarian version? Bartok's music sounds like it might be difficult to sing. Not much legato and lots of key changes. Kaufmann doesn't seem to be attracted to "modern" music despite having sung it early in his career. I still would like to see an opera (or song cycle) composed just for him. I know Hampson and even some opera houses have commissioned works.

Yes, in October 2018. "Du Bist Die Welt Fur Mich"/"You Are the World to Me" was the program. It exists as a CD. They also performed at Carnegie Hall in Jan. 2018 (Schubert, Die Schoene Muellerin) and in Feb. of 2014. See the Jonas Kaufmann Unofficial Website, under "Biographie."

I was looking for something else but did these guys ever perform at Carnegie Hall? In New York City about two years ago? With violin accompaniment?
