  • Patient testimonial of a life changing transformation after "roto rooter" or TURP (transurethral resection of prostate). This surgery was performed by Dr. John C. Lin of Sunrise Urology in Gilbert, Arizona.
Ben recounts that he no longer has to know where all the bathrooms are located anymore. He suffered urinary difficulties despite tamsulosin but was not very compliant with the medication. His workup included a cystoscopy, which showed a large median lobe obstructing his bladder. He went home the same day after his surgery, and had a catheter for less than 24 hours. There were no worsening sexual side effect he noticed.
He said: "I wish I had done it sooner." "It's back to normal."
Ben gave advice to his co-workers and others about what to do with urinary difficulties.
Dr. Lin shared that the experience of the surgeon matters.
TURP is usually performed as an OUTPATIENT procedure. Dr. Lin uses saline, bipolar, plasma technology, which is much safer than the traditional TURP. This means the patient goes home the same day, without hospitalization. Catheter, if one is used, is usually removed in less than 24 hours.

I had no pain to speak of at all, the catheter is uncomfortable, but that's it. I had it 25 days ago, getting the bleeding to stop is my problem. You have to be careful not to exert yourself, I got it to stop at 3 weeks then moved some firewood around thinking I was good and it started again.

Hi again Doctor Lin! So I'm scheduled for my own TURP in 12 days and it seems most of your patients were having symptoms different than mine. I also have the large blocking median-lobe but my issue is not lack of control, but instead it's urinary retention.
Evidently this was my hidden issue that came to light following a minor unrelated surgery involving brief general anesthesia. Following that I gradually retained 1400 ML and needed "emergency" cath. which I then wore for 4 days. I've now been doing "clean intermittent self-catheterization." So how common is "chronic" urinary retention the main symptom indicating TURP? thanks!

So how long after the surgery did his urine flow improve to the point of emptying his bladder? did he have frequent feelings to go urinate? thx David

I had TURP… very good results ..,. However, I do not like not being able to ejaculate anymore… wish that could be fixed..

Ejaculation-preserving TURP could have been performed when you had the discussion with your surgeon pre-op.

100% retrograde ejaculation.. you didn't mention how long catheter after Turp..
I know a few people with Turp. Plus, read many blogs.. retrograde ejaculation every one.

      @scotniver7180,
You do realize there is a way to perform ejaculation-preserving TURPs, right?
For most men, by the time they need TURP, they couldn't care less about emissions at their age.
There are about 40 MILLION men in the U.S. with BPH annually. Urologists do not need to sell anything, fortunately!

There are many ways to perform TURP. Just need to talk to an informed and skilled urologist about the procedure techniques to reach the results you desire.
I should have gone into used car sales. It would have helped with less social awkwardness. I would also not have to work so hard at public speaking and learn interview skills. - jcl

As usual a very poor interview. Patients want to know the recovery day to day time frames and progress after a TURP. For example how many days of bleeding, urgency, pain in urination, urinary incontinence if any. Dr. Lin is only interested in promoting TURP is an outpatient procedure and only need no to a few hours of urinary catheterization.

Recovery varies by individual. Sometimes a man who has delayed treatment will take longer to improve vs someone who gets treated right away.
There are many videos outlining TURP FAQs. Look up TURP FAQ in RUclips.

Many websites tell potential patients about how many days they have to stay in the hospital and how long they have to wear a catheter. Both potential misinformation. We are simply showing a different perspective by someone experienced in performing TURPs.

Husband just had TURP. Came home after the procedure. The first day he was a little anxious because of the sensation of the catheter; it feels odd because your bladder is constantly draining. He's had zero pain and not taking any pain meds. Now the catheter doesn't bother him and he's feeling fine. Catheter will come out on the 7th day. As far a bleeding, there was a little after the surgery and the first day. Now there is little to none. The bleeding overall is very small; literally a few CCs. He's had some leaking from his penis (which is normal), so puts a panty pad in his underwear. The whole procedure was very straightforward for him and he's looking forward to not having to pee multiple times a day and getting up every couple of hours at night.
